Network virtualization and physical LB
Hi,
How do you add a pc in a Hyper-v virtual network (HNV) as a resource in a physical load balancen?
Let's say that i have 10 web servers in a HNV in subnet 192.168.1.0/24, and my load balancer in placed in the physical core network at 10.70.10.1, and i want to create a Load Balance VIP for alle servers in my HNV 192 network.
I use a citrix netscaler, and it does not look like its supports the NVGRE.
I know that there is a "network virtualization gateway", but how does that work? do i need to setup NAT from 192.168.1.x to 10.70.10.x, and then add the 10.70.10.x ip to my LB - it will require a 10.70.10.x ip for every ressource i need in my LB.
As long as you don't have any overlapping IP spaces in virtual network environment, you can deploy windows server gateway and configure it for forwarding (direct routing). Then you get a gw that acts as a router between your physical network and virtual
networks. Once gw is up and running, you'll need to add information about your "virtualized subnets" to the routing tables of your LB and other router/gateways in your environment, so that they will know where to send packets to (or configure router announcement/discovery
protocols in your physical network).
See the following article for more information about forwarding gateways:
Windows Server Gateway as a forwarding gateway for private cloud environments
I would suggest you reconsider using network virtualization in a private environment, if you already have a segmentet physical network that relies on VLANs for isolation. Using VLAN-based logical networks (without network virtualization) may, in this case,
simplify your deployment and make better use of existing network infrastructure.
Gleb.

How to configure network virtualization in SCVMM 2012 R2 with two host
hi everyone... can you teach me how i configure networking in my infrastructure..
i am getting confuse that i have 2 phisical server, i don't know to set the netwokring in scvmm. Every best practice, i found in internet is using more than 2 physical server.
i have been tried before with the networking which i want..but it failed...
any one help me please...This whitepaper should explain the required steps to get this working.
http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Hybrid-Cloud-with-NVGRE-aa6e1e9a
The whitepaper will use more than two hyper-v hosts, but you'll get the picture.
You can have 1 host to run your NVGRE VMs, while the other host should be dedicated to run the virtualization gateway VMs.

Data guard synchronization after link down b/w primary and physical standby
Hi All,
I have configured data guard on oracle 11gr2 db. Normally switchover between my primary and physical standby happens smoothly and the Apply lag would be zero. Recently We had to test a scenario when the network link between Primary and Physical standby is completely down and Physical standby is isolated completely for more than half an hour.
When we brought up the link every thing worked smoothly but apply lag started increasing from 0 to around 3 hrs. And then it started reducing to 0. Currently Apply lag and transport lag shows 0.
But is this normal behaviour of oracle data guard that when the link between primary and physical standby is completely down, It requires 3-4 hrs for resynchronization ??? Even when during isolation, there were very few transactions happend on primary database ??
Are there any documents available for this scenario??
ThanksHi, after the link is up, if there were some transactions and produced archive logs it's normal to take some time for resync. To check if 3-4 hours is normal or not, you can repeat the scenario and this time check
- how many archivelogs does primary produce in this period.
- after the link is up, does archivelog transfer immediately starts from primary to standby? Is primary able to send these archivelogs parallel?
- Is there anything wrong with the apply process?
check primary & standby alert log files, and run this query on standby to check the transport and apply processes:
SELECT PROCESS, STATUS, THREAD#, SEQUENCE#, BLOCK#, BLOCKS FROM V$MANAGED_STANDBY;

Losing network connection and NIC acts weird from warm/hot weather/temperatures?
Hello.
Is there a known issue on MSI P43 NEO3-F (MSI-7514) motherboards' onboard RealTek RTL8168C (P)/8111C(P) PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC network disconnecting and acting weird during warm/hot weather?
I noticed lately and back on 1/11/2009 night when weather got warm/hot (e.g., my room can get over 85F degrees, but lately it has been 80F degrees), my network would lose its connection. See http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/5580/screenshots.gif for a few SpeedFan's sensor readings when the incidents occurred. I have never seen this happen when the weather is cooler (60-70F degrees in my room).
I also think this only happens if I am using the PC lightly (nothing intensive) like watching fullscreen videos (video overlay), surfing the Web, etc. I don't see any errors or evidences that it happens when idled (e.g., asleep or out). Uptime doesn't seem to matter since I have seen days to 3.5 hours.
I tried upgrading network driver twice (e.g., Realtek_XP_5714_0219 from
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=13&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false ...), disabling Kerio Personal Firewall v2.1.5 (XP's disabled already), releasing and renewing IP address (works, but still no network -- can't even ping my router!), unplugging and replugging the cat5 cable (do see the network port lights on), touching the network jack and hardware inside and outside of the case (not hot), trying another cat5 cable and a network port on a switch instead router's), changing from "Minimal Power Management" to full power (no underclocking/slowing down when idled), etc.
During the disconnections, I tried:
C:\>tracert 192.168.0.1
Tracing route to 192.168.0.1 over a maximum of 30 hops

I also noticed the disconnections usually start with red X icon in my taskbar with its bubble and then later the long disconnection even though no red X (1 GB and connected). If I were to disconnect the cat5 cable from NIC, then it wouldn't even detect it is missing the cable!
The only way to fix this was to reboot (best way and last longer) OR disable network connection and re-enable it (Windows XP's Network Connections) or the NIC itself (Device Manager), but that doesn't always last long (maybe a minute). Example of my pings right after disabling and re-enabling NIC:
C:\>ping 192.168.0.1 -t

Force your NIC to run at 100Mbps full duplex and see how it goes.
Check your router / switch ports as well as cables.
I will try 100 Mbps if it happens again. So far, it hasn't occurred after installing the driver supplied by MSI's Web site and not RealTek's Web site. The room temperatures even got warmer like 83F degrees.
As for router and switch, what am I checking for? Other computers didn't have any problems. As for cat5 cables, I already tried another one like I said in my original post. -
Hi All,
What is the difference between virtual IP and physical IP. Can some one tell me what is the use of virual IP. I think physical IP means listening port of the web-logic server. Is it possible to deploy any application on virual IP.
Thanks,
Venkat. What is the difference between virtual IP and physical IP?
IP – the abbreviation means Internet Protocol.
Physical IP – Network Port is used to bring a system under network and rest of the world communicates with system through this port in reference of an Address. This is called Internet Protocol Address (IP Address). The address which is bind with Physical Network Port (RJ45) is known as Physical IP Address of that system.
Virtual IP – With the help of inbuilt OS utility we can create/configure virtual network port and assign IP address to it. This is called Virtual IP.
Use of Virtual IP – Suppose you have two physical network ports (Two network card). Now you have configured one virtual network IP/port and assigne it to a program. When Rest of the world access your program, the packet passes through any of the physical network port and reach to the virtual IP/Port associated with the program. If any one of two Network card damages, your program will not suffer.
Extensive use of VIP is found in Web server Virtual hosting.
Is it possible to deploy any application on virtual IP? – Configure VIP in your system and assign the same to a Managed Server. Deploy application on that managed server. Your application will run on VIP.
From OS point of view VIP is something like adding a Network Card virtually and assign an address to it. But, to run an application on VIP, the best way is to configure Virtual Host. -
NETWORK crashes and doesnt open
Hello, my internet was not working and I read that I should go on Library/systemconfiguration and erase the whole file. I did so, and I restarted my computer. However, now when I open system preferences, and I click on NETWORK it crashes.
What should I do if it doesnt open it keeps crashing I cant open network at all... the roulette just keeps turning and turning and turning...I tried creating another User Account and the problem persists.
Then you must have deleted a OS X system level file.
I dont understand how to recreate the folder.. can I do it without erasing anything on my computer ?
Yes, but you need to backup your personal data off the machine first as it's risky.
Copy your files to a external storage drive, you'll have to buy one at the local computer or office store.
Connect it, and don't set up a TimeMachine drive if it asks as it will take a long time and you will still have your problem. You can set that up later.
So say "No" to TimeMachine and drag and drop copies of your Users folders of "Music" "Pictures" "Movies" "Documents" and anything other folder in your "Home" folder that has your personal data in it to the external drive.
You will see a "+" sign and a window will appear that it's copying to the other drive.
When finished, unmount the drive, eject it and physically disconnect this external drive. Now you have a backup of your data off the machine and safe.
Now follow the steps in 18. Reinstall Just OS X
Step by Step to fix your Mac
which will link to this page where it says:
How to reinstall just OS X
How to reinstall just OS X or erase/install OS X
This will give you a new OS X and fix all your OSX + Apple program problems in one shot
Make sure to Software update fully afterwards. You should be fine after that and the comptuer should operate with all your files etc.
Good Luck -
Windows Server Gateway for Network Virtualization
Dear Experts !
I am trying out Network Virtualization now as we have Windows Server 2012 R2 and SCVMM 2012 R2 released.
My question is specific to the network configuration for Hyper V data traffic and WSG.
Here is the details on different subnets I am planning to use.
VLAN 16 - Management
VLAN 36 - Virtualized Subnet
VLAN 46 - Virtualized Subnet
The dedicated server for WSG is having 4 NICs. I am planning to use one for management, one for external traffic and one for internal traffic.
What should be the VLAN used for internal interface in WSG ? Is it OK to use a trunk of VLAN 36 and VLAN 46 ? Or do we need a different subnet apart from the Virtualized subnet ?
Thanks in advance.
Cheers ! ShabaHi Shaba,
How are things going?

SCVMM Network Virtualization - simulate DMZ network inside network virtualization
Hi All,
Here is my question. Is the following scenario possible. HyperV 2012R2 hosts, SCVMM2012r2.
I create a new VM Network (with network isolation) and create VMs on that network (with SCVMM). I'll call this network Corpnet.
Is it possible to have a separate network that is also virtualized that can act as the DMZ network for the Corpnet?
I'm having trouble to make this work. VM networks are working as expected.
1. I tried creating two separete VM networks and creating a VM that has two network interfaces on both VM networks with the RRAS role and LAN routing. But I cant make the traffic be routed from one VM Network to the other one. (in this example I change the
gateway on the network cards for the VMs on the two VM Networkis to point to the VMRouter interfaces.)
2. I tried creating two VLANs on the same VM network . I use again a VM as a router. The traffic starts behaving weird and doesn't pass through the VMRouter but goes directly between the two VLANs. (in this example I change the gateway on the network cards
for the VMs on the two VLANs to point to the VMRouter interfaces.)If SCVMM is in control of the network virtualization setup, it won't swallow traffic, it will forward according to its configuration rules.
If SCVMM defined the gateway as 192.168.0.1 (always the first IP in the subnet) then that is the routing that is setup. And your router VM must have that IP on that subnet. And, SCVMM must have provisioned that VM with that IP.
The customer routes and rules are the definitions of how the virtual network knows where to forward what. These are the routing rules and SCVMM is in control.
If you manually edit network settings within a VM, SCVMM won't put it back, but the networking rules won't align with those edits and thus traffic will happen, but the virtual switch won't know where to send it, so it 'disappears'.
SCVMM is unaware of your different gateways. And thus does not have them established in the routing rules in the virtual switches.

what is a Logical and Physical file path in sap?
Hi,
Physical file is what you see from the OS level.
Logical file is what ABAP code can call certain functions to read/write.
Transaction FILE would link them together. Typically the logical path ends with "<FILENAME>", and the logical file refers to the logical path.
To extract the physical path from the logical path name

lf_opsys TYPE sy-opsys.
lf_mandt = sy-mandt.
lf_opsys = sy-opsys.

Logical and physical clear in ASO
Hi There,
I found one statement for Logical and physical clear in essbase dbag
The process for logically clearing data completes in a length of time that is proportional to
the size of the data being cleared.
The process for physically clearing data completes in a length of time proportional to the
size of the input data, not to the size of the data being cleared
What does size of the input data actually means? How it is different from data being cleared.
Thanks. What is interesting with these statements is based on them, you would think a logical clear would be slower than a physical clear. In reality, it is vastly faster. I took a 30 minute physical clear down to about 40 seconds with a logical clear. Logical clers create offsetting entries from the main cube in a slice to produce a result whila a physical clear deletes the actual data. The one thing about logical clears is rather than have #missing for cleared intersections you get zeros

Logical and Physical Length in Datastore
I would like to know the differences between logical length and physical length in datastore. Can anyone teach best practices to use them properly?
Thank you Bouch,
So usually is it required to set "logical length + 2" for physical length?
Also, can you show exapmles for sign and dot, which to be added on each columns?

File format determination (Required / optional fields and field checks).
Logical File Path configuration through transaction 'FILE'. A new physical file path should be created on operating system level or an existing one can be used if agreed. The Basis team member should create a new file path at operating system level, if required.

Network based and a-gps, data use tests
i was trying to find this kind of info, but only found others asking.
i hope this is useful info for others, especially while roaming.
skip to the bottom for conclusion,
this is the process i took:
i called nokia tech support,
their phone support his horrible,
the people on the phone don't actually know anything, and have to look up everything you ask them.
they were the worst.
i emailed nokia tech support.
my message was:
"i would like to know the difference between assisted gps positioning, and network based positioning. these are 2 of the 4 options on my nokia e66 for positioning methods. i would like to know if network based positioning uses internet data from my service provider to obtain my gps position. i am especially concerned with this function while i'm roaming internationally, as i do not want to be charged for roaming data use."
in about half hour they responded w/ an answer, and then 45 min after that someone else responded w/ an answer.
the first response, minus the hello's etc. was:
"In response to your email, Assisted GPS and Network Based positioning methods generate costs related to data traffic so you will be charged for data use. Only "normal" GPS and Bluetooth GPS do not generate additional costs related to data traffic.
Normal GPS is quite slow and does not work indoors. Therefore, it is recommended to enable at least A-GPS to get a faster position outdoors.
Network based and Wi-Fi positioning also allow you to update your position inside buildings, but they cannot be used for navigation."
the 2nd response was:
"In response to your inquiry, the difference between Assisted GPS positioning (A-GPS) and Network based positioning is that, A-GPS uses satellites while Network based positioning is based on information of your cellular network environment. It allows you to update your position inside buildings, but they cannot be used for navigation. Both positioning methods generate costs related to data traffic (unless you have configured the device to use Wi-Fi connection to make the internet connection). The cost may vary while you are on roaming. Kindly contact the service provider for information about data transmission costs."
i can also respond w/ more questions, but instead did some tests, starting with sitting home, indoors, and eventualy moving to a window w/ lots of sky.
test 1:
i enabled:
integrated gps
network based
assisted gps
opened maps,
set maps to be offline,
set default internet access point to my home wlan network,
closed maps,
cleared all counters and the log on the phone's communication log.
opened maps
there is a pink circle around the area i may be in,
the icon that would show gps satellite strength, changes to show the cell phone antenna icon.
but the packet data counter is sending/receiving a total of around 3-8kb immediately, and over the course of time, it keeps adding up, every 1-2 minutes, and it is shown as packet data to/from the access point "at&t internet"
over the course of ten minutes, it's been about 43kb.
and i can tell on the phone's home screen that the packet data connection becomes active when it does.
the maps kb indicator still says 0.0kb, with a line through the double arrow packet data symbol.
test 2:
now i exited maps,
cleared the counters and logs
i turned off a-gps.
enabled only integrated gps and network based.
i open maps,
the same thing is happening as with the assisted gps on, except i connected to my home wlan once, in the middle of connecting to at&t internet 10 or so times.
everything else is happening the same.
test 3:
i exited maps,
cleared the counters and logs.
enabled only integrated gps.
i open maps, and there is no evidence of packet data connection, or wlan connection.
nothing is showing up in the logs or packet counters, and there is no pink circle around where i may be.
if i set maps to go online, w/ my wlan as the access point, or at&t internet, their respective icons show up on maps, as well as the phone's home screen.
the phone's log show respective connections are made but w/ 0.0kb, and the phone's packet counter, as well as the maps kb usage, say 0.0kb.
test 4:
set maps to offline, w/ my wlan as access point.
exited maps,
turned phone off for a bit to test gps from cold start.
turned on phone,
cleared counters/logs,
enabled only assisted gps and integrated gps.
open maps, there's no pink circle around where i may be, just the red dot of where it thought i last was.
there's about 4-5kb of data transfer,
then i bring the phone to the window where there's a lot of clear sky, and my location is found pretty fast.
i know that w/o assisted gps, w/ only integrated gps, it takes a while to get the gps signals.
i went back and forth to/from the window, and there was packet data use again only once more, not continuously like w/ network based positioning.
so to conclude my tests,
setting the maps to be offline, still uses a-gps and network based positioning.
network based uses a more data, continuously,
which is the opposite of what i thought, i thought a-gps would use more, so i was using network based on and a-gps off while in canada. whoops.
using assisted gps uses about 5-10kb, which, when roaming, according to at&t, they charge 1.95cents/kb.
might be worthwhile for getting a quick gps signal, nothing worse than waiting forever for it to connect.
the only way to be completely clear of data use is disable network based and assisted gps, or set the phone to offline mode.A-GPS: This uses information from cell network to get a rough idea of where you are. It then uses this information to figure out which satellites to look for. Result is a faster satellite lock. So A-GPS uses a few kB of data to get an initial position, but navigation is done using GPS satellites, which does not require ANY data connection.
Network based: This uses information from the cell network to plot the current position when GPS satellite signal is not available, ie indoors, in a tunnel, etc. Position info derived from the cell network is not as accurate as that from GPS satellites, but serves as a stopgap until GPS signal can be re-acquired. Network based positioning used your data connection EACH TIME the satellite lock is lost. So the amount of data used is dependent on the quality of access you have to the GPS satellites. If you don't lose the connection to the GPS satellites, then you won't use any data.
The ‘offline’ option within the Nokia Maps app only refers to street, POI, etc searches, NOT to A-GPS, Network based positioning or to connecting with the GPS satellites.
If you want to navigate without using ANY data connection, set A-GPS off AND set Network based positioning off AND set the Internet option in Nokia Maps to Offline. Do this and you will not use any of your data connection allowance when navigating. There is no need to put the phone into flight mode.
If I've helped you, you can thank me by clicking the green 'kudos' star on my post. Cheers. -
