New DSL service and random disconnects

Hello, I just moved into a brand new house and had Verizon DSL installed a few days ago. Everything is brand new in the home, and even the neighborhood itself. I'm experiancing random disconnect from the internet. I have the Verizon DSL 3mps plan and the Westell 7500 wireless router/modem. All the lights on the modem stay green but the internet light will just go out. It won't flash or anything. It just loses it's connection. When I reboot the route/modem it will then reconnect to the internet. Sometimes it can stay connected for 12 hours other times it will disconnect every 15 minutes. The DLS light stays connected however the whole time. I have no phones/faxes/DVR's hooked into my phone jacks. The only device hooked into a phone jack is my modem. I lost the log files of my last disconnect when I rebooted the modem. If you need that I can post it later when it disconnects again. Here are some specs from the router:
Transceiver Information
Down Stream Path         Up Stream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec)             3360                                           864
Margin (dB)                                     20.4                                            6.0
Line Attenuation (dB)                26.0                                           11.5
Transmit Power (dBm)             7.8                                              5.0

Do you have a house alarm? The alarm uses the phone to dial out and needs a special filter installed at the alarm jack. (RJ31X)

  • New DSL service disconnects frequently

Bit on the $17.99 offer for 1mb DSL service. First time it was available in my area. Talked on phone around 20 July. Modem and filters arrived in about 5 days and startup day was 29 July.  Got an automated phone call saying man would come to house to do some checks between 8 am and 5 pm, but that he wouldn't need to come inside.  He never came because I live down a long lane and I watched all day for him. Installation using CD and instructions on my end went ok, and was soon online on 29th.  Westell modem 7500.
But, then found that my connection dropped regularly.  A couple of times it stayed on for 4 hours, but mostly it stays on 2-3 minutes and then is off for 2-3 minutes, etc.  Sometime it is off for hours at a time.  The service is not available when the green internet light goes out on the Westell modem.
So I call the 1-800-567-6789 Verizon number for help.  As you probably know it takes 20-30 minutes of phone time to wait before you talk to an actual person.  The recordings tell you that most problems solved by turning off and back on your modem, computer, etc.  As if we hadn't already done that multiple times already.  And the recordings tell you there is lots of help on various websites . . . as if you could get to those websites without having your DSL connection actually working for an extended period of time.
The help gal then tells me to do all the things I had already done, like turning off and on, etc.  She then says she ran some tests that show no problem.  Meanwhile the internet light on my modem is sometimes on and sometimes off.  But still no problem shows on her tests, she says.  Now the internet light has stayed on for maybe 10 minutes, so she says she is done because everything probably OK.  I tell her this is not uncommon that it stays on for 10 minutes or even a few hours, but eventually it always drops the connection.  She says she can't upgrade me to next level of help since it is my first call.  I say, you mean I have to call back tomorrow with the same problem.  She says, yes.
OK, next day same problems but I can't take the time to call so a day is burnt.
Third day the internet light stays on for 4 hours, so I am feeling pretty good.  But then the light goes out and I loose my connection at around 10:30 PM.  Too late for me to start a call, so another day is burnt.
Fourth day, yesterday, mostly a repeat of previous day, so at around 8 PM, I call the 1-800 number again.  Go through the same 20-30 minutes of wait time with suggestions to turn off and on everything, go to websites, etc.
Got a gal in Phillipines.  Pretty good English and very pleasant.  She says there is no record of my first call, so this is really my first call.  However, after I complain about that, she talks to her supervisor and he/she says they can upgrade m to next level of help.
So she tells me a tech expert will start testing my line.  After 15-20 minutes she tells me there is a problem with my modem 'authenticating' so they will send me a new modem.  But I remember reading another thread here by a guy who got 3 Westell modems and still had problems . . . . so I am not overly hopeful about the outcome for me either.  Why does Verizon stick with a modem that is known to have multiple problems??
Anyway, I was on the phone with Verizon that time for close to an hour and a half.
Next day, which is today, my wife fields an automated call from Verizon which says they are going to send a tech to our house and for her to punch in some numbers, which she can't do because she doesn't know what time I want.  The recording gives her an 1-800 number to call back to schedule the time.
I am floored when I see the number is actually 1-800-567-6789, because I know what hell is waiting for me when I call that number.  And I have to go through this hell just to reply to a call from Verizon which asks me to call them back to schedule the appointment.  But that number has nothing to do with scheduling appointments.
So I call the 1-800 and go through the same **bleep** as before with all the recorded helpful hints about turning off and on, go to websites for help etc.  But I am simply trying to reply to a call from Verizon to set up the techs time to come.
Then the recordings finally get to the point where I punch the 1 if I still need to talk to a person.  Have been on the line already about 10 minutes.  The voice says the wait time will be less than 5 minutes.  15 minutes later I am still getting the news that my wait time will be less than 5 minutes.
Finally a guy from India answers.  I have now been on the phone for close to 25 minutes waiting for this real person.
He starts telling me to turn off and on my modem, etc.  I tell him I am just replying to call from Verizon to set up the time for tech to come to my house.  He tells me I have called the wrong number.  I tell him it was the number the recording said to call.  He says he will try to transfer me.  I panic.  He then tells me when he talks to another dept they tell him there is no record of my ever having called with any problems.  I yell at him.  He talks some more to someone on another line and reports that they actually now find that I have called before . . . in fact just last night.
OK, so now he tells me he will transfer me to the person who will help with the appointment.  But this new gal asks me what lights are showing on my modem.  I say, what does that matter and how is it relevant to scheduling the guy to come.  And anyway, I don't have the modem turned on because I think that is not a good idea to leave it on all the time.
She insists that I must turn on the modem and . . . for first time that anyone at Verizon has ever told me . . . she says I should leave it on constantly until the problem is solved.  This apparently is because the tech people might be trying to do some tests on my line even before they arrive at my house.  OK, so I turn it on and the green internet light does not go on during the rest of our conversation.
So she schedules the tech to come to my house next Thursday, 6 August.  I ask what time he will arrive.  She straight faced (I presume) said I must wait there all day 8 am to 5 pm.  I ask her if she doesn't realize the absurdity of this.  She will only comment that that is the way Verizon does it.
I then ask her if she doesn't also recognize the absurdity of the 40 minutes I have spent on the phone, being cycled around, when I was only returning a call from Verizon to schedule an appointment.  She gives a nonsensical answer, so I repeat the facts.  Now she does admit that it is probably not fair and there should be a better number to call rather than the general 1-800 number for this situation.  I ask her if they ever talk about these absurd situations and poor customer service things at staff meetings or with their supervisors.  She doesn't answer that question, instead asking me if there is anything else she can do for me today.  I say that yes, there is something else, and that is to answer my question about what the staff meetings have to say about these absurd situations and what do her supervisors say about it.
    {please keep it relevant}

#1 Check the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, and DNS Servers on your computer.
This means for example if you are on Windows XP...
    a) Go to Start -> Run.
    b) Type in
    cmd
    and press enter.
    c) In the new window, called the command prompt, type in
    ipconfig /all
    and press enter.
#2 With your web browser go to the default gateway.
#3 Enter in the current user name and password of the router.
    The default User Name is
    admin
    and the password is
    password.
Thanks dslr.  OK, I did what you said and found the default gateway was  192.168.1.1
When I went to that place on my browser, there was no place for User Name or Password.
But under the column 'Gateway Status' I saw:
    Download:  1181 Kbps
    Upload:         447 Kbps
    Connect Type:  PPPoE
So how does this info help in my problem of frequent disconnects?
Or did I still not get to the place you wanted me to go?
    Thanks much.

  • Disconnects on Accessing HH and Random Disconnects...

System is BT HH Ver 2.0 Type B with Firefox v.3.6.13
On a number of occasions I have found random disconnects in the event log and disconnects when I go to access the HH and type in my password, when the BB light goes out and then the yellow comes on and it begins the reconnect sequence.   These are shown in the Log, but it doesn't seem to make any obvious change to the line synch rate.

The events at 20:02 and 22:55 were caused by my accessing the HH and typing in my password.   The others were random disconnects - the HH has not been switched off for some days and the computer was only switched on aorund 15:00 hrs.
The line synch rate at 23:12 is
    Downstream    10,134 Kbps
    Upstream    1,078 Kbps
The changes to the Noise Margin/Attneuation and Power are very minor fractions of a dB from previous checks.  The line is quiet.  Distance to the Crowthorne exchnage is ca 966m.
I have even had disconnects using IE 6.0 on Feb 3.
Does anybody else get these effects?   Is it a faulty HH?   Is it some interference on the line?
This looks similar to the problem under "home hub keeps resetting" from "technobaz" today

Further to the saga of disconnects shown by my HH2 Events Log I have had helpful support from Forum
Moderators.   They arranged for OpenReach technician to call again subsequent to the 25 Feb visit on 9
March.    The Moderators could still see my line problems from their site (where ever that is!).   I have had
the HH2 Type B powered on for over two months (to ensure line stability) and the line Down Rate has
    gradually reduced
    17 Jan 2011     Downstream    11,347 Kbps      Upstream    828 Kbps
            Noise margin (Down/Up)    14.8 dB / 12.6 dB
            Line attenuation (Down/Up)    27.0 dB / 11.9 dB
    9 Mar 2011    Downstream    1,151 Kbps     Upstream    1,078 Kbps
             Noise margin (Down/Up)    27.9 dB / 8.0 dB
            Line attenuation (Down/Up)    26.7 dB / 11.8 dB
the ADSL statistics had varied slightly over the period and the Event Log typically showed disconnects with
    the text, e.g.
    Feb 2 06:13:45 2011    (112240.430000) danube_dsl_ioctl:73: Failed ioctl 270 errno 22

My line still showed the disconnects.    I also tried my neighbour's HH2 Type A for 24 hrs on 7/8 Mar for
comparison.  He was getting no disconnects on his line.   The Type A Event Log  showed on the 8 Mar my
line disconnects, albeit in a slightly different set of "text language" to the Type B -  so it was not a router
    problem!

On the 9 Mar visit, OpenReach made a series of comprehensive tests isolating the house/manhole line,
checking equipment in the exchange and green street interface box/exchange line.   My house line (some
10m) was showing good insulation resistance and similarly the box/exchange line a very high insulation
resistance.   The value surprised me, but a Google check shows a value of 10000 Mohms/km may be
    typical.
However, somewhere between the green box and my pavement manhole the insulation resistance was low.
I am now awaiting for the bad section to be located and my present twisted pair to exchanged for a good
pair.   I hope after a few days the Line Synch Rate may get back to the original values.

  • I just signed up for the New REVEL service and I need to know How do I download it to my Computer?

i currently use ADOBE PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 9 to Download and Edit my Photos from my Camera.
Now, I just signed up (under the Monthly Plan) for the New REVEL Service. How do I Download it to my Computer.
My Computer uses the WINDOWS 8 Operating System.
    HELP,
    TOBY

    Hi Toby
Welcome to Adobe Revel! You do not need to download anything right now. Currently on a PC you access Revel via adoberevel.com on a web browser.
Here are some useful links for you that might speed up the learning curve. They show you how to do things in the browser version as well as Mac and iOS. PC users can not edit using adoberevel.com. The apps include editing. Since Elements versions prior to version 11 do not connect to Revel, you can save to your hard drive and upload to Revel from there.
You can sign up to be notified when a Revel app is available for Windows and Android by going to http://www.photoshop.com/products/revel ….scroll down and look on the right side where it says "coming soon- Notify me" for windows or android. Click and you can sign up to be notified.
In the coming months, we will expand Revel onto new platforms, devices, and file formats.

  • Mac needs a new battery, servicing and wiping.

    Hi Guys,
My old Mac needs a new battery as it is literally on its last legs, it also needs to be serviced and wiped as I no longer use it. Im going to take it to the genius bar to get this done.
However before doing this I am looking at saving all of my itunes folders and emails onto a hard drive. I understand how to do my Itunes but not too sure regarding emails? any help with this would be appreciated it is a Microsoft Exchange address if that helps.
Also do you think I could get the battery replaced first then save my things and then book another appointment to get it serviced and wiped. As I have never used the genius bar before
    Thanks in advance.

If you have a MacBook with the removable battery you can get a new third party battery fairly cheap on eBay. Every MacBook from 2006 through Mid 2009 except the Late 2008 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 and 2010 White Unibodies use the same A1185 battery.

    Hello,
I have just updated to iso7 and had to make a call lastnight.
during the call the iphone (5) made a high pitched odd sound and then went silent and then disconnected me, i called back and again it happened during my call.
this happened a total of 3 times...
    please help...

    any one?

  • I have a new SIM/service and want to transfer all my contacts from the current 4S to the new SIM in my old 3GS.  I do NOT want to backup/restore the entire phone contents (iTunes or iCloud), JUST the contacts.  How?

Current phone 4S with service from one provider.  Also have a new SIM with another provider, and want to copy my contacts from the 4S across to my old 3GS which I will be using for a bit as an alternative.  Definitely do not want anything except the contacts copied across so a full backup/restore is NOT what I'm after, and I can't see (in the iTunes backup) how to only do the contacts.

Sorry, my bungle - from what devices I am used to - these Apple things still have me confused at times.
The core requirement is the same - to get the contacts from the 4S onto the 3GS without backing up the whole device/apps etc.
And a second part of that is how to get the contacts onto a SIM for a device that DOES store them there.  No doubt that will be a problem as it only has name/number combos, not all the fruit the iPhone keeps under a contact.  Maybe it can't done.  A simple export to CSV or something that could be edited would suffcie if there were an import tool to get it onto the SIM in the simpler format.

  • Need help! New internet service and now some web sites won't load

I just switched from Comcast cable internet to qwest DSL. I use Safari for my browser and my wife uses Firefox. I cannot get past the login portion of these sites:
    flickr.com (or any yahoo-related site)
    usbank.com
apple.com discussion forums (I'm on my PC-based laptop posting this)
Being that all of my PC-based laptops can access these sites just fine, I know it has something to do with the Mac.
First, I've emptied and cleared all my caches, deleted all cookies, reset both browsers, restarted my computer about 10 times and still cannot get past the login portion of the sites listed. I can get to the first page, but then when I go to login, it freezes up.
Had this problem with facebook at first too, but after doing what I talked about above (resetting everything), I was able to log into facebook.
Any suggestions? I'm at my wits end.
Just as an FYI, I had no problems accessing these sites with my cable internet modem.
Oh, I'm also using Safari 5.0.3 and firefox 3.6.13 (have the same problem with both of these browsers on my mac).

    Hi,
    Try repairing permissions.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done.
If you see any warnings re: SUID messages, they can be safely ignored, information here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US

Restart your Mac. If that didn't help, go to Safari / Preferences - Autofill. Make sure *User names and passwords* is selected. Now open Keychain Access. (Applications/Utilities). Select Passwords on the left. Delete all keychains related to the sites you have problems logging in.
Relaunch Safari and try those sites. You should be prompted to save the login data to a new keychain. If that didn't help, login to another user account. Launch Safari. If you see the same problems there, then log back into your admin account, launch Disk Utility. Select MacintosHD in the panel on the left then select the FirstAid tab.
If Disk Utility reports, you will have to boot from your install disc to make repairs, instructions here.

  • New dsl member and loads of ?'s

But I would only ask a couple for now. I had to buy my modem from Verizon....why does Verizon charge for this modem and if I decide not to stick as a member, do I gert reimbursed? Also, I was told that this modem also has a wireless connection in it, so I do not need to use my personal router. Well, I unhooked the cable of my router which was plugged into my modem and my other laptop could not get on line. I replugged the cable and sure enough I was able to get on line with my laptop, but the modem is plugged into my desktop...so where is the benefit of the verizon as a modem, wireless and router?

If Verizon sent you a wireless DSL modem/router it gets plugged into the phone line, electrical outlet and all hard wired computers into the Ethernet ports on the back. All wireless connections need to be changed to the new SSID and security settings before they will be able to connect. You do not get reimbursed for the modem/router. If you bought it you own it.

  • I use Firefox as my browser. I have Norton 360 Premier and my Windows firewall is off. Yet I experience frequent and random disconnects from the Internet. How do I prevent these actions? H. C.

I use Time Warner for ISP and do not have wireless features. The modem appears to have a live link even when Firefox indicates the internet connection has disconnected. The signal strength has been checked by T-W. further, this problem predates my use of Time Warner cable and in a different geographic location.
When I attempt to reestablish the connection I get the error message that Firefox is not responding. When I restart or reboot from a shutdown the connection can always be made.
sometimes the disconnect occurs very soon and sometimes hours later. Help!

Symantec have released an update for Norton 360 to make it compatible with Firefox 4, for details see http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20100720113635EN&ln=en_US

  • Very slow broadband speed and random disconnection...

I have a problem with my home hub and broadband connection. The download speed is ridiculously low at only 768 kbits per second. I have been running speed tests all week and the speed has been getting gradually slower and slower starting at around 1.4mbits and lowering to between 0.4 and 0.8 mbps. The broadband is also losing connection every so often.
This has been happening for a few weeks now, ever since the broadband and phone lights on my Hub turned orange, then continually flashed orange, went green then went off and then back to orange, flashed orange, then green then off and this cycle repeated until I restarted my Hub. Upon restarting the power light turned solid red and did not change. So I restarted it again. This time it rebooted properly (or so it seems to have). Before this the hub was (still slow) around 2mbps although this was much better than the speed now.
I have a BT home hub version 1.5. I am on Bt Broadband option 3 meaning I should have unlimited broadband. Reason why I am asking for help is I am getting lag when ever I play games on My xbox 360 or browse on my laptop.  Im in scotland, dundee in the DD2 post code area if that matters.
I have not tried plugging directly into the main telephone socket yet but as I have been using BT for well over 4 years and not had as little speed as this Im doubtful its due to interferance.
Any help would be fantastic. I just want to be able to play my **bleep** xbox again
Here is the DSL information. I have recently restarted my Hub (due to the broadband cutting out again). This is why the uptime is so low.

Quick update: Well, I moved my hub and have plugged it into the master test socket... Couldn't connect at all wirelessly, so I had to phone up the BT helpline, they changed the wireless channel and I got on after that (however the assistant said that my plugging into the socket should not have disabled the wireless.) As for the speed, well, needless to say there is little to no improvement. I cannot post my DSL stats, as I cannot even connect to my home hub via the ip address and the bthomehub.home address as the connection times out.
The speedtester on the other hand is working. Here are those results:
    1. Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
    Download Speed
    409 Kbps
    0 Kbps
    500 Kbps
    Max Achievable Speed
Download speedachieved during the test was - 409 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 100-500 Kbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :4704 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 500 Kbps
The throughput of Best Efforts (BE) classes achieved during the test is - 8.62:28.39:63.06 (SBE:NBEBE)
These figures represent the ratio while sententiously passing Sub BE, Normal BE and Priority BE marked traffic.
The results of this test will vary depending on the way your ISP has decided to use these traffic classes.
    2. Upstream Test: -provides background information.
    Upload Speed
    307 Kbps
    0 Kbps
    448 Kbps
    Max Achievable Speed
    >Upload speed achieved during the test was - 307 Kbps
     Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 448 Kbps
I have noticed that the DSL downstream speed has shot up remarkably (by about 4000) since plugging it in to the test socket, but for some reason, the IP profile is still very low, I would have expected it to have went up at least a little but it has remained the same for the past 2 days now should I be concerned with this or give it some more time?
Oh and I have an engineer coming to the house on friday, turns out when my parents were installing the broadband accelerator they inadvertently knocked out the wires to the extensions and now none of the extensions in the house are working so I hope he or she can resolve things with my speed and I will update on Friday evening, and again next Wednesday(after the 5 day period) to see if the IP profile speed has improved.

  • WRT350N - version and random disconnects?

Is it true that WRT350N disconnects a lot, i.e. cannot hold connection? How can you tell which version it is BEFORE buying it? thanks,

The version no. is mentioned on the router( at the bottom).
I intend to buy it but I've heard so many bad things so now I hesitate to buy this brand. Which version should I look for? And if I can influence it as vendors sell whatever they have and don't have time to disclose these details. Thanks,

  • New DSL... ichat dropping out

Hi all I just installed my new DSL service and now iChat and AIM are both dropping service right in the middle of typing a chat. To recover I have to quit the application and relaunch it. Then it works again for a few minutes
    Any ideas on a solution?
    Thanks
    Damien

    The modem handles the PPPoE
I only found out that it WAS using PPPoE late last night when I went into the modem setup (192.16blah.blah.blah) and started fiddling with some stuff. Turns out that it was set to get a new IP every 10 minutes and it was set to 'Smart Keep Alive' whatever that means. I changed these to 24 hours and 'always on' So far this morning I have not had iChat drop off and surfing seems to have a better reaction time.
Thanks all for pointing me in the right direction. Now I am off to read Ralph's link.
