My plan for new FCS install with questions

End-of-fiscal-year budgetary windfall enables a giant leap from a G4 running FCP 4.5 to a spankin' new 8-Core machine for FCS2. (Hello Motion!).
I'd like to identify any "gotchas" in a new FCS install before I jump into it. Your advice and comments from personal experience are appreciated.
Here's my plan, based on what I've read here, and a couple of questions:
1. Update to latest available OS from whatever version is on the machine.
2. Run installer from disks - repair permissions.
3. Update FCS and Quicktime, if any updates are available - repair permissions.
4. Connect to old machine via Firewire target mode - transfer project files, plug ins, and any universal applications that might be useful.
5. Copy media from my old, external scratch drive to the internal eSata drive I plan to use as the new scratch - seems like a good time to repair permissions once more.
6. Launch FCP, set up preferences and drives, open an old project and reconnect media.
I'm starting with existing DV media and timelines, but part of our studio upgrade includes new Sony EX-1 cameras, so we'll soon be working with XDCam files. I haven't decided which quality level yet.
Do the new mixed-format timelines work as advertised? Lots of legacy material to deal with.
Is there any advantage in capturing XDCam and DV footage to separate drives?
I'd like to repurpose my old external drive for automatic back-ups. Is the Time machine working well for everybody?
That's enough to wrap my brain around right now. Thanks in advance from a long-time lurker. Always great discussions here.
Rob A.

Rob,
Congratulations on the new toy! You gotta love those year end surpluses.
FWIW, I think that you are on the right track. I would second the other response that said to only migrate project files. Everything else needs to be installed, especially since you are going from PowerPC to Intel.
internal eSata drive
This just made me laugh, it's kind of like having a "Hot" water heater. Anyway, the "e" in "eSATA" stands for "external" so having an internal external drive would just be strange.
Do the new mixed-format timelines work as advertised?
This is one of the most misunderstood features about FCS2. You have always been able to mix media on a timeline, and then render. The trick was that you had to choose what kind of timeline you were going to mix your media in. You remember on the old version you would open up a new project, bring in your media only to realize that you forgot to change the easy setup to the new media type. So now you have to delete "Sequence 1", change the easy setup, open a new sequence and everything was good. In the new version you open up a project, get your media, drop it on the timeline and FCP says, "hey, that media is different from your sequence settings, would you like me to change them for you?" Then you can go ahead an d mix media, and render.
Moral of this story, choose your sequence settings according to what the majority of your media in the sequence will be because you will have to render anything that doesn't match.
Is there any advantage in capturing XDCam and DV footage to separate drives?
No.
Hope this helps,
K

  • HEY APPLE! What are upgrade policy plans for new systems shipping with 10.4

I just ordered a brand new Xserver, thinking that there would be some policy in place for brand new computers shipping with 10.4, to get the new version of OSX Leopard Server (without having to buy a retail copy) - however to my surprise, there is nothing currently in place.
Will there be an upgrade policy soon for users who have just ordered new computers, currently shipping with 10.4??? Or should we return recently ordered items, and stop ordering new systems until they start shipping with 10.5?

Assumptions such as this one are often a recipe for disappointment and/or for extra expenses; I've certainly learned to be cautious with these.
In this case, there is a policy that has been in place (AFAIK) since the Leopard announcement.
For details on and requirements of the Leopard upgrade policy, do read the [Mac OS X Up To Date|http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate> web site.
Those folks outside the Leopard upgrade window that are upgrading to Leopard (and that don't have a separately-purchased Right-to-Upgrade) will be purchasing and ordering the upgrade. You may end up purchasing an iLife upgrade, too — if you're using it, and not already at the current release — as Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server upgrades apparently do not include an iLife upgrade.

  • How much RAM should I get my new MacBook installed with?

How much RAM should I get my new MacBook installed with? I'm planning on getting a new Macbook sometime this fall. I'll probably be a light user, mostly internet, email, and your occasional Letter/Envelope.
Are their any other options that I'll want to make sure that I get?
Oh, and this will also be my very first Mac.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

In the link Alvin Ray posted it shows the different configurations that can be used in RAM. Officially Apple states that the MacBook supports 2 GB Ram. It can hold 4 GB but only uses 3 GB. The 4 GB would only benefit the matched pair use for optimum graphics. Unless you do a lot of very graphic intensive work 3 GB should be fine.

  • ALV Grid default values for new rows added with Add/Insert buttons

    Hi!
Help, please,  to find a way how to set default values for new rows added with Add/Insert buttons in
    ALV Grid.

    I have found salution:
ALV Grid u2013 Insert row function
Sometimes we need to assign some default values when we create a new row in a grid using standard ALV Append row button. In our scenario we will see how to assign default values to Airline Code (CARRID), Flight Connection Number (CONNID) and Flight date (FLDATE) when a new row is created. To do that we need to handle DATA_CHANGED event in the program like mentioned below.
    Definition of a class:
    Code:
          CLASS lcl_event_receiver DEFINITION
    CLASS LCL_EVENT_RECEIVER DEFINITION.
      PUBLIC SECTION.
    METHODS:
         handle_data_changed
         FOR EVENT data_changed OF cl_gui_alv_grid
         IMPORTING er_data_changed
                           e_ucomm.
    ENDCLASS.                    "lcl_event_receiver DEFINITION
    Implementation of a class:
    Code:
    CLASS LCL_EVENT_RECEIVER IMPLEMENTATION.
      METHOD HANDLE_DATA_CHANGED.
        DATA: dl_ins_row TYPE lvc_s_moce.   " Insert Row
          FIELD-SYMBOLS: <fs> TYPE table.    " Output table
Loop at the inserted rows table and assign default values
        LOOP AT er_data_changed->mt_inserted_rows INTO dl_ins_row.
          ASSIGN er_data_changed->mp_mod_rows->* TO <fs>.
          loop at <fs> into ls_outtab.
            ls_outtab-carrid  = 'LH'.
            ls_outtab-connid  = '400'.
            ls_outtab-fldate  = sy-datum.
            MODIFY <fs> FROM ls_outtab INDEX sy-tabix.
          endloop.
        endloop.
      ENDMETHOD.                    "handle_data_changed
    ENDCLASS.                    "lcl_event_receiver IMPLEMENTATION
Register the events to trigger DATA_CHANGED event when a new row is created.
    Code:
        CALL METHOD OBJ_GRID->REGISTER_EDIT_EVENT
          EXPORTING
            I_EVENT_ID = CL_GUI_ALV_GRID=>MC_EVT_ENTER.
        CALL METHOD OBJ_GRID->REGISTER_EDIT_EVENT
          EXPORTING
            I_EVENT_ID = CL_GUI_ALV_GRID=>MC_EVT_MODIFIED.

  • Pacman.conf NEED tips for totally offline install with DVD repository

OBJECTIVE: after a base install with ARCHBOOT be able to install from DVD repository which contains repo-add database.
My DVD contains the folder from /var/cache/pacman/pkg.
ON the DVD I have the folder 'pkg' at the dvd root level and another folder which has my already built packages fro AUR.
The database called 'custom.db.tar.gz' created with repo-add exists IN the pkg folder on the DVD.
The built AUR packages are in a seperate folder called '_built' at the dvd's root level as well and they are not included in the repo-add database.
I am able to mount the dvd, cd to the pkg folder and use  pacman -Ud to install them though this requires that I type in the full name of the package and I get dependence issues and '*.so' type files not found.
IF I copy all the files from the DVD to the var/cache/pacman/pkg folder I am able to add my local repository to pacman.conf and MUCH more efficient install. I can use pacman -S xorg for example, and I think it finds dependencies even. Can't recall exactly at the moment.
SO: do I need to alter pacman.conf  cache location line and the other lines?
Would I change the 2nd and 3rd lines to get max pacman ability when using DVD repository???
Pointing them to my DVD folder after mounting the dvd
    #RootDir     = /
    #DBPath      = /var/lib/pacman/
    #CacheDir    = /var/cache/pacman/pkg/
    #LogFile     = /var/log/pacman.log
I really would like to have as much power and flexibility when using the DVD as the repo.
Can anyone tell me what I should alter in pacman.conf for this.
I am fine if I have to alter the cache location line temporarily if it will give me additional pacman ability.
I have read all the wiki stuff for sure though I'm still a bit in the dark and wanted to ask without typing the many many options.
One big one for me is I don't yet know how to set the SERVER = in pacman.com to look at the mounted DVD and the pkg folder specifically.
    I do mount /dev/sr0  /mnt/cdrom
So what would I put as the SERVER for this in pacman.conf
    SERVER = /dev/sr0   ?????   or   /dev/cdrom  ????    or /mnt/cdrom I think ????
    dunno!
AND I really probably DO have to temporarily alter the pacman.conf  cache location line to get pacman to do dependency installs and let me type short lines instead of the full package name.
THANKS! this one is BIG for me!!!!! :---)

COMMENT WRITTEN LAST: I was about to delete a lot of stuff here though thought to just say sorry for not taking the brain-time to slim it. The bold and white boxed part is the main related quest-ion.
you might find a few useful tools on my site (in my sig), e.g. pkgd if you want to save bandwidth on a LAN --- pbget if you want to easily get PKGBUILDs etc from the AUR and official repos, etc.
WOW Xyne !!!! thanks.  pbget etc. sound very cool.
I used yaourt until very recently. Then went ....hmmmm... should learn about manual building and local repo. Where I'm at now is trying to do as much manually as possible. I think I kinda know what packages I want and there will only be some changes from that in the future. There's maybe 20 packages from AUR for me. [PLUS their dependencies]
Of course: I am doing the repo-add local repositories thing for speed, learning, and as part of my whole 'best practices' growth. Plus it will come in very handy when helping other decide quickly if a barbones mainly wm/ncurses lightweight system is for them.
You certainly spark a question or two!
[AUR and dependencies via yaourt affecting my plans to now go manually]
As these have all ALREADY been installed via yaourt my BIG concern is that I've never found much of a yaourt/cache folder. You see, as you'd know many many times upon installing vai yaourt there's some dependency that may, or I guess, may not be in the standard repos.
After installing these packages via yaourt do the dependencies go into /var/cache/pacman.pkg and is pacman aware of it when I do a repo-add for thecustom database. If so, then all if fairly cool for my plans. I bet there's a few idiosyncrasies about AUR and dependencies maybe.
    -AUR dependency resolution-
Using a custom repo will not really work for general use because you would need to manually populate the database with the dependencies anyway.
I'm fine with manually doing dependencies - though need to know if my yaourt usage ALREADY put the latest dependencies in the pacman cache for AUR unsupported packages AND is there a way with the whole repo-add, local repositry, pacman and aur concpt I'm planning to fine tune to have the dependencies update when I go back to the online repositries? I don't think so based on my usage with yaourt, though can't quite recall.
As I will be enjoying makepkg building the group of packages I nee to get from AUR for the forseeable future (that are not in the main 3 repos of course)
I'm still wondering about the inter-relationships. So: I already have installed and/or built the packages for everything I expect to need mostly.   I never became beyone mediocre with yaourt.  and that fine, though I now have to consider that in a new install I DO have the latest AUR built packages, though will there be the right dependencies ALREADY in my /var/cache/pacman/pkg ?
There's a few things that I'd love to really understand about this. Even if it ends up that dependencies for the AUR packages is always a bit trickier.
QUESTION: right now I am uable to try custom repo from flash stick as it's read only. I'll be googling this one out and am really looking forward to having a flash stick with ARCHBOOT and I gues ONE repo pkg folder and database on it.
NOTE: I will put the custom repo above the stock ones in pacman.conf. I just commented out the others as I was doing all this offline.
I've dumped the dvd as a repo and have switched to a flash stick.  I've extracted the archboot out to a 4 gig flash stick.
dd if=/root/Desktop/archlinux-2009.05-2-archboot.iso of=/dev/sdb  Its read-only at the moment and no matter what I've tried it stays that way. Maybe I need to use the HPutil on it. It definitely isn't writeable so I won't ponder or note observations here save to say that 'm stumped as to how to get files copied to it.
And now what may be the way I'd like to work:    Keep my folder for building packages from aur which is /root/aur. Then after doing the fun makepkg --asroot   or even makepg -i as root to install. Though I'll probably after the build THEN just copy the built packages from my /root/aur to /var/cache/pacman/pkg   and install from there as I DO plan to use the online repos.
I will ALSO copy the file to my USB stick or maybe just sync to it and do a the repo-add thing in   /var/cache/pacman/pkg   and keep the stick as both backup and 'in the ready' reinstaller.
Um, now  could spend an hour editing down the above!!!
    wondrous thanks!

  • Changed MIC in quality plan for new lot.....

    Hi All,
I created quality plan for one material and did result recording.
Now again new lot is created for same material but this time I donu2019t want to check same MIC what I did last time.
I deleted the pervious MIC and added new MIC what I want to check. After doing that again I went to QA32 to do RR for new MIC but its showing pervious one.
So what I have to do.
    Please suggest me.
    Regards,
    Siddharth shanker

    Dear Siddharth,
I created quality plan for one material and did result recording.
    No issue this  is fine.
Now again new lot is created for same material but this time I donu2019t want to check same MIC what I did last time.
If you don't want to check same MIC's there are two options :
    a) Go to insp plan delete / overwrite the MIC and save,  please ensure that  your lot is generated after this change is made. new plan will be applied.
    b) Make a separate  task list  with  other set of MIC's  and while assigning the task list  to inspection lot you can select the desired one.
I deleted the pervious MIC and added new MIC what I want to check. After doing that again I went to QA32 to do RR for new MIC but its showing pervious one.
Pl check when  the lot has been generated, if it is generated  before you have done the changes  then  lot will not show new MIC's. for that you have to go to QAC3 to reset the insp lot.
    Best Regards,

  • Optimal Setup for New Time Capsule with Wireless AC

I'm curious to see what the hypotehtical optimal setup for my Time Capsule.  I understand that wireless speeds depend on a ton of factors and that part of getting the best connection is just trying different options.  I have a new Time Capsule that's connected to the following devices: iPhone 5S; new MacBook Air with wireless AC; old iMac from 2007; old AirPort Express that only supports b/g and a newish Apple TV that supports wireless N, I believe.  I was connecting to the network (which was not designated with the 5ghz) and I recently chose the option to label the 5ghz.  I'm using that now to stream music with the new iPhone and the Apple TV with no problems, but I have no longer have the option of using the old Airport express because it's an old one.  I'm thinking of just getting a new Airport Express and leaving it at that, but wanted to know if anyone has some thoughts on this.  I'm sure there's a more concise and direct way to ask this question, but my knowledge is pretty limited here.  Thanks in advance.

The Time Capsule is already set up for optimal performance when you open up the box.
You can assign a separate name to the 5 GHz network and point devices that are capable to that network. This works well if the device is located close to the Time Capsule.
But, 5 GHz signals are much weaker than 2.4 GHz signals, so once you move a room or two away, or the signal has to pass through several walls, the 2.4 GHz will be stronger.....and probably faster as well.
But...your device will try to stay locked on the 5 GHz network since you set it up that way.
This type of setup may or may not work best for you.  For most users, it is simpler and more effective to use the default settings on the Time Capsule to have both bands use the same network name.
Then, your wireless devices will automatically connect to the signal with the best quality. Best quality may not be the fastest signal since there are lot of factors involved with signal quality. But, if you think about it a bit more, don't you want to have your wireless device connect to the signal with the best quality?
Some users swear by assigning a separate name to the 5 GHz band. I'm not one of them, but If it works well for them and they are happy, then there is no reason to change.
An older AirPort on your network is going to drag down the speeds. You need the new AirPort Express, or better yet an AirPort Extreme if you want to be able to extend the new 802.11ac signal.

  • Multiple Failures for new trusted certs with ORA-28857

We are seeing problems with working APIs that use UTL_HTTP over SSL starting to fail with newer trusted certs. Importing these certificates into the wallet just leads to a ORA-28857 and a corrupted wallet. We are using 11.2.0.1.  3 trusted chains have now failed. Examples include the cert chains (hydrant and godaddy certs) from
    https://api.betfair.com
    https://www.flipkey.com/
I've had a support call open for the last month with no resolution.
If anyone has any potential avenues of workarounds  / solutions might just save me some sleepless nights. Our products functionality is dying because of this problem!

If the certificates are SHA2, they won't work in 11201.. they are fully supported from 11203 up.

  • Using current dimmensions for new business areas with coarser granularity

    Hi,
I have a time dimension which has month, quarter, semester and year attributes.
I am creating a new business area in which each fact refers to a quarter (we have no monthly data). In this case I am considering two options:
    1) Using an attribute in the fact table that points to the quarter field in the dimension table (or creating a quarter code in the dimension table, and pointing to that code -there is already month-year code as primary key-).
    2) Creating a new dimension table with just quarter, semester and year.
What should be best? Is there another option?
    Thanks for yout help.
    Fernando.

    Hi Sam,
I am not sure wheher memory is really a serious constraint anymore. Consider this:
    a) the price of memory today is pretty much at the price point of hard disks in the year 2000 (at least according to a study I saw). In 2000 we happily ran business systems without being worried about the cost of hard disks ... and that is where we are today with RAM. Sure, disks also became much cheaper, as did flash memory, but the speed benefits of RAM are so superior that it is worth investing in it.
    b) there are already 1 TB RAM blades available, and I think there is now a 2 TB RAM blade on the market (I heard about Samsung having one, and others may have one too)
    c) we indeed routinely achieve compression factors of 10-20 x. It all depends much on how full the table field is, and how homogeneous the content. A field "Currency" compresses great, a field with a "UUID (Universally Unique Identifier)" does not.
    d) customers typically only want to access this and last year's business data (and keep the rest just for reference)
So I think that it is quite possible to have the active business data even of the largest SAP customers completely in memory, at a reasonable price point. Sure, more expensive than disk ... but who cares about disk anymore (apart for backup)?
    Kind regards, Oliver

  • EREC: Activities are already marked as planned for new candidates

    Hello All,
when I log on as recruiter and open assignments to a requisition, select a new candidate (that is totally new in the system) and go to "Activities" two activities are already two activities marked as planned for this candidate.
The activities are "Check Suitability" and "Check Documents for Completeness" only in process step "Inbox".
Process step "Pre-selection" also contains one of these activities, but here it's not marked.
Any idea what could be the reason for this and how I can change these settings?
E-Rec is on EhP5 and NWBC HTML is used as frontend.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hello Carla,
These activities are created automatically once a candidate applies. This is done by the workflow WS51900010. So if you don't want them to be created you can copy the workflow to a custom one and delete these steps.

  • Is it safe to update iPhoto 8.1.2 to 9.5.1 or should I just wait for new Photos app with OS X Yosemite ?

iPhoto has always been slow and less than reliable to use. Have never updated it because of concerns with updates. Will current pics in iPhoto get transferred to new Photos app with OS X Yosemite somehow or will I be stuck using both apps?

I do experience slowness/unresponsiveness and freezing in iPhoto,
    Two points:
    1. These sound like a damaged Library file and you might try repairing it.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
and from reading numerous posts, I am quite certain that many users have had similar experiences.
The problem with this is that the folks who don't have any problems never post, so you're working from a skewed sample.
    Regards

  • Help with plan for new system

I was hoping to get a little expert advice on the system that I am planning on building. I was looking at picking up the "MSI Z68A-GD80 (B3)" motherboard, along with an Intel 510 SSD 120 gb drive. I am planning on partitioning the SSD into two drives, one for the max 64 gb ISRT cache, and the other with the rest of the space for the win7 prof 64 bit OS drive.
So my question is if the splitting of the SSD is possible like I mentioned?
and next, what should I pick for a data/app drive? I am not sure whether to go with my usual 2 drive raid-0 setup, or simply get one drive since I will be using ISRT. Any suggestions?
Another note, after I read about booting from USB devices, I plan on skipping the floppy drive
    Thank you for any input.

Booting of USB device can be set as a priority in BIOS.
SSD is like any HDD, just do the partitioning during setup.
RAID wise, it is up to your preference. Speed or Mirroring or Balance?

  • New infinity install with a master socket move - w...

As I understand it, Infinity requires a modem plugged in directly to the master socket & a power point adjacent also. This is of no use to me at all & I would like the master socket moved. Now, from what I read here, BT will do this "officially" for £130, or on an infinity install, the openreach engineer *might/should* do it if it is straightforward.
I plan to run cat 5e cable from the master socket location, up a cable run we have in the property to the new location where I want the master socket to be located, leaving both ends unconnected. Then it should be simple enough for the engineer to connect at each end and then carry on working from the new master socket location. Maybe they could even use the second pair in the cat 5e to reconnect the original set of phone sockets we have around the house that are currently connected from the existing master socket.
    Could someone advise please...
    1. Is cat 5e cable the correct cable to use?
    2. Does my plan sound viable? Is it technically correct?
    3. Could the second pair in the cat 5e be used in the way I have described? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply & welcome Michael.
    Some subsidiary questions then please.
    1. Should I run a different sort of cable other than 5e? If so, what would be the correct type?
    2. Your very helpful diagram suggests that BT would surface run up to 30m from the Master Socket to the modem. My cable run would be much less than this. Would I be better to run cable myself (in my cable run) to be used as the connection from the master socket to the modem? If so, what sort of cable should it be please & does it need to have a connecting plug on the end of it (where it plugs into the master socket) or will the OpenReach engineer fit this him/herself. I guess if they surface run cable they will be able to attach the plugs on the end of the cable. What sort of connection is it?
Thanks for you time - and for anyone else's who replies.
I should also say I am not bothered if the Master Socket is moved, AS LONG as the modem & router (home hub) are NOT located adjacent to the current position of the Master Socket. I estimate the direct cable run required if I run the cable will be no,more than 15 metres.
