Never connect to 5GHz network

Hi, I bought a dual-band TM last year (just out of warranty by a week) which I recently moved to a more central part of the house and close to where cable comes in. Since doing so, 2.4GHz coverage of the house has improved but nothing now connects to the 5GHz network. Before, the iMac was in the same room as theTM so I never noticed this issue but now, using the MBP and AirRadar, signal strength for the 5GHz network is clearly below the 2.4 network all the time. I am aware of 5GHz signal drop-off but literally, in order to connect to the 5GHz network the MBP has to be about 8 feet from the TM. Even then signal strength is only in the50s compared to the 2.4 network which is in the 80's from that distance. I've tried manually setting channels, turning on and off interference robustness, turning on and off wide-channnels to no avail. I turned on the 5GHz name option and forced the MBP to connect to it and the speed was dreadful. The whole point of me getting the dual band was so all my n-devices could be on their own, superfast network. Clearly that is not happening. Any suggestions on what I can do to fix that? Thanks!

"Signal Strength (sometimes known as RSSI), displayed in AirRadar as a percentage, is how strong the connection to the wireless network is. "
Although signal strength (RSSI) is routinely displayed in units of dBm (in which a larger negative number represents a weaker signal), it apparently isn't strictly tied to that unit of measure:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSSI
I installed AirRadar and I see that it's showing the strength as a percentage. In that case I have to wonder what a value of 100% would mean.
I also find it odd that AirRadar only shows a value for noise in the "Details" tab of "Graph". I think it would be useful to show the noise level in the other panels.
If it is in fact better to have a lower signal strength, why then is the 5GHz virtually MIA when more than 10 feet from the TC?
My earlier comments were based on the expectation that the values you were seeing were given in dBm, in which a lower absolute value indicates a stronger signal.
I can't explain why you're seeing tha 5 GHz behavior, unless it's related to that other thread.

  • Unable to connect to 5ghz network band with security/password

Hi, I've recently set up a 5ghz network band on my router. The problem is I can't connect to it while it has password enabled. However, I am able to connect while it has no security/password. I would like to connect to the router using some kind of security or password
           I am using a Netgear Router WNDR3400v2.

You need to contact Netgear for support, it's their router they would probably know how to support it best.

  • MacBook Air 6,2 does not connect to 5GHz network

    Hi,
My problem is about wi-fi connection. When I try to connect to my network (Time Capsule 5 GHz), it doesn't connect. Password is right.
Also I try to connect using terminal, and it show me this output:
Failed to join network SML TC 5 ГГц.
Error: -3905  The operation couldn’t be completed. (com.apple.wifi.apple80211API.error error -3905.)
The Mac connect good to regular wi-fi network. My iPhone connect to 5 GHz TC without any problem.
So, can you help me with this issue.
PS. I can give you any required additional info.

    Hello:
I just purchased a new Motorola DROID 2 Global, and am having difficulty connecting it to my home WiFi network. My router is a DLINK 655 router, which I have set to 802.11n only with WPA2 encryption and I do not broadcast the SSID. I have gone through the setup process on the DROID 2 by entering the SSID on the phone providing my password etc. The phone keeps attempting to connect to the WiFi network, but just cannot do so. I have a Lenovo laptop which has no problem connecting to the network at the same time, and I have connect it many times.
If I change the router setting to broadcast the SSID, the phone will connect. But as soon as I hide it again, the connection will drop. The saved network setting on the phone will show "Not in range" even though I am standing right next to the router, and the phone connected to it just a minute ago when the SSID was being broadcast.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is there a solution to this problem or is this a known limitation of the phone?
A soft reset may resolve your WiFi connectivity concerns. Please remove the battery from your phone while is ON. Re-insert battery after 10 seconds. Power phone ON and allow it to register applications.

  • Xbox/PC can't connect to 5gHz network (E4200 v2)

My network is discoverable, but my machines will not connect (they were connected previously).  They can connect to the 2.4gHz network, but not the 5 (I use the 5 for streaming media and gameplay).  Windows 7 says it's unable to connect.
Thanks for helping a networking n00b.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

According to the scenario try the following combination of steps:
A] With the help of Cisco Connect Software (if at all you have installed the router with the help of this software)
1] Open the software and go to the option which says "Router Settings"
2] Then click on the option which says "Advanced Settings" which will take you to the router's configuration page.
3] Then go to the Wireless tab, keep network mode as mixed,
For Channel Settings of 5 GHz you can make Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 40 or 161...
B] If you haven't installed Cisco Connect then you can log on to the router's user interface using it's default IP address in the browser which is 192.168.1.1 and type in 'admin' as the password leaving the username field blank. This will take you to the router's web interface and then follow steps as mentioned above to make the changes.
Second, update the drivers for the wireless card of the Laptop and Xbox then check the connectivity status.

  • Can anyone guide me to connect my 5ghz network. After updating to ios6 this network is not showing on my iPad but ok with Mac.

I have installed ios6 on my iPad with following problems.o
    1. My 5 ghz is not showing although my Mac works fine with 5 ghz. Can anyone give me guidance?
    2. Had problems with kindle books- it completely gone. Tried to delete kindle app and reinstalled. Now it is ok.

You can't connect directly to the external drive, but should be able to use iTunes Home Sharing via the laptop.

  • Extending a 5Ghz network

I have a dual band Airport Extreme running two separate networks, N 5GHz and b/g/n 2.4GHz. I purchased a Airport Express (N model) and would like to extend my 5GHz network, however when I try the express never sees the 5GHz network. No matter how many settings I change, or how close the base stations are to each other (right next to each other) I cant get it to work. If it helps I live in Japan and these are Japanese models.

OK, no problem. Happy to help. I just did this with my AEBS and AX to confirm that it will work to extend the 5 GHz network.
Open AirPort Utility and select your AEBS
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
There is a check box to "Allow this network to be extended" under the Wireless Network Name. Make sure you have this checked.
Click Wireless Options and make sure you have assigned a name to the 5 GHz network
    Click Update
    Now select the AX
    Click Manual Setup
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode should be "Extend a wireless network". If you don't see this, hold down the option key on your computer when you click on the selection box
Wireless Network Name...look for the name of your 5 GHz network and make sure it is selected in the box
Check mark next to "Allow wireless clients"
Wireless Security...exact same setting as the AEBS
Wireless Password...exact same setting as the AEBS
Give that a try and keep the AX within 15-20 feet at first to see if it is extending. Then try a more remote location. I've found that unless I have close to "line-of-sight" at further distances between the AX and the AEBS, the AX will drop down to 2.4 GHz. That's because the 5 GHz signals are absorbed quickly and do not penetrate obstructions well.
    Any luck?

  • Airport Extreme 5GHz network connection failed

    Hi,
I have a PC, MBP mid-2012, Ipad, HTC One, Samsung S3, and Chromecast. I bought an airport extreme 3 weeks ago, and a Netgear AC usb wifi adapter to my PC. Until two days ago, everything worked fine. I had two networks with different names for the 2,4GHz and the 5GHz. I did i because it was the only way I found to get my gadgets and computers to connect on 5GHz. Otherwise, they all connected in 2.4GHz.
Two days ago, I could no longer connect by MBP nor the PC to the 5GHz network. The MBP sees it, but gives an error when I try to connect. The PC does not even see it. The Ipad and both android phones connect to the 5GHz with no issue.
I already tried to turn on and off the airport express, to disable the dual network and reconfigure it, and to specify a channel for it. No change. Can you please help me to understand what is happening and find a solution?
    Thanks a lot.

I believe it has something to do with securing the network as I'm now running an unsecured network and it not only stays up but it also seems a bit faster. I even ran the Airport Utility via ethernet and got it to "almost" configure but for some reason the setting never got implemented but at least I have internet access in my entire house. I thought it might be interference with some part of the house but it is indeed due to the latest firmware update for the AEB. Which I now call AE"BS". I tried my older Airport Express but I also couldn't get it to configure to now I'm not even sure if its firmware on the AEB or the Airport Utility that is messed up. Going tethered is not an option as I don't want to hunker down in a closet! Go unsecured and it might fix a lot of the issues we are seeing.

It's important that you have a steady WiFi connection, ZealousEdge. What phone do you have? Is your phone unable to connect to any WiFi network? If you can, please try deleting the saved WiFi network and re-adding it.

  • Any way to recover Pages documents on disabled, never-synced iPad Mini or connect it to network so Lost message will appear?

    Hi,
Apologies for the long post. For my three questions, please skip to the bold copy below. The first couple paragraphs are preamble.
Yesterday I unwittingly--and dimwittedly--disabled my 2012 iPad Mini by entering my password too many times. (Or rather my coat pocket and Bluetooth keyboard did it as I walked all over town, unaware of what they were up to. The activated keyboard in one pocket continually woke the sleeping iPad in my other pocket, the iPad kept demanding a password, and in the jostling I must have entered password after password. Finally it disabled because I'd set it to do so. I didn't know it was permanent though. I thought it would ask me to try again in a few hours. My oversight.)
I'm desperate to get my Pages documents off the iPad, which I've never backed up on iCloud or synced with iTunes. (My Macbook went belly up in July and I couldn't afford both a new computer and the more portable iPad--so I just bought the iPad and the Pages app.) Until December I was emailing myself the Pages manuscripts I was working on, but a few weeks ago I got lazy about this, and now I've lost a month's worth of work. I couldn't be madder at myself.
The Genius Bar gave me only the Erase/Restore option, which I can't bring myself to do. So I tried a couple third-party apps (Dr. Fone and Phone Unlocker) on my office iMac. But both require me to tell the iPad to "Trust this Mac" when the iPad shows the prompt--which the iPad doesn't do because it's completely disabled. The only words that ever appear onscreen are "iPad is disabled" and "Connect to iTunes."
So I'm scouring my brain for solutions:
    1) Is there any hope of re-enabling the iPad while preserving the data, maybe by starting a restore process in iTunes and aborting before data is erased? Then maybe the password field will show up again and I can type in the correct one?
    2) Or, even better, is there a way to connect the iPad to a network via the Lightning connector or even by taking it apart and hooking it up to something or other? (WiFi was on when I last used the iPad, though I don't have a cellular plan.) I ask because if I can get it online, then it will get the Lost iPad message I sent via Find My iPhone (in iCloud), and presumably the password field will show up on the iPad (along with my phone number), allowing me to enter the password once I've marked it as Found. But the iPad will only receive my message to it if it's connected to a network--which it can't do while disabled.
    3) Is there any chance that in the next few months or years someone will figure out a solution (maybe a better recovery software) that will let me access my documents again? I just can't delete them, even if it means putting it in a drawer and saving up for a new iPad.
Many, many thanks for any suggestions, no matter how outlandish. I'm desperate!

    Hi Brian
I had the same exact thing happen to me - except it was my wireless keyboard that disabled my ipad.  I also have documents on Pages that I did not want t to lose.  This worked for me!  Found it on another help site....I was able reactivate my ipad - nothing lost - all is good!
    1. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    2. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    3. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    4. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    5. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    6. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    7. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

My Mac Mini (Mid 2011) doesn't connect to Time Capsule in 5GHz Network. This WiFi Network don't appear in the WiFi list. What's Wrong?

Oh yes, & 5 GHz doesn't do walls very well at all.
    GHz and Network Range
The higher the frequency of a wireless signal, the shorter its range. Thus, 2.4 GHz networks cover a substantially larger range than 5 GHz wireless networks. In particular, the higher frequency wireless signals of 5 GHz networks do not penetrate solid objects nearly as well as do 2.4 GHz signals, limiting their reach inside homes.

Have you tried clearing Safari? Clear Safari, close Safari completely and reboot your iPad. Try again.
    Go to Settings>Safari>Cookies and Data.
If you are running iOS 5 or iOS 6 you close apps like this. Tap the home button once. Then tap the home button twice and the recents tray will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button twice.
If you are running iOS 7, you close apps this way. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Mobile network state "connecting" but never connects...help please?

    Hi,
When I try to turn on 3G data on my Fascinate, it never connects. Under settings/about phone/mobile network state it just says "connecting" but never connects, and the "3G" icon never appears in the top right corner of the phone. I've tried toggling the airplane mode, turning off, then turning back on and toggling airplane mode off, but it didn't work.
I was wondering why I haven't received the 2.3 OTA update yet, and I guess it's because my data is not working.
    Any suggestions?
thanks for any help you can give!

Not to make it sound simplistic, but have you pulled the battery out? Shut off phone, pull the battery for 30 seconds, put the battery back in, and then turn it on.

I am using several Macs running Yosemite. I was recently “upgraded” to Xfinity’s new cable modem which can support both 2.5Ghz and 5Ghz networks at the same time. Actually I can connect to the internet over both with a satisfactory bump in speed for the Ghz. However when I connect to the 5Ghz the Time capsule disappears from the Airport Utility and claims to be Not Found. Is there something I have done wrong or just a Yosemite Teething Problem

First restart your mac and try again.
    It could be
that the router and the TC are interfering wirelessly with each other.
You can check this by pressing the option key while clicking on the wireless icon on your screen
    Open Wireless Diagnostics
    enter your user password
    Press CMD 4 then Scan
You will see all the wireless channels being used in your location and you can check if they are on the same channel
Make the SSID for the TC simple like MyTC
    Set 5Ghz to auto
    Update the TC
    Try again

If no change after resetting network settings at Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings, try restoring your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from the backup.
If no change after that, your iPhone has a hardware problem.
