Nano Dead?

I have a Nano, refurb from the Apple Store, less than 8 months old. Today I got in the car and plugged it into the AC adapter/FM modulator unit. Nothing happened. The Nano wouldn't turn on, the screen was "black". It got VERY HOT and I could smell what seemed like burning plastic.
I tried to connect it to my Mac, but the same thing occurs. This thing gets EXTREMELY HOT!
Other than breaking the screen a few months back (sent to Tech Restore for overnight repair) this thing has been pretty trouble free.
My fear is that it's dead. I've already sunk $90 into the screen repair. Guess I'll use it as a paper weight?

I can get the unit to power up when it's connected to the AC adapter/FM modulator unit in the car. iPod turns on and is functional. However, there is a distinct, high pitched, electronic "buzzing" sound coming from the iPod. The upper right corner of the screen is so bright that it washes out all the image in that corner. The back of the iPod directly under the screen area is so hot that it will actually burn you to touch it.
Leaving the iPod on but unplugging it from the AC/FM unit the screen immediately goes black, image can still be seen, but the iPod "freezes."
I've attempted to connect the iPod to my Mac, but it doesn't show up in either iTunes or the OS.
About 3 months ago the iPod was dropped about 2 feet and the screen was broken. Sent it in to get it fixed and all seemed well until a few days ago.

  • 2nd Generation iPod Nano Dead?

My 2nd generation iPod Nano was working fine this morning. Played music as it did for all these years. Later this afternoon I turned it on and the display would not light up. No music played. Seems like the battery is totally drained. Plugged into USB wall charger (from Apple) and get no indication whethr or not this thing is charging. Same when I plugged into my Mac. Does not show up in iTunes or on the desktop.
Is my iPod Nano Dead? Has the battery bitten the dust and cannot be recharged again? It's a shame that none of these iPods have user replaceable batteries... Other than being dead I am quite sure that if I could put in a new battery it would work again. I don't like spending a lot of money for something that does not last me at least 10 years.

If the iPod's battery has been fully drained it can at least 30 minutes or more of charging for the iPod to show any signs of life and even after that a hard reset might be required. To reset the Nano, press and hold both the Select?Center and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.

    UPDATE.
Thank heavens for Macuser magazine from the UK, they had the 'how to' re the hard reset .
I thiught maybe a battery issue so I tried plugging the nano into my apple dock after the hard reset and BINGO!! came on and started charging and fired up .
To perform the hard re set on a first gen Nano you simply hold the top(menu) button and the middle (select)button and hold for about 5 seconds and there you go .
hope this helps any one searching for an issue with a dead Nano in the future
    kindest,becca

  • TS1425 Is my nano dead?

I have the 4th gen nano and none of the buttons are working. I tried the troubleshooting techniques that apple offered and they haven't worked. I have done the factory reset also. Is there anything else I could try?

    Sounds dead to me
You can take it to Apple and ask them to confirm that fact

  • IPOD Nano dead

I got an iPod Nano 2nd generation for Christmas with a Nike Sport kit, which I love.
However it can not connect and can not be used any more, and I'm not sure why.
    I've tried a reset, nothing.
When I connect it to the PC the PC beeps to say connecting, insert the disk that came with your USB DFU Drvice, which as you will know Apple stopped shipping CD's with Nano in September 2006, as it all comes with iTunes, which I have the latest version 7.0.2.16.
    I am running Windows Vista.
    What can I do?
Can I return it back to Apple, as I bought it from their site?
Can I call a suport line, cos I can't find one anywhere?
    Help me please?

THere has been issues arising fromt he vista operating system adn the latest version of itunes adn how they dont work properly. PLease go to th elink below and read the subsequent documnentation that is held in that link adn see if this adjusts your problem. Also know that apple has recognized this issue and has made mention of a fix for itunes/vista issues in a future release of itunes software.

  • Ipod Nano dead after 1 hour of first use

I am so sad - I got a nano this weekend for my birthday and after I charged it fully and began to try to use it, it completely DIED in less than an hour. I had successfully loaded about 60 songs onto it, and had only listened to 3 before this happened. All I see is the Apple logo, on a dark screen, in greyscale. Any attempt to manually reset or put into disc mode, or put into diagnostic mode is futile. My computer is no longer recognizing it, so I can't update or restore. This is my first experience with Apple and I was wondering if anyone else is having this exact same problem. I have requested service, and was also wondering how long it will take for me to get it (or a new one) back?

    Saira,
Sorry for all of your problemss. Apple products are great- and i have used them for a long time- but there will always be problems dealing with electronics. Couple of issuesi can think of:
    1. Some Windows USB ports can't fully charged, so make sure you plug it into the wall jack to charge.
    2. Make sure you have the latest Itunes for windows- they just released a new one the other day. 5.0.1
    3. Follow the instructions on the Nano help site
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/
It will give you helpful ways of trying to trouble shoot.
    4. Nothing else works: go to your nearst apple store and have them look at it. If there is not one near you, try to return it before the 14 day grace period is up. they will replace it for the same or another model. Be sure to keep your receipt.
    hope this helps,
    michael

  • Is my nano dead?

okay so i tried turning my ipod on and nothing happened... and it wasn't on lock. then i plugged it into my macbook pro and it didnt register or even show that it was plugged in, but the ipod is warm so i feel like its alive and doing something, but i dont know! is it dead? or does it still have a chance...

I jsut experienced the same thing. It just stopped working last night, and I bought about 6 months ago. Turned it off after properly disconnecting it from my MacBook and 20 minutes later, it wouldn't turn on.
It's not locked, it's fully charged, and it won't turn on.
    It's an iPod(red)/8G

  • 5th generation nano dead except for apple logo

My Nano wont do anything, when I charge it the apple logo appears but it still wont function. This is a replacement unit less than a year old but out of warranty.

I was told the original warranty wouldn't be extended.
I would take this up with the manager at the store where you purchased it from.  Doesn't sound right.  Do you still have your "replacement" receipt?

  • Nano dead from sweat

So it seems the Nano does not like sweat, even though it has exercising software on it, don't use it for exercise. Had my nano for 7 months and this is the 4th time it's screwed up, and the only response to fix it seems to be to fork out more money for a replacement (after already spending $170 for it with inflated Australian prices) or buy another one. I'm not going to wait for 2.5 weeks for a "genius" at the iTard Store to tell me to spend more money. Not happy . I have never liked Apple products,  I folded and bought the Nano. Big mistake.
Tip for young players, if you are looking for something that can withstand a bit of sweat during exercise, look for something else.

Tip for you: Any device that has an open area will be damaged by sweat (which is very corrosive) if it gets into the device. I've had several iPods that have survived marathons and didn't die. I just knew where to put it where sweat would get into the charging port. You can also get a plastic insert for the 30 pin iPods or a moisture resistant case. For the seventh generation you also have to block the headphone port if you are using Bluetooth.

  • ***HELP*** My nano wont turn on!

i pluged my nano into another pc 2 charge it up it didnt turn on or say its charging like it normally does i felt it get really hot so i i pluged it out now it wont turn on at all...........Is my nano dead?

See this: My iPod won't turn on.
If your nano gets hot, then it's an issue that requires service.
You can arrange online service here.
    Service request.
Or if an Apple store is near you, take it there and have them check your iPod.

  • Ipod nano battery dies in minutes

Today I took my Ipod off the USB connector and the battery was full. After just minute or two the battery was almost empty although I didn't even play music or anything. I tried just again, I charged the nano and took it off the USB and after a minute it was empty. Just couple of days ago it worked fine and the battery lasted for days.
What's going on? Is my nano dead in least than two years??

It is only bad to run your battery all the way down
if you then leave it discharged for a long time --
    many hours or days.
As I mentioned, details of all this are on my web
    site.
Thanks for the help. I were just on your web page and it seems that I've used the battery just the way you recommend. I never let it run completely or even near empty.
Now I've listened to couple of tunes and the battery usage seems to be quite normal. So I really hope that this was some temporary software bug or something.
BTW if it ends up that my battery is already dead I'll never buy another iPod. There's been so much disappointments with it. For example I bought it so early that I didn't know that you can't put it in your pocket like you have done with your mobile phone for ten years without getting a single scratch. But that an another thing

  • Soaked nano

My year-and-a-half-old nano was in my backpack (in what I naively assumed was a waterproof partition) and was totally soaked in a rainstorm early Friday morning. At that time, it was displaying an error message that I can't quite recall, about Firewire (?) and needing to be connected to the USB. I dried it off as best I could, and left it alone for 24 hours. This morning, pressing the button in the centre had no effect, so I plugged the USB charger into it. It's been plugged in for about two hours now, and it's still giving me the "Please wait - Very low battery" screen.
Am I totally out of luck here? Have I killed my nano dead?

Your Nano may already have been damaged by plugging it into a power source while still wet, however try putting it in a warm place and let it dry out naturally for about a week. Do not connect it to your computer or any other power source during that time. After that charge it up and you may, I stress may be fortunate enough to get it working again.
