My System seems to be degrading

Hi Guys,
I got my new laptop last weekend and I decided to switch from gentoo to arch. The Laptop is an X220T with an SSD. The installation is a fully encrypted linux system with a separate /boot filesystem ans shared /, /home and so on on another file system, which is the aforementioned encrypted ext4. As this is a touch device, I decided to check out Gnome 3, though I am usually an Ion user.
So, now my problem is the following: After a few days of usage and maybe 10 reboots, the system started "degrading". At first I was unable to login into gnome, it simply showed a message that something had gone wrong and I should try to log out and in again. This however never worked, a reboot fixed the issue at first. After a few times this came up, I was not able to fix this issue with reboots. After a bit of playing around, forcefully reinstalling the whole system, cleaning up my home directory, I noticed that the pacman binary was an empty file. However, mount never threw any errors, the filesystem was always clean. So I thought, I must have done something wrong, as this is my first try with arch and I should simply reinstall.
So I reinstalled two days ago and at first everything was fine. Now, about 60 minutes ago I again got my first error while logging in: Something had gone wrong and I should log out and in again. This again fixed nothing, however, a reboot did.
I am a bit sorry, that I didn't copy the xsession-errors file, but: It said something about that the gnome-settings-daemon.desktop did not register in time.
Could you please give me a hint what I can do about this?
Marvin

Btw, something I forgot: I just created a sha1sum of every file in /, so I will see what is going on. Also, I ran the short and long SMART tests which both returned that the drive is okay. Also, the Intel Tool for this drive tells me the same.

When I click the launchpad, (I have icons on 2 pages) how do I return to the 1st set after the system seems to automatically shift to 2nd page?.
I'm not aware of anything I might have done, but it's annoying to want to use an icon on the 1st page, only to see all the icons on page 1 shift rapidly to the left
and I can't find a way to shift back to page 1.
Is there a way of getting all my Launchpad icons onto 1 page by adjusting their size?

Thanks for that. I think the 2 little white dots were hidden by the white frame round the desktop picture on my screen
As you can see from the pic, there is a broad white frame around the image.

    Hi!
You have to give more information.
    1. Which system do you have?
    2. Have you done any maintenance of the system lately?
    3. Which Pages do you have?
    4. Have added any third party applications recently?
    5. what else can you tell us about your computer.
    6. Error messages when trying to open the documents?

"The agent has not collected files matching the file name "*.exe" or the path "*\*" from this computer because the files exceed the maximum size limit of 256 KB.  You may need to reconfigure the maximum size limit to allow file
collection at the next scheduled agent interval."

I don't know by default it is happening and I am new to sccm so I don't aware of all features please tell me how to resolve it.
SW inventory is NOT setup be default, even if you do enable it, it doesn't inventory anything. File collection is options of SW inv. But it IMO should never be used at all.
So, Exactly how did you setup SW Inv.?

I don't understand what you mean by this. Can you please elaborate and/or include a screenshot?

  • Since loading Yosemite, My system seems to have slowed down abit and was hoping to find a way to get the speed up again.

I have an older IMAC 2007, and have just been able to load Yosemite on. When I click on anything, It now hesitates before going to the next page. Is it just the older system or is there a way to clean up the system to get it running faster. Thanks in advance

  • HT1430 My  IPAD Mini touch screen is not responding, it is showing a message icloudBackup but the back up is not happening and the system seems to be hanged

My  IPAD Mini touch screen is not responding, it is showing a message icloudBackup but the back up is not happening and the system seems to be hanged?

Perform a "hard reset" on the device by pressing down and holding the home button and the sleep/wake button for up to 30secs. until you see a black screen with the Apple logo, then release.
Then test to see if it solved the problem.

  • Since downloading Mtn.Lion my epson printer doesn't work correctly & the entire system seems to be slower plus my iMac now disconnects from my wifi every time the mac sleeps. Can anyone help me with these issues?

I am having problems with my Imac (approx 1 yr old) every since I downloaded (from the App.Store) Mountain Lion.  I am a working mom with 3 toddlers.....I have very little time to work on the computer which I primarily use for photograhpy needs.  I am not computer savvy enough to figure out how to "fix" the new issues/problems and am frustrated.  I am hoping someone can help me........
Issues just since downloading Mountain Lion:
    1)  My Epson R2400 printer is not printing properly.  It wouldnt print at all from CS5 the first 2 days.  Then just started printing.  The prints aren't nearly as good as they used to be.  I just installed Photoshop Elements 10 and have been able to print but the prints are just awful. I printed a test page and it was perfect.  I've triple checked the settings in the print dialogue box to ensure the correct paper is chosen, etc.  I've never let the printer manage the color before but it is the only option that gives a mediocre print at best.
I've gone to Epson.com.   It says to update driver through Apple for Mtn. Lion.  According to my computer I have no updates.  Printer is connected via USB. Changed the ports, turned printer on & off.  Emailed epson & they said to reset the print queue, which I did.  Restarted the IMac Still no luck.  (The error message I got when trying to print from CS5 is "filter failed." But, as stated before it just started printing today as I was typing this.
I print out pics quite a bit and it seems the only time I have ever had problems is when I upgraded the OSX system. Why is that??  When I upgraded to 10.7 is when I first realized my print quality went down.
    2)  Now every time I "wake" up my computer it has become offline and has to go through the steps to reconnect to my wifi.  Never did that before Mtn.Lion.  I purchased the Airport Extreme Dec 2011.  My computer was always connected before the update.  Now I have to scroll down & pick my network & wait for it to connect before proceeding.   I double checked preferences and it is set up to check for updates automatically.  What is that about??
    3)  It just seems that my system overall is slower.  I love my mac but I am frustrated because I don't have the free time needed to do all this problem solving.  I just need it to work properly when I have a few minutes to work on a picture.  I imagine there are other issues, but these are the only  2 areas I've focused on since the upgrade.
I've read different views/feedback on Mtn Lion but haven't come across the printer issue or the wifi connection issue.
Can anyone direct me towards a solution? I really appreciate it!
    T

I just figured out the print quality issue for my wife with her new iMac and new printer.
She replaced both at once and she couldn't understand why her Artisan 730 was lower quality then her Epson R280 when they had the same specs.
Turns out the newer printer had the option to connect via wifi which we used during setup.
The driver options are completely different depending on how you connect.
Once I connected via USB the correct options were available and the print quality was better.
Looking at the R2400 it dies not have wifi, but while researching the problem for my wife someone esle was having an issue updating to the latest printer driver.
If you go into the print utility from the Printer and Scanner system preference and under the general tab you should have driver 5.5.
One user had to delete the old printer driver before Software Update loaded the newer printer driver.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15947486#15947486
On my MacBook Pro (w Snow Leopard) I always had to reconnect my wifi at home when it woke up. I upgraded my router from an old Netgear to a newer N D-Link and stopped having to do that.
I would be surprised you would have that problem with an Airport Extreme, you might check to see if there is a firmware update for it.

  • My Firefox system seems to automatically use a town to provide information those automatic banner displays, but it is NOT my town. How do I set or reset this feature to be my hommetown versus another?

Several different advertisers seem to use an embedded setting to display a map within their banner display, however, it is not my town, but one close by.
A couple weeks ago, a Firefox window popped up, without my involvement, asking me to verify certain information on it. It seemed to be a 'general settings' window from Firefox and I noticed it had the name of the 'other' town listed in the field labeled "Your Location" (or something close to that), so I changed it to the 'correct' name of my hometown and closed the window properly.
This action caused no issues (i.e. it wasn't a Trojan virus or anything) and seemed to have cleared up the incorrect banner maps, maybe as I didn't pay too close attention recently. However, today I again noticed the system using the 'other' town's name when displaying those banner map ads.
How can I set/reset this setting to the name of my correct 'home'town?

You can automatically save downloads without seeing the Open/Save/Cancel dialog in the Options:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > General > "Saves files to"
However, I can't think of a way to have the Open/Save/Cancel dialog always default to Save. I think mine suggests whatever I did last for the same type of content, but I haven't paid close attention.
I'm out of time to address the problem with "do this automatically" but there is one suggestion for why it could be grayed out in this article: [[Change what Firefox does when you click on or download a file]].
Is it possible you had a download-related extension before? To compare settings and extensions, please retain the Old Firefox Data folder on your desktop. Aside from checking the extensions in there, it would be interesting to run a text file comparison on your currently active prefs.js file and your old one in that folder.

  • Just setting up new mac mini however system seems stuck on Bluetooth at startup and not seeing new trackpad or keyboard both wireless?

My new mac mini seems stuck whilst launching for the first time - looking for bluetooth peripherals - they are a new trackpad and wireless keyboard - both in pair mode so I can't see what the issue is..Do I really need to find wired mouse and keyboard to set this up?

Hehehe... Yes, a freshly-booting Mac from the factory can get confused with all that wireless traffic. In the past I've been able to get new Macs to pair with a keyboard and mouse/trackpad by switching the keyboard/mouse/whatever off and then on again while the computer is attempting to find something to pair with. The computer will attempt pairing with the newly-activated device and otherwise pretty much ignore all the other Bluetooth chatter is sees.
That said, whenever I set up a Mac for someone, I always bring a USB keyboard and mouse with me. It makes the process faster and easier. I then set up their Bluetooth input devices later, using System Preferences.

  • System seems unsually unstable

I have a G4 400MHz PPC with 384 MB SDRAM. It's old, yes, but I'm still using it regularly and still like my machine.
However, for some reason, it seems that it can't handle tasks, perhaps 'heavy' tasks, as easily anymore. At least sometimes.
For example, when I used to watch videos in QuickTime or VLC, it would generally play smoothly and maybe drop some frames a little bit if I had something CPU-intensive goin gon in the background. When I played a DVD through the Apple DVD Player, it would virtually always be just fine.
Browsers, messengers, etc. could be open and always the DVD Played fine and VLC/QT would almost always be just fine.
But now? I just watched a DVD and there would be jitters in the film maybe happening every 15-25 seconds or so. To top it off, I only had 3 programs running and none of them use a significant percentage of the CPU or ram. What gives?
I really don't get it... the daily/weekly/monthly maintenance (Cron) runs fairly regularly as it should, and my system is generally just fine and works well enough for me.
Im not stupid when it comes to computers.. I'm no genius, but I've learned quite a bit about computers in general as well as OS X, and even my very-computer-inclined-Linux-nerd roomate is confused.
Any suggestions in regards to diagnosing the issue is appreciated.
Oh, and the DVD was not a homemade one... it was a major film release.

    Hi, Andrew.
    1. Did you rename your Home folder? If so, see "Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4 or later: Return to default desktop, apparent 'loss' of home directory."
    2. Are you using FileVault? If so, try the instructions in "Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4: FileVault - How to verify or repair a home directory image."
    Good luck!

  • The system WAS functioning well, but now the system seems to be checking the relevant mailboxes but nothing downloaded nor able to send e-mail?

I am visiting Brazil and using the hotel's internet connection. The Thunderbird was functioning very well since Saturday, but yesterday onwards, it stoped "functioning"! It seems to be going through the relevant mailboxes, but nothing is being downloaded. Any e-mail which were received previously, when double clicked, simply does not respond! I do not have any error messages from the system!? Consequently, I am unable to send or receive e-mails presently. I went to my webmail site and I can of course receive and send messages, but only for that site. I have 2 other sites, and cannot access them? Any help?

Sorry, that was just one example - I managed to find those emails via alternate methods. Too often I'd like to do a more sophisticated search than mail seems to support. For example, when you don't know how something is spelled but you know part of the word or you are searching for, or looking for a phrase but not sure of the tense or plurals.
The question remains how to do an advanced search or even simple loose pattern matching.
Mail continues to fall very short of Eudora (except that it doesn't crash and does display html emails). How about just being able to see more than one mailbox at a time? Or multiple search results at one time. How about the ability to label emails? I really miss Eudora's simple option-click to quickly gather emails based on any mailbox field. I really miss Eudora's ability to reply to more than one email in a single response. And, I sorely miss Eudora's ability to re-title and even edit existing emails.
...and it appears I'm not alone.

  • System seems slower after new hard disk installation.

    Dear all:
After a recent hard disk crash that caused me to lose a lot of important professional and personal information I replaced my old defective hard disk (a Seagate Barracuda 1.0 TB internal SATA drive) with a new one (a Seagate Barracuda 1.5 TB internal SATA drive).
The issue I am now experiencing may or may not be related to the new drive but I wanted to post it here and have your opinions about it. It seems to me that since this new hard disk was installed that my system is slower than it was before. Something else I noticed is that iTunes seems to hang every once in a little while, freezing and a while later resuming its operation (as if it were frozen while trying to read the information from its library located on the new hard disk ???).
Since the capacity of the new disk has increased some 50% compared to the older one, could this be the issue ? Can the fact that the 1.5 TB hard disk are new technology be a reason why this is happening (some issues still not completely resolved) or could it be that the capacity being so much greater requires the drive to work harder at finding the data ?
In case the information is relevant the drive's speed is 7200 rpm but I couldn't find any information (including Seagate's own web site) about its seek time spec.
Something else I noticed is that since I've installed the two 1.5 TB internal drives the fans inside my G5 have become more noticeable, raising their speed to a noisy level every now and then depending on what I am doing with my computer. This didn't happened before when I had only one internal hard disk installed (my original purchase configuration) and when I had (2) internal 400 GB hard disks installed.
    Any ideas ?
    Thank you in advance.
    Joseph Chamberlain

Turns out I used screws that were too long above the optical drive which blocked it...

  • Yellow Lights for Assets, But the System Seems Idle

Have a HD (16:9) project finished except the video assets for buttons all have yellow lights. Opened Activity Monitor and it seems to confirm that the system is at rest, but two tasks are red and unresponsive.
    DSPX_AENCODER (NOT RESPONSIVE)
    DSPX_ENCODER (NOT RESPONSIVE)
It is a dual-quad MacPro with 12GBytes of RAM. Nothing is running except DVD-SP and Activity Monitor. Cores are all at rest except for occasional one-bar of activity. 1.3GByte of RAM is total used with 10.7GB free. Disk indicates 4-5 I/Os per second with 0 date read and/or written.
I have killed the tasks, restarted the program, and re-booted the system multiple times. DVDSP starts each time with the same two tasks unresponsive.
The main asset, which is the main HD video was compressed using compressor prior to importing into DVDSP. I noticed that while compressing, Activity Monitor told me that the task TRANSCODER was NOT RESPONDING, but the video compression was successful.
Is Activity Monitor trustworthy with Compressor tasks?
Thanks in advance folks. These boards save my life over, and over! Over.

    Anton,
Thanks for your help. That seemed to be the case. The build command caused the yellow assets to complete. However both encoders stayed red in the activity monitor and said they were "not responding," all the time.
Where are the settings for transcoding?
I burned the DVD, and received the message that the burn was successful, but my player connected to the TV would not recognize it. DVD player on the mac will play it, but it hesitates occasionally.
I guess more experimentation is in order.
