Netgear router & iChat AV-Need Help!

Can anybody help me with my router settings so I don't get an error message with iChat AV? Texting is fine. Not sure what to change in the router or in Apples's sharing dialog box.

Stan...
Same router here. Video used to work fine, until January 15th. Then it went kerplooey. Video kept working for some, not for others. The 'Error -8' nightmare. But, lo and behold, the Apple auto-testers were all still A-OK.
I abandoned video chatting on iChat four months ago when frustration took over, because no available online solution would work. Ports (Forwarded or Triggered), the UPnP option, Firewalls on or off. Out of the box usage...? Yeah, right.
I still see that Error -8 is as popular as ever in this forum.
If you find a solution, please, PLEASE let me know.
Thanks.
It's a WGR614v5. I went to
http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/ContactTesters.h
tml and it worked with the test site.
I can't get it to connect with my cousin's MacBook
Pro.
I'm not sure I have correct setting in Sharing prefs
or in the Netgear setup.
Thanks

  • I am at a total loss. I received am airport express to replace a netgear router. I need a step by step list of how to get it working. I am not very technical

I am trying to get an airport express to work, it is replacing a netgear router. Tried following the directions that came with it plus suggestions sent to me  but so  far I am not able to get things going. Can anyone send me a step by step list from start to finish and also explain what numbers, passwords etc that I would have to install. I am the stupid in the KISS method of doing things

    Hi doctorshane
Your router is the heart of your network. Replacing one changes everything.
    Please follow Philly_Phan's instructions here:
My airport express won't stop flashing amber and I can't figure out how to hock it up.ihad a router which worked fine
To which I would add: disconnect your modem from power and let it rest a moment while you configure your Express. Make it a habit to do this whenever you change the device connected to a cable or DSL modem. Most modems will refuse to communicate with anything new, until its memory has been reset with a power cycle.
If you still have difficulty please explain where you are getting stuck. If you reply in that thread, not this one, it would help others with your problem. Don't begin a new question unless the recommendations you receive are getting nowhere or your question doesn't get any replies after a day or so. Philly_Phan's instructions are correct so follow them.
Otherwise, you are likely to repeatedly receive the same advice and will fail to achieve any progress.

  • Belkin Router Firewall Settings - Need Help Please

    Hi
I'm new to Apple and love the machine, but I am having a problem with the firewall on my router. Let me explain the setup, then the problem...
I have the following in my home network:
1 hp desktop running Windows XP Media Center Edition, SP3 (Professional)
1 Belkin wired / wireless router
1 Canon Pixma MP500 Printer set for Sharing (Connected to hp desktop through USB)
1 iMac 20" running Leopard OS
The hp desktop and the iMac are both hardwired to the router. The router's security settings are as follows:
    Will NOT broadcast the SSID
Mac Filtering is ENABLED (iMac MAC address is included in list of allowed connections)
    WPA-PSK Security ENABLED
Wireless connectivity is ENABLED (For Wii, PSP, and Xbox 360)
    Now the problem...
Everything on the network works beautifully, except the iMac. It will not allow iChat services, will not allow sharing of the desktop with other iChat members. It does, however, connect to the internet, but will not access the hp shared folders or printer. When I attempt to even add the printer, the printer does not even show up. I DO have Bonjour installed on the hp, but when I run Bonjour, I get a message that reads something like, "There are no Bonjour enabled printers available."
I know it is the firewall built into the Belkin router because I placed the iMac into the Demilitarized Zone, and everything started working as expected. For those of you not familiar with DMZ on the router, it basically allows you to pick an IP address to place outside of the firewall, so you can keep the router firewall enabled, but you can choose an IP address (i.e., a computer) that is not behind the firewall.
After placing the iMac in the DMZ, I went to add the shared printer on iMac. Not only did it show up immediately and give me the ability to add it and print to it, but I could also browse shared folders on my hp. I was also able to connect to a friend on iChat, and we were able to share each other's desktops.
Before placing the iMac in the DMZ, I opened a couple of ports (I don't recall which ones at the moment), and I was able to get iChat AV to work properly, but could not get the shared desktop feature to work. I believe if I had a comprehensive list of ports to enable, I could get this issue resolved, but I can't seem to find such a list anywhere on Apple's web site (or any other web site for that matter). Do any of you have such a list of ports??
I can provide more information if needed, but any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot in advance for your help.

    Thank you, Larry.
I found a soft copy of the Belkin router's setup instructions on-line. I am going to enable the UPnP feature, as the manual indicates that it is necessary to have this feature enabled to do the things I want to do. The manual also indicates that the router ships with this feature disabled by default. I have not had a need to enable the feature when I had two PCs, so hopefully this will solve the problem.
In either case, thanks for directing me to the common ports. If enabling the UPnP feature does not work, at least I can see which ports I need to enable.

  • WRT54G Wireless Router Problem. Need Help!

I'll start with the basics of my situation and if more details are needed, I will provide to the best of my ability.
I have a comcast cable internet connection.  I have 6 computers in my house. Two of them are downstairs (which is where our modem is.) The other four computers are upstairs.  All of these computers are Desktop computers with the exception of one laptop.
My laptop (which is Windows XP) can pick up a random wireless signal from the room it is in.  I also found out a way to share the internet connection on the computer by going into the properties of my network connection and enabling internet sharing on it.  This means if I connect a network cable from my laptop to another computer, I can leech the connection from my laptop and have internet access on the other computer.  I also  had a switch that I used to connect the other 3 computers upstairs by means of the laptop.  The problem was, the laptop was using someone else's wireless connection in the area, and it wasn't strong enough to keep up a constant connection.
I decided, if I can leech someone else's wireless connection, why not have my own.  So i recently bought WRT54G Wireless Router and set it up on one of the computers downstairs (because that's where the modem is).  It works fine as far as connecting my laptop to the internet from upstairs.  My laptop can access the internet through the connection I set up in the LELA program.
Here is the part I am confused about.  Everything is plugged in correctly as far as the router is concerned because the laptop can access the internet.  But when I connect an ethernet cable directly to one of my other computers (which are Windows Vista, but I didn' t have a problem with it previously when I was leeching someone else's connection), the connection drops on my laptop, and the other computer still can't access the internet.  A notice pops up that says its trying to identify the network, but it gives an error that says there is something wrong with the DNS.  As soon as I disconnect the ethernet cable connecting my laptop to one of the other computers, the connection is fine again on the laptop.  It's only when I connect the computers together that the connection drops.
I just don't understand why it wouldn't work when I created my own network if it worked with another network with no problem.  My whole point in getting a wireless router was to have a router within good range to keep up a constant connection on my other computers that aren't in range of the modem downstairs.  I just don't know where else to look.  I'm not sure if it can be fixed on LELA, manually through my wireless settings, or if it could be a problem with one of my computers' settings.  I've tried many different things and I'm not sure what else to do so any help is most definately appreciated.  I feel like I've tried everything.  I know it's possible because I've one it before, I just need the help because I'm not much of a networking person and I don't know what I should start with to make this work.
Thank you to anyone who can help or even point me in the right direction.

Access router setup page ...Click on the Wireless tab on the Setup page- Here Wireless Network mode should be mixed- Provide any non-linksys name .... Set wireless channel to 11- And wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on "Save Settings" >>Now Click on the Sub tab under wireless > "Wireless Security" Change the Wireless security mode to WEP/WPA ...type in the key & click save settings .... >>>>Click on Advanced Wireless settings>>Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304 Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings" Check the connection once again & see if it works or not ...

Yeah that's what I thought... How (means what are you setting)?
Can you clarify? do you mean my voltages,  NB-CPU setting, and CPU multi? if so, let me give you the settings for a 3.60GHz OC run
    1.Cool n quit is disabled
    2. C1E is disabled
    3.CPU FSb is 240
    4.CPU multi is 15x
5.CPU-NB ratio is set at auto which is 10x and it's currently at 2400 Mhz
    4.turbo is disabled
5.unlock CPU is disabled Advance CC is disabled
6.CPU core control is set to auto
    7.OC genie lite is disabled
8.FBS/DRAM is 1:3:33 to prevent overclocking above 1600 Mhz
9.HT link is set to auto which is 10X (I know some people say to keep this below NB clocks, but results are the same no matter if i set it lower or not)
10.all voltages are set to auto (I have messed around with them in the past to no prevail, but i'm just giving you an example)
Also, i'm not trying to start an argument and get help at the same time, but the reason why I said BIOS in response to your question is because, a lot of people use a switch or a software to overclock, when you asked "how" I thought you meant the method. So... sorry.

  • Webcam chat? using iChat? need help

Ok, so I have recently bought the new MacBook Pro with the built in webcam. My girlfriend finally decided to buy a webcam, MiniCam Pro Jasco something? but she runs off Windows XP. To get right to the point: What is the best way for us to connect so that we can see each other through the webcams? I've set up my AOL IM account and so does she and I click on her camera thing next to her name but after a few seconds, a message reads:
Failed to start video chat because: (my name) did not respond.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I set up a gmail account and we can chat but no cam, i tried Skype and we were able to hear each other but are we supposed to be able to see each other too? I also downloaded msn messenger windows live program and we are able to talk but there is no webcam option under our names like there is for windows users. I've been trying to figure anything out for the last 7 hours and i can't figure anything out! I'm new to this Mac stuff so maybe i'm doing something wrong. please reply or email me at [email protected]
    thanks, Jared

I need to connect an Airport Express to an exisitng Wi-Fi Netgear Router. 1) My PC do not detect the Airport Express, 2) AE is flashing amber all the time... Please if someone can help?

Before I bought it I did the same question at the Apple Store, and they told me "You can extend your existing Wi-Fi Signal with Airport Express wireless...
You cannot extend wireless from any brand except another apple router.. the store might have assumed you were using an apple main router. Most people who buy express buy them to extend an extreme or time capsule.
You are correct .. in the setup documents it does say 5.6.1 is adequate to do the setup.. my bad.. !!

  • Need help replacing a Netgear router with my old used wrt54g from another house.

I had a WRT54G at my old house that was working great. Now the renters moved out and I got the router back. I have been having some issues with the netgear router Im using now so I would like to replace it with the Linksys. How do I do this? Do I need to hit the reset button? What do I set the settings at and how do I set up security so others can't access my network.

    Whoaw! Take it easy Ragnar....
It is easy to setup the router with your existing network. I'd like to know your ISP. In a way, you can have the router set up manually according to your ISP settings, whether it is cable or DSL.
For setting up the wireless to be secured, you can check this link.

  • 2 router help.. computer guy needs help

Hey everyone.. trying to isolate wireless on my network.
router one netgear setup as dhcp and ppoe to my dsl modem. would like to keep the wired network first on the netgear.
router 2 linksys wireless is plugged from netgear port into linksys wan .. would like to use this isolated from the 0.1 sub that netgear is putting out. so i have connected using 1.1 sub and it gets its ip and can ping from the routers internal ping test although the pcs cannont. it works if in gateway mode although i dont want the users to be able to ping my netgear network so i put in router mode to isolate . problem is that the pc cant get out.. tried some static routing with no avail and i think possible the double nat is causing troubles. i need to have dhcp on the wireless so i can get this icafe working and keep users of the network. i dont want to use the ap isolation in the adavanced tab because i think i shouldnt have to and should be able to get these beeachess (that bitches for u wonder) working like i have the plugged.. if you test u'll notice that the if in gateway mode the two networks can see each other  (tell me why and i will kiss u- although must be some double nat or gatewaycrap ) ok thats the speel... which one of ya thinks that he can help.
i am leaving them in gateway over the weekend but if someone stumbles this they might get on the local network and figure how much i a charging them to get this to work
    thanks

Yes, you are on the right track. As stated in the included instruction manual, you will need to charge your iPod for four hours or until the display changes so that it shows a power plug (meaning that it is fully charged).
Also note that while your iPod is charging, you can also add songs and videos to it.

  • Do i need to uninstall netgear router program if switching to new router?

Do i need to uninstall netgear router program if I want to install a new router program?

no, in fact, it's better to update it instead of installing the new one separately so that you don't loose your bookmarks and such.
To update, open firefox and go to Help and chose About Firefox. you should see an update button there.

  • Still need help with iChat

    Hello
I have tried everything sugested in these posts to get iChat to work through my wireless router Dlink DI-524. I have even contacted apple care (waste of time as far as I am concerned)
I have filled out the folowing and pasted it here with as much info as I could answer.
Please take a look at the following and let me know if there is something I am missing to get this D* program working.
There are lots of things you can do to help the regular posters in this Discussion area help you.
First of all the current Discussions were designed on a One Person/Problem to one Thread basis. This was to try and stop several people jumping on what looked like a similar problem and the thread ending up with 5 or more different answer to what in fact were different problems.
Now linked to this is the need to have all the info you have in one go, up front so that we can answer as succinctly and as quickly as we can without repeating questions over and over to get to a start point.
As a Start go here and enter your computer and OS details so they appear on every Post you make.
After that you need to list these things:
    1) Have you done the Quicktime Streaming setting ?
Go to System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab. In the drop down set the speed to match your download or to a max of 1.5meg
    YES
    2) Are you running your Mac with the Firewall On ?
    NO
If so have you set up ports for iChat ?
    3) Did you upgrade from Panther ? NO
Do any of these things effect you ?
If they did and you have done them please state so.
    4) How are you connected to the internet ? THROUGH WIRELESS
    a) We need to know device make and Model ?
    DLINK DI-524 ROUTER
    b) We need how you have opened the ports for iChat ?
    * UPnP ? ENABLED
    * Port Forwarding BUMP – Thought you only need to use this if firewall is on
    * Port Triggering BUMP
    * DMZ BUMP
    c) We need to know if you know if the device is in Bridge Mode ? BUMP
(sends your Public IP through to your computer or router).
    d) Do you have a router as well ?
    * Is it doing DHCP ? Do you only set this up if using built in Ethernet?
    * Is it an Airport device ? YES
    * Have you opened the ports there ? BUMP
    * By which method ? (see above list) NOT SURE
    5) Do you have any iChat Add-Ons ? NO
    List them if you have.
Also state if you downloaded them when you were running Panther and if you have updated them.
    1. iChatUSBCam
    2. iGlasses
    3. Showmacster
    4. ChatFX
    6) Does anything in this FAQ effect you and the Add-ons in addition to 5) ? NO. At least I don’t think so.
    7) Does it have anything to do with connecting to a PC ? NO

    Hi Kaisoboy,
This page has the instructions on how to access your device and pics to help and
It does not show UPnP in the menu.
It could be that you have newer firmware than the pics.
    However it should still help.
DO NOT set the ports shown as they are wrong.
Set the ones I gave you.

  • Help required please! Netgear router to Airport Express to stream iTunes

I have recently purchased an Airport Express and I have an iTunes account.
I wish to stream music from a computer in one room to a Sony Hi fi in another room (not very far apart). I am having great difficulty in setting this up with instructions in the box.
I have a NETGEAR wireless router provided free by Virgin when they put my broadband cable in. So I need simple step by step instructions on how to link the Netgear router on my computer with the Airport down on my hi-fi. I have the cable to the hi-fi plugged into the Airport and the router is working okay.
I have spent hours on this and have also had a computer expert try to help me but he has drawn a blank. When I click on Airport Utilities the message comes up saying that it has not detected a wireless device. Scan Again! Can anybody help?

initiate the set up using ethernet then configure the Express wireless setting. Y=As the second router you may need to put it in bridge mode. Use Airport Utility to do that.

  • IChat AV not working when connecting wirelessly thru Netgear router

Ok, I have read nearly EVERY forum out there about this issue, and I have tried nearly everything. I even called Apple. Noone can seem to figure out what the deal is.
I have a Netgear WGR614 v5, and it is connected to a modem that I got from RoadRunner (Time Warner Cable).
My cousin, who has a Mac identical to mine, is set up in the same fashion with a Netgear router.
Neither of us can get a video connection using iChat. When we click the Accept button, it says "Connecting to ...." and then we both get an error that basically says there was a "communication error".
I was informed of an Apple test address that I could test it with. AIM username is appleu3test03. I added it to my iChat buddy list, and clicked on the camera icon, and voila! It connected and I get an iPhone video (which is what is supposed to happen)
So, what EXACTLY is that supposed to tell me???? The Apple test site says that means there is no problem with my connection, but that the issue is on my end somewhere....but I don't understand how that can be.
Anyway, I don't have ANY firewalls on, and it works when I am connected directly with an Ethernet cable.
    PLEASE!!! HELP!!
    Thanks
    Cynthia

    Hi arvideo,
OK IS the UPnP on in this device ?
And no Port Forwarding or Services set ?
IS it the only device connected to the internet ? (is there another router or a modem ?)
