Naming WebServers in Farm

i need setup a farm with 2 web servers
this servers has name like: webserver01 and webserver02
I will set a load balancer (appliance or software) for distribute requests among 2 servers
my question is if i can set a alias in the DNS: sharepoint.domain.com pointing to the ip of load balancer?
is this recommended?
this works?
what is the best practice?
Thanks
Rexix

yes DNS alias always recommended.
check this Blog to setup NLB on windows server:

if you are using the Hardware Loadbalancer then you have to follow the vendor's documentation.

  • Sharepoint 2013 Foundation three tier farm with two Webservers in NLB

    Heloo,
I have been strugling with a problem the last htree days.
I have instelled and configured a sharepoint 2013 three tier farm with Sharepoint 2013 Foundation and MS SQL 2014 Express. This is a Test Farm and all the servers are Windows 2012 R2.
I have one SQL Server, one Application Server and two Webservers. The tow web servers are configured with Multicasting NLB. The NLB name is "sharepoint.ws.domain.net". The IP of the NLB is also in our DNS Zone.I have made a Web Application with
the name "sharepoint.ws.domain.net" on port 80 (NLB name) and a Site collection with the same name.
Now whene I am working on the Sharepoint Site I get very offen a login Window or I get the message "An error occurred while processing the request on the server. The status code returned from the server was: 0".
The error "An error occurred while processing the request on the server. The status code returned from the server was: 0" comes when I try to create a sub Site (most with no Permissions inheritance)... but not allways. I also get  sometimes
the same message when I upload files (MS Office documents and PDF files).
The login Windows comes whene I am navigating throw the Sites... but also not allways.I go to the Site with an IE11 and the Site is also in the Intranet security sites.
Can you help me on this one...
    Kind Regards
    Ioannis Kyriakidis

With no hostname on the Web Application, you have to create Host-named Site Collections. So that complicates things a bit.
As far as NLB setup, you create Web Applications the same way you would otherwise. NLB is simply installed on both Web Servers and placed into the NLB VIP (virtual IP). The DNS A record points at the VIP.
Also set up your Windows NLB using Unicast instead of Multicast. If you have certain types of switches that block unicast ARP from multiple clients, e.g. Cisco, you may have to make an exception for them (e.g. http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/switches/catalyst-6500-series-switches/107995-microsoft-nlb.html).

  • Best Practices for farm naming conventions

    Hi
I wanted to get some basic best practices and recommendations for farm naming conventions when setting up multiple farms in our environment.
what are the do's and don'ts?

First, figure out why you need multiple farms :-)
I generally name machine accounts based on purpose and location, with a numeral. For example, a SharePoint server in Redmond might be:
    REDSP01, REDSP02, REDSP03...
And a SQL Server dedicated to this SharePoint farm might be:
    REDSPSQL01, REDSPSQL02...
If using a SQL cluster, I might use:
    REDSPSQL01A, REDSPSQL01B...

  • Managed path for host named site collection is farm level or web application level?

    Hi,
I would like to get advice.
I created a webapplication for host named site collections.
these are my host named site collections (except http://sp2013) under my webapplication
    Root Site Collection: http://sp2013
    Site Collection: portal1.sg
    Site Collection: portal1.sg/research
    Site Collection: portal1.sg/intranet
research and intranet managed paths are farm level
all my host named site collection will be accessed by http and https except "intranet" site collection will be only accessed by https
so I changed the Intranet zone for site collection using Set-SPSiteUrl
    Set-SPSiteUrl (Get-SPSite "http://portal1.sg") -Url "https://portal1.sg" -Zone Intranet
    Set-SPSiteUrl (Get-SPSite "http://portal1.sg/research") -Url "https://portal1.sg" -Zone Intranet
    Set-SPSiteUrl (Get-SPSite "http://portal1.sg/intranet") -Url "https://portal1.sg/intranet" -Zone Intranet
Now I need to create "search" site collection for "Enterprice Search Center"
My question is that for the "search" managed path ... should i use farm level or web application level?
"search" site collection will be will be accessed with both http and https also.
    Thanks a lot!

managed path for HNSC is farm level and u can have 20 managed path
while managed path for path based is 20 per web application in your case if you are going to have a a separate web application for search then u will use web app

  • Farm Account cannot access some pages in Central Administration

I am working with a new installation of SharePoint 2013 farm using least-privileged administration. I used a server local admin account to setup SharePoint and to run the Farm setup wizard. During the wizard I used the domain account I had created as the
Farm account. Today I signed in to the Central Admin as the Farm Account (SYSTEM ACCOUNT) and there was a health analyzer problem to correct. "The server farm account should not be used for other services." In the announcement there is a link for
Farm Credential Management. I click the link and the page states "Sorry this site has not been shared with you." I tried to access Security, Configure Service Accounts and got same error. I am able to go to every other link as far as I can tell.
Can anyone share any advice? How can I get around this problem. Thanks for the help.

  • Named Instance in SQL Server 2000

We recently switched to SQL Server 2000 and are now having some
problems. Our SQL Farm set up named instances so we could take
advantage of active/active clustering. In doing this, they set up 2
Named Instances, and therefore both cluster nodes are identically
configured. To avoid a single point of failure, we'd like to take
advantage of the active/active clustering when we call into the SQL
Server 2000 database and not have to specify the exact port of either
    instance.
Based on some information from a colleuge that is familiar with
accessing SQL Server from the MicroSoft environment, we should be able
to specify server=servername\instance:1434. This in turn would
determine the correct port for one of the instances and the driver
should handle forwarding our request to that instance.
Does the WebLogic driver handle this? If so, does anyone know the
proper syntax for the connection string?

Hi. Our driver will only connect to a DBMS by being given it's
machine name and port. If there are two DBMSes on the one machine,
then they will be distinguished (only) by different port numbers.
Our driver will not automatically switch from one port to another.

  • Best Practice for Host Named Site Collections and Web Apps

Looking for advice on setting up the host named site collections.  If I am reading many of the technet articles and blogs correctly I should 1) have only 1 top level web app for host named site collections and 2) not have a host header for that web
app.  If that's correct I am looking for advice.  We have 7 separate domains that we support in our farm.  Currently each of those domains is divided into web applications based on the domain,  *.contoso, *.trains.com, *.bakers.com, etc.
Is the concept now that all of the host named site collections fall under that one web app?  How do we deal with the SSL for each of those separate domains which all have their own certificates?
Thanks in advance for your comments.
    NLewis

Yes, for creating host named site collections, first you create a host header less web app and then create host named site collections under that web app. However this is only for the cases where all the host named site collections ends in one domain. So
you can create host named site collections as intranet.contoso.com, my.contoso.com, portal.contoso.com etc as they are all ending in *.contoso.com.
As per your environment, if you have web apps which caters to different domains like *.contoso.com, *.trains.com, *.bakers.com, you need to create separate web apps as they are all ending in different domains. Then you can have a separate wildcard SSL certificate
for each of those web apps.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks

  • File opening throws RBS exception after migrating to a new farm with sql 2012

We have successfully migrated the SP 2010 -sql 2008 r2 wss_content to a new sp2010 farm with sql 2012. The old and new farms are configured for RBS - FIlestream.
In the new farm when tried opening a document we see the below exceptions in event viewer. The documents open fine for admin users and fail for others. I have verified all the permissions on the blob store file location and it looks good. Users have no

Any suggestions on how to debug this would be great, do we need to rerun the .migrate() to realign any of the blob file references, we played around setting the max file size couple of times.

Migration - its a content db backup/restore/mount to new farm with sql 2012 from sql 2008 r2
Okie here are the results after we tried to narrow down the issue to few steps-
This issue happens on documents that are already existed in the content db prior to migration. we picked two docs from one library. DOC A and DOC B of close to same size..
DOC A - file size 64k, rbs max size set to 1mb.
Regular User and SPAdmin both can open fine, check out n check in successfully.
no entries made in event vwr of front end and DB server
DOC B - file size 64k, rbs max size set to 1mb
SPAdmin - can check out n open fine, but cannot check in back - file not available error
Regular User - cannot open the file - file not avialable at the url
Both users can view doc properties at lib level..
Errors found in event vwr of DB server -
"FILESTREAM file named with GUID '00311100-0000-51eb-f3a8-0b387bc5c5ce' that belongs to
FILESTREAM data file ID 0x10001 does not exist or cannot be opened."
    and
"The operating system returned the error '2(The system cannot find the file specified.)' while attempting 'FsDoHandler::CreateFile' on 'H:\Blob_Store\a06953ae-6f49-43b1-9c2d-fefb13bda9fe\1c581a4a-b450-4143-bc3d-8d419b49b0fb\0000eb20-000066ff-0002'
    at 'fstrman.cpp'(2075)."
I incline to believe that the references for documents in blob store could have been corrupted for some documents during the migration. Any new docs uploaded to content or to blob are all accessible fine.
I'm not sure running .migrate() will re align the blob file references? Any ideas on how to effectively get this resolved..

  • How to call a variable named "PI"

I have a typedef that contains a variable named "PI" like the constant 3.1416... but it's an acronym for "Program Information".... I can't rename it since it's a corporate typedef...
If I need to call it from an expression, TestStand takes it as the constant, but returns a syntax error due to variable notation... example "Step.Result.PI"
Is there a way to call it?
    Thanks
    Jim
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi,
This type def called PI, you dont say what is made of, lets say its just a string containing information about your program. To use it you would insert it as a Local, FileGlobal, Parameter or StationGlobal in your Sequence/SequenceFile/Station Globals.
eg Insert into Locals of MainSequence, Locals.my_pi (this is avariable of type PI) and you would enter some inital value.
    How this helps

  • SharePoint 2010 Kerberos on Load balance farm

I have a SharePoint Load balance farm and my site address is https://sharepoint.com(SharePoint alias creates in ADDS which resolves to virtual IP address VIP), do I need to setup spns for https://sharepoint.com or to all the ip adresses of the webservers
    used or to VIP?
    Thanks,
    D

    Hi,
you need to set up Kerberos for the URL your users are typing in the browser and for which you have IIS listening. In your case that is
https://sharepoint.com. This address will be registered with IIS on all load-balanced Servers and the application pool should run under the same service account on all servers.

  • Having thousands of Host-Named Site Collections - which authentication type?

So Microsoft seems to state the claims + Host-Named Site Collection (HNSC) approach is the way to go forward.
Assuming we have thousands of site collections, and we don't want to go with good ol' NTLM authentication as our claim authentication type, then how should we authenticate?
Both Kerberos and SAML would be a nightmare to manage, since for Kerberos we need to register a Service Principal Name (SPN) per HNSC. For SAML we would end up in a similar situation, since this would require us to configure a relying party
    + realm for every HNSC.

Please see the documentation on using managed paths with host named site collections.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc288637(v=office.14).aspx#section5
You would be very unlikely to have thousands of individual host names, I would never recommend such an architecture to a customer.  Instead, you are much more likely to use managed paths (/sites/, /personal/, etc) in combination with host names, significantly
reducing the number of individual host names while still allowing you to easily scale to thousands of site collections.
In Office 365, each tenant is provisioned with 3 top-level host names (<tenant>.sharepoint.com, <tenant>-public.sharepoint.com, and <tenant>-my.sharepoint.com), all subsequent site collections are provisioned using managed paths.
Note that this is not really a question particular to HNSC.  If you decide to not use host-named site collections but want to use individual host names using web applications, you get far less.  According to our Software Boundaries and
Limits document, you get maximum 20 web applications per farm with a maximum 5 AAMs per web application, yielding a maximum 100 individual host names.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262787.aspx
While you can achieve more host names using HNSC, I would strongly discourage this design and instead seek to leverage managed paths.

    Bye!

    gday WhiteSox --
You don't say how you are creating the new container -- is this standalone where you've extracted it to another directory and munged the ports, or in an OracleAS instalallation where you created a new instance?
What are you using to perform the deployment operation?
If you post some more details, we can try and help.
    cheers

  • Multiple Systems Pointing to One WFM Farm

I am attempting to hook a second SharePoint farm into my one Workflow Manager 1.0 farm. My first farm registered just fine. Now I am attempting to tell a second SharePoint farm to register and I get the following message:
Register-SPWorkflowService : An existing scope named "SharePoint" already
exists in the workflow server.  Use the -Force parameter to overwrite the
existing scope.  When using -Force, if another SharePoint farm was registered
using this scope, that farm may not be able to continue working with the
workflow server unless re-registered under another scope name.
    At line:1 char:1
If I overwrite the existing scope named "SharePoint", will that break the WFM connection from my first SharePoint farm?
Is it possible to have multiple SharePoint farms using just one Enterprise WFM Farm?
    Thanks

Thought I would answer this thread in case anybody else was looking.
