My review: N95 Firmware v20, one day old!

Well - I have flashed the firmware and been using my "new" (for it certainly seems like a new phone) N95 all day now. It has only crashed once (curiously enough clicking on the top right link on the http://mosh.nokia.com page, a small green right-facing arrow). I certainly can't claim that level of stability with my desktop PC... so my one crash is par for the course, and very impressive indeed!
As many people have mentioned, there is a lot more free RAM now. Exactly how much is really immaterial as it is the enhanced capability of the phone which has resulted from this boost that matters. As a pretty exhaustive test I did the following:
Whilst on speaker phone to my business partner he sent me an email to my Hotmail account.
I opened up the messaging app and went to my Windows Live mail box.
I opened the email and downloaded an 85k Word document attachment on it.
The QuickOffice viewer opened the Word file.
Within the Word file was a web link - I needed to look at this and so copied it to the clipboard.
Returning to the menu I opened the browser and navigated to the link from the clipboard. The page was laden with graphics and a tonne of text. I zoomed to 50% and scanned through to read the information I needed.
Leaving the browser open, and just for the hell of it, I went to the menu and launched Widsets which duly connected to my WLAN and loaded up my widgets. I scrolled to the Darla Mack Mobile blog widget and opened it up, selecting the first story within (about the v20 firmware, of course!). This news post had a 70% of screen sized image on the page too.
Throughout all of this I changed screen orientation a number of times using both the slider and the option in the browser's menu. I also had a call blacklist application, as well as the excellent MobiGenie voicemail application running in the background at all times.
Before I closed everything down, I loaded Y-Task's memory module to see how much RAM was free - 6.7M of free RAM!!! Now that's what I'm talking about!!!!
I'd just like to say to anyone anywhere who has ever harboured or proffered the opinion that "it's a phone, it's not meant to do all that" or some variant thereof - what absolute rubbish! This new firmware has made the phone multi-taskable to such an extent that at last, the N95's slogan "it's what computers have become" can at last ring true!!
As for battery usage improvements, the fullness of time will reveal whether it really makes an impact. In the mean time, today, I have tested it as follows:
I have performed a firmware upgrade(!)
I took three backups on PC Suite via content copier
Used USB Mass transfer to copy 370MB of data from my memory card, via the phone
Installed 30 applications to the phone
Restored data to the phone (and subsequently reformatted the phone!) 3 times
Played with the web browser for 50+ mins on WiFi.
Chatted on MSN Messenger for around 30 minutes
Took 8 photos at 5MP each, most with flash
Played around in general with the phone for about 3 hours, on and off
Performed the aforementioned uber-test on the phone
Spoken in total for (according to my log) 2h09m
Sent 9 text messages
Watched one streaming video from my gallery, lasting 6 mins
My battery has JUST, after all of that, hit the low battery warning. I think that you'll agree that's an impressive performance for the N95. This is all with the phone set to lowest brightness, non 3G mode etc. to conserve maximum power of course, so that extra jolt of power that the N95 8Gb batteries have would still not go amiss... I suspect that I'd have been able to do a lot less if I was using high speed mobile networks for the data tasks I listed above.
The camera is also very much improved, about 3-4 times faster overall. It seems to produce better quality images with finer resolution of individual pixels. I think (?) they have increased focal length on macro shots from 10-40cm to 60cm (I could be wrong there). The update massively reduced shot-to-shot time and the simple addition of the processing image message really improves the process no end, curiously enough! Also, there is funny gray line grid mode (er, what's this acutally for??).
There are numerous tweaks here and there, like new sub-folders in the menus (very handy indeed) and new versions of some apps.
There are some rather glaring omissions however:
Nothing has been done with the accelerometer functions, no auto-rotate or tilt-navigation (a la RotateMe / Nokmote).
Videos and photos are still grouped together in the gallery and the 'albums' feature feels a bit like an afterthought (at the very least I would expect folders or album icon or something to show up in the photo/video stream).
There is still no control over compression of JPEG images from the camera (although this will probably be a minor issue to many).
The slider menu (which Darla Mack quite rightly commented on) from the N81 which allows you to set up how the slider action causes your phone to behave - where is it? This is such an obvious requirement for the N95 and has been the frequent cause of complaints on many forums since the N95's launch
There are a number of applications / software features, for example the multimedia menu, which are already present on other phones which have not been included here. Indeed I believe that some of the core apps from the N95 8GB are more advanced still... given the mess Nokia made of the N95-1 it would seem only courteous to have provided a full set of the latest core apps and menus
There are many other niggles, but I'm going to leave those ones down to personal tastes. That and the fact that I'm a software designer myself, so I'm always likely to think I can see a better way to do it!
To sum up, this firmware update was very much needed and overdue. Nokia's handling of this issue and of it's customers has been appalling. Making people wait for 5 months without word, having superceded a very flawed and expensive phone was not, under any stretch of the imagination, a good way to go about things.
Now that it v20 is here, the N95 flies! It is suddenly reborn and I'm so glad I own it now. It works beautifully and is so stable... it really is a pleasure to use now. I'm glad of my memory card slot and camera lens cover - I wouldn't trade this up for an N95 8gb or anything else I've seen on the market now! (yes that includes you iPhone!! ;P )
My final thought on all of this? Thank Jebus they fixed the infernal keypress bug!!! XD

To be fair, this update addresses nearly all of the concerns that we've had. It specifically addresses the top 2 concerns - memory handling and the poor performance of the camera application, slow load times and processing times.
There are a bunch of other updates as well which are just icing on the cake.
I think through 3rd party programs you can achieve most of what you are trying to do. I'm sure the n95 will recieve yet another update. The attention they have put into updating the phone to support the music store and ngage means that it will recieve additional bug fixes, especially once they begin to get a revenue stream from these new services being launched in december.
I think the n95 if anything has been shown to be a winning device. I believe it will continue to have Nokia's support due to the fact that it is one of the most capable devices in the lineup. I believe the 5 month development time since the last update is due to how comprehensive the overhaul of the firmware has been. Now that version 20 is out, we will see smaller incremental updates. The tough part (overhauling the memory system and operating system, better battery management etc) is over.
I'm really enjoying my device now.

  • My one day old MacBook pro just turned off and it won't come back on either through mains or battery power

My one day old MacBook pro just turned off and it won't come back on either through mains or battery power it's as if the unit is completely dead. Even with the mains plugged in there is no green or orange light to say its charging or full charged. The battery was fully charged anyway seconds before the screen went off.

When you say no green or orange light are you refering to the little led on the magsafe connector?  That could mean either the charger/cable are bad or the circuitry in the MBP is faulty.  Since this is a brand new MBP best bet is to take it back to an Apple Retail store and have the genius bar staff take a look.  They can determine if it needs to be reparired or replaced.

  • N95 firmware v20 bugs??

I just found 1 probs with this new firmware (v20),
-camera did not shut down and exit automatically when the camera shutter is closed.
Did anyone has experiences like me?

    Hi,
I'm not sure I can call this a bug, but I came across this once as well. Yesterday I opened the camera cover and took some photos, I wanted to take some more so I left the cover open for a while until the camera went into standby. I'm not entirely sure if I re-activated the camera before closing the cover, but when I did, the camera application did not close.
Actually this was a welcome surprise for me as I wanted the cam app ready for some instant snaps... Though I can't seem to get the cam app not to close now I probably stumbled upon a bug that requires some rare or special conditions in order to surface...

  • N95 Firmware v20.0.015 Taking a long time

    Hi,
Can anyone tell me how long the firmware update should take?
I have had the Nokia Software Updater "Downloading Updates" for about an hour.
I have a fairly fast internet connection if that helps?
    Thanks
    Bill

Something has gone wrong with the update or you tried to update using a dial-up internet connection.
You could try a hard reset:
    1. Switch off the phone.
    2. Hold down the following three buttons: Green (call answer button), * button, and '3' button.
    3. While holding these buttons, press the power button and switch on the phone.
    4. When the message 'Formatting' appears on the screen, release all of the buttons.
If this fails then your only option is a repair which will be covered under warranty.

  • W510 is one day old and sucks more than my 3 year old computer

My Thinkpad W510 just arrived yesterday. Everything on it is great (it doesn't really suck as much as my title makes it seem) except for 2 very annoying things (three if you count one USB outlet not being recognized). From the very first startup, whenever I click on the start menu to bring up the list, it will stay open from anywhere to 1-2 seconds to 5-6 seconds before exiting to the desktop without me doing anything to cause it to do this... it happens EVERY time and it is extremely frustrating because I don't even have enough time to launch a program.
Secondly I went to open the Bluetooth program so that I could connect my phone to it and (SURPRISE!) whenever I was lucky enough to have the 5 - 6 seconds before the start menu closed automatically, I would click the Bluetooth program and NOTHING HAPPENS... Maybe I just don't know that the program file is there for decoration while there's some other way that you initiate your Bluetooth. In that case then the joke is on me... But the startup thing is still extremely annoying, and I know that isn't my misunderstanding of anything.
Can anyone help me out with this? Apparently Lenovo's technical support cannot since I called (since I got the extended 3 year warranty then I thought I might as well put it to use within the first 24 hours of owning the computer) and I had to really struggle to understand their techie's broken English, he obviously wasn't familiar with my computer's programming because when he told me to do certain things to get to a certain screen, nothing went the way he said it would. After about 10 minutes of him attempting to help me, he told me to intentionally prevent my computer from starting up properly, made it show me a ton of error screens, and then promptly ended the conversation, leaving me there to reboot and repair the errors...
Through the grapevine I've heard that Lenovo's computers are supposed to be some of the best on the market but this is my second computer with them (I wasn't very impressed with the first one) and I am just becoming less and less favorable of Lenovo as each problem occurs... Very frustrating. Could anyone help me with any of these problems?

Lenovo support (for me in Canada at least) is based in Atlanta, so I'm surprised you found a tech with bad English...
Your problems sound like windows problems, not hardware problems -- are you running XP or Windows7? If you google based on your OS, there are threads to be found on slowing down the start menu behaviors.

  • One day old iPOD 30g Video randomly turns off

Title says it all...tried all of the Rs, even restored it. Plays fine for a little while, then BAM....turns off, just after a small pop is heard subtly in the headphones (I assume it is the amp shutting off.) Then you can hear the hard drive powering down. Sometimes I restart it and it works fine for a little while, other times it turns off just as I go to navigate the menus. Anyone else have this problem?

Yeah...got everything....tried the Best Buy route and apparently Apples restrictions for returns are quite rigorous and without a receipt, I am screwed.
I won it from Georgia Pacific at a Builder's conference. I am going to try and contact them from the number that is one the shipping label, but I do not have high hopes for that. After that, if apple requires some kind of receipt, I am completely screwed. According to Best Buy, without a receipt, Apple charges $250 to service the thing...might as well buy another at that rate, and at that point....eh no..I stick with my Hi-MD

  • One day old - no volume on certain songs

I just picked up my first Touch yesterday. Synced a bunch of songs from my sister's playlist. No problems-played fine in the car, with headphones etc. Started fiddling with itunes on my computer and hooked up the ipod to it (slow internet connection). Now only the older albums play with sound...the newer artists (with album displays) show that they're playing but there is no sound - tried headphones, car adapter and nothing. The old songs and new music video I downloaded today play and sound fine, though....
    So frustrating! Any suggestions??

I think what is happening is that those songs that are not playing are DRM'd. In iTunes, you can click on the song and authorize it to play on your computer (you can do this on five different computers). When you get done, resync your iPod and you should be fine.

  • One day old Macbook Pro issues

I just recieved my macbook yesterday and when I got home I installed vm fusion and installed a Vista64 VM and ran about 88 updates. I got up this morning and shut down the mac and brought it to the office and when I started it all I could get was the screen with the apple logo and the animation below it. It would not get past this point. I booted off a mac mini OS X disk and went to disk utility and it could not see any partition on the hard drive. What caused this and is it possible to fix it w/o my system disk that are at home? I did not think I would need them at the office.

I reinstalled the OS and everything seems to be working fine. I did not mind as I did not have anything on the laptop that I could not replace yet. I'm not sure what messed up the directory structure. This is my first Mac and really did not know what was the cause of this. But this has been a learning experience. Thanks for all the help and advise. It was allot more than the local apple store offered. I was advised by them to call Apple since this was a custom ordered macbook.

  • Lumia 1320 - one day old and hanging

I purchased a Lumia 1320 yesterday (to replace my Lumia 800). I have been using the phone without issues for the past 24 hours. I just finished configuring my data and apps, and it has started hanging.
I have reset the phone a couple of times (holding down the on button for 10 secs). it goes through a reboot, teases me by allowing me to navigate to anything I like, but once I get intyo the application (eg settings, wifi page) I cant get back - the home and back buttons dont function (although the phone vibrates), neither do the camera, on/off, search buttons do anything.
The only thing that does anything is another reset - and all that does is take me back to the same problem
I believe there is 350Mb of storage left on the phones onboard memory.
    Any suggestions? Thanks

Are you using external SD card? Probably an incompatible SD card could be causing these issues otherwise it could be a case of faulty device.

  • New battery one day old only 93% health?

I downloaded iStat on my MBP that I got yesterday that I used the battery til it died, charged and let it charge til full then used a bit. It says only 4:45 battery life left and istat says it only has 93% health... this is brand new, why? Thanks!

    Rich Camp wrote:
iStat says there has been 9 cycles and then randomly without plugging in or anything it went to 10 cycles in an hour? thanks
A cycle is a charge and a discharge. It is perfectly normal for the cycle count to increase while running on battery.
Apple says that as long as the battery health is 80% or more the battery is within specifications.

  • My 120 GB hard drive says I have used 17.85 GB and its one day old.

Is this normal? I've downloaded about 6 programs but thats it when they were all downloading they said I needed to have MB free, not GB, that is why I am wondering. I also have iWork preinstalled.

Yes that is normal unless you do a custom install and get rid of files you don't want. The OS and ancillary programs take up at least 15 to 20 gig of space.
If you really want to see what is there try whatsize.

I was using my old iPhone 4 as an iPod for 4  months when one day I got this error message saying "phone is deactivated visit your local to reactive" ... what the heck??? now the freakin thing won't even charge!!!

Nope. I've already turned off cellular data. It happens regardless, as soon as it is done powering on.
I suspect it might just be built into the phone's firmware to do that... and I have to hit "ignore" whenever it happens, but I just wanted confirmation of that...

    Try the remaining items of:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
