Need to Restore MBR

I was trying to install a modified version of XP using Boot Camp. After partitioning the drive, I couldn't get it to install. In an act of desperation, I followed some ill-advised "support" on another forum, and ended up manually deleting the Boot Camp partition as well as the smaller partition and trying to install it that way. It didn't work and Boot Camp couldn't erase the partition because I messed with it.
I booted up from my install disk and ran Disk Utility to bring my hard drive back to 1 partition and restored my data from my Time Machine backup. However, trying to use Boot Camp again, I still got "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition" error.
Also, I found there was no option to boot from my hard drive from the "Startup Disk" menu. Only Network Startup and the install disk (when it's inserted) are available as startup options. I can only boot from Macintosh HD after holding the option key at startup. I tried booting from my install disk and used Disk Utility to repair permissions and repair the disk. That didn't solve the problem.
After doing some research I figured out I might have a problem with my master boot record (mbr). Sure enough, after running rEFIt, a partition inspector, I received the following report (I have no idea what to do from here):
* Report for internal hard disk *

If I'm reading this correctly it says you have only one partition and it is a hfs+ partition.
That of course will be your Leo partition starting at sector 63.
Sector 1-63 is reserved for the 200MB EFI partition on intel macs.
if you restored your drive to one partition, then you will of course, have no multiple startup
option, simply because it is not needed, there is only one bootable partition.
You can verify this by typing this command at the terminal.app prompt:
diskutil list
Here is a sample output from my machine:
/dev/disk1
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: GUIDpartitionscheme *465.8 Gi disk1
1: EFI 200.0 Mi disk1s1
2: Apple_HFS Macintosh HD 151.1 Gi disk1s2
3: Apple_HFS Mac Data2 314.3 Gi disk1s3
/dev/disk2
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: GUIDpartitionscheme *232.9 Gi disk2
1: EFI 200.0 Mi disk2s1
2: Apple_HFS OSX 150.0 Gi disk2s4
3: Apple_HFS Leopard 50.4 Gi disk2s3
4: Microsoft Basic Data XP 32.0 Gi disk2s2
Please note that the EFI partition is always first. It holds data about the any MBR partitions that
exist and passes it on to apple's firmware. If no MBR partition exists it is in fact empty.
With the current GUID setup on Apple machines, there can only be one MBR partition. Of course
hfs+ file systems do not qualify and can never become the MBR partition. The MBR partition can
be fat12 or 16, fat32 or NTFS file systems.
You can in fact have multiple hfs+ partitions (data or bootable) on the same drive, but only one
partition may contain a bootable master boot record.
The MBR partition must be located as the last partition on the drive.
It can be multi boot with a boot manager such as refit or Microsoft's NTLDR.
When boot camp creates the Microsoft Basic File System it places a generic Master Boot Record
in the MBR partition as a placeholder. Windows creates its own boot record during installation.
The information linking the master boot record to the Apple firmware is written to the EFI partition
The Firmware retrieves the information used to boot MBR based operating systems from there.
You can manually create a bootable MBR partition with disk utility as long as you know the above
rules. It must be the last partition on the drive and must be formatted with the correct file system
by Disk Utility or a third party software such as ipartition (which allows an advanced user many
more options than Disk Utility). Whatever software is used to do the job, it must be capable of
creating the MBR partition, writing a placeholder MBR and correctly recording the information in
the EFI partition.
I hope this gives you the insight you need to properly prepare your windows installation.

  • 11.3 "Trying to restore MBR based image in to UEFI machine"

    Hey guys,
We recently upgraded to ZCM 11.3 from 11.2.4.
When we image our PC's we boot them from Boot CD's, we can then choose the automatic option and the imaging bundles on the server are applied to the PC's.
Since upgrading to 11.3, and now using the new bood cd's that came with it, when the PC's get to the blue imaging screen (where you would usually get the progress bar) instead they get a box pop up saying "Trying to restore MBR based image in to UEFI machine"
If I try the manual option and try to upload an image I get "Trying to make MBR based image from UEFI machine"
If I use an older boot CD I can upload and restore images fine, but I can't use the imaging bundles because it tells me I need a newer version of the software.
I have tried the normal boot CD and the bootcd_tntfs.iso (after uploading the latest tux driver)
This was all working fine before 11.3. does anyone have any idea how I can get round this (its a pain having to manually put the addon images on.)
    Thanks
    Dave

If you roll using Lagacy Only, you but down a normally MBR image,

  • P35 Neo2 - OS died, need help restoring RAID after re-install of XP

I have a P35 Neo2 with on-board Intel RAID.  I need a bit of help getting a two drive RAID going again after reinstalling XP.
    Here's my situation:
Same hardware, MB, etc. I originally set up the system with a 20gb IDE and two 320gb SATA drives. I put the OS on the 20gb, and set the two 320's up as a RAID. I partitioned the 320's into 200gb + 120gb sections on each drive. The 200gb partitions were mirrored between the two drives, and the remaining 120gb on each drive was used as non-RAID storage space.
I picked up a nasty virus-spyware a month or two ago that I was struggling to find a fix for when the OS began to BSOD. I put the 20gb IDE to the side, and put a 40gb IDE in it's place. I re-installed XP on it last night, and now need to get the RAID up and running again.
I went into Disk Management and it showed three dynamic drives with a yellow triangle icon and labeled 'foreign'. I right clicked and found an option to 'import'. I clicked on import and a window popped up showing all of the partitions and logical drives I had previously created on the two drive RAID. I figured I was in business, so I clicked OK.
Disk Management now shows one dynamic disk as 'Online', but still shows two as 'Foreign'. If I right click on them, and chose import, I get the same window showing my partitions and logical drives, but if I click OK, I get a warning message that: "Some of the volumes you are importing will lose data because you have not moved all of your disks to the system."
I'm in over my head at this point, so any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    GeoD

A 200gb partition is restored, but the 120gb is not, which is confusing. ALso, when I look at the logical drives in the partition, I'm beginning to think I had the 200gb mirror /120 gb storage backwards. The data restored is not something I would be concerned with losing. It's installed applications, and multimedia files that I could lose without worry.
There is also 70gb dynamic drive labeled Missing.  I know I left a small portion of all three of the drives unallocated as a reserve, so that must be what this is. It's like the RAID info is incomplete which leads me to the next piece of info.
Something I didn't initially mention for the sake of brevity, was when I right-clicked on 'Import Disk' the applet noted the disk was 3/3. I assumed that meant disk 3 of 3 disks. I've since begun to wonder if I imported the disks in the wrong order. ie) I should have imported disk 1/3 first.
Do you know how to clear out Disk Mgt's info, so I can start over?
I also noticed only one of the 320 SATA's shows up in Device Mgr, (DM). What I found both confused me and encouraged me.
When I created the array, I named the the drives RAID0 and RAID1. They both show up in DM. But only one of them shows up as the drive model: WDC WD3201ABYS-01B9A0. There should be two of them.
The OS knows there should be a RAID, but for some reason only one of the drives show up as hardware.  I rebooted and checked the data and power supply cables, (connected), the BIOS, (both drives show up) and both drives show up in Disk Mgt.  Just not in DM.
Does that mean the HD has died?
Part of my difficulty is I had a brain injury in 2001, followed by another in 2003. The 2nd injury caused 6 months of what the docs call it a walking coma - I walked and talked, but have no memory of the time.
When I 'woke up' in the Fall of 2003, I found I had lost considerable cognitive function and other problems.  These problem have ended up disabling me, (I'm now on SS Disability).
Until then I had been a 'System Admin' for micro-businesses, (max - 15 computers). I built systems and servers, installed networks, maintained them and did all the support. Basically I was these company's Sys Admin on an as-needed basis.
One thing I lost was the ability to troubleshoot and repair hardware. Combined with other cognitive problems, I was forced into closing my business. At the time, I was maintaining close to fifty offices; ~20 had Peer-to-Peer networks & ~20 had servers I had built.
What's doubly frustrating is I was just getting ready to sign up with an online backup service when I got hit with a nasty malware/virus that's so new there's no info on the 'net about it. I got entangled in trying to fix it and spaced out the online back up. Now I find myself in a situation where I desperately need to restore the data on these RAID drives.  Because of the memory problems I now have, I completely depend on my computer as an auxiliary 'brain' - I have stuff on these drives that I have to have.
I didn't do much with RAID when I was still in the biz, and this is the first time I've had problems with a RAID of my own, so I'm struggling to figure this stuff out.
Should I be able to install one of these drives by itself so I can get the data from it? The way I understand the theory of RAID is that if one drive dies, you can put another in and the mirrored portion will re-create itself on the new drive.  Couldn't that be a way to get the important data off the drive or drives if they don't want to go back together as a RAID?
I could back each up to the online service and then just rebuild them.  Not my first choice, but it would reduce my stress level if I thought I could do it.
Sorry to go on, but now you can see why I'm both struggling & worried.
Thanks for any info or help.

Randomly when I plug my Iphone 4s into Itunes it will tell me that it can't detect my phone and that I need to restore it. It doesn't happen every time, but maybe every two weeks.I restore it and then it works for a while, but then a couple weeks later I'll plug it in and I get the same message again. It's very frustrating because even though I have all the settings to save to cloud, my apps and data don't all come back.

Thank you both. I suppose I should have prefaced my question with the concern that I've read a number of other posts from people who have had a similar issue and when they tried to follow the directions, they ran into a multitude of other problems. As you might imagine, I'm hoping to avoid the creation of new problems as I try to solve this one. Thanks again.

  • How can I recover music from my ipod when its in 'need to restore' mode?

basically, my friends ipod is a old ipod classic and has about 7,000 songs on it and most of them are backed up in the ipod hard drive (like going to the ipod on my computer and organising the files there)
about 2 weeks ago certain songs would crash and the ipod wouls have to be restarted by holding menu + pause then not listen to that song, after a while of this it makes a loud clicking noise whenever it was turned on and all i see is the apple logo for about 5 minutes then it comes up with 'connect to itunes to restore',
once i manage to connect it to a laptop (it has always been annoying to connect) i restarts itself a couple of times, then shows ' connect to power screen ' and at this point the laptop hasnt recognised the ipod yet on itunes and my computer after reconnecting it a few times it will connect and start charging, itunes says that the ipod needs restoring and i cannot open it in my computer as it says i need to insert a disc and also the ipod screen doesnt have the red 'do not disconnect' symbol the screen is black and white and the symbols are a bit smaller and it looks like a disc mode or something? sorry i do not know what to refer to it as
the problem is i need to restore my ipod to help fix it and access my thousnads of files as many of the songs i could not find again, but i cannot get into any of files anyway
i was wondering if there are any ways i will be able to recover my files before i restore it as i have tried some recovery programs but my ipod never shows up on them but if a restore and update was necessary to recover files
by the way my friend borrows my laptop to put music on her ipod which she then deletes from my files afterwards and the ipod has been switched through different computers which the songs have been deleted from anyway
any advice would be greatly appreciated thank you!!!!!

I need to restore an passcode locked CMDA iPhone 4 to 7.0.6 not the current 7.1. This is due to a mobile management application that our company uses that has not been verified to work with 7.1 yet. This iPhone is current on 5.1.0. I am trying to do the restore via iTunes and am using an old ipsw file for 7.0.6 but I keep getting the 3194 error when it tries to restore. I have tried all the "hosts" fil e suggestions but keep getting the same result. Is it no longer possible to restore an iPhone to an older version of iOS, even only one upgrade back??

Sorry, but it will only install the latest version (7.1).

    Hello, Taylorlocke.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Here are a couple helpful troubleshooting articles that I would recommend going through.  They will walk you through troubleshooting this issue.
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen. Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane. Learn more aboutrestoring iOS software.

When you reset to factory settings, you erased all content and settings.  That restored it to factory settings except that it kept the latest iOS update.
The person who loaned it to you can connect it to iTunes on their computer.  They will be given the option to restore from their backup.

When in recovery mode you can't backup the iPod.
You will have to restore via iTunes. See:
    iTunes: Restoring iOS software
    To restore from backup see:
    iOS: How to back up
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
