My Poor iMac... Always Freezing now...

It's sure funny how my Apple IIc still works and my PowerMac G5 (non-intel) still works well but yet all my Intel Based systems seam to crash then die.
I'm really getting tired replacing them if ya know what I mean. And it usually happens AFTER the warranty runs up. I mean REALLY!??!
Anyway, I have 20" Aluminum iMac 1.3
iMac7,1
SMC Version -1.20f4
2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256MB
And after upgrading to OSX 10.7.3 things were going along just great. I even started using XCode 4.3.2 and desiging some apps and right in the middle of a project all of a sudden a hang.
Symptoms:
See Desktop and items I'm running,
Mouse moves
Everything else frozen in time...
After a force reboot I cleared the PRAM just cause.
Then it Hang on entering password to enter.
Then after another forceboot, I was able to get in, but now it hangs.. sometimes it takes a min sometimes a few seconds, sometimes it doesn't even enter the system after logging in... sometimes it works fine for an hour then hangs.
I tried a fresh install of both 10.6.x and 10.7 and it hung during the process..
grrrr!
I'm back to 10.7 (point nothing) and it seams to be hanging on.. .however it did have a graphics glitch during login.
I hate throwing money away.
Any help without taking it to the Apple Store?
I really don't have any Help $$ I can spend at this time.. or tomorrow for that matter...
Please help!!!

When you say run Apple Hardware Test, where exactly am I running that from? Since I have 10.7 on there now, it's on the USB Key that the OS is on (no longer cd) I run the only thing that I see which is the Disk Utility and what I see is that when "Verfy Disk" is ran it sees no problems, but when I run "Verify Disk Permissions" it sees lots of problems (this is directly after a fresh clean install).
All the Permissions differ in the following areas no matter how many times I do a "Repair Disk Permissions"
"usr/share/devicemgr/frontend/admin/....fr.lproj.../app/javascript.js"
All items between the ... ... are related to other language files.
Then the last line says:
Group differs on "library/Preferences/com.apple.alf.plist"; should be 80; group is 0
I will look into what you mean with running Console in a moment.
One thing to note, the system doesn't freeze when booted to the USB OS X installer.

If you have the problem after restoring the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod then you likely have a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • IMac keeps freezing, now missing icons.

For the past week now I keep getting an issue with my mac freezing. Often it's after I've walked away for a bit and it's gone to screen saver. I come back, I'm usually able to do one thing and then nothing will respond except unlike a complete freeze, I can still move my mouse. However my clock freezes at the moment it obviously stopped working and things like downloads are frozen (still showing how many kb/s but not moving if you know what I mean). If I click on my mailbox (which is always open) I can look at one email before beach ball of death. Then nothing on the screen responds. The only way I can get out of it is to shut down using the power button. Now after a week (or two) of this happening I go into my Documents folder and I have icons missing... the name is there, just no image.
I'm running OsX 10.6.8, my internet through FF and I do also run Mackeeper once a week to clean up. I have approx 150GB free space on my HD so I don't think memory is an issue. Can anyone give me insight into what's going on? I don't go to dodgy sites.... just things like ebay, gmail, weather forecast and blogspot etc etc. All my scans show computer is fine although it obviously isn't.
Any help would be much appreciated!

ahhhh crap! I knew it was too good to be true! You are right, I was so desperate to remove some other nasty little program that I didn't look into where the reviews of Mackeeper came from (and it never did what I wanted it to do and didn't prevent things like Growl being installed!). I had no idea it was causing the issues as I installed it last year and only recently have been having problems. It's removed now though and all my icons have returned. I guess I'll have to wait and see if my machine speeds up but given that others were experiencing the same issues as I was, I am pretty confident that it will be sorted. Oh by the way, the 2nd link in your article no longer works.
Thank you very much, most appreciated! I never expected to get help from someone from 'home'! (I was born in Yeovil!).

  • IMac always freezing

I have an iMac which I got about 1.5 years ago. It has run really well until a few months ago when I noticed that it was slowing down a bit. Now it is freezing every 20 minutes or so, making it virtually unusable for any length of time.
When the system freezes, it just shows the spinning ball icon. The mouse moves but you can't actually do anything. It will sit like this for half an hour or until you turn it off manually. I've noticed that my RAM is quite often in high usage - never less than 6GB and often up to 11GB out of 12GB.
    Any suggestions??
    Thanks!

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post any other kind of report — it will be very long and not helpful.

  • IMac always freezing, coloured wheel etc

    Hello
I have noticed, for some time that if I have more than one window open in Safari, the iMac tends to start freezing, ie instead of the arrow you get the coloured wheel and cannot continue until it unfreezes.
Now, I am noticing that, even if only one window is open, the same thing is happening, eg in myspace I cannot even scroll down the page without it stopping and starting.
I don't know what is required in terms of routine maintenance to keep the system running properly.
In addition, today, I had a pop-up which said the system is affected by viruses. Obviously, I don't know if this was something genuine or malicious. I agreed for it to scan, and it said 527 threats found.
It then asked me to download Antivirus 360, which I did not agree to.
Because this freezing happens typically when more than one window is open, I assumed it was a limitation in the iMac rather than broadband-related (I have basic Talk Talk broadband). I now have to consider whether it is virus-related.
I have never installed anti-virus software, other than what is in the Apple software updates.
Can anyone suggest what I should do to get the iMac running more efficiently, and if virus infection may be the cause, what is the best remedy?
    I would appreciate any advice
    Thank you

    Thanks very much
I restarted from the install disc (hold down letter c), and clicked repair for the Mac HD.
At the end, it said - No repairs were necessary.
I then restarted from the internal drive and followed the procedure to repair permissions.
Below, I have pasted the result.
I don't know yet if it has been advantageous, but anything very good or very bad, I will post again
    Thanks very much

How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Yosemite has ruined performance of my 3-year-old iMac with freezes, application shutdowns and more. What can I do?

Since installing Yosemite my iMac frequently freezes, particularly when I have multiple windows open/apps running. I've never had this problem before. All my apps are installed on a solid-state drive and all documents, etc. on a separate drive, so I'm accustomed to fast performance. Most problems seem to occur with Microsoft Office (Word and Entourage) and Safari, but that's what I use most heavily, so no surprise. I have always been able to keep a lot of apps/windows open on desktop without performance problems, until now. Yosemite is leaving me stranded. (I upgraded to Yosemite because a couple of the newest apps I use on my two Macs and iPhone require Yosemite.) Any advice?

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • How can you tell if a computer problem is a hardware or software problem? My Macbook pro is always freezing!!

I've been using my Macbook Pro for about 5 months. The first 3 months were great. But now it makes my life harder!!!
    It's always freezing.
    Any suggetions.

Something doesn't sound right here. You say you have been using the MBP for 5 months and your profile say you are running 10.4.10. A MBP bought five months ago should have Snow Leopard 10.6. Of did you get this MBP used five months ago? Before we can help you must tell the straight story.

  • IMac 2011 freezes regularly but no solution?

    Hi,
My friend has a 2011 iMac, running Snow Leopard (latest version). Recently, he told me that his iMac would freeze, either while surfing the net, downloading, Facebook, or just using applications. This freezing would force him to shut down and restart, where it sometimes freezes again about an hour later. During these freezes, the mouse becomes inactive. Sometimes when it falls asleep, it also freezes on wake, so he has to shut it down and restart.
I suggest he take it in to the Apple Store for a Genius appointment. The Genius conducted what sounds like an extreme stress test and couldn't recreate the error. Running multiple Youtube videos, and apparently UNIX script in the background that sounds like it was testing the CPU. Despite all this stress testing and the Genius' Apple Hardware Test, everything seemed OK. His only suggestion was to "turn it off" more frequently. The only other suggestion was a clean install of Snow Leopard (or other).
Since then, the freezing continues. My friend has even run maintenace programs like Cocktail, etc, and run several SMART diagnostics to ensure the hard drive is OK. Still, I guess it could be the hard drive.
    Any advice? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your help, baltwo. I've asked my friends to keep the logs. Here are two that he gave me.

  • Why does my iMac keep freezing?

    Problem description:
21.5 inch Mid 2010 iMac constantly freezes. Problem 1st reported to Apple a couple years ago when computer would freeze, only mouse/pointer would remain active, though clicking did nothing. Now computer works for as little as ½ hour before freezing completely - mouse/keyboard don’t respond, only way out is to hold power button and restart.
Uninstalled Sophos after reading other posts, still freezes.

  • IMac (still) freezes - console: What is "unknown SIGSEGV code 0" ?

Some weeks ago I was writing that my iMac started freezing at irregular intervals. At some point I thought that had found the error - unfortunately it still occurs, though.
Most of the time what happens is this:
    * I draw with my Wacom Intuso 2 in Photoshop CS4. Suddenly nothing works anymore. The mouse Cursor can still be moved (sometimes not even that any more), and iTunes or webradio like Jango still plays what's stored in memory.
Neither Finder nor the dock, expose or spaces work any more.
    * I can't put the computer in sleep mode. All I can do is force-power-off by holding power for 2 seconds
    * I restart the computer and it works like nothing has happened. Sometimes it stays like that for 15 minutes sometimes I can work several hours or a full day without anything weird happening.
    * there are no graphic glitches so I don't suspect the graphics chip (any more)
Just to get this out of the way:
I have an itel Based iMac 24", 3.06GHz DualCore, 2GB RAM.
It's a work machine: Adobe software, Cinema4D and ZBrush.
Worked absolutely flawless before. Works stable most of the time on Windows. Crashes are different from those on OSX if they occur though.
It all started shortly after my mac choked on a security update during install (which had me force-reset the computer the hard way). I installed the Update manually but the freezes still occur.
I have fixed access-rights (several times).
I have performed an intensive system check from the OS disc - nothing found.
I keep the system updated as soon as there are new updates available.
When monitoring the temperatures the only two values above what I think reasonable at times are Graphics (up to 72°C) and power supply (up to 75°C).
All other values are well within normal limits. The Mac stands freely and not to close to any wall. No heat source close to it, no window with too much sunlight either ....
I've already reset the PRAM. No effect.
Now I'm not too familiar with the console but checking the 'system.log' shows something like this very often:
    * Feb 8 15:59:09 noname kernel[0]: unknown SIGSEGV code 0
    * Feb 8 15:59:39: --- last message repeated 3 times ---
Is this something that could be crashing my mac?
Or does this mean nothing, really and the fault still lies somewhere else?
I'm really helpless, any more. My only hope is that it's no hardware malfunction and that my Mac won't die on me over the next few months.
Thanks for any help or advice.

Some discussion and suggestions re. that error can be found in this thread on Adobe's forums:

Whether or not that will help with your freezing issues I can't say. If not, I've seen anecdotal information that suggests issues with Wacom tablets, but again I can't say with certainty that it involved in your problem, but you might try working for a bit, if you can, with the tablet disconnected and see if that has any effect on the frequency of the freezes.
    Hope this helps.

  • Imac Intermittent Freezing

    Hi
I hope someone can help as I'm having real problems.
My Imac keeps freezing, Sometimes after an hour, sometimes a day, sometimes a minute.
So far to try and rectify it I have:
    Upgraded to 1GB RAM
    Reinstalled Tiger
    Partitioned the drive
    Done Disk Permissions
    Verify Disk
    Disk Repair
    Tech Tool
    Disk Warrior
    Preferential Treatment
But it still keeps doing it sporadically. When it does freeze it makes a dull clicking, almost spring like sound, from the top right of the dome, quite near the ventilation holes. Its almost the same as the sound made when the machine is switched on. So I'm fearing it may be a hardware problem.
I can't think of anything else to do as I don't want to take it apart myself. The only thing I might try is looking at these Kernel Panics? and resetting the PRAM? but I don't know much about them. Short of that I may have to take it to a repairer but I want to try and avoid that if I can.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!!
    Many Thanks!!

Rumour has it that Mr Totes can now perform this operation inside 30 minutes - But that's another story! :-)))
I deny the allegation Your Honour. although....
I concur with you Ian in taking as much time as you need. There are too many fiddly cables in there to rush. Printed instructions are a must.

  • My iMac keeps freezing on me. I don't know what's wrong. I restart comp and within 5min it would freeze. How do I fix this problem?

While my iMac keeps freezing on me, is there a way I can try backing up my comp as well?

If you want to preserve the data on the boot drive, and it's not already backed up, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is not fully functional. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot from the Recovery partition or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

  • Ask for refund for upgrading to lion, since lion always freezes at start up.

I want to know if I can get a refund for upgrading to lion. I have been really frustrated with this upgrade. Ever since the upgrade, I have not been able to start up normally. It always freezes at start up. I don't want to waste my time on fixing this issue any more.

No refunds that I know of.
    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.
After seeing what you have to do to return to Snow Leopard you might rethink your position of not wanting to fix the problem you have with Lion which probably arose from existing problems with your Snow Leopard system. The fix is pretty easy. Back up your data, erase the drive, reinstall Lion, restore your files.
Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
