Network,Sound,Video issues -NEW to solaris

Ok, i think before i ask my questions that i need to get something straight, i don't know a single thing about unix based systems, not one. Unfortunately i am (till i get this figured out) a windows server guy who is trying to get away from microsoft products, and i've never been on solaris or linux at all, so i don't know ANYTHING about commands, so if your explanation is a series of commands, please type them out for me clearly. Thanks in advance for understanding this.
Now, on to the problems...
Problem 1:
I have a Dell Latitude 110L Notebook with Solaris10 installed on it as part of a dual boot install i did. I cannot figure out how to create a connection to my router (for the internet) using my lan slot, i'd like to stay wireless, but since Solaris isn't made to accomodate laptops, i'm guessing that's out of the question. But either way, i still cannot connect using the lan port, and i cannot figure out how to do this with the network settings options.
Problem 2:
On this same laptop i get an error telling me that a sound device isn't found, i did some poking around and recieved another message telling me that AUDIOCTL wasn't found, then, after looking myself, noticed that it wasn't there.
Problem 3:
I have taken down my Server 2003 system and installed solaris on it to see if maybe it would work better on a desktop, like it was intended to be ;) , and everything went fine... till i tried logging in. The screen goes nuts, with lots of verticle distortion waves, but you can almost make out the desktop stuff. I think that i should mention that i'm using a Sony Trinitron 22" CRT monitor.
I would really like to use Solaris on my laptop, at least long enough to configure a website, so i can at least create a "Site under construction" page, that way when i'm ready to permanently replace Server2003 with Solaris my website members will know that the site will be back up soon enough, and that way i will already know the basics before taking my LIVE site down.... Like i just now did.
Any help is apreciated, and thanks in advance for your time.

Hello
1) The Latitude D410 uses a "bge" network card (I saw that in the Solaris HCL). I do not know if the 110L uses the same type of network card.
Try the following commands (as root):
ifconfig bge plumb
ifconfig bge0 plumb
ifconfig bge1 plumb
ifconfig bge5 plumb
If you only get error messages your card has not been detected or is not a bge network card.
You should do a "prtconf -v" (will print a lot of data about the devices in your system) and post this data to this forum (because it contains information about the network card). Maybe you'll have to patch the /etc/driver_aliases file.
2) The D410 uses a sound card that requires patching the /etc/driver_aliases file:
The HCL says:
Add this line to /etc/driver_aliases:
audio810 "pci8086,266e"
Then run this command to load the audio driver:
devfsadm -i audio810
Maybe another PCI ID is used in the 110L - the output "prtconf -v" will show this, too.
3) On your desktop: On the log-in screen you had a graphical log-in window or did you log in on a text screen?

  • Problem logging off windows 7 on AD domain - Sound Card issue New model iMac 2011

I am looking for help for a strange problem we have on our new 21.5inch iMac computers (mid-2011 model), Our whole IT team have worked for a week to find solutions and we have exhausted all of our ideas. Please note we have an identical setup on our old mid-2010 model iMacs, which experience NONE of the same problems, windows logon and log offs are quick and painless. We have conducted side by side identical tests, so this forces us to assume it is a hardware/driver issue.
Basically our iMacs have BootCamp installed with Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 is our default operating system. We have joined these computers to our Active Directory Domain and the users are all roaming with redirected folders.
The issue is the following: When a domain user logs off, it can take up to 25 minutes for the User Profile Session to finally log off and return to the normal Ctrl-Alt-Del menu, the next user who logs on usually is just left hanging and with no ability to logon. After a hard-restart the system logs on normally, but then can experience same problems at logoff.
We see the issue when the user watches lots of Flash Player videos on a browser such as Firefox and Chrome, although we've seen the same problem when other applications are used on the computer such as Windows Live Movie Maker.
So far we have found only one solution: If we disable the Cirrus Logic Audio Driver CS4206A (AB 9), and High Definition Audio Driver from the Sound, Video and Game Controllers within Device Manager and restart the computer, the system behaves normally, logon and log off times are a few seconds. But naturally we have no sound which is unacceptable.
We have tried everything we can think of including: Fresh installs of both OS, full updates of OS's, Firmware and Software, Manually updating sound drivers, changing users and AD Domains and attempts to force stop all services on logout etc.
We would appreciate any and all help to get to the bottom of this, including advice on what to try next.

Just wanted to feedback on this and say our solution was the following:
Download and installed Universal Driver Pack within Win 7 , which included a AMD High Definition Audio Driver and replaced the High Definition Audio Driver Installed.
I have also informed Apple and Microsoft of this issue, hopefully someone will take some notice and update the driver.

  • Has Apple addressed poor sound quality issues with new 160GB iPod classic?

I just bought a new 160GB iPod classic, replacing a perfectly good 80GB iPod Video (5.5), thinking that the newer one would be superior to my 3 year old model. I discovered that the sound of the new unit was flat and muddy compared to the older model. I found that the 5th gen iPod video was more "spacial", if that's an appropriate word to use; the bass was more present and more clearly defined, as was the rest of the sonic spectrum. I searched several forums to research this issue and while there were numerous references to this issue, all of the posts I found referred to the original iPod classics (80GB and 160GB) and not the later 120GB classics nor the new 160GB classics like the one I bought. Has Apple done anything to address this issue since the first classics were released or are the new ones still suffering from the same sound quality issues as the original classics?

Based on your observations here, they apparently have not changed the sound quality since the original 160GB classic. I noticed a clear narrowing of the sound stage (ambiance) between the 5.5G 80Gb and my 6G 160GB. You're describing the same characteristic. I don't own the newest 160GB version and came here today to see if it might have improved the sound quality back to the 5.5 spaciousness. Note that the 5.5G has a higher signal to noise ratio than the 6G, making it difficult for me to enjoy it through efficient balanced armature in ear monitors like the Shure SE530s or Ulimate Ears Triple.Fi 10s.

  • New to Solaris, Some Samba and NTFS issues.

Hi Im new to solaris and trying out ZFS which has been great.
Im haivng some trouble that I cant find up to date info on so here goes:
First how do you mount an NTFS volume in Solaris 11 Express?
I need to access the data on an NTFS drive to populate my new ZFS tank.
Secondly, I have read only access on my samba shares from windows machines but my smb.conf looks right. a copy of my smb.conf will follow
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    # This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
    # smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
    # here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options (perhaps too
    # many!) most of which are not shown in this example
    # For a step to step guide on installing, configuring and using samba,
    # read the Samba-HOWTO-Collection. This may be obtained from:
    # Many working examples of smb.conf files can be found in the
    # Samba-Guide which is generated daily and can be downloaded from:
    # Any line which starts with a ; (semi-colon) or a # (hash)
    # is a comment and is ignored. In this example we will use a #
    # for commentry and a ; for parts of the config file that you
    # may wish to enable
    # NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command "testparm"
    # to check that you have not made any basic syntactic errors.

  • New to Solaris administration - Need some help with some issues

    Hello all,
I am a new to Solaris administration and need some assistance with a few things. I was going to make separate posts but decided it would be easy to keep track of in one. I really do not know much about the OS but I do have a little Linux background so that might help me out. I am going to number my problems to keep them sorted, so here we go.
    The machine:
    Sunfire V880
    4x 73GB HDs
PCI dual fiber channel host adapter
    Attached RAID array:
Sun StorEdge T3 Array with 9x 73GB HDs
Sun DDS4 Tape Drive in a Unipack
    OS: Solaris 5.10
Updates: Updated everything except 2 patches (Updating is a real pain isn't it? At least it seems that way to me.)
    1. So I might as well start with the update issues! These 2 updates will not install:
    -PostgreSQL 8.2 source code, (137004-02)
Utility used to install the update failed with exit code {0}.
-Patch for mediaLib in solaris, (121620-03)
Install of update failed. Utility used to install the update is not able to save files. Utility used to install the update failed with exit code 4.
No idea why the PostgreSQL update is not working, but the medialib patch seems to not have enough hard drive space.
    2. Where are all the drives? I don't know how to find the RAID box or the other 3 internal hard drives. When I installed the OS, I think I installed it on only one hard drive and that might be part of the reason why the medialibe update above says that I don't have enough space.
    3. I probably need more space for the OS and updates, is there a way to "add" space onto the hard drive that currently is running the OS?
    3. Once I see the other hard drives I wish to combine them to make a RAID 0 and RAID 5 array, how do I go about doing that?
    4. How can I find/see the tape drive?
    5. Does my swap space really need to be 64GB? I know the book I have read suggests it, but I only made it 5GB because it didn't seem to make sense to make it 64GB.
Thank you in advance for the help. I know these are a lot of questions to ask but please go easy on me :)

Exit code 0 means there were no errors. When you run showrev -p 137004-02, does your system show that the patch is installed? You can check the log for a particular patch add attempt in /var/sadm/patch/+patch_num_rev+1- A bunch of stuff shows up, here is a portion (I am not entirely sure what it means, there must be a least a page of stuff like this):

When you run format command, how many drives are listed? Identify your root drive (compare with output of df command you ran earlier) Please post here.2. Output of df-hk, looks like I ran out of room. Should I just go ahead and reinstall the OS?

  • No Sound after installing new video c

    Hello folks.
I'm having a problem with the sound not working on my system. Basically I was having problems with visual corruption on-screen when playing OpenGL games like Call of Duty. I replaced my power supply and my video card, which has fixed the visual problem. However, the new video card has apparently taken some of the system's resources away from the sound.
    Here's some hardware information:
Sound Blaster Li've! Platinum Edition sound
    SOYO KT400 Dragon Ultra motherboard
ATI Radeon x700 Pro 256 MB video (the new card)
When I go into Device Manager I get this error: "This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 2). If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system." My motherboard has onboard sound, C-Media, which I have disabled in BIOS. The video card is plugged in essentially the same way as the previous one was. I have tried reinstalling the sound via Device Manager to no avail. I have noticed that on separate attempts, the sound devices were listed differently. The first time they were all listed in a tree: 4 SB Li've! WDM, then 4 of the Gameport. They were all sandwiched within one another. The second time around they were all 8 listed as separate devices.
I'm at work at the moment so I'm sorry I can't provide further details. Can anyone help me with this situation? I would very much appreciate your help. Thank you.Message Edited by vendetta4 on 06-0-2005 06:42 PM

first, in the hardware manager delete all unplugged video cards, audio cards and monitors (cleanup purpose). to display them, go to display->display hidden devices.
provide us a capture of the extended device manager, and your complete list of hardware.

  • New iMac 07 horrible video issues in Magic Garageband

I have a 2.0GHz iMac (Mid 2007) with the ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT 128MB graphics, when I click on magic garageband the video has interlaced lines and the colors are horribly distorted. When I click on "audition" then "change genre" it quickly adjusted back to normal than quickly went to its interlaced look. I am going to try to reinstall GB from my DVD. I am also having unrelated video issues in Doom 3 even after the universal updater patch, the video resolution is terrible and I am getting artifacts all over the screen as I play.

Unfortunately, the pictures are no longer available. But I think our brand new iMac 07 has the same issues. It started with corrupted graphics when opening or closing the curtain in Garage Band. But it's getting worse, just have a look at my screenshots:

  • Audio and Video issue with Windows 8.1 upgrade on Ideapad n585

I upgraded my Ideapad N585 to Windows 8.1 the other day, took forever, but it made it through.  Unfortunately, I now get boot erors for the Dolby software, and the AMD Vision/Catalysyt Control Center.  Neither of these programs are able to start, from startup or even manually.  They just won't run.  Sound seems to come out fine still, but I do have video issues.
First off, my computer doesn't seem to recognize a HDtv as a monitor through the HDMI port.  I still get an image, but it's set to current screen resolution instead of 1080i.  I tried using the detect button to force it to look for a second monitor (my TV), but it showed nothing connected, though at the time I was using two screens.  Now my monitor's screen resolution seems to be a little higher than my TV's, but it doesn't fit the screen properly, and will sometimes put a black border around the desktop, not using the full screen.  I have also noticed, that when plugged into the tv, if a background program like a screen saver starts (and I am one of the few people who still use them, I like BOINC, sue me), it will reset the screen resolution to what it requires.  When the program exits, the screen resolution stays, and that becomes the new max screen resolution until I restart the computer.  So far, it only does this through the tv, if I run the laptop monitor alone, it doesn't happen.
I did try updating the software with what's available through the support site, but nothing happened.  I even went as far as to use the Windows 9x~XP standbys of completely uninstalling, manually removing everything from the system registry I could find relating to these two programs, and then finally reinstalling the software.  Giving the audio and video a complete clean slate to work from, and got no positive results.  I restart the computer, Dolby and Catalyst won't boot, and blind to HDtv.  Problems as described above still apply.
Anybody else have this issue?  Anybody got a fix?

have you found a solution to this?
My computer updated to 8.1 without my wanting it to, I have the same problems as you. I installed the video driver because the brightness was locked on what I had it. (the bar would move but did not change)
I searched for brightness and n585 and I was able to find a driver, now brightness works but HDMI still does not. When I plug in the TV both screens go black with all 4 options in the "project" screen.
    *edit*
this worked for me i stumbled across this
I unplugged the power cable with the hdmi cable plugged in. Hit (windows key+p) scrolled to duplicate and it worked.I plugged in the power cord back in and it still worked.

  • AIR for Android video issue

On Android, in an app that I’ve developed successfully for iOS, I’m seeing this problem:
There are 5 videos built-into the app. On Samsung phones (S3 and S4), running Android 4.4.2, at the first attempt to play a video there’s sound but no picture. After returning to the video menu and attempting again, video and sound play normally. If a video is stopped and another one is started, initially a frame of the previous video is displayed (for a fraction of a second), then play resumes normally with the chosen video.
The sound-but-no-video problem does NOT show up on a Nexus 7 running 4.4.3, although the flash-frame problem does.
I’m publishing with AIR SDK 15 packaging both with and without captive runtime to try to isolate the source of the problem. I’m using <contains video> true </contains video> in the descriptor.
This feels like AIR-for-Android buggishness. Any confirmation out there? Similar problems? Workarounds?
I’ve read somewhere that AIR runtime  v.3.3 may solve some video problems on Android, but not sure where to find an archived Android version of AIR that old.

Well, as it sometimes happens with me, I have spoken too soon. The answer that I marked as ‘correct’ the other day (Colin, are you there?), seems to be not quite the right answer. At least, it doesn’t solve the video problem that I’m having with some, but not all, Android devices.
After trying Colin’s suggestion – using  if (stage.stageVideos.length != 0) to make sure that a stageVideoAvailabilityEvent hasn’t already fired when I try to play my first StageVideo instance – and getting perfect results in 10 consecutive tries on my Samsung S4 and S3 phones, I figured that was IT.
Next day, same devices and same code, it DIDN’T work! I pulled hair, issued profanities, hammered on the table. It didn’t matter—I still got a ‘mis-fire’ on the first play of a video whenever (almost whenever) I opened the app. After the first play everything was good – which is the exact problem that I started with many days ago. When I played Colin’s Sesame Street ‘Let’s Get Ready’ app again – the same first-play-of-video problem shows up there too.
This problem does not show up on Nexus 7  and the Samsung Galaxy 5 Tab. It is a royal p.i.t.a. on Samsung phones, where I need my app to work.
I created a bare-bones app to reproduce the problem, code below. Just a single class to play a single video with no controls. A few parameters (path to the video, and viewport stuff) are passed in from the document Class. I run it 10 times on my S4. It fails 7 times and plays well 3 times. The 'initialize2()' function never fires, proving that the stageVideos array already exists by the the time the 'initialize1()' function is called.
I'm pretty sure that this is not a coding problem (because it works well on some Androids and in iOS), but WHAT is it??

  • DV7 6c90el Sound / Headphones issues

Hello , a few months have passed since i bought this dv7-6c90el (WIN7) and i had a ton of Audio and Video issues which i think i have "fixed for the most". Anyways my main problem now is that i just purchased a new pair of Sony MDR XB200 Headphones and the sound is REALLY low , it is way higher when they're not plugged in. I also tried with another pair of headphones but same problem.
Also in the playback settings i am not able to set headphones as standard PLAYBACK device , it just shows standard communication device or "Ready".
I hope somebody will reply here and help me.
    Cheers.

    Hello Nazee,
Right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select 'Playback Devices'.
Left click the default device once to highlight it ( it's usually 'speakers & headphones' ) then click the Properties button.
Click the Enhancements tab and put a tick in the box next to 'Loudness Equalization'. Click Apply to save the change and then click OK in all remaining windows.
Please let me know if this helps raise the volume of your notebook.
    Good luck!

  • Surround sound support for new MB aluminum?

    Hello, so here's the deal:
I've been looking at a few pairs of headphones that will be plugged in through the USB port and there's a pair that supports 5.1 surround sound and a pair that supports 7.1 (both have 8 speakers built into the headphones).
Does anyone know what kind of surround sound support the new macbook aluminum has, if any?
The deal is that the headphones feature amps (it goes: usb -> amp -> control pod -> headphones), so technically it doesn't require drivers from the Mac into order to get it working, but I don't believe that it will work without the correct digital audio output from the Macbook itself.
Any help on this issue would make me grateful.
PS: if there is either more or less support on the Windows side (via bootcamp) I would love to know that too, because in my switch to Mac, I noticed that it really doesn't have any dedicated control of the sound drivers, whereas Windows XP does.
    Thanks in advance.

Ironically there's apparently a bug that forces all my flash videos to be remixed into 5.1 surround. VERY annoying because now even at hte lowest volume levels it's super loud...

  • Blqack screen, no chime and it's not a video issue

Hi, I got a big problem and I will like to know what your thinking about.
When I try to open my Intel-Based IMac, there's no video. The screen is black but the light came on and the drive and the fan make a sound. The keyboard and the mouse doesnt work and the computer doesnt make a chime.
I tried to find some info on the website of apple
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300537
but it's not the same problem. The fan and the drive is working but I dont have the chime. Then it's not only a video issue, it's not only the display who is not working because the mouse and the keyboard doesn't work and the chime didn't came on.
It's the second time it do that. I didn't install a new software for the last week. The fist time, the technical support told me it was probably a software issue. After a while, I was able to turn on my computer and I made every update. After that, I made a reboot and everything worked. I taught it was ok and I turned off my computer. After the night, the same problem came on. I tried again to turn on and nothing worked. Black screen, no keyboard, no mouse, light turn on, the drive and cd make a sound and no chime. And this time, I was not able to turn on after many reboot with the power button.
I think it's a problem with the computer himself and not a software issue but I dont want to send my computer to a apple store before to confirm it. I need my computer as fast as I can and I don't have a retail neer of my home.

Your symptoms, though not exactly the same, seem to indicate a problem with your RAM. The startup chime is a signal that your Mac has passed the Power On Self Test and suitable RAM was found. No startup chime is usually a sign of bad or poorly seated RAM.
Intel-based Mac Power On Self Test RAM error codes
I would start by removing the RAM modules and test them one at a time in each of the RAM slots to rule out bad RAM or a bad slot. Then seat both modules securely.

Re: Kernel Panic on iMac Intel Core 2 Duo with Lion 10.7.1, 4gb RAM
27-sep-2011 11:53 (in response to jose guzman) Launch the Apple Hardware Test program, run the extended tests at least twice, and then download and run Rember. All indications are that you have bad or flaky RAM.

  • I'm new to Solaris...well *nix in general

I'm new to Solaris...well *nix in general.
While looking into extending my programming knowledge to include Java I came across a link to download Solaris 10 for freeso I did.
I have installed it on an old 1Ghz Athlon box to play with for a while, before I build a new box to put it in. So far so good (apart from the network card). I was wandering if anyone could recommend some good resources to learn how to administer a Solaris 10 box? I would prefer a good book or documents that I can download and print out.
    Thanks
    Gary.

    Sorry, just found docs.sun.com.
