MyCloud "ntpd" is AWOL... time initially sync's but won't stay sync'd

My 2TB MyCloud doesn't have "ntpd" running on it. In fact, it doesn't even have an executable for "ntpd". Interestingly, it does *initially* synchronize time with the Linux machine on my LAN if I add the entry "192.168.1.3" to the server pool (here's the line from /etc/ default/ntpdate ) : NTPSERVERS="192.168.1.3 time.windows.com pool.ntp.org" More interestingly, while there is no "ntpd" there *are* "/usr/sbin/ntpdate" and "/usr/sbin/ntpdate-debian", which doesappear to be getting started by "init". But it seems like what it does is sync the time - successfully - with the server on 192.168.1.3, and then exits without starting any sort of "Daemon" on the MyCloud. I discovered this when the time on the MyCloud wandered out of sync, and I successfully ran "invoke-rc.d ntpdate start" andit *did* resynchronize... But there's still no obvious *Daemon* running, and I can only assume it will probably wander out of sync again (which, for anyone who doesn't know why I'm obsessed with this, is a Bad Thing if you're using a system as a backup server as I am.) here are some lines from /var/log/daemon.log : Jul 12 23:56:13 WDMyCloud ntpdate[10074]: Can't find host time.windows.com: Name or service not known (-2)

Meanwhile... trolling around on the net turns up the fact that "ntpdate" is deprecated *and* that "ntpd" has been in Debian as far back as I can remember (and "ntpdate" has not - in fact I think it's a USB program?) ... So, before I go on a massive debugging binge, I thought I'd ask if anyone here knew about this... is there supposed to be a time server running on the MyCloud, and what is its name, and why is WD using the (supposedly deprecated) "ntpdate", and - most importantly - why am I not getting periodic time sychronization? .... Etc...

OK... maybe I didn't explain the sequence of events clearly. Out of the box, there are some entries for ntp servers, but because I didn't enable Internet access, it didn't set the clock right. Then from the "dashboard" I added the address of the local machine that's running "ntpd" - leaving the original entries for the NTPD pool etc. in there as well - and it set the clock right (I also had to enter the same machine's address as the "gateway". Then several days later I noticed that the time had drifted, indicating that "ntpdate" hadn't been successfully run again since that first time when it set the clock. So I ran it again via "update-rc.d" and it again corrected the clock - and I noticed that "ntpd" wasn't running. So, when you said it was aborting because I didn't have a valid entry, I did have a valid entry but the other entries were *not* valid, so I thought you meant it was aborting because of those, even though I had one valid entry... Anyway, now I realize that what's happening is that there's no server, and "cron" is just running "ntpdate" once a day to resync the clock... and I don't think it's running successfully, because I don't see the log messages in /var/log/daemon.log (though it hasn' t drifted noticeably yet either). But, you know what... before I spend any more of anybody's time on this, I *just* discovered that - additionally - both /tmp and /var/log are 100% full: some lines of output from "df -k": tmpfs 102400 102400 0 100% /tmp
/dev/root 1968336 685956 1182392 37% /var/log.hdd
ramlog-tmpfs 20480 20480 0 100% /var/log and there are a *ton* of really bizarre files getting created and messages getting logged, that are clogging them up... So I had probably better go fix that first... just about anything else including the "cron" job that runs "ntpdate" could be failing as a result of not being able to write to the logfiles, etc...

Time Machine Disk Full but won't delete older backups?

My Time Machine has worked since day one. And when my 1TB disk gets full, it deletes the older backups and makes room for new ones.
However, since last week, it tells me there is an error, the disk is full, and I need to make room for XXXX amount of gigs before the back up can be completed.
Why is this happening now?

Time Machine - Backup Starts, But Won't Complete

I've been using Time Machine with a 2TB Time Capsule (purchased a few months ago) that won't do a backup anymore. Here are the error messages:

I've tried verifying and repairing the sparsebundle using the Disk Utility program (no improvement) and I've also tried to reset Time Machine (again, no success). What else do I need to try? The access point and printer sharing work fine, so the problem seems to be software-based.
Any suggestions as to what I should try next? I'm a bit out of ideas.

Perhaps you've downloaded the wrong one. Do you use Internet Explorer as your browser? Is there a specific link in the message that you follow?

External HDD (for Time Machine backup) detected but won't mount on desktop

I have been using this external HDD as my Time Machine backup for many months now. No desktop display settings have been changed (I checked), but now it won't mount on my desktop. I suspect one of my kids was banging around on the keyboard, as they have done in the past, and renamed it. Unfortunately it appears they renamed it to NULL this time around. I didn't think that was possible, but I've plugged it into 3 different Windows and iMac machines, and in all cases the external drive gets detected, but then in all cases it doesn't mount. The Volume Label does appear blank in the device properties.
Is there a way to access my drive again to rename it? Will that allow it to mount again? Or is there a way to access it to just reformat the whole darn thing?

I don't think it's possible to have a null name for a drive so i suspect there is a problem with it. open disk utility. does it show the name of the drive? try repairing it (repair disk not permissions). if that doesn't help you can always reformat it with Disk Utility. select the whole drive ( model, not name) and use the partition tab.

Time Capsule is visible but won't connect - HELP!

We have a Time Capsule that has been happily backing up 2 iMacs and a Macbookpro for a couple of years.
Suddenly, my iMac won't back-up to it;
I can see it in file manager, but it won't connect - it tells me 'Connection Failed - This file server is running on your machine. Please access the volumes and files locally.'
Obviously this isn't correct - it is connected via Ethernet in another building.
I can access it via Airport Utility from my iMac and make all configuration changes, and yet it doesn't appear as an available back-up disk in the Time machine Preferences.
I have tried all the usual stuff of resetting IP addresses, wireless and ethernet connections, resetting TC to factory settings, updating and downdating firmware, erasing the disk contents, etc.
The other iMac still connects to it correctly.
I'm at a loss as to what I can do next - any suggestions???

A persistent, flashing amber light indicates that any of the several potential conditions may require your attention:
o The base station has not yet been configured because it is new, or the reset switch has been set.
o You have selected a security configuration that is not recommended.
o One of several other conditions, such as a disconnected Ethernet cable or invalid IP address has been detected.

If not already, try connecting the iMac directly to the Time Capsule (TC) using an Ethernet cable, and then, access it with the AirPort Utility.
If you run the AirPort Utility, it will show an amber circle on the summary page next to the area(s) causing the problem. Click on this amber circle and it should provide an explanation.

Time capsule direct tv Internet won't stay connected while downloading a movie

I have already changed network name to no caps, spaces, or special characters and less than 20 characters. Still keeps losing connection. What next?

WPA2 Personal security but test with none.
How long does it stay up?
If you locate a laptop there and run inssider for PC or istumbler for Mac .. how many networks can you see. How strong is the signal from the TC.
TC is not renowned as a wifi power house.. so tell us more.

Show date and time in menu bar won't stay selected

Using 10.6.7 with all updates as of the time I am writing this.
Show date and time in menu bar is unselected and unselectable. When I select it (click it) it will unselect itself. I will see the checkmark for 1/2 a second, but won't stay selected.
I've reparied permissions in the Disk Utility as described by a similar post (on an older version of the OS) with no luck.
At a little bit of a loss. Spending the mandatory 30 minutes with various forms of Google searches with no luck.
Looking for new ideas other than an OS restore.

Apple Time Capsule Won't Stay Connected

After Verizon upgraded my router to the 9100EM my Apple Time Capsule Connects to the router but won't stay connected all the time. I have to go into router management console a couple of times a day and reboot it the restore connection. Time Capsule is connected to router by lan cable into port 1 of router. Time capsule set in bridge mode I believe. Just from time to time when I run Air Port Utility Time Capsule has green light but internet goes orange once i reboot I'm good for several hours then loses connection and have to reboot again. Tried looking for other settings to adjust but haven't found anything to help. If any body has any suggestions please help, it just gets old having to reset all the time

If you are using a Mac, which OS is installed?
Use Software Update to make sure you have all the latest updates.
Repair permissions.
Change your router (Airport) channel. Most times this all you have to do!

FIM Reporting initial sync running long time

We have installed FIM Reporting last month , afterwards our FIM reporting initial sync powershell script is running from last month to Sync FIM data with SCSM server , but still only half data is synced with SCSM server ,
we have 4 server
1. Server1 --FIM server
2. Server2 -- FIM database
2. Server3 -- SCSM service manager and SQL server Databases for Service manager and Data warehouse
4. Server4 -- Data warehouse server
As FIM initial sync script is taking long time to sync so we found some errors in Server 4 (Data warehouse server) multiple times during ETL jobs running.

Please give some suggestions to make FIM initial sync faster

Please try Resume-FIMReportingInitialSync instead of starting initial sync once again.
Sadly Initial Sync is very long and even on test environments it can take a long time.
But it seems that data from FIM was successfully moved to reporting database, but it hasn't been calculated by Service Manager correctly between its databases.

Time of initial syncing w/ ethernet

I am new to this board so forgive my first awkward post. I was wondering if anyone was knew how long the first time you sync your ATV w/ your computer should take. Mine seems to be taking forever. I have wired ethernet that is run from my cable modem to a hub & then to the ATV. I started the inital sync when I got it all set up & I belive that was Wednesday night late. Now I have stopped it & started it again after I restarted my computer to see if that would make a difference. Anyway, in more than 48 hrs it has synced 6.61 gig of video, 1021.8 mb audio, & 61.6 mb other. It states its on 294 of 1696. I have had my ipod for years & it sync very quickly. So am I doing something wrong or is this normal? A liitle help would be greatly appreciated.

I have 3 IP address one for each device. So that is
not the problem. We have had all three going at the
same time, as well as, all different combos. My ISP
assigned a new IP address for the ATV so that is not
the problem. Both computers continue to operate at
the same speed as before with little to no slow down.
The process on the sync has sped up a bit since my
last post but is still doing the inital sync.
A network hub is fine for connecting multiple devices and/or computers in a local network, but capaho is correct; you definitely need a router between your cable modem and hub/computers. The lack of a router (which performs NAT and acts as your network gateway) is probably causing your syncing slowdowns.
If you still don't believe us, try this experiment: turn off your hub, disconnect your cable modem from your hub, turn the hub back on and then try syncing your computer and Apple TV. Let us know how long it takes to sync this time...
Assuming you're using a 100 Mbit/s networking hub, it should take around 5 minutes per GB of content (assuming a conservative transfer rate of about 25 Mbit/s). So about 3 hours if you're filling the AppleTV completely (~33 GB).

Is initial sync glacially slow normal?

Moved up to a itouch 64GB from 80GB ipod classic. The initial sync with iTunes library is painfully slow. Almost deathly. Is this normal?
I'm just syncing music. No photo or video. Any way to speed it up?

It's been syncing for 3+ hours and has moved 2100 songs out of 9600 or so. At times it will zip thru 5 or 6 songs in less than 20 seconds, then spend 5 minutes for the next 5/6 songs.
Can I cancel the sync or suspend it without losing what's already been synced?. Then do the rest overnite?

The other day i had to recreate our DFS name space and replication. One of the servers is running an initial sync and has been for around a week and a half. How long is this supposed to take? Its 2tb over a 10mbps leased line so not that
fast, but it still seems like a very long time.
Is there anyway to see how far its got? if its actually progressing at least would take a load off my mind.

2TB over 10 Mbps?! That's insane! Use seeding for DFS to save time & money. See:

Initial Sync and Mobile Home Creation

I have been using PHDs successfully in an OD environment for some time now, but currently am having an issue with the initial sync when a user logs onto a new workstation.
Some background: We are using PHDs as pseudo-network home folders due to limitations in Pro Tools and its inability to function while working off of a network based home. Not ideal, but it's where we are at if we want to allow users to move from room to room but without using network homes...
Our environment:
- AD / OD mixed environment (working beautifully at the moment)
- Separate server acting as home folder host (we'll call it afphome)
- Clients managed by OD via computer groups
The basic issue is that when a user logs onto a new workstation, the initial sync only creates a local home based on the standard template, despite the presence of a sync progress bar (stating "Checking..." only) during the initial log-in. If the user logs out immediately, a sync occurs, but may preferences are overwritten during this sync (namely finder). When the user logs back in, syncs occur normally, but those overwritten preferences are here to stay.
How can I force PHD to do a full "from server" sync when a new home is being created locally, assuming that a network home exists for the user already?

Just found your post as I was having a similar problem. Our setup was with all Apple OD though.
I had exactly the same problem with new workstations having the user setup with the default template. We also had some odd problems syncing specific files we never had trouble with before. Our issue arrived last week when our main sharing and userhomes data drive died and we had to recover from a backup. Once we recovered, everything except for sync of portable home directories came back properly.
After doing some searching, I figured that I did not stand to lose anything if I shut off Server Admin > our server > Settings > General > Server side file tracking for Mobile Home Sync. Rebooted the server. Suddenly the clients with file troubles sync fine and creation of new users on a new workstation actually duplicates the network user.
I'm not sure about other implications of shutting off the server side tracking but now we sync correctly again.
