New iPad mini 2 : should I update to OS8 or leave 7?

I bought an iPad Mini 2 yesterday (32 gig) : running well so far (apart from terrible available memory allocation ... but I will post about this separately). the question I have , do I upgrade to OS8? - I am tempted to leave 7 - my iPhone 5c performance and battery is terrible since putting 8 on - many blogs complain / similar issues - my iPad 2 64 gig has been destroyed performance wise by 8 - why was my NEW iPad loaded with 7 and not 8 ... Maybe 7 better (or is my mini retina not that new and been sitting in a warehouse for 6 months) So ....
Should I install 8 or leave 7.1.2 ?

I have an iPad mini 2 purchased last year that remained on iOS 7.x for quite awhile after iOS 8 was released. I always wait for at least a x.1 release for before updating. when iOS 8.1 was released, I updated that iPad with no issues whatsoever.
I also purchased an additional mini 2 a couple of weeks ago and updated that device with iOS 8.1 as well, again with no issues.
Those are my personal experiences...update if you'd like (I'd say it's safe) but remember that you cannot backdate to iOS 7.x after making the jump.
In addition, if you decide to STAY at iOS 7.x, do NOT restore your iPad for any reason *using iTunes* as it will be updated to the most current iOS version your device qualifies for (iOS 8.1 currently). If you must restore the device, do so on the device itself under Settings/General/Reset/Erase All Content and Settings. This will retain the iOS version that is currently on the device.

Contrary to the opinion above, I see no reason whatsoever why you can't set up the new iPad from the backup of the old one. Obviously you will have app updates to make and complete and that sort of thing, but if you want to retain all of your app data and device settings (some of which will change because of the updated iOS), I would certainly restore from the backup first.
If you find that to be problematic, you can always start all over again.

  • ITunes DID recognize new iPad mini, error when updating, now doesn't. Please help. I have a 700 dollar paperweight now.

Today I bought a brand new iPad mini 2, 32 gb. First, I backed up my old ipad mini to my hard drive. Then, I updated iTunes to the newest version. Then, I plugged in the new iPad mini, went through the set up, iTunes was working fine. I registered the iPad, then it suggested i update the iOS on the iPad. This is where things went south. After a few minutes, it stated "cannot update iOS 7 at this time" or something to that effect. Since that point, iTunes will not recognize the iPad. The iPad shows the "connect to iTunes" screen. When I plug it in, I hear the tone suggesting a new device is connected, but nothing happens. I've tried it in DFU mode, no results. I've tried putting it in recovery mode, nothing happens, just the same screen. I've uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it, following every step suggested through this site/apple support. I even uninstalled and installed an older version of iTunes (10.7) but same result. I've followed all troubleshooting steps, and nothing is working, so please don't suggest the same olf "iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows" page.
What should I do? Do I have to take this to the geniuses at the store? Will they even be able to help without having access to my computer?

  • HT1222 Hi there just bought new iPad mini and can't get iOS 7 to update on it???

Help can't seem to update my new iPad mini to IOS 7 x

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 7.0.2. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.
How to Upgrade to iOS 7
The iOS 7.0 update requires around 2.5 GB of storage space, so if your iPad is almost full, you may need to clear up some space. You can check your available space in Settings -> General -> Usage.
There are two ways to upgrade to iOS 7: You can use your Wi-Fi connection, or you can connect your iPad to your PC and update through iTunes. We'll go over each method.
    To upgrade using Wi-Fi:
Note: If your iPad's battery is under 50%, you will want to plug it into your charger while performing the update.
        1.    Go into the iPad's Settings.
        2.    Locate and tap "General" from the menu on the left.
        3.    The second option from the top is "Software Update". Tap this to move into the update settings.
        4.    Tap "Download and Install". This will start the upgrade, which will take several minutes and will reboot your iPad during the process. If the Download and Install button is grayed out, trying clearing up some space. The space required by the update is mostly temporary, so you should gain most of it back after iOS 7 is installed.
        5.    Once the update is installed, you may have to run through the initial steps of setting up your iPad again. This is to account for new features and settings.
    To upgrade using iTunes:
First, connect your iPad to your PC or Mac using the cable provided when you purchased your device. This will allow iTunes to communicate with your iPad.
You will also need the latest version of iTunes. Don't worry, you will be prompted to download the latest version when you launch iTunes. Once it installs, you may be asked to setup iCloud by logging into your iTunes account. If you have a Mac, you may be prompted on whether or not you want to enable the Find my Mac feature.
Now you are ready to begin the process:
        1.    If you upgraded iTunes earlier, go ahead and launch it. (For many, it will launch automatically when you plug in your iPad.)
        2.    Once iTunes is launched, it should automatically detect that a new version of the operating system exists and prompt you to upgrade to it. Choose Cancel. Before updating, you will want to manually sync your iPad to make sure everything is up to date.
        3.    After canceling the dialog box, iTunes should automatically sync with your iPad.
        4.    If iTunes doesn't automatically sync, you can manually do it by selecting your iPad within iTunes, clicking on the File menu and choosing Sync iPad from the list.
        5.    After your iPad has been synced to iTunes, select your iPad within iTunes. You can find it on the left side menu under Devices.
        6.    From the iPad screen, click on the Update button.
        7.    After verifying that you want to update your iPad, the process will begin. It takes a few minutes to update the operating system during which time your iPad may reboot a few times.
        8.    After updating, you may be asked a few questions when your device finally boots back up. This is to account for new settings and features.

  • HT5625 I want my new iPad mini to use my new Apple ID, not the old one that pops up without seemingly giving me the choice to update the  Apple ID user name; as a result I haven't been able to update my APPS for some time.

I want my new iPad mini to use my new Apple ID, not the old one that pops up without seemingly giving me the choice to update the  Apple ID user name; as a result I haven't been able to update my APPS for some time. I changed my apple ID when I got a new e mail address a few months ago .

Any apps you have installed from the old AppleID will always be tied to that AppleID. You have no choice but to enter the password for the old AppleID if you want to update apps downloaded using that ID.
The only way to stop being asked for the password for the old AppleID is to remove all apps from the device that were downloaded using that old AppleID.
You'd then need to re-download (and re-purchase) any apps you want to keep using under the new AppleID.
Apps cannot be transferred between AppleIDs.

I have bought a new iPad mini. its not showing me Facetime Installed. How should I start a Facetime ?

Where did you buy it? facetime is barred from devices sold in some countries, due to the countries insisting upon it. UAE and other middle eastern countries are examples.
If you bought your iPad in a country that banns its use then you'll never have facetime on that device. It's locked out at the most basic level.

  • Restore new iPad Mini from iPad 1 backup. Ican update new apps from Apple store but most of my apps have been showing the Waiting status for over 12 hours. Store shows them as installed. What gives?

Restore new iPad Mini from iPad 1 backup. Ican update new apps from Apple store but most of my apps have been showing the Waiting status for over 12 hours. Store shows them as installed. What gives?

If the downloads are stalled or "waiting" - try these suggestions.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Make sure that you do not have a stalled download in iTunes - a song or podcast .... if you have a download in there that did not finish, complete that one first. Only one thing can download at a time on the iPad so that could be what is causing the problem.
If that doesn't work - sign out of your account, restart the iPad and then sign in again.
Settings>iTunes & App Store>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Go back to Settings>iTunes & App Store>Sign in and then try to update again. Tap one waiting icon only if necessary to start the download stream.
You can also try deleting the waiting icons - tap and hold down on an icon until it wiggles - the tap the X on the icon to delete it. Then try to download again.
You can try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your app preferences and device settings again.
If all else fails, download the updates or the apps in iTunes on your computer and then sync the content to your iPad.

  • New iPad mini is not recognized by my Mac.  Is asking for an iTunes update to 10.7, but Mac says system is up to date at the iTunes version we have.  iPad mini just not recognized without the updated iTunes,  HELP

The kids have 3 new iPad minis for Xmas, but our Mac will not recognize the devices when we connect the minis to it.  The Mac/iPad says it needs a newer version of iTunes, but the Mac says that it has the latest version of iTunes. The kids can't transfer their music, books, photos, etc from the Mac, where everything is centrally stored, to their new minis. :(. Can any one help?

What itunes version do you have?
What Mac OS version do you have?
From the ipad mini box and web page:
Apple ID (required for some features)
    Internet access6
Syncing with iTunes on a Mac or PC requires:

Question. Why can I print from my iPad 3 but not from my new iPad mini which has a lower spec?

  • HT4859 I got a new iPad mini and It said that I didn't have anything in my iCloud backup but I had all 800 of my pictures on it. How do I get them back?

I got a new iPad mini and It said that I didn't have anything in my iCloud backup but I had all 800 of my pictures on it. How do I get them back?

The new one must have been in inventory for a while or it would have the latest iOS.
To update it, connect it to your computer and open iTunes.  You may be prompted by iTunes that a newer version is available; if so, choose Download and Install to update it to iOS 6.1.3.
If you don't get this prompt, click on the name of your phone in iTunes, then click on the Summary tab at the top.  On the Summary tab, click Check for Update.  You should then be prompted that there is an update available and you can update your iPad.
After updating, as mentioned in the posts above, set it up as a new iPad, eject it from iTunes and disconnect it from your computer, then go to Settings>General>Reset, tap Erase All Content and Settings, go back through the setup screens on the iPad and when given the option, choose Restore from iCloud Backup.  You should now be able to choose your backup to restore from.  Be sure your iPad is connected to wifi and your charger as this may take some time to finish.

  • Setting up a new iPad Mini

I got my new iPad mini yesterday and attempted to set it up using my existing iPad back-up on iTune. I have set up many different apple devices previously, (new iPhones, iPads, iPods, etc) and they have always worked wonderfully.
But when I did it with my new Mini yesterday, some of the data, like notes on Noteshelf and Movies on AVPlayer were not updated. I could see them on my old iPad, but they did not appear on the new iPad. The Mail accounts were also all gone and I had to set them up all over again. The Apps Folders were also all gone leaving all my Apps in multiple pages and I had to redo all the Folders... etc.
Has anyone experienced the same problem?
Also, can someone kindly tell me how to delete photos on the Photos App? Can't figure out how to do this. Is it even possible?
    Thanks!

Good question - I suspect it will but can't be sure.
When I set up my iPad Mini earlier it asked me if I wasnted to set up as new or restore from my iPhone 4S backup.
Clearly the iPad isn't a phone - presumably it would just migrate relevant settings/apps/photos.
My youngsters are currently playing tug of war with the new iPad Mini - I knew I should have bought two - they fit in one hand very nicely for adults and seem even better for small hands.
Only need to find a minimalist case now to stop the back scratching.
Can't believe Apple are charging the same for the cover as they do for the full size iPad.
