Network shares not showing up in finder osx Lion

The shares on my network are not showing after I tried this SMBup. I tried to follow this guide but things didn't turn up as I was expecting them to work.http://knowledgebase.hsti.com/re-installing-smb-on-mac-os-x-lion-10-7-x
This is the official website where in the middle of the page there is a note stating that "SMBUp installs Samba, which in turn replaces Apple’s OS X’s native netbios and SMB services. This means that while connecting to servers from the Finder remains functional, the Finder won’t be able to “browse” network services and servers from the network won’t show up in the Finder’s sidebar. Be advised."http://eduo.info/apps/smbup
So i uninstall the samba restart the machine and now my shares don't show in the left side pane of finder. How can I get them back. Is the netbios service disabled

Open Terminal and issue the following command
ps aux | grep netbios[d]
if you get a line similar to this
_netbios          45   0,0  0,0  2477156   2456   ??  SNs   9:14am   0:02.44 /usr/sbin/netbiosd
then the daemon is running, otherwise issue the following command to start netbiosd permanently
sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.netbiosd.plist

  • Network shares not showing up in finder

This one has me stumped. I have a 3 computer set up, macbook 10.5.8, imac 10.6.6 and a macbook pro 10.5.8. From both the macbook and iMac I am able to see all other machines on the network and connect with no problem. On the pro I cannot see any of the other machines on the network. I can connect to them using command K and typing in that information, but under shared in the finder it doesn't list anything. I've poured through everything I can think of and every machine is identical in setup. Same workgroup, same firewall setup, same share set up, same everything. Can't figure this one out. I've also had issues with the pro disappearing from the other machine's shared section after time has gone by with no activity. The pro is not in a sleep state at these times and even if I go back to the machine and get it fully running again the connection is lost until I do a restart. FYI all of the machines are in the same vicinity and connecting to the same router so I don't think connectivity is an issue. I don't know if it's related because I haven't had this problem in about 2 weeks and I think I figured it out but the pro was having connection problems a few weeks ago every so often. When I would turn it on it would self assign an ip address. I tracked that problem down to a router security issue and believe I have fixed it but thought I would include that information. Before I figured out how to fix the problem a short term fix was to take the file from Library/Preferences/System Configuration and trash it and then do a restart. The system would rebuild the file and the issue would be taken care of temporarily. Don't think this has anything to do with my current problem either but thought I would include it just in case. What did I miss?

Open Terminal and issue the following command
    ps aux | grep netbios[d]
if you get a line similar to this

  • Windows Shares Not Showing Up In Finder (Master Browser Problem)

Hi, on leopard I had no problems with Windows shares showing up in finder. However, having upgraded to Snow Leopard, I've now lost that ability.
Before I had my Leopard computer set as the master browser. I did this by specifying domain master = yes and preferred master = yes in my smb.conf. However despite importing these settings into Snow Leopard's smb.conf, it is not acting as a master browser.
When I run the command "nmblookup -M -- -" which in Leopard returned my Mac as the master browser, now it says "failed to find name _MSBROWSE_#01".
I'm sure this is why the Windows PC is not showing up in finder, but I don't know why the smb-conf isn't taking effect in Snow Leopard, and setting it as the master browser?
Also, I can use Go -> Connect to access my Windows shares, and Mac shares show up in Vista okay.
    Any help appreciated.

Problem fixed upon updating to 10.6.2.

  • In Nautilus, mounted network shares not showing up right away

I've noticed a strange problem recently (last couple of weeks) where my mounted network shares don't always show up right away in Nautilus (side bar or desktop- like they used to). For example, if I manually mount an NFS share in CL to /media/files it won't pop up in Nautilus right away like it used to. It will only show up after several minutes or if I plug in a thumb drive to trigger it to refresh. Also, when my computer is in suspend and I resume it, all predefined network share mounts in fstab that are indeed mounted won't be present in Nautilus upon resuming from suspend (they did before).
I'm not sure where the problem lies as Nautilus or dbus haven't been upgraded in the repositories recently. I tried looking at recently updated packages but I can't pin it on one that would be causing the problem. I'd like to get an idea of what packages are affected before submitting a bug report. If anyone has any idea on the package I can downgrade no problem and test this further.

Figured out the last filesystem upgrade from Decemeber is causing this. Bug posted- FS#27851.

  • Why is a network share not showing up in time machine settings when on the wifi?

    Hi all,
I am currently trying to set up time machine for my Macbook air. I have connected an external harddrive to the network router and made it available as a network share. I have both read and write access to the drive, when mounted as a an SMB volume and while connect to the network via Wifi. However, when opening time machine settings and trying to select the backup volume, the network drive doesn't show up.
    What's wrong?
    Kind regards,
    Martin

Time Machine cannot backup to a SMB network volume.
Time Machine may also have problems backing up to AFP volumes on some network attached storage devices (NAS).

  • Network Shares stopped showing up in Finder

    Hello,
My MBP has been working perfectly for over a year. Two or three days ogo it looks like the computer stopped seeing all network shares. Almost like nothing that should be seen with Bonjour is showing up. Printers, Time machine backup server (QNAP NAS), itunes libraries on other machines, etc. I can get to things by using their IP address so the network seems to be fine.
The firewall is completely turned off on the Mac and all the computers are connected over a single switch.
I tried deleting systempreferences and reinstalling the last combo update but neither solution worked. Running the latest version of Snow Leopard with all the latest updates.
The windows machines are having no trouble seeing each others iTunes libraries. When I start up iTunes on the windows boxes they briefly see the Mac iTunes library although it disappears from iTunes home sharing if i try to access it.
    Would appreciate any help.
    Thanks,
    Chris

Completed a Time Machine backup to the last restore point which was before the issue and everything is looking good so far. I will install the latest updates and see if I can narrow down this issue if it happens again.
TimeMachine is awesome. Super easy to restore my machine although it did take 3 hrs.

  • Network shares not showing in the sidebar

Since ugrading our clients Macs to Lion, any network shares that are managed using workgroup manager are no longer showing up in the users sidebar, and if I try to drag the share to the sidebar it stays for a second then disappears ( the sidebar preferences are set to show the shares)
But if I eject the share and re-connect then it does appear in the sidebar as expected, and ideas how to make it show up on first connection without having to disconnect and reconnect?

Thanks, I did delete the file several times, restating after each attempt. I also tried from guest and other user account - exact same.
Curiously,... the 'shared" and connected devices have started to randomly reappear. I know there are devices connected all the time. So I dont know whats going on.
    Bring back SL.

  • Shared devices not showing up in finder

Shared devices on my network are not showing up in Finder on my MacBook Air. Problem just began in the last 24 hours, and is limited to just this computer. Have done usual things -- checking, unchecking shared devices in Finder; relaunching Finder; restarting computer. Any ideas?

Your problem is very common under Snow. At first my shares did not show up under shared in finder windows. I, then, of course, used "Connect to Server" to connect to the shares--both Mac and PC. I found that the more I kept the shares active the more likely they were show up under shared. Then, I discovered that if I kept the computers from sleeping during the period of needed access they would tend to stay in shared without nearly so much keeping the connections active.
If you do not like the above work around, then there are two other possibilities. You can elect to show mounted items on your desktop. Do that and connect to each share. Then, go > users > unlock > + login options > try dragging the mounted shares to the login item window. If successful, then the shares should be available at login.
Another approach is to mount and connect as indicated above. Then, making an alias to the share should at least make things faster.

  • Windows Vista Computer not showing up in finder

Hi, my WIndows Vista computer is not showing up in finder under Shared. I can connect to my PC from my mac by clicking on finder, go, connect to server and typing in the PC's IP Address, Username and Password. I can also see my Mac computer from my PC running Windows Vista.
What's weird is that it was showing up for awhile but I recently changed my network key and unchecked file sharing on both my Mac and PC.
Afterwards I re-enabled file sharing on both my mac and Vista computer but my PC won't show up in finder.
I can connect to my PC and see the computer in finder but when I click eject, it disappears. I would like it to remain in finder. Is there some setting that I need to enable? Please help

Assuming that the missing machine is part of the same Workgroup/Domain:
Open Terminal and enter "nmblookup -M workgroupname" (without the quotes, and replacing workgroupname with the name of your workgroup or domain.
This will list the IP address of the machine that is the "master browser" of your network. If you are on a domain, the address should be that of your domain controller. There should only be one ip address listed.
You can then get that machine to list the shares that it see on the network by entering:
    "smbclient -L ipaddressofmasterbrowser"
You should be able to just press enter when it asks for a password.
This will list available shares and servers.

    Rodney

  • Windows partition not showing up in finder OR disk utility

doesn't snow leopard have ntfs support out of the box? Well I have windows 7 x64 installed via bootcamp, yet the windows partition will not show up in finder. I checked in disk utility and there is my macintosh HD, and a greyed out partition named disk0s4. It's 120gb, same size as the windows partion, but it says that it is FAT, which I know is not right. I even went so far as to to reformat the whole drive and reinstall both windows 7 and os x, and I am 100% sure it is a NTFS drive, even though it still will not mount in osx and it still says it's FAT in disk utility. What is going on??

Go to Finder > Preferences > General
Make sure External disks is selected.
Restart your Mac then connect the external drive.

  • Adding shared printers? Network printer not showing up in list

I have a network printer not showing up in the Bonjour Printer Wizard. There is not a place to add a printer to this list. Does my network printer need to be installed under the Windows side as well, or can I share it using Bonjour? I'm confused as to how the shared printer program works. Also, my Adobe "print to pdf" option shows up as a printer, but how do I change the file destination location? It doesn't give me an option to change the "saved to" location. I am using these printers through Parallels in AutoCad, and that should be the only reason I will need to share printers. But I am in AutoCad a good deal of time, so I need to know how to quickly print my drawings.

    Welcome to the forums!
You don't say if you installed after downloading the Printer you deleted, but I suspect it's one not showing, and that you need to reinstall.

  • External Hard Drive does not show up in Finder

My external hard drive is not showing up in Finder.
It shows up in Disc Utility, but I do not have access to it. I have tried the following:
    command-shift c, nothing happens
confirmed in Preferences/General that external hard drive was checked
    tried another cable
tried another port on the back of the external drive
tried to connect through the USB port
    re-started, etc.

I have same problem after installing OS 10.5.8. Disk utility sees the hard drive, the computer does not. Disk utility says invalid node structure. Volume check failed. Filesystem verify or repair failed.
That means the directory is corrupt. If you have a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app, such as +Disk Warrior,+ it may be able to fix it. Otherwise, your only option is to erase and reformat the disk. They're not cheap -- Disk Warrior is about $100. And for Leopard, you need version 4.1.1 or 4.2.
I have not been able to figure out how to start a new topic here, but did find this discussion, which fits me fairly close.

  • Blank DVD and CD not showing up in Finder or anywhere

My blank dvd and cd are not showing up in Finder. I checked my preference and deleted from my library com.apple.finder.plist. All to no avail. I have the new upgraded Lion.

Do other blank discs appear normally?
Do other commercially manufactured discs (software, movies) show up normally?
Those questions are to help narrow down exactly what the problem is.

Honestly i don't think those are going to make much difference for this problem. Go ahead and do them, but they're usually last resort desparation solutions, not first resort.
