Need to move files from G4 to my new laptop - HOW??

I am going to use my new laptop to mix DJ sets. Literally all of my music is already on my G4 in iTunes and as other aif files. How can I transfer the music files over to my new laptop - I don't want to have to input all the music again...that would literally take weeks as it is over 26 GB worth of files.
I know that you can hook the laptop up to the computer (by firewire I assume)and boot one up while starting up the other and holding down a certain key or combination of keys on either the laptop or computer. Then the laptop is like another drive from the G4 and you can copy files back and forth between the two. I need to do this.
Can anyone tell me the specifics of how to do this??

Note that migrating to an Intel Mac from a PowerPC Mac should be done carefully.
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate.  Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3 or G4 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
Screensavers written for the PowerPC
System Preference add-ons
All Unsanity Haxies
Browser and other plug-ins
Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior (does not work), TechTool Pro (pre-4.5.1 versions do not work), SuperDuper (newest release works), and Drive Genius (untested) may not work properly on Intel-Macs.  The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

  • New iMac - need to move files from Macbook Pro to new iMac

    Hi there everyone,
Did some quick searching, but didn't find the answer that I needed.
I am picking up my new 27" iMac (base model) and will need to move my files and programs from my Macbook Pro to the iMac. What is the best way to accomplish this? Are there any tools on the iMac that will help do that, or is it a manual effort?
    Thanks!
    Mark

When you first start new Mac it will ask you if you want to migrate. Say yes at that point and Setup Assistant will migrate everything for you.

  • Can we move Lightroom from PC to a new laptop?

Can we move Lightroom from PC to a new laptop?

It is unclear whether you’re asking about permission to put LR on a new computer, or more about the details of the process of moving things from one computer to the other.
As far as licensing and program installation, you are allowed as a single user to use LR on two different computers as long as you’re not using the two computers at the same time, so you can just download and install the latest update for whatever version you are using on your old computer to the new computer and input your serial number, again.   If you are transferring LR5 then there is no update, just install from the original media or download the Try version to the new computer and input the serial number.
You can also move your catalog database file and images over to a new computer, but the exact details of that depend on where the images and catalog are on the old computer compared to where you want them on your new computer.   Generally if you put them in the same relative locations then about all you’ll need to do is hook up the top-level folders with Locate Missing Folder command available from the right-click menu on each top-level folder   The process will be easier if you actually move all your folders under as few of top-level folders as possible from within LR on the old computer before moving things to the new computer.
If you’ve created custom presets and/or installed LR plug-ins those will need to be moved or re-installed on the new so take stock of where all these are before you start the move.

  • How do I quickly move files from old iMac to new one?

how do I quickly move files from old iMac to a new one?

How many files, and what total size?
To move ALL your files from an old Mac, you would use Migration Assistant, using either an Ethernet or Firewire connection. It's not quick, though.
To move just a few, you COULD put the old Mac into target mode (reboot it while holding T, and connect a Firewire cable, with Thunderbolt adaptor on the new end if need be). Or you could just copy them via an external (probably USB, for compatibility) drive or flash drive, formatted Mac Extended.

  • What do I need to migrate files from old eMac to new iMac?

I just purchased a new iMac and need to transfer information from my old eMac to the new one. I have not even taken the iMac out of the box, just read over the booklet.
What do I need to have to be prepared to migrate information from the start up application?  USB cable? Firewire cable? I just want to be prepared so I can get it done at one setting.  There isn't a lot of room on the desk for 2 Mac's for an extended period of time.

When you boot the new Mac, choose Migration Assistant to transfer all your data.

  • Move itunes from external HD to new laptop

I would like to copy my iTunes and iPhoto from my eMac to my new MBP. I have both on an external HD. Is it better to start with fresh install on the laptop and then to copy my iTunes -or -to transfer them using the migration assistant when I set up the laptop for the first time? I've never moved files from one computer to another so it's a bit daunting for me. Thanks to anyone if you can help.

If you value the meta data that you have accumulated- like playcounts- simply use the migration assistant. It works great.
You can also start the emac in target mode if you want, but then you have to know which files to drag over.
I assume that iTunes, and iPhoto, on the eMac, know about the files that are on the external drive. If this is the case, you won't have any problems.

  • What exact FW cable do I need to transfer files from PowerPC iMac to new iM

My husband bought a Belkin 9-pin to 4-pin 800/400 cable which is what guy at Apple Store sold him but it doesn't work.
Need to use PowerPC G5 as Target Disk Hard Drive to transfer files to new Intel iMAC & would appreciate someone telling me specifically what part on Apple Store website to order.
    Thanks,

You would need the 9-pin to 6-pin Firewire cable:

    Regards.
EDIT: the 9-pin to 9-pin Niel linked to would also work if you have the current or recent iMac that has a FW800 port.

  • Need to transfer files from iBook G4 To New Macbook Pro 13" HELP!

My iBook G4 has a firewire 400 port, whereas the Macbook Pro has an 800 port. I am about to order a cable so that I can transfer my files via migration assistant, but just want to double check here to see if it will work. (I am getting VERY confused about all this 6 pin 9 pin business!) Could someone please enlighten me? As far as i know FW 400 ports are 6 pin and 800 ones are 9 pin?
Anyway here is the cable i am considering buying:

I wouldn't use migration assistant from a PPC to an intel Mac. See here:

  • Old PC has Firefox on Windows XP, & new PC has Firefox on Windows 7; I want to move tabs from old PC to new PC--How?

My older PC has Firefox on it with Windows XP. My new PC also has Firefox with Windows 7. How do I transfer the information on all the tabs on the old PC to the new PC?

When you say "tabs" do you mean your Bookmarks?
    For best results:
    (1) On your old computer, export your bookmarks to an HTML file. This article describes the steps for Firefox 3.5-3.6: [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Exporting%20bookmarks%20to%20an%20HTML%20file#os=win&browser=fx35 Exporting bookmarks to an HTML file | How to | Firefox Help].
For Firefox 4-5, "Organize Bookmarks" changed to "Show All Bookmarks", and on the Firefox menu (orange button) you just click Bookmarks.
    (2) On your new computer, import that HTML file. This article describes the steps for Firefox 5 (note the item on the Bookmarks menu was renamed "Show All Bookmarks", and on the Firefox menu (orange button) you just click Bookmarks): [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Importing%20Bookmarks%20from%20an%20HTML%20File#os=win&browser=fx5 Importing Bookmarks from an HTML File | How to | Firefox Help].
    Does it work?

  • Transfer files from older mac to new laptop

Is the firewire on my powermac g5 compatible with a thunderbolt port on a new macbook air to transfer files?

Not directly. If you search online for thunderbolt firewire adapter you'll see mention of third party adapters being brought out sometime in the future.  Those won't let you use a Tb device over a Fw port but will let you attach a Fw device to a Tb port.

  • Unable to import movie files from iphoto '08 into imovie HD

I have recently bought a 2008 macbook (2.2 GHz) and have recently downloaded imovie HD in addition to owning iLife '08 due to its extra capabilities. I have found that I am unable to import any of my movie files from my iphoto library folder as it seems to need to open the actual iphoto application before the files can be accessed. In addition, when not using any specific program it would be nice to be able to access my photo/video files within the iphoto folder without iphoto automatically opening as the default viewer.
    Any ideas??!! Thanks.

.. and I import AVI video clips directly without converting to .dv, without problems.
lucky you.. .avi is just a container, no 'format'/codec .. I can show you dozends of .avis, which will NOT import into iMHD6, due to being playback-codecs, not convertable by the underlying Quicktime engine into separte, editable audio+video streams ..
.. If you convert to .dv, the size just blows up.
dv is 13GB/h and a codec meant for editing; e.g. it stores every frame (video=30 frams/sec) of a recording, as mpegs usually doesn't do so.. = your Mac has to estimate content, when converting and 'recovering' the content = lossy process.
iMHD6 is a dv-editor; the mpeg4 feature is only a toy, to spice up iSight recordings.. for sure, the QTengine can convert a lot, but too much conversion (from one lossy codec, e.g. divx, into another, e.g. mp4) means a (dramatic) loss of pic quality..
    my 5€ cents ..

  • I need to delete files from my iMac hard drive, but not from my other devices (that are sync. to iCloud). How do I do this?? My Mac is a 24-inch Mid 2007 running on Mountain Lion. Thanks for your help.

I have recently recieved messages indicating that my start up disc is almost full. Consequently I need to remove some files from my hard drive. I've backed up my hard drive onto a NAS system & onto an external harddrive. The problem now, is that whenever I try to delete a file, a message comes up saying that if I remove this file from my hard disc it will remove it from all my other devices that are syn. to it. How do I remove a file (movies) from my iMac but not from other devices.
    Thanks for your help
    Robert

You're right - this question has nothing to do with iSync!
You're best bet would be to buy yourself an external Firewire or USB 2.0 hard-disk. There's no way you'll get 150gb onto an 80gb drive - certainly not in an instantly accessible way.
Your new Mac would've had the Migration Assistant appear during the initial OS install. This allows you to connect your new and old Mac together via a Firewire cable and automatically transfer your important files from old Mac to new.
Once you've all the files off your old Mac, re-format it and re-install the OS that came with it. If you boot up the Mac from the OS install DVD, there is an option to re-format the HD and install the OS.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
That's the classic behaviour after using Migration Assistant and that's normal.
To transfer the data from the new user account to your old user account, you can follow some steps. Here is all the information you need to do this > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5472
