My new iPhone software is "too old" to backup from iTunes

Hi.  I recently purchased an iPhone 5.  I backed up my iPhone 4 on iTunes, then plugged in my iPhone 5 to restore from the backup.  I got an error message saying the software on the iphone is "too old".  It said I have to install the iphone as a new device and install the latest version of the software.  That's fine, but how do I then use the backup from my iPhone 4, because iTunes thinks the iPhone 5 is a new device and automatically backs it up every time I plug it it.  I'm not very tech savvy so I'm hoping there's an easy solution to this problem!
I need help

hey sharis28,
for each iphone or other ios device is a back up created in itunes.
you can connect your iphone 5 to your wi-fi router (settings > wi-fi), than you can update ios software in your settings (settings > general > software update).
or you can restore your device via itunes than is the newest ios software installed.

itunes says that i need itunes 10.5 to get the new iphone software, but i already have 10.5 itunes.  i cant seem to figure out how to get the new iphone software cause it keeps telling me to download updates, and then it does and update search and says im all updated.

I had a similar issue.  I had to uninstall iTunes and then reinstall it.  Assuming PC, you have to go to the control panel and use the uninstall applications tool.  Then install it again.  Worked for me.

  • Can't restore replacement iphone software is too old?

I had an iphone 3gs & it was damaged so I replaced it with a refurbished one I purchased on ebay which is actually a 3g.  When I tried to restore the phone it said the software was too old that I would have to set it up as a new phone first.  I did that & I can't figure out how to restore the phone to my last back up.  When I go to restore the phone it sets it back to factory settings which then of course won't take the back up.  I tried restoring it and set it up as a new phone on a different computer and then plugged it into my laptop where my backup is saved and I can't get it to restore to that back up.  My only option seems to be to restore again to factory settings.  Any idea on how to get my data on to the new phone?  Thanks!

You cannot.  Apple does not allow for restoring a backup from any version to any older version.  There is no logical reason why you would want to do this anyways as it could create unresolvable issues or instability in the device.
Simply set up the new device and sync your content.

  • I just bought a new iphone, how do i get my songs from itunes onto the new phone?

i just bought a new iphone, how do i get my songs fron itunes onto the new phone? when i log into itunes, none of my songs are there...

Are you saying your iTunes doesn not have your songs?  If not, where would they be?  If on an older iphone, then they should have gotten there via itunes and itunes has them.

Use your backup copy of your old computer to put everything on your new computer, then sync the iphone to that comptuer.

  • The back up is on my work computer. Can I set it up as a new iphone and then later upload the info from itunes

    Hi,
My phone got stolen and I just got my replacement iphone 4 today. I don't have the itunes back up on my computer, but I do have it backed up at work. I want to start using th phone- can i set it up as a new phone and then update it in a few days when I get to work.
    Thanks

Yes, but the first time you sync with a new iTunes library it will delete any iTunes media an apps from your phone and replace them with the media in the iTunes library your are syncing with (purchased apps and music can be redownloaded for free: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519).
When you get to work, connect your phone to your computer, then right-click on the name of your phone when it appears in iTunes on the left sidebar and choose Restore From Backup.

  • I just bought a new iPhone 5 and I downloaded my songs from iTunes. now when i go to play them, it says URL not found in server.

    Helppppp!!

You'll have to contact iTunes store support regarding your credit card information problem: http://www.apple.com/emea/support/itunes/contact.html.  I'm not clear on what you're saying about your backup.  Are you saying that when you connect to iTunes it's asking you to restore from backup even though you already have?

  • Cannot Sync to iPhone Cause iPad Software is too Old

Driving me nuts. I want my ipad and iphone to sync and when I try to restore my brand new ipad to my iphone, I keep getting an error that says, "The backphone "iPhone" cannot be restored to this iPad because the software on the iPad is too old."
But it's not. I've done this 5 times now. It is definitely up to date. Even updated the firmware on my iphone. No matter what though I keep getting this error.
Any ideas? Do you guys mirror data on both devices or not? Maybe I don't need to do this in the first place.
Seems like the right thing to do though.
    Thanks for your help.
    Peter

Am currently having the same issue! My iPhone 3GS is running 4.0.2 and the iPad, which I bought tonight, is running 3.2.2, and everytime I try to restore from the iPhone backup I get the same error, ie that the iPad software is too old and that it needs to be prepared as a new iPad first, then updated, then restored from the iPhone backup.
    ....but it doesn't work!!!!

  • HT201269 WHEN i DO THIS IT TELLS ME THAT THE SOFTWARE IS TOO OLD. THAT I MUST START  AS NEW PHONE. SO HOW DO I USE THE BACKUP?

I backed up my iphone 5 in itunes. I am now trying to restore to my new iphone 5S.  It tells me it cannot restore because software is too old.  To start as new iphone.  If I do this how do I restore my information?

Backup from a later IOS version cannot be used to restore on iPhone with a earlier IOS version.
You need to update the iPhone to the latest IOS 7.1 version first before you can restore the backup.

  • Can't move purchased TV shows to iPod- says software is too old

I purchased some TV shows off iTunes yesterday and it won't let me put them onto my iPod, manually or automatically. It tells me that my iPod software is too old and I should click "update" on the summary window. However, that same summary window is telling me that my iPod IS up to date already, and the update button is shaded and won't let me click it. I've looked for support articles, I've reset it, I don't know what else to do.

I had my iTunes set to manually update instead of automatically update. I decided to try changing it to set it to automatically sync. Nothing amazing happened then, but the next time that I plugged my iPod into my computer, it started syncing, then a box came up that said "a new version of iPod software 1.2.2 (or something like that)". I said YES, download and install! And VOILA! It works! Huzzah! Tell all your friends!
The bad thing of course is that by automatically updating, I lost some of my songs from my old hard drive, but it was worth it.
    Good luck.

  • Some items were not copied because software is too old

I've updated to 7.0.2 and finally decided to brave the waters and sync my iPod--I've been too chicken to sync it at all since 7.0 came out and all of the issues began appearing.
Of course, when I plugged in the iPod, it asked if I wanted to update & install or "download only". I chose to download only so that I could install it later (hoping maybe another firmware would come out before I do). My iPod was still able to sync--which I wasn't sure it would. However, after it finished I received the following message:
"Some of the items in the iTunes library were not copied to the iPod "Michelle's iPod" because your iPod software is too old. Go the to the Summary tab in iPod preferences and click Update to get the latest iPod software update."
I checked my item counts between iTunes and the iPod--there were 35 "music" items that didn't sync and 110 podcasts that didn't sync. This is out of the 500 or so items that the progress window said it was trying to sync from the beginning.
It would sort of make sense if it refused to sync ANYTHING that I had added since before 7.0. But why would it sync some, but not others? None of it is "purchased" from the iTunes Store. It's all either imported CD's, downloaded podcasts, or simply "updated" old items (those whose play count or last played date had changed--or possibly new album art).
Any idea how to figure out the logic behind which items it WILL sync with "old" software and which items it will not?
Maybe I'll be forced to try updating to 1.2 after all! I was really hoping to wait since it sounds like many of the current issues are iPod firmware related instead of iTunes related.
    Any ideas?

The error 48 comes up when syncing. I think I have a fair idea now that there is a problem when attempting to sync contacts or anything else. Initially when setting up the iPod from scratch the iTunes capacity window for the iPod shows audio, other and free space. The other I believe is the essential system software plus the calenders, contacts and notes folders. On set up all files transfer. Every single time when I have clicked on the pane to allow contacts syncing problems begin. The other capacity disappears leaving audio and free space. Syncing is attempted by iTunes but it gives up and the error message 48 appears unable to update.
My solution so far is to disable all syncing when setting the iPod up and dragging files over. Not ideal but it seems to work fingers crossed.
