Network Interface selection

Hello,
I'd like to use specific network interfaces for different applications. For example using always wi-fi for skype, only one browser on a specified VPN and so on...
I thought to do it using ipfw, but it seems it is not possible to set rules on the base of process ID.
Is there any tool allowing to do such a thing? Any other suggestion would be well accepted!
Thanks in advance

I am not aware of any tool that can accomplish exactly what you ask. The command line tool "route" can setup protocol-based routes. You could have skype go to one interface and http go through another. But I don't know of any way to make it application-specific.

  • Ix4-300d network interface going off-line

    I just got a new ix4-300d to use as an iSCSI target in a relatively low-performance requirement file server.
    I have used ix4-200d and ix4-300d in the past for iSCSI targets in disk-based backup scenarios wihtout issues.
    I am having problems with this one, though. I am attempting to copy data to this new unit (with a VHD mounted from the iSCSI connection to the system), and while data seems to copy OK, at some point the network interface quits working somehow.
    When this occurs, the unit still thinks that the interface is configured, and everything seems OK, I just cannot connect. Obviously, this causes my iSCSI initiators to die, and the VM hosted crashes hard. At that point, I have to restart the storage unit, and then reconnect my initiators, and then bring everything back online.
    I've updated the firmware to the latest, but it wasn't that far out of date. I've found an article titled "Network storage device is not assigned an IP address" in the knowledgebase that points ot a problem with the software in the 4.0.2 series, and I was at 4.0.6, and am now current in 4.0.8. I am testing the process again, but wanted to check with the community to see if anyone has experienced anything similar and/or could offer some idea of why this interface quits working.
    For what it's worth, the other units I have worked with were all in the 3.x series of software.
    Thanks for any help/information anyone can provide.
    Solved!

    Hi chloeroxymax,
    Do you have discovery enabled?
    If not, check the box for "Enable discovery with iSNS" under the iSCSI settings and select "Use local iSNS server".
    Then, on your iSCSI Initiator, go to the Discovery tab. Click "Add Server" under iSNS servers and enter the IP address of the NAS.
    The device should show up under the Targets tab (you may have to click the refresh button)
    On your other NAS devices, go to the iSCSI settings page and select "Enable discovery with iSNS" but select "Use external iSNS server" and type in the IP address of the ix4-300d NAS.
    This may help things run smoothly. If the device is still disconnecting, I would recommend contacting technical support since this is a new device and you are covered by the warranty for support.

  • Changing a Network Interface in DAG Replication Network after going P2V

    I have a DAG member suffering severe hardware failure so I have gone P2V with it.  It's functioning fine, except that the DAG Network Interfaces have changed - The MAPI Interface was on "Local Area Network" on the physical server, and is now
    on Local Area Connection 7 on the VM.   However, the DAG settings still point to "Local Area Network" and will not let me change it.  Same thing for the replication network.
    I have lost redundancy due to this, so I need to get it repaired pretty promptly.
    Removing and re-adding the subnet in the DAG network has no effect - it still references the old physical NIC instead of the new virtual NIC, despite the new virtual NIC having the same IP as the old physical NIC.

    Try to change the network binding on the server
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc732472(WS.10).aspx
    Try to delete the hidden network adapters as well.
    Open Device Manager, from the File menu, expand the View and select the Show Hidden Devices option. This will enable and show any old un-used devices in the window
    http://www.gfi.com/blog/how-to-remove-hidden-network-adapters-from-virtual-machines/

  • Smf / sometimes does not configure network interfaces in single-user mode?

    From http://groups.yahoo.com/group/solarisx86/message/14785
    When booting into single user mode, I often get a message
    on the console
    t_optmgmt: System error: Cannot assign requested addressand only the loopback interface is configured (lo0 inet, and lo0 inet6).
    The system's dnet0 interface is not plumbed any more. Configuration
    for the dnet0 network interface is via a static ip address; hostname
    in /etc/hostname.dnet0, and and ip v4 address for that hostname in
    /etc/hosts. This was a Solaris 10 x86 system, but the same problem
    has also been observed on Solaris 10 sparc, and the hme0
    interface.
    svcs -x in single-user mode reports no problems.
    Changing to multi-user mode by typing Ctrl-D still does not
    configure the real network interface.
    One thing that I've noticed is that smf's log file
    /etc/svc/volatile/network-physical:default.log
    is missing, when the nic interface was not configured.
    It seems that the problem with unconfigured network interfaces
    does not happen when I boot directly into multi-user mode.
    Why isn't the physical interface plumbed and configured when
    booting into single user mode on S10 b69?

  • How to detect ipaddresses of other systems in a given network Interface ??

    Guys ... I know only the Network Interface and I want to know the IPAddresses that have been assigned to the other systems on that Network Interface .. I m making an application on packet sniffing..
    I want to show the list of hosts on a given Network Interface or device when a User selects one..

    I know this is kinda easy .. but plz help me out..

    And plz .. its pretty clear what i want to do .. just help me out instead of finding mistakes in terms ....Help...
    Unless you are the owner of that network then I suggest that you get permission in writing (pen and ink rather than email) before doing whatever it is that you want (unless you use the windows API).
    People have been fired, expelled and had civil/criminal legal proceedings against them for network scanning even when they thought they had permission.

  • What are these new network interfaces?

    Recently I've noticed a few additions to the standard net interfaces (are they called interfaces or adapters?).
    Tertiary (en2)
    Quaternary (en3)
    IP over Firewire (fw0)
    IP over Firewire (fw1)

    I'm not quite sure, but I believe the BSD network interfaces are en0, en1, etc.
    Airport, Ethernet, Bluetooth, Firewire, etc. are Network Services. Network Utility's Info tab and the Network System Prefs should say the same thing.
    What do you see if you open System Profiler and click on the Network>Locations? ie What do you get for the names of each of the Services? Again, they should match Network prefs/Network Utility Info.
    To remove a network service, go to Network System Preferences; Select a network Service, and click the delete ( - ) button.
    I don't think anybody has made it clear, yet, that those are not normal. I don't believe they were created by the OS. However, it could be corruption in the plist that is giving everything fits.

  • Ghost network interfaces installed

    Some failed installation process have managed to setup > 1000 "Local Area Connections" on  my Windows 7 64-bit installation.
    These do not show using device manager, devcon or other Windows tools. Even if I display hidden ones.
    The only way I can list them is to use the GetIFTable function from the Windows iphlpapi library. When I list the devides, the output is typical like this for one of the > 1000 interfaces:
    Index[484]:      499
    InterfaceName[484]: \DEVICE\TCPIP_{D8911FFA-82B2-4A3D-83B2-D97EC9740F9E}
    Description[484]:
    Type[484]:       Other
    Mtu[484]:                0
    Speed[484]:      0
    Physical Addr:
    Admin Status[484]:       2
    Oper Status[484]:        Non Operational
    I have tried to remove these by searching for the ID in the name (D8911FFA-82B2-4A3D-83B2-D97EC9740F9E) in registry.
    I find typically this entry matching the above ID:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Network\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\{D8911FFA-82B2-4A3D-83B2-D97EC9740F9E}]

    "DefaultNameResourceId"=dword:00000709
    "DefaultNameIndex"=dword:000001f4
    "Name"="Local Area Connection* 500"
    I delete all the registry value/keys matching D8911FFA-82B2-4A3D-83B2-D97EC9740F9E in registry. After I have deleted all, I do a search and find no entries matching this.
    My thought is that this interface should now be gone. I do another registry search to ensure that there are nothing matching D8911FFA-82B2-4A3D-83B2-D97EC9740F9E in registry.
    BUT the problem is that the interface is still there when I run GetIFTable - with the same ID. Even if I reboot the computer it is there.
    Where is this interface defined? If it is not in registry - where can I find it to delete it? I've done a search for file name and file content with the ID but can not find any match - except in some old log file (setupapi.app), where the device was first

    Any ideas? I would like to delete these non-working interfaces. They slow down the computer on certain software using GetIFTable function.

    Good news : the problem seems to be solved. Less good news (for those who encounter the same problem)...I am not sure how I did it :S
    I don't remember doing anything special between when I wrote the previous post and now, except that at some point, I went into Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center -> Change Adapter Settings. Then I right-clicked the adapter "Microsoft Virtual
    WiFi Miniport Adapter" and selected "Disable".
    I did this because I saw in another forum, that this would prevent it from creating more 6to4 Adapters. However, right after doing it, I checked and the ISATAP Adapters were still here. It was only some moments later, I was checking the network interface
    properties again with a test program using GetIfTable2, when I noticed the ISATAP adapters had disappeared. And even after a reboot, they haven't come back, and my programs now start in a reasonable time. So, the problem seems to be solved for me.
    So, to anyone encountering this problem, maybe you could try disabling the Virtual WiFi Miniport, and then reboot or wait like 1 hour. If that doesn't work...then I don't know :S

  • Dual network interface when joining multicast group

    Hello,
    I've have a machine with two networks interfaces, eth0 and eth1. The route table is configured to send all the multicast traffic through eth1.
    This is
    route add -net 224.0.0.0 netmask 240.0.0.0 dev eth1
    I have the following code that joins to a multicast address to listen incoming messages in my Java application
    InetAddress group = InetAddress.getByName(multiCastAddress);
    socket = new MulticastSocket(Integer.parseInt(multiCastPort));
    socket.joinGroup(group);
    The result is that the application can not see the multicast traffic since the joinGroup operation is always done on eth0, guess because JVM selects the first one available.
    If I change the route entry to use eth0 for all the multicast traffic, the same code works perfectly, and from my Java application I can see the multicast traffic.
    This is
    route add -net 224.0.0.0 netmask 240.0.0.0 dev eth0
    Is there any way to force to join a specific network interface?
    Thanks

    The answer is staring you in the face in the Javadoc:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/java/net/MulticastSocket.html#joinGroup(java.net.SocketAddress,%20java.net.NetworkInterface)
    That bug report only concerns setNetworkInterface(), which the OP isn't using, on Linux and IPv6, and it's dated 2002.

  • DHCP server admin - no network interfaces to choose from

    When I first installed OSX server I was able to create a DHCP subnet range and my clients are still connecting to the server and working fine. Now if I go to edit my subnet range, nothing shows up under subnets. Also, if I attempt to add a subnet, the selection menu for Network Interface shows no interfaces. Both en0 and en1 are working properly otherwise. Any thoughts?

    In Network Preferences -> Show: Network Port Configurations, are the network ports ticked?

  • Western Digital My Book World Edition network interface

    I just brought a WD My Book World Edition Network Interface 500GB storage system.It is NTFS type and come along with installation diskette for Miscosoft Windorw but not for 10.5. After installed the harddisk on Window and check the iMac. It find the harddisk in shared drive but no harddisk mounted on the desktop. I can view the harddisk but I find difficult to control it.
    Is there anyway to make make the harddisk mounted as harddisk on iMac desktop? I am trying to set up a FTP protocol. Please advice.

    I've just purchased a 1TB My Book World Edition and went through the installation process on a Windows machine. I can see the PUBLIC connection from >Go>Network.
    I can't log on selecting the SMB/CIFS shared volume because I don't know how to Authenticate it. I have made an account or passwork for this? Or have I? Or is there a factory default?
    I've installed and I'm running WD Anywhere Backup successfully. So I have almost all the functionality I wanted except.
    I want to use Time Capsule. Presently, the 12" PowerBook is the only Leopard machine on the network, the MacBook Pro is still Tiger because I run ProTools and don't want to upgrade until the beta upgrade is stable.
    When I try and use the Shared Storage Manager via http://192.168.2.9 because, again, I do not know the username and password.
    I do want to use the ability to be able to access this drive remotely, via the internet, so do I have to make a VPN? Is so, do I have to purchase a product such a DigiTunnel or VPN Tracker? Which one do you recommend?
    Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have.

  • Unable to receive multicast on a multi network interface host

    Can anyone please help?
    I am not able to receive multicast on a multi network interface host.
    This is the code:
    public class LegacyMulticast {
    public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException {
    InetSocketAddress group = new InetSocketAddress("224.10.20.30", 12345);
    NetworkInterface iface = NetworkInterface.getByName("eth3");
    MulticastSocket socket = new MulticastSocket();
    socket.setSoTimeout(5000);
    socket.joinGroup(group , iface);
    byte[] b = new byte[4096];
    DatagramPacket datagram = new DatagramPacket(b, b.length);
    try {
    socket.receive(datagram);
    System.out.println("Success");
    catch (SocketTimeoutException ste) {
    System.out.println("Failure");
    socket.leaveGroup(group, iface);
    The funny thing is that when I start this code, Wireshark detects IGMP join on the correct network interface caused by joinGroup call, followed by constant UDP traffic on correct port which I aim to receive and finally I see correct IGMP leave caused by leaveGroup call and the UDP traffic stops.
    I just don't receive anything on socket.receive call.
    I am trying to figure this one out for days now. Pls help someone :)
    P.S. I suspected security, but System.getSecurityManager() call returns null.
    P.P.S. I also tried implementing this with NIO, but with same result.

    public class LegacyMulticast {
    public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException {
    InetSocketAddress group = new InetSocketAddress("224.10.20.30", 12345);
    NetworkInterface iface = NetworkInterface.getByName("eth3");
    MulticastSocket socket = new MulticastSocket(12345);
    socket.setSoTimeout(5000);
    socket.joinGroup(group , iface);
    byte[] b = new byte[4096];
    DatagramPacket datagram = new DatagramPacket(b, b.length);
    try {
    socket.receive(datagram);
    System.out.println("Success");
    catch (SocketTimeoutException ste) {
    System.out.println("Failure");
    socket.leaveGroup(group, iface);
    This is still not working.
    The multicast is coming from the network (not localhost), OS is Windows 7.
    When I start a multicast stream localy via VLC application on this same group and port, I receive the traffic in this Java application OK.
    Once again, Wireshark detects IGMP join and leave and multicast traffic flow on eth3 network interface initiated by the Java application, but it just doesn't see the UDP datagrams.

  • Asus eee PC 1005HA No network interfaces

    Hi everyone.
    I am pretty new to Linux, but I have played with Arch, amongst other distros, in VirtualBox before. Today I got a nice shiny new eee PC 1005HA. I always intended to install Linux on it, and while I know that Arch isn't usually considered the best bet for someone without a great deal of Linux experience, I like The Arch Way™ etc etc.
    Now, I had done a basic check to see if anyone else was using the 1005HA on these forums, and they had and said that everything was working. I guess I was tired, because if I had done a search for "1005HA" I would see a couple of threads with people having issues with the network interfaces.
    As far as I can tell, for most people the wireless works fine with very little effort needed on the user's part. However, for me neither wireless nor ethernet works. ifconfig -a lists only lo, which isn't very helpful. lspci | grep -i net listed two things, but in the end I had to use google to look up what specific model was in my computer (Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285)
    I have reinstalled a couple of times, making sure to include things like wireless-tools, and I am using the Core USB image. I have tried using the ath5k and ath9k drivers (at least I think I have—maybe I am doing it hopelessly wrong) and neither gave any results.
    I would like to get Arch working if possible, although if not I will try Ubuntu and then finally Windows.
    Thanks for any help you wonderful people can give.

    There's actually a pkgbuild in the AUR for the wired kernel module.
    http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/ather … d-1005-ha/
    You can download the source and pkgbuild to a thumbdrive, and build them using makepkg on your machine.
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Makepkg
    This is preferably since it will be tracked by the package manager as well.

    All I want to do is mount external hard drives that don't have Thunderbolt ports to my iMac, via Thunderbolt because I am using the iMac's single Firewire port for something else. The drives do successfully mount, but why do I keep getting this message whenever I connect them again?

    I have no doubt what you say to do would get rid of the message for me. However, both myself and an Apple Store employee think it is odd that the message comes up in the first place. We're both curious about it, and he's going to look into it.
    We tested it on a computer at the store, and found that it happens on Lion too.

  • [SOLVED]Linux 3.10.6 fails to detect network interfaces, input devices

    I upgraded my ASUS laptop to Linux 3.10.6 and I can no longer use my mouse or keyboard in a desktop environment. A USB mouse faired no better. The keyboard works in console mode. I've done a couple reboots and a good deal of searching online, but no one seems to have the same problem. My first inclination was that udev was no longer running, but a quick "ps -aux | grep udev" revealed that systemd-udevd was running, but not udev itself. Is it safe to start it manually? My network interfaces have also disappeared, BTW, and the font size in console mode has also changed (size has increased, font is fuzzier). Any ideas?
    EDIT: I do have the loopback interface.
    lsmod shows:
    ext4
    crc16
    mbcache
    jbd2
    hid_multitouch
    hid_generic
    usbhid
    hid
    sd_mod
    ahci
    libahci
    libata
    ehci_pci
    scsi_mod
    ehic_hcd
    xhci_hcd
    usbcore
    usb_common

    Does your running kernel match what pacman has installed?  Do uname -r and compare that against the version of pacman -Q linux.  If they are different, reboot.

  • HP LaserJet P1505n stops printing and blocks network interface

    I have been using my P1505n for over two years without any problem. But it suddenly stopped printing. The scenario is as follows:
    1. The P1505n is connected to a wired home network with reserved IP address in the DHCP server.
    2. The P1505n is used from Ubuntu 10.4, 11.4 , Windows XP and Windows 7 without any previous problems.
    3. The last partial successful print job stopped in the middle of a page leaving the rest blank: no paper jam.
    4. I have reset the printer several times: turn off + press Cancel & Go + turn on while holding the two buttons down.
    5. The first reset was successful: the toner level going from 40 to 100%. The next ones may have been successfull too.
    6. After each reset and also after each power-on, I can ping and access the embedded web server.
    7. Whenever I send a print job, the print queue on the computer (all OS behave identically) says "printing" and stops. I can cancel/remove the jobs from Ubuntu.
    8. After the printer receives the print job, it silently blocks the network interface (no ping nor web) and doesn't print anything. No movementsm no LED blinking either: just nothing happens.
    What is the reason for this problem? And how do I solve it?

    Hi firedude007,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
    I see that your HP Laserjet P1102w stops printing files from your Mac but not on Windows, and I am happy to help!
    For further assistance, I will need to know the following information:
    The version number of the Mac Operating System. To find the exact version, visit this link. Whatsmyos.
    If the printer is connected, Wireless, or USB.
    If the printer is able to make copies by itself.
    In the meantime, I would try the following:
    Reset the printing system. Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system.
    Verify and repair disk permissions. Disk Utility 12.x: Repair disk permissions.
    Hope to hear from you, and thank you for posting!
