New to Solaris, Some Samba and NTFS issues.

Hi Im new to solaris and trying out ZFS which has been great.
Im haivng some trouble that I cant find up to date info on so here goes:
First how do you mount an NTFS volume in Solaris 11 Express?
I need to access the data on an NTFS drive to populate my new ZFS tank.
Secondly, I have read only access on my samba shares from windows machines but my smb.conf looks right. a copy of my smb.conf will follow
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
# This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
# smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
# here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options (perhaps too
# many!) most of which are not shown in this example
# For a step to step guide on installing, configuring and using samba,
# read the Samba-HOWTO-Collection. This may be obtained from:
# Many working examples of smb.conf files can be found in the
# Samba-Guide which is generated daily and can be downloaded from:
# Any line which starts with a ; (semi-colon) or a # (hash)
# is a comment and is ignored. In this example we will use a #
# for commentry and a ; for parts of the config file that you
# may wish to enable
# NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command "testparm"
# to check that you have not made any basic syntactic errors.

  • Brand New 30GB Won't Charge and Other Issues

I bought this 30GB iPod on Friday night, thinking I would install software, load some music and be on my way. Instead, I have devoted the weekend to getting nowhere. My laptop has 3 2.0 USB ports and I have tried all three. I have repeated the "5 R" routine so many times I think I deserve a medal. The problems vary from attempt to attempt.
Right now the big deals are 1) the battery is not charging, in spite of being connected to the USB for most of the weekend; 2) the most recent "restore" seemed to take place, but now the screen is back to a battery with a lightning bolt (but no animation); 3) Windows does not recognize the iPod today, although yesterday it saw it as an external drive; 4) iTunes does not recognize the iPod, although Friday night it did transfer some songs; 5) the "Do Not Disconnect" screen is a frequent guest, sometimes static, sometimes animated. Reset works just fine to release.
As you might imagine, I am very frustrated, and afraid I have overlooked some silly, simple step that would have saved me all of this headache.
    Help? (And "thanks" in advance!)

  • Fstab,samba and ntfs trouble!!

    Hi!
I have setup samba, everything is working..but!
I use gnome-2.12 for the moment, with hal/dbus and I have been trying to figure out WHY the h*ll gnome can mount the smbfs harddrive, but not unmount it when finished...this ends up with I having like twenty different "mount /mnt/samba " pids if I do a ps -ef
then I have to umount every single one of them by hand and as root!
So , i figured, hey, I must make umount accessible by my user, and I did, it workes because I can umount my ordinary harddrive as a user, but not the sambashare...
SO I read some more with google, and found that this is a bug in umount, so my question is:
Can I use smbumount with the sambashares instead ?? (because that one work)...the trouble is that I can't seem to find any option in GNOME to set which command to use when mounting/unmounting smbfs
or, even better perhaps, is there other ways to get shared files from a Windows machine than using Samba?

If you install M$ SFU on the Windoze box, you can use NFS to connect to it.

  • New Itunes (Beginning april 2010) and iphone issue

So, when you sync with the new itunes, there's an option to convert higher bitrate songs to 128 KBPS AAC...this saves me a lot of space as I only download high quality music, roughly 2 gigs saved space outta 6 gigs I had prior to...anyway, after waiting the hour or so to let it convert and save the space, I no longer have ringtones...what's goin on with this?
Is the convert to 128 kbps aac option just to save space or is there another reason?

If the Ringtones in question are ones you created using methods other than using iTunes built in option costing 99¢ per ringtone, it is likely they are getting converted down as well. Unfortunately, this seems to prevent the iPhone from viewing the files as Ringtones. I'm hoping Apple releases a fix for this glitch so those of us with custom tones can take advantage of the space-saving feature.

  • Solaris 10 x86 and ethernet issue

I am running a Gigabyte 7NF-RZ mobo (nVIDIA chipset) with an onboard LAN. I installed the x86 version of Solaris 10 and it does not see the ethernet. So, I have two questions:
    1) Is there a driver available for this and if so, where do I find it?
    2) If I have to use a PCI ethernet card, which ones work with x86? I have check the HCL list and only Sun cards are certified. There are lots of other that are "reported" to work but I really don't want to have to buy several cards and experiment.
    TIA

The old 3-Com 905B series is a safe bet. It's supported and Solaris comes with the driver(elxl) out of the box.

  • A very new user needs some help and advice....

    Hi,
I have just taken the bold leap into Indesign and this is the first day of my 30 day trial.
I need help and advice from you good poeple...please.
I have been successfully creating A5 booklets (folded A4) using MS Word and printing to a desktop printer. MS Word sorted out my page order for me at printing time so the correct pages were put together.
I have been reading as much information as I could find but I am still unable to do the same in Indesign.
I'm looking forward to using the advanced layout features and having control over what I do but, I need to work out this basic step before I go any further.
I hope what I have explained makes sense.
    Regards
    John

So presumably you create a new document, A5 portrait, facing pages. Make sure your ducument page count is a multiple of 4.
Create, type, tweak, ponder, edit, smile, save.
To create you booklet using InDesign, from the file menu select Print Booklet.
You will probably need to jump back and forth from the Print Settings button adjusting Paper Size, Orientation, Color, and from the Print Booklet tab set for 2-up Saddle Stitch.
Much has been posted on this topic, these are the basics, Print Booklet is not the best module Adobe ever wrote, IMO

  • I have some Flash and Spry issues

    Hi everyone!
I have one question about Flash and Spry Accordion panels. I
made this site for a school project and got the go ahead and do
these ladies' website. They love it! They loved the Panels, but I
don't like what Flash and the panels are doing in FireFox.
    http://hoittsappraisals.com/
What I'm seeing is the panels sliding under the Flash element
that is in the first panel, but in IE its fine. What can I do to
fix it if there is a fix?
Thank you! And I can't wait till I can try CS3 I've seen the
Spry features that are built in and am totally jealous that it's
goin to be super easy to incorporate, when we've been slaving away
by hand!! haha, anyway, Any comments on the site would be much
    appreciated!
    Thanks
    Noah W

    Hi Noah,
Your flash object is using a native window ... which mozilla
(firefox) can't clip from the main canvas window underneath it.
There's an attribute/arg you can pass to flash that tells it
to share the same canvas as the browser. I think its called wmode,
but I'm not a flash person. I've asked folks internaly who are more
knowledgeable than me in the flash arena, so I'll get back to you
when they get back to me.

  • New to Solaris administration - Need some help with some issues

    Hello all,
I am a new to Solaris administration and need some assistance with a few things. I was going to make separate posts but decided it would be easy to keep track of in one. I really do not know much about the OS but I do have a little Linux background so that might help me out. I am going to number my problems to keep them sorted, so here we go.
    The machine:
    Sunfire V880
    4x 73GB HDs
PCI dual fiber channel host adapter
    Attached RAID array:
Sun StorEdge T3 Array with 9x 73GB HDs
Sun DDS4 Tape Drive in a Unipack
    OS: Solaris 5.10
Updates: Updated everything except 2 patches (Updating is a real pain isn't it? At least it seems that way to me.)
    1. So I might as well start with the update issues! These 2 updates will not install:
    -PostgreSQL 8.2 source code, (137004-02)
Utility used to install the update failed with exit code {0}.
-Patch for mediaLib in solaris, (121620-03)
Install of update failed. Utility used to install the update is not able to save files. Utility used to install the update failed with exit code 4.
No idea why the PostgreSQL update is not working, but the medialib patch seems to not have enough hard drive space.
    2. Where are all the drives? I don't know how to find the RAID box or the other 3 internal hard drives. When I installed the OS, I think I installed it on only one hard drive and that might be part of the reason why the medialibe update above says that I don't have enough space.
    3. I probably need more space for the OS and updates, is there a way to "add" space onto the hard drive that currently is running the OS?
    3. Once I see the other hard drives I wish to combine them to make a RAID 0 and RAID 5 array, how do I go about doing that?
    4. How can I find/see the tape drive?
    5. Does my swap space really need to be 64GB? I know the book I have read suggests it, but I only made it 5GB because it didn't seem to make sense to make it 64GB.
Thank you in advance for the help. I know these are a lot of questions to ask but please go easy on me :)

    1.
    -PostgreSQL 8.2 source code, (137004-02)
Utility used to install the update failed with exit code {0}.
Exit code 0 means there were no errors. When you run showrev -p 137004-02, does your system show that the patch is installed? You can check the log for a particular patch add attempt in /var/sadm/patch/+patch_num_rev+1- A bunch of stuff shows up, here is a portion (I am not entirely sure what it means, there must be a least a page of stuff like this):

  • Bi Dashboards issue works properly some times and after not display pointers data and give un expected error and throw login window

    HI,
I have toff situation where  we deployed bi dashboards in our site and it works some time and some times not,
and some times it keep loading and throw a login window.
    works when
we restart performance point service  and if not work
we re create secure store service and generated new key and create new pps service application
before that we stopped secure store and pps service  using c.a in application server
we are using ssas for datasource to connect  from dashboard designer
we have seperate server for ssas dbs
seperate application server running: pps service and secure store service
two web front ends:  one of running secure store
1 Domain controller + central admin service running
some times after 4 -5 hours bi dashboards works , we dashboards not display data and throw un expected errors,
also when we try to connect using a dashboard designer from a seperate client machine in same domain ,we have same issue , we unable to connect to ssas datasource server, and if connect some times unable to deploy dashboards.
we tried every thin icreased server time out values  in ssas server
    :\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSAS10_50.MSSQLSERVER\OLAP\Config\msmdsrv.ini. in this location

  • Samba and Solaris, access slow via XP

    Hi everyone,
I've new to solaris and I've installed 10, update 5. I've configured samba (very badly I believe) so that I can access my solaris box from my XP 64 computer.
Both are on a local network (connected via a Belkin router) and in the same workgroup. I can see the XP machine from solaris, but not access anything (I just get a 'cannot show contents of directory' message). This is not my main problem, since I mostly want to access the solaris system from XP (I want to set up the solaris box as a RAID Z NAS). This works to a degree. I can see and access my solaris filesystem from XP. Hurray. I have two problems:
    1. I have set guest to NO, but I never get asked for a password (I've set up an account on the solaris system with a password using smbpasswd). I just get access. Why is this? I don't want a bunch of ner-do-wels skulking about my server and erasing files and such.
    2. While I can stream music fine, after a minute or so, if I want to browse files from XP it stalls for about one minute (I think it is re-logging in) and while this happens any music being streamed stops. How do I stay connected and logged in? Here is my smb.conf:
    # Samba config file created using SWAT
    # from 192.168.2.3 (192.168.2.3)
    # Date: 2008/05/11 18:46:15
    [global]
         socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_KEEPALIVE IPTOS_LOWDELAY
         ldap ssl = no
    [home]
         read only = No
         guest ok = No
         available = No
    [homes]
         valid users = %S
         read only = No
         guest ok = No
As you can tell I'm pretty new to all this so you may have to dumb down your answers a little. Thanks for the help.
    Cisco

    Yup.....repeatable!
    Delete mapped drive.
    Connect via USB
Playbook shows in windows explorer as PlayBook [Pin: number] Y:  being the drive that XP has mapped it to.
Then search for the PlayBook by ip address \\192.168.1.x
It shows up under workgroup by its ip address
    Disconect USB cable
    Workgroup connect remains (via wifi)
    Strange to say the least.

  • New Airport Extreme and iPhone Issues

I've had the networking day from ****. I previously had a 3rd Gen Time Capsule at our restaurant, connected to a Cisco 26port gigabit POE switch and Comcast digital voice and internet. Over the past few days, employees have reported trouble accessing the the Wifi network. After several restarts and firmware upgrades (including the dreaded "firmware problem" to fine update), nothing worked. I changed channels, back to auto, back to specific channels, back to auto. Made open guest networks. Nothing worked consistently. My iPhone might connect and my friend's might not. Nor his laptop consistently. Our Axis network cameras might take a bit extra time to connect. All quite random and quite frustrating.
So I swap out an older Airport Extreme (4th gen I believe) using the same configuration as the TC (Time Capsule). It works fine, except for the last port not working as expected. No matter, I plug the mac mini into the Cisco switch and off we go. Nevertheless, I'm still told we are suffering random Wifi issues. So I buy a brand new AE (5th gen) today to replace that one. Should work like a charm I thought. Right....
Several hours later, I finally have the new AE working, but only after doing several hard resets/factory restores, the works. For some reason, the mac mini could not successfully update any of the connected AEs - whether connected directly into the same AE, or if the Mini was connected to the switch. Nothing worked. Every time I tried to update the AE, it would hang and force me to unplug and plug it back in. It would also never save setting changes. I finally resorted to a friend's macbook to be able to restore it successfully. And once that worked, the mini was able to update the AE flawlessly. Our Point of Sales (POS) machines connect fine, our cameras connect fine, wifi printer connects, and the mini connects, and everything has internet.
Except my iPhone 5. Of course. It gets a signal fine (full bars). It gets an IP address. But I can't surf the web. Or download email. Or iMessages. Anything. No internet access. I try hard restarts on my iphone. I try assigning IP addresses by MAC address. I try resetting the AE. I try renaming the WiFi name. Nothing. I can make a guest network that works (on a different IP table, btw - 172, not 192.) But other than that, no access. Grrrr.
So I have a "working" AE router where some devices successfully connect (through wifi and ethernet) and some dont' (wifi iPhone). My iPhone connects fine to my home TC. So shouldn't be anything to do with that. But I'm at a loss. I'm going to go back and restore everything and power cycle everything tonight or tomorrow night. I don't know if that will help, but it's worth a try. Lord knows it feels like I've tried everything else.
Anyone have any good ideas of where to start besides voodoo dolls and baseball bats?

I took mine back, because I was having these very same issues. We use contivity too. I was able to connect only to one of three of the servers we manage (in Europe). I couldn't connect to the servers in Asia or here in the USA.
Replaced the Airport Extreme with my trusty old d-link 624, and no issues connecting to any of the three hubs.
Otherwise, I liked the Airport Extreme, and I'll consider buying it again when and if they address this VPN issue. I work at home so its obviously a "deal breaker" for me.

Hello (hopefully someone can shed some light on my issue)
I own as above a MAC PRO (Early 2008) this has a RAID card installed along with two 15k.7 cheetah hdd (320gb) and a spare drive, (which i made a regular drive)
a while ago i had to replace the RAID card battery, so i did this, over a year later the same thing happened again, but as previous just left it and the system seemed fine for ages, until last night i was working in PHOTOSHOP and everything just froze and the screen kind of appeared GREEN, could not do a single thing. So restarted the mac, this time grey screen for ages and a message appeared, (macs version of blue screen) (see attached).
I restarted the machine and this time a flashing question mark folder!
    could not do a thing.
so i found my copy of snow leopard and got the computer to run this and at least launch the DISK UTILITY and (Interestingly in the drop down menu RAID UTILITY was also in the menu) but it did not matter which utility i used the (RAID or DISK) neither could see any of drives, just the dvd drive.
so looked around on you tube and various forums and discovered if i take out the RAID CARD and re-plug the main lead from the RAID card back in to the LOGIC BOARD I would be reverting the MAC to a normal regular non-RAID computer.
After performing this HARDWARE task and inserting all three HDD, and running the DISK utility from the drop down menu via the SNOW LEOPARD disc.
(interestingly since the RAID card had been removed the RAID UTILITY  from the drop down menu no longer appeared). running disk utility I can now only see the regular (spare) hdd and DVD Drive, but the two RAID HDD , again, still do not show up DISK UTILITY?
O.K. so i could chuck out the RAID card (AND RAID HDD) and just go with a regular set-up, and run a back restore from Time Machine on a NEW hdd purchased.
but what is wrong with the RAID, is the card at fault or are both HDD used for the RAID knackered? can i perform any tests, to see whats what?
thanks for your help in advanced.

hello people, the issue was in fact the GRAPHICS card nothing to do with the HDD or RAID system ( although this did cause issues with the RAID system it basically lost its way) below is my replay to another similar  problem some one else had!
working in photoshop and then everything stopped working and the lot froze! only option was to force shutdown (via button).
and try to restart, hoping all was fine, this was not the case :-(
I had the added issue of the RAID card system, that i have, this was confused to say the lease and would not behave or work, causing the start up to hang.
so i thought the HDD must be bust and the root cause. ( but soon learnt it was not the cause )
...bought a new HDD removed the RAID card and replugged the cable from RAID card into LOGIC board, ( making the computer act like any normal non-RAID system). I managed to install the OSX, using the snow leopard disk way. once the mac was running, i started to notice the screen would flicker and started to see 'artefacts'. so i started to reveal my symptoms to the web and forums and soon discovered that my graphics card could be the issue all along?.
    (nvidia geforce 8800gt 2x dvi).
I read up on that a fix, could be either A. reply the thermal paste, as the card could be over heating or B. stick the card in the oven trick.
Tried option A. first and nothing still issues, so last night took the plunge carried out option B. and ta da it worked! i even managed to run
from my new HDD my lasted install OS X, absolutely fine. I then thought, maybe i could repair my RAID so replugged all the HARDWARD back in and
carried out a disk repair and disk permissions on drives( took a small amount of time), via the SNOW LEOPARD disc - (Disk utilities) and this worked and now have my system working as it was just over 6 days ago.
what was the cost to get this?  bought a new hdd so 40.00gbp and thermal paste and cleaner kit ( your still need to do this ) search video card trick on you tube.
and renew thermal paste, approx 15.00gbp, technically i don't need the new HDD, but it was all part of the trial and error way i went. ( i do have extra storage as a result!)"
