My Powerbook is bleeding electricity

Dear Apple & Apple Support,
I have discovered that my powerbook bleeds electricity across its casing/chassis when plugged into USB devices that have their own power source. This discovery came after a few instances, including getting shocked while trying to unplug a USB device, consistent "alive" sensations when touching the notebook and the ability to feel the "charged" state of the notebook through other people when they are touching it.
I am however in a difficult situation of trying to resolve this issue. I am currently living in Russia (Major Problem #1). My notebook is the only way I can make money... and even at that I don't always make enough to feed myself and family.
I have dealt with the Apple IMC office in Saint Petersburg. While the staff is friendly enough, the process of getting problems addressed is not. My iPod that has been broken for the last 12 months of the 14 months that I have owned it is still dead and was even further damaged by Apple IMC who failed to process the iPod even-though they had it for two months.
Apple Cupertino has been unresponsive to my requests. I am unable to call into the office... e-mails and newsgroup posts go unanswered.
So while I continue to use my Powerbook... getting electrified and mildly electrocuted in the process, i am at a loss as to what to do. If this was a normal problem with the Powerbook and/or its components that i can understand various options. However, this is actually a rather serious problem that holds extreme liability on everyone's part.
Two solutions that I find to be very acceptable and appropriate in this situation are as follows:
Solution #1: The notebook can be given to Apple IMC with clear instruction from Apple as how to process the repair/exchange. In the meantime, a replacement powerbook (iMac or Powermac) will be made available until my Powerbook is repaired/replaced.
Solution #2: Apple will send a replacement Powerbook to Apple IMC. I will then directly exchange the Powerbooks with Apple IMC.
But the crux of the problem is that Apple is not responsive and Apple IMC only cares about the inflow of cash.
While I know that the forums are not a solid environment to post such matters, I have so few options that I sit here on a prayer hoping that i will get some sort of official response.

I used to live in indonesia and i found the exact same problem. but i knew for a fact that the electricity there is not grounded in most homes. i used my computer there for 3 years without any problems while plugged into a special grounded regulating powerbar at my office, and at home i would watch dvd (not touch the machine often) while it was charging and then do my work off battery. I know it is a pain, but when i got back to canada it worked fine without the zaaaaap! i know this isn't helping much but just so you know, i don't think Apple will do anything to help you. (They won't even replace my new machine that has been malfunctioning regularily for 6months and has been in the repair shop ten times, although they will reimburse you for a rental when you have hardware issues) But if you run your finger accross the machine and it feels like you are massaging a power line, it is definately because you are in a place with dodgy electricity. In my experience, i just took it as another interesting aspect of life in a different country, the way it is. But if you are there for good then some electrical work will definately help. It is not your machine.

    I always get electric shock while I touched my powerbook.

    I go crazy about that.
    My parents touch me while I am using it,
    they can feel that there is current flow into my body.

    I've found this is most common a problem if you don't use the grounding outlet that came with your power cord. That means you need to use a three prong connector to the wall, instead of a two.
    The next most common issue is if you walk across a carpet or wet floor, you will pick up static electricity. It is a good idea to discharge your static electricity before touching the computer by touching a desk or other object connected to the floor.
    One time I walked across a wet carpet because of a flood, touched a computer keyboard, and fried the computer with my static electricity.

  • Click track bleed through on electric guitar parts

    Hello, I have been getting bleed from the click track onto my live guitar tracks. Probably something simple that I need to adjust.

    Plug your electric guitar into an amp. Turn it up. Sing directly at the guitar top (where a pickup is).

    If the click track is playing loud enough to hear over the music, then a guitar pickup will pick it up. Especially a hollow body electric.

    leaning over my powerbook (right arm touching casing) to select track on my mini which is in bose sounddock - WHOA! electric trickle through my arm! i must've completed the circuit! certainly woke me up this morning. who needs coffee?

  • Help creating a boot disk for ailing powerbook (and journalist!)

    Hello, I'm a journalist with a desperate need to recover my Mac.
    My Powerbook G4 (operating 10.4.8 I believe) was working fine until I did the latest suggested Mac software upgrade of Safari. Immediately Safari stopped responding hanging up or quitting. So I tried the next recommended update, thinking perhaps the two went together: Security 2008-009 I believe. It required a restart, which I did. (Note: I didn't do the recommended Java or Quicktime update at the same time because I'm currently working in Sierra Leone with terribly slow internet and figured I'd get to it later).
    Now, however, the computer won't boot up. I hear the tone, I get the gray screen with the apple, I get the blue screen, I get the opening OS X screen and the blue progress bar, which then quits early on. Then I get a blue screen of alternating hues, which continues infinitely.
    I tried all the Apple and web-suggested fixes. I cannot enter safe mode and can only perform functions with the single user mode. I've tried fsck and it said my HD is fine. The problem, I suspect, would be easy enough to fix if I could just reinstall OS X with my CD. However I am currently 7000 miles from home and CD, and in desperate need of my laptop in order to continue my volunteer work.
    I do have access to a friend's MacBook Pro 10.4.9 and the internet. I have downloaded Carbon Copy Cloner... however I don't know which files I need to copy in order to create a boot disk. Nor do I know how to create a boot disk to actually put into my computer. I have also been scared by the CCC literature that says I need to erase the target volume... which in this case is my external hard drive containing all of our video footage from the last 8 months!
    I use my computer every day, however I am a newbie at using things like Terminal and higher order functions that these occasions seem to require. CCC's Help manual, for me, might as well have been written in hieroglyphs (which, come to think of it, would have been easier as I seem to understand pictures well enough).
    I would be eternally grateful for any simple or step-by-step advice which might help me get back to work. I'm training African journalists, and without my computer to edit, we cannot do a thing!

    Here's some trouble shooting methods that I've copied from Apple KB articles:
    Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
    Shut down the computer.
    Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously.
    Turn on the computer.
    Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time. Release the keys.
    If zapping the PRAM doesn't work, try resetting the PMU.
    Warning: Resetting the power manager also resets date and time settings. Performing a PMU reset returns the iBook and PowerBook hardware, including NVRAM, to default settings and forces the computer to shut down.
    PowerBook G4 (DVI) and PowerBook G4 (1 GHz/867 MHz)
    If the computer is on, turn it off.
    Disengage the two keyboard latches located between the Esc and F1 keys, and the F11 and
    F12 keys. (You may also need to disengage the keyboard locking screw located between the
    F5 and F6 keys.)
    Lift the keyboard. To ensure no harmful static electricity is transferred to the computer,
    properly ground yourself before performing this procedure.
    Press and release the reset button located on the upper right side of the logic board near the power button, shown here. Wait 5 seconds.
    Press the power button to restart the computer.
    PowerBook G4 and PowerBook G4 (Gigabit Ethernet)
    If the computer is on, turn it off.
    Press and release the reset button located on the rear panel of the computer between the
    external video and modem ports. Wait 5 seconds.
    Press the Power button to restart the computer.

  • Opened Powerbook - Now Keyboard No Longer Works :(

    Hi all,
    my brother asked me to upgrade the HD in his PowerBook G4 1.25Ghz. I followed instructions on iFixit and it all went well, apart from reattaching the keyboard ribbon cable. The logic board has now become damaged because one of the two clasps on either side of the plastic bracket securing the ribbon cable from the keyboard has snapped off. The ribbon cable doesn't seem to hold securely anymore and the keyboard cannot be used. The take-apart guide was a bit unclear about this; what I have is a ribbon cable with a completely stripped and exposed end which slips into a plastic bracket on the logic board and is then wedged in by a separate plastic cross-bar which clips in to the bracket using the 2 clasps at either end. Despite the fact that one of these clasps has now snapped off the ribbon cable looks like it’s pretty firmly wedged in (although it seems an uncharacteristically poor design on Apple’s part) and I’ve made double sure with a little strip of tape. I can’t see how it could be held any other way, however clearly it’s not working as the Powerbook keyboard no longer works and I have to use a USB keyboard.
    I can’t figure this connection out as it looks so makeshift compared to other cables and sockets I’ve seen on Apple logic boards. Anyone have a solution to fixing this ribbon cable in so that it’s making full electrical contact as intended?

    OK, thanks. A new logic board seems such an extreme solution, but it may be the only thing left to try
    The thing is I can't really see what it is that isn't making contact with the ribbon cable. I know the clasp on one side is gone, but despite this the cable is just as firmly wedged in and tape applied over the top to ensure it doesn't ever work loose. I've re-done the connection 4 times now in the hope of making the keyboard work... but nothing. it's a real head-scratcher! You would think that simply inserting the ribbon cable into the slot would be sufficient to make electrical contact, at least for a while; and that the clasps are there just to make sure it doesn't become detached over time.... but it doesn't work no matter how hard it's pushed in!
    I don't suppose anyone has a close-up picture of the connection? I want to see if I'm putting it in right. thanks!

  • Using a North American PowerBook in Europe (Istanbul, Turkey)?

    Hello,
    My wife is traveling to Istanbul (Turkey) with work and she'll be bringing my PowerBook 12" with her. It looks like Istanbul uses the same electricity type as France (220V at 50 Hz with a double-pinned round plug) so I don't imagine there should be any problem plugging in the PowerBook while there as long as she's using the correct adapter to convert the North American plug-type to the type needed. We were in Paris last year and had no problems, so I'm thinking it should be the same with Istanbul, but would appreciate any advice anyone may have?
    And, while I've never read anything definitive to confirm this, is it true that the power bricks that come with the PowerBook actually convert the power so as to be able to use it in different parts of the world (as long as you have a plug adapter)? Like I said, I've had no problems doing this in the past, so I assume this is true, but again, just wondering if anyone knows for sure?

    To answer this question you can always look at the label on the power supply (of any appliance, not just Macs). If it only says 120, it's only going to work on US-type power grids and you'll need a transformer too. If it says something like 100-240 volts, it's good anywhere in the world and you only need an adapter, no transformer.
    My brick has labels on two sides and the voltage range is listed on only one of those, so if you don't see it, turn it around.
    You might consider an adapter with a surge protector if the power quality at the destination might be unstable.

  • Please advise me on external hard drive for PowerBook G4!

    Hi, I have a PowerBook G4 12" and I'm constantly getting rid of photos and music as a result of getting the 'startup disk almost full' message. I don't have a large amount of music/photos, so I need a compatible external hard drive with only a reasonable amount of memory, and preferably costing no more than £100 (less if possible).
    My CD/DVD drive isn't functioning, so I'd need something that will just plug in and work!
    Any advice would be gratefully received. Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
    You have two choices ... buy one or build one. For either option, recommend you get one with a firewire connection. Usually comes with a USB connection also. Powerbooks don't put out enough electrical juice on USB cables and can run into trouble using a USB-connected hard drive (unless it's through a powered hub). Also, if you want to be able to boot off your external hard drive, Powerbooks can only boot using a Firewire connection.
    If you can find an external hard drive using the Oxford chipset, that is a plus, as they work well with our macs. Cannot recommend Western Digital external hard drives, as they have dodgy electronics in the case. The hard drives themselves are fine. You can look for something portable like http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/on-the-go or something desktop-bound like http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATAFW800_FW400USB . OWC does ship internationally, and you may be able to find their brand in UK. Or something similar.
    Build your own is actually pretty easy ... find a case you like, buy a hard drive (get a larger size than you'll think you need), bolt the hard drive into the case, plug it into the board, done! The advantage of doing that is you usually get a longer warranty than many external drive/case combinations you might buy. Many are one year and the drives can be three years. Some external drive/case combinations are up to three years warranty, too.

  • PowerBook G4 has loud buzzing, then freezes, now won't start

    I have a PowerBook G4 which started to make low "grinding" noises when it worked hard. It had done this for maybe a couple of months: sometimes the position (on lap or on table, etc) seemed to affect it. I always figured it was the fan(s). But a little while ago it suddenly started making a loud buzzing noise, like a fuzz-tone electric guitar or maybe an electric razor. If I put it to sleep the noise would start, and it would not start immediately upon re-awakening. I'm not really sure where the noise was coming from. Otherwise the computer was still functioning normally, so I figured a fan was going bad. Then it just froze, and I had to turn it off. Upon powering on, it got to the point with a gray screen, an Apple logo, and a bar that spins in a circle. Never more than that. I've booted the install disk and run Disk Utility: it found some big discrepancy, in a file allocation I think, but fixed it. Since then I've repaired and verified: disk appears OK. I've run the hardware tests and everything tests OK. I can also get the terminal by booting from CD 1, and can do directory listings of the disk contents. So the disk seems to be OK. I removed the suspect fan: the left one, and looked at it. Aside from some dust in the filter it looked and spun fine, as far as I could tell.
    Upon booting in "verbose" mode, I get the following:
    member [46]: dsFindDirNodes returned - 14071, count = 2147483646
    member [46]: Couldn't find root user. Sleeping and trying again.
    These two lines just repeat...
    I've got two questions here:
    1) What should I do to get the computer operational again? Is there a netinfo restore I can do, or should I reinstall the OS (10.4) from the install disks?
    2) How can I find out what caused the original problem?

    An update: I have reinstalled the OS, and all my user files were still there in Previous Systems, so I lost no data. The noise has recurred a few times, and I listened for its location: it really did sound as though it was coming from the upper left. No system freeze, though: the noise stopped on its own after the period of intense cpu activity finished. I have checked the disk with the Disk Utility, and it verifies (I did not do this in single-user mode, however). So far, so good: it looks as though my left rear fan is going bad.
    Could that somehow cause the system lockup? If maybe the system temperature reached a high point?
    I have installed the iStat widget and have looked at that when I hear the low "grinding" sound, and it shows the left rear fan running at about 1740 rpm. But the right fan is at 0. Is this normal?
    The Apple Hardware reported no errors: I guess that means both fans are at least operational enough for the test. But what will make the system use the right fan as opposed to the left? Is maybe the right fan not coming on, then the left fan has to work too hard, and so now is failing? I have no idea what a "normal" rpm is for those fans.
    Also, at this point maybe this topic is more suitable for another forum. If so, please advise.

    I purchased a used Powerbook G4 1Ghz on eBay. Is it difficult to install a new internal HD? I am thinking of putting a 160GB in it.

    Just in case you haven't taken the decision this is my personnal experience on a PB 15 1.5mhz.
    I have changed the HD and DVD drive.
    The most difficult part was definitively opening the PB. It took me a bit of fiddling to take of the top plate of the with the kb without damaging anything. Just never use forces.
    The HD was the easier to swap as less screws. I cloned the old drive on the new one and swapped them over, and after a couple of reboot, it works just like new.

    I am so happy to have a all in one solution now. Be careful if you are changing the dvd drive. There is a module glued on the top of it, that need to be removed before the swap. Make sure to note the position of this module as it has a little space cut out on the top cover to fit nicely.
    I think the total time to do it all was less than 40 min being very careful and meticulous by remembering the position of each screw and following the step by step procedure on iFixit.com.
    The connectors are a bit intimidating, as they are micro connectors as surface component, so make sure you touch the chassis regularly to get rid off static electricity in you.

  • Being Shocked/Broken USB/Turbon fan and powerbook

    I have a 12" powerbook G4 - 867 mhz operating the most 10.4.2, 40 gigs, and 1.12 GB ram.
    I bought this from an apple store in April 2003, shortly after they came out. In October, the hard drive became corrupted and Apple replaced it, but I lost all my data. This happened again in December. Then, I decided to up my ram from 256MB to 640MB using memory from apple (I foolishly bought it from them spending a lot of inheritance on it - something I thought would be a good value). Next September (2004), my hard drive became corrupted again and apple replaced the hard drive, but very unwillingly. When they received the powerbook it had the wrong hard drive in it, one not supported by apple. Since I don't know how to even open the powerbook, I was perplexed by the whole matter. After three hours on the phone, I got them to fix the problem. Turns out it was a service center that apple no longer works with that changed the hard drive.
    Recently (a few months ago) my powerbook has been acting up. It gets incredibly hot (58 degrees Celsius) even with the fan on (I actually posted something like this in March or so). I don't run any huge programs, though I usually have itunes and adium always open. I think that because the fan was constantly on, the fan may have broken somewhat and the fan now makes a rattling sound whenever it's on, making a really annoying noise that can be heard by people I'm talking on the phone with. I couldn't quite figure out why it got so hot. I even bought a fan that goes underneath the computer to cool it down, and while this works, the fan comes on eventually, still making the annoying sound. I investigated this by looking at activity monitor and couldn't figure it out. The processor rarely ventured above 30% of it's power. I backed up my things, did a clean install, reinstalled everything one by one until the computer made the noises it did. It didn't take me long to do that, as just turning the computer on forced the fan to turn on and not work so well. Whenever I took it to the apple store it was too loud in the store to hear the fans so they looked at me like I was crazy. So I wanted to give up on them and figured this was just another corporation trying to screw the little guy. It annoyed me, but I got on with my life.
    Randomly, about two months ago one of the USB ports started to work only occasionally, and according to my friend who is somewhat of a computer geek, it was not providing enough power to my devices. I figured I would take it to the apple store once I got home from school for fall break (I live two blocks from an apple store at home).
    Then I decided to upgrade the memory on my computer about three weeks ago. Although apple officially only supports 640 MB for this model of powerbook, I had heard that it could take an additional gig and upgraded. It works(ed) fine. I'm able to run more programs at once, but the computer still gets really hot. Still, the CPU is only working about 30%.
    Then I realized that I should probably try it under a new user. I created a new user account, but still both problems persisted.
    So then last night, I noticed that the left shell of my powerbook was giving me an electric shock. It went away when I unplugged the powerbook, but came back as I plugged it back in. (kinda weird though, being that the shell is made of aluminum) It didn't hurt, but after using my computer it was making my hand rather sore, kinda like if I had been lifting something all day. I figured that this couldn't be good, so I shut the book off and figured I would go to the apple store today because I came home today.
    Well, when I got home I set up an appointment to meet at the "genius bar". When I got there I explained the history of my powerbook and the problems I had been having recently. When he got onto my computer he noticed that I had 1.12 gigs on my computer. Immediately he told me that he could do nothing unless I put in the original 256 MB that were in the powerbook w

    USB 2.0 hubs and devices increase the PB's fan activity. For connecting low speed devices, use a 1.1 hub. If you need an external hard disk, better choose a Firewire or a Combo drive.

  • Static Electricity causing Aluminum Shelled Notebooks to freeze??

    Once in awhile, when I come back to my computer, I get "shocked" by the aluminum body of my MacBook Pro (just for the record, this has happened to me too since the Titanium and the previous [same design] Powerbook) .... and it'll freeze the OS.
    Nothing moves, and I have to hard restart.
    Does this happen to anyone else? It seems like it happens when the static discharges on the trackpad.
    What is up with this???

    When using my PowerBook G4, I sometimes feel the zap of static electricity when I first touch it...and if my finger was close enough to the trackpad, the zap 'stuns' the trackpad for several seconds. It's difficult to move the cursor very far. After several seconds the responsiveness returns and everything is normal. This is with the factory power supply and either the two prong adapter or cable with grounded plug.
    Also my Mac Pro (and my previous machine, a PowerMac G5) seems susceptible to static. Apparently my desk chair builds up a charge when I'm sitting at the computer for long periods and if I put the computer to sleep and then get out of the chair, the computer wakes back up. My G5 did the exact same thing. The other morning it was particularly cold and I draped a shirt over the back of my chair and the static from that woke the computer. As I walked into the room I could feel the shirt crackling and raising the hair on my arm.
    The Mac Pro has a grounded plug, but the machine is sitting on a carpeted floor under my desk... I've been wondering if I should find a mat or something to put it on.

  • Static Electricity Discharge

    i just got a new macbook and whenever i put it in its case to travel it builds up a lot of static electricity and i get shocked, when i take it out and touch a metal part (screw or usb port). does this cause damage to the laptop? if so, how could i tell? it is important to note that the computer is off whenever i get shocked.

    While a bit of static electric discharge probably won't hurt anything I wouldn't touch any of the I/O ports. There's some screws visible in the case that I'd try to remember to touch before you go plugging something into the USB or such port.
    I've not really encountered too much static electricity in my MacBook (too humid in Indiana in the summer I guess) but I remember my PowerBook used to shock me. Never had any trouble with it.

  • 2005 PowerBook G4 12"

    I have a circa 2005 PowerBook G4 12" laptop, that I would love to use for my 7 yr daughter, but IU can't get any flash sites to run, and trying to update software but it will not install.
    It this a lost cause or what am I missing? Is this machine just a nice coaster at this point?

    Keyboard MAYBE, if your PowerBook has bluetooth, but the amount of effort it'd take to just save like $20 on some USB keyboard wouldn't be worth it. The monitor is a big no however. I don't know of a single Apple laptop that has video inputs.
    If you are, or have a good friend, who's an electrical engineer and wants to spend some quality time with a multimeter working out what pins on the video connector does what, then rig up your own adapter to DVI... You could probably remove the display and mount it on a wall or something and use it that way. But again, the effort and time involved really just doesn't seem worth it.

  • Bugs in a Powerbook? (the little live creature bugs!!)

    All of a sudden out of nowhere, in my BRAND NEW apartment, bugs have been appearing. And we all know where bugs migrate too, that's right, my glowing powerbook screen (even though I have all the lights on in the room). Now I try and get these buggers, but they're so fast that the run down to the space between the hinge of the display and the main body of the computer before I can try and get them without destroying my display while squishing away. So naturally I quick like pick up my powerbook and try and get them from down wherever I think they are, but they're always just magically gone. This has been going on for about once a day for a week.
    Now this really isn't really a problem with Apple here, but they seem to keep disappearing in an area where there are air vents for the laptop. Do you think they're going in there? Wouldn't the heat scare 'em away? Are they getting fried once they get in? Is that why my fans are always on no matter what!? (Yes, I have the always running powerbook fans problem. I've given up. I just say it's a Tiger "bug" (hehe) because that's when it became a problem.) There doesn't seem to be anything I can do about this other then look for a hole in my wall or something, but I thought it was kinda a funny story, and I also do honestly worry about potential damage if they are going into Hades underworld that is my constantly 65C powerbook to be burnt to death. I haven't smelt any roosting bugs yet... but....

    Fortunately, I don't have a cockroach problem, but instead some little winged creatures that are small enough to get inside that spot I'm talking about. So if they are indeed going in there, according to the article, they could build up over time and cause me problems after all.
    I wonder what I can do about it....
    1) I could take a can of compressed air and just blow 'em around in there
    But then wouldn't they all just end up at the front and that wouldn't really fix anything...
    2) Maybe I could like, take a vacuum and try that...
    But I don't have a vacuum (wood flooring), and wouldn't that be like dangerous for electrical shocks and stuff?
    I'll be in Tokyo in a few weeks and I've gotta go to the Apple store anyways to point out how their solution to my iPod problems is just resetting it is no longer acceptable since it needs to be done about once a week, so I'll ask them what they think. I'm sure any normal person would at least chuckle, so they'll probably sit there stone faced. Meh.
