New Mail user

Hi
I've just upgraded to 10.5 and cannot send messages in Eudora - have spent hours reading forums and it seems that many people think it's over and gone, not worth spending time to get it working - and the 8 beta is completely different coding. Looked at Thunderbird, but I want to be able to thread answers between questions in different colours, bold etc and it doesn't seem to allow that unless using HTML, which I don't want to do. So I'm trying Mail, but have two basic problems I can't find answers to:
Is it possible to deepen the Inbox window? It shows only about 11 emails, which is driving me mad - I can't see at a glance all the emails that have come in during a day and know whether I have dealt with them.
And when I select an incoming email it immediately opens, meaning I can't delete emails unread, which really won't do! This can't be how it is set to work, as contravenes advice not to open emails if they look suspicious.
I've been using Eudora since 1996 and am lost without it. All help gratefully received! Thanks
Clara

+OK, Control + click = Right click+
Aaahh! Well, I've only been using a Mac since 1988! Paid a One to One sub to the local Apple Store to do data transfer to new computer, but also thought the one-hour sessions might be useful as I only find out what I need to do and never explore to discover what else might be available that I never even knew existed. Guy in the store splitting the screen into four prompted that.
+What happens with yours in Leo exactly?+
It won't send - I just get the queueing symbol. Tried in both 6.2.3 and 6.2.4 and got the same result. So many different solutions offered in the forums, people still struggling, others saying that Snow Leopard will be here shortly and finish it off altogether so I thought it may be better to find something else rather than waste time on something shortlived. Oddly, in 6.2.3 in OSX 10.4 I never did find my in and out boxes - people on the forum were offering other bewildered enquirers two different places where they would be, but neither worked for me and a Spotlight search for Eudora never came up with the folder containing the in and out boxes. The Eudora settings, address book etc didn't make it through the data transfer, and neither did the vast emails boxes - the only solution I can see is to go back to the old tower (2001, both customers and staff in the store were saying 'Look at that!' fondly as if to an Austin 30 spotted on the motorway - except that that would be 50-odd years old, not eight . . .), open every email and mail myself those I really want to keep. Which is not a bad exercise in clearing out, except that I have work to do (the details of which are, I fervently hope, still in the more recent emails in the old tower). At least I can find the Eudora mailboxes created since Friday in Leopard.
If Mail is your least favourite option, which is your most favourite one? I'm concerned by the threads on this forum of Mail incoming mail just disappearing. Maybe I should phone Demon support tomorrow and see if I can get Eudora sending in the hope that it will survive Snow Leopard in spite of what people are saying.
Have a nice Sunday. Think I'll sow some salad seeds to distract myself from throwing all four Macs out of the window. Thanks very much for your help.

  • New Mail User; Several features different from entourage

Just switched from Entourage to Mail on my new Macbook. There are a few conveniences on Entourage that I couldn't find on Mail.
When reading an open message, there is not immediate way to go to next or previous message; have to close the open message, switch to upper pane to highlight new message and then open it. In entourage you could just press next or previous and open the next message in sequence.
I'm not sure how to format my outgoing messages. In entourage you can specify the width of the email; I don't see how to do it in Mail; it seems to depend on size of the window the new message is in. Is there a way to specify the width of a message?
While organizing my incoming mail, I use the "move to" command under the message heading; message goes to correct folder but a copy also remains in the inbox. If I repeat same command immediately, the inbox message is gone but I have two copies in the folder where I sent it.
    Thanks for any help.

I've been thinking of making the switch but when I tried it under Tiger, Apple Mail did not import the links between messages. For example, I can look at an email in Entourage and tell if I replied. I can click a link and view the reply. Not so in previous Apple Mail.

There isn't a way directly in Mail.

  • User not able to download new mail

I have a user that is unable to fetch new mail as of Oct 10. Nothing has changed on his computer. He can view new emails on webmail/iphone, just not on his computer. The iphone has the same exact config as his computer.
I have trashed his mail's plist and re-input configurations. Still not downloading new mail.
He has 14000+ emails, but I don't think that's the limitation.
    Any other suggestions?

Try going to Home/Library/Mail/<Account Folder> and deleting the MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded2 file; then restart Mail and see if that resolves the issue.

  • Subscribing to new mail event of multiple impersonated user through one ExchangeService object

I am able to subscribe to push notifications by specifying impersonating users' credentials and then specifying impersonated user's email in ExchangeService' ImpersonatedUserId property.
However want to know how can I handle new email events on multiple email ids that are impersonated by one email id, since there is no collection as such on ExchangeService to specify multiple Impersonation Ids. In fact I think we can handle only one email
id by using single ExchangeService object. And to subscribe to multiple user mail events, even through impersonation, I have to create multiple instances of ExchangeService. And also multiple callback listeners too. This is what I want confirmation about:
    Q. Do I need to create multiple instances of ExchangeService and callback listeners to handle new mail event on multiple user id with impersonation?
    Q. Without impersonation?
    Q. Also want to know given credentials of impersonating user, can I retrieve list of all users impersonated by that user.

    > Without impersonation?
You don't need a separate instance in this case (you need separate subscriptions for each mailbox). However there are throttling limitations around the total number of subscriptions one particular user can make see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/office/dn458788(v=exchg.150).aspx
    For
subscribing to mailbox of same user id, we can use same object of ExchangeService. However I did asked for subscribing to mailboxes of
different user ids (or simply multiple mailboxes) without impersonation.
I cannot find how can I specify credentials for multiple mailboxes on single instance of ExchangeServer. Just following:
    service.Credentials = new WebCredentials(userid, password);
Is it really possible to use same instance ExchangeService to subscribe to multiple mailboxes?

  • 700p suddenly gives invalid user/password message when trying to get new mail

My Yahoo Mail Plus account is working fine. When I use versamail on the Palm Treo 700p to retrieve emails from my active Yahoo account, I get "-ERR(Auth)invalid user/password" message. I can access my Yahoo Mail account from the "Web" app on my treo.
So it is definitely a VersaMail issue. This happened after it had been getting new mail (and sending) successfully.
    Can anyone help?
Post relates to: Treo 700p (Verizon)

unfortunately Yahoo and their Branded contracts just don't work as advertised and neither the ISPs Nor Yahoo appear in the slightest bit interested.
If you delete the popstate.dat file in the profile folder in the yahoo server directory, it will restart the download again from the top (Everything)
You might also find that disabling email scanning in your anti virus program may be beneficial. (Could it be McAfee?)
The majority of RETR complaints here are from ATT and BT users, both of whom get McAfee given in by their ISP.

  • POP users cant see new mail on OSX 10.5 Server

    Hi All,
I have just upgraded my 10.4 server to 10.5. I had to do a clean install due to some problems with the upgrade. My problem is, most of my POP3 users can not see any mail. The mail is being collected and can be accessed with the users login details via web mail. When the user login in using Outlook, it checks and finishes as if there is no new mail.
If the user reconfigures their mail client to IMAP is work just fine, but IMAP is not good for some of my users needs.
I found that there are no error messages at the user end, or on the server logs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks for reading.

    Hi Hamish,
I have exactly the same problem with some POP3 users that use as mail client Microsoft Outlook 2003 and 2007. Up to now I don't have problem with Apple and Linux clients. I found out that users in which the alias differ from the shortname in the Open Directory record (which is the first shortname and mailbox identity) can't see the incoming Mail. For example, if the first shortname is user0001 and the alias is tony, I set [email protected] as the email address and user0001 as the User Name in the login information of Microsoft Outlook Configuration.
    Thank you,
    Tony Mendoza-Rosa

  • 2.2 fixed fetching for me, but 'new mail' sound/vibration remains an issue.

I'm interested in finding out how many of you have found that mail fetching is now perfectly reliable but you're still not getting the 'new mail' alert...
I did a full restore and found that when the mail account was first reinstated, it chimed/vibrated correctly. However, subsequent mail deliveries are silent.
So restoring, unfortunately, still doesn't make it work. The fact that the 'new mail' slider is set to 'on' and 'vibrate' doesn't make it work.
Anyone else? 2.2.1, maybe? Anyway, we're making progress, so I'm really happy about that!

    AndreTheGeek:
Yep, same here. I held off celebrating, but fetching/notifications worked great on Friday and Saturday, then Sunday afternoon, I noticed mail showing up on my phone without audible notifications. Turned it off, back on, no dice. Hard reset, no luck. Reset the network settings, and it fired back up again. Great!
This morning when I woke up, it had quit again, but seemingly due to a different problem. This time fetching was hung - when I would go to a particular mail account (I have 3: one push, one IMAP, one POP) the phone show "connecting" with the spinning wheel. Then it would show "updated" but the date was from last night, and the data transmitting indicator up at the top (to the right of the 3g) would keep on spinning forever. Turning off/on and hard resetting did not fix, resetting the network settings fixed it (again). So, give it a shot, just remember that when you do, it turns wifi back on, so you will need to turn that off if you do not want it chewing up your battery.
In the end, I would not worry too much - I am sure that this is just an isolated occurrence affecting only and handful of users. No doubt Apple is secretly working on a fix that they will release in two months, just as soon as the upgrade the iTunes store to allow you to upload custom photos of your neighborhood for use in streetview. The best part is this will only cost you 99 cents per upload.
I have reported this problem to http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html anybody else having this problem should as well.

  • Long-time Eudora user, rookie Mail user--have questions, need help!

    Hi, all!
As the subject heading says, I've been using Eudora for a very long time (way past its shelf life) and have been playing around with Mail off and on over the past year.  (Now, in Eudora's defense, the expiration date on it was a "Best by..." not a "Use by..." date   and it's been working fantastically for years! )
I recently started to plunge into Mail more deeply and have a couple of questions.
    1. Drafting vs. queuing.
I am used to Eudora's system where a bunch of drafted messages sit in an Outbox.  They stay there until I flag QUEUE for the ones I'll eventually be mailing.
It's a good system.  A quick look at the flags in the Outobx lets me know which I still to need to work on, and which ones are ready to go out (or need a final review before sending).   The user then selects "Send Messages" and it e-mails the ones queued in the Outbox, but not the remaining draft emails that haven't yet been queued.
How do I set up something like that in Mail?
Right now, all I have is a list of draft messages and I cannot tell which ones are still really drafts and which are ready to be sent!
    2.  Work-around to try and mirror Eudora's system.
I tried creating a new mailbox called Queue, in which I can park the emails I've done editing.  Of course, the problem with such a scheme is that when I want to send messages, I either have to put them back into the Drafts mailbox, from where I can select and send everything (including ones I haven't finished editing!), or drag them into Mail's Outbox where they go out instantly.  That's a little freaky and I can see disasters happening (emails going out when I'm wanting to drag other messages to a different mailbox).
    3.  Disable auto-sending?
Is there a way of turning off and on the Outbox's automatic sending action?  That could be the simplest solution for me.  I'd really like to send messages only via a menu command--yet, from I've determined, Mail's Send menu command will send any messages selected in the Draft mailbox.  Again, I see screw-ups with that as the wrong draft could be selected and Mail would send it out.
    4.  Display of badges for mailboxes.
This is more of a curiosity, but is there a way of having a user-created mailbox show how many e-mails are in there?
    Solutions?
What do you all do as to work flow?  How do you go about creating and revising a bunch of e-mails, but only sending out certain ones?  And ensuring that only the ones you want to go out, go out?!

Thank you for posting all this info.  Unfortunately i have no idea how to do flags and how to use a smart mailbox as a place to store emails i am not ready to send.  Eudora is vastly superior in all the things it empowers the user to quickly and easily do, in the traditional Apple spirit of intuitiveness, clear direct normal (not esoteric) communicatioin and user friendliness.
about three weeks ago i was pretty much forced into Mountain Lion bcause my old MacBook is barely functioning at all and i got a new MacBook Pro.  So, good bye Eudora that i've used since 1995, only because i couldn't find another mail program that did what it does.  I wonder why there aren't others.  I've tried MailForge, it's a great attempt but it seems to have run out of steam and isn't working well enough.
I am using Mail and Gmail. The result is i'm suffering a whole range of loss of functionality in email, and am not getting a lot of messages, they are here somewhere but i can't always find them, i have to go to my old computer, enduring a kind of freeze where a beachball is a sign of progress, a trackpad that barely works for drag and drop anymore and a battery that needs reaplacing. i think the hard drive is failing. but i still need it to retrieve my email reliably, to a poiint where i see i 'm going to have to put money into it so it can keep working, for email.  what a poor solution. I am trying as best i can to have Mail communicate better.
i just wanted to thank you for your encouraging posts and giving me something to follow up on to try to use, to address this one of many loss of Eudora problems. Why wouldn't a mail program give you the option to queue mail?   Why take away options and functionality?   sorry, i'm just ranting because i've had a very frustrating last few weeks related to numerous new OS challenges, but email is the only really serious one.
I really like your idea of badges to show number of new messages, i think that's what you meant, you didn't say 'new', but another great and helpful thing about Eudroa is sorting mail into mail boxes and opening those mailboxes that get new mail each time you download mail, so you kow what's new. You can immediately see it.  In Apple Mail, i find i have to dig through each of the 12 'on my mac' mailboxes/folders i created so far, to see if there is new mail in them. A lot of extra trouble for something that a superior email program can do for you.

    Hi Kashif,
Glad you like the new Community. Communication among user group leaders works a little differently on this site than on the previous site. Rather than having communication focus around e-mail distribution lists, communication now is focused within the site itself. The intent is that this will provide users the one place to come for information, rather than having to sort through lots of e-mail threads. That doesn't mean that e-mail is completely out of the picture though. Users can opt-in to receive e-mail notifications when an individual piece of content is changed, or when content is posted to a space. Look for the "Receive email notifications" link under "Actions" to start receiving notices. To stop receiving notices, go back to the same content/space and click "Stop email notifications".
Your Relationship Manager will be talking with you and the other leaders in your region over the next few days and weeks regarding how you and your group of leaders want to communicate.
    Best regards,

    Hello BassoonPlayer,
Since you are using one of the the school's Macbooks, it is quite possible that the time and date are not properly set on the computer that you are using.  FaceTime will not work if you do not have the proper time zone set up for the location that you are in.  This past week, there were a two other Macbook users I've helped by simply telling them to set the Date/Time properly.  By the way, you described your problem very well, which makes it easier for us to help you.  Hope this solves your problem -- if not, post back and I can suggest other remedies.
