A very new user needs some help and advice....

Hi,
I have just taken the bold leap into Indesign and this is the first day of my 30 day trial.
I need help and advice from you good poeple...please.
I have been successfully creating A5 booklets (folded A4) using MS Word and printing to a desktop printer. MS Word sorted out my page order for me at printing time so the correct pages were put together.
I have been reading as much information as I could find but I am still unable to do the same in Indesign.
I'm looking forward to using the advanced layout features and having control over what I do but, I need to work out this basic step before I go any further.
I hope what I have explained makes sense.
Regards
John

So presumably you create a new document, A5 portrait, facing pages. Make sure your ducument page count is a multiple of 4.
Create, type, tweak, ponder, edit, smile, save.
To create you booklet using InDesign, from the file menu select Print Booklet.
You will probably need to jump back and forth from the Print Settings button adjusting Paper Size, Orientation, Color, and from the Print Booklet tab set for 2-up Saddle Stitch.
Much has been posted on this topic, these are the basics, Print Booklet is not the best module Adobe ever wrote, IMO

  • New user, need some help with an audio problem

Hey, I'm a total newbie to logic express and there is something I can't quite figure out, and if someone could just walk me through it I would be very greatful.
I'm using an M-Audio fast track USB recording interface to record my guitar on to the computer, and I have pretty much no idea how to record or hear my guitar.

Look at the Oracle analytic functions ... specifically LAG and LEAD.

  • Need some help and guidance please!

    Hi everyone,
I desperately need some help because I am at my wits end.   In September I purchased a Compaq Presario CQ60-450US.  Shortly after purchasing, I fresh installed Windows 7 Professional.  Recently I decided to tried to dual boot ubuntu on the machine only to find that the installation failed because of CD read error.  I know for a fact that the CD is not the issue because I have used this CD three other times to install ubuntu thus I came to the conclusion that the CD/DVD drive was bad.
I called HP support to get a new CD/DVD drive replaced only to spend 2 hours on the phone with a individual that decided to troubleshoot first trying to install ubuntu remotely (I informed the indiviual that the remote session would end), then by playing a DVD and "skipping throughout" the movie.  He/she said that she could see no issue.  (no diagnostic was run)I informed the individual that I had issues with buring as well.  He/she proceeded to go online and install software asking me to demonstrate the issue after which the call got dropped mysteriously.
I called HP support back and told them that I am having an issue now burning.  They proceed to connect remotely and look at the software the previous support individual downloaded and said that the software was not supported by HP.  I informed the individual that I give permission to install any software needed to troubleshoot but the individual said that I could not be suppoted because I wasn't using the OS installed by HP.  I was instructed to recover my machine to the OS that was installed with the machine if I was to continue to get support.
I informed the individual that the drivers and software are the same for either OS considering the CD/DVD rom is a plug and play device.  The individual refused to help and told me I had lost my warranty because of my decision to install an OS directly from Microsoft or a third paper vendor.
That is where I stand.  HP is refusing to give me support because I am not running their Vista Home edition even though my issue is hardware.  I cannot find any warrent information stating that I need to have the original operating system installed on the machine to receive support.   Can anyone point me to a reputable division that can help me with my issue?  I feel I was just thrown aside so that they don't have to initiate a repair.  If not has anyone filed a compalint against this outrageous support requirement?

    Dear ndjumpball,
I would like to say that I have some good -- or at least encouraging -- advice.  Regretfully, I do not.  I had issues with my dv7 practically since purchasing it a year ago specifically so I would have a reliable computer for school.  My first problem: I bought my laptop a mere 7 weeks before HP started offering their free upgrade to Windows 7.  Consequently, I was forced to purchase the full installation retail or continue to deal with the wonton freezes and system failures that inevitably occurred while I was working on homework -- courtesy of HP's installation of Vista Home Premium 64-bit.  Thankfully, I was able to purchase a copy of Windows 7 Professional 64-bit through a significant student discount offer from Microsoft, and I had my new OS downloaded the evening of October 23, 2009; I had to give their servers time to free up, since it seemed like everyone and their dogs were also downloading what the reviews posted on CNET and PC World touted as being more reliable.  I recall (I can't remember exactly which site this appeared) the statement, "Windows 7 is what Vista should have been from the beginning."
I was all excited and happy now that I had a laptop for school that had everything I was looking for:  decent size hard drive, a fair amount of RAM, great 17.3" display with awesome colors, and a CDRW/DVDRW/Blu-Ray disk drive in the bay.  Not only was I very satisfied with the hardware; it also came with a decent host of software that are thought was pretty cool, too.  It came with CyberLink's DVD Suite 6 that I could activate simply by touching a soft button above the keyboard.  Aside from Vista Home Premium crashing on me at the most inopportune times, I was exceedingly happy with my $1000 purchase and investment.  Then came the "upgrade" to Windows 7 Professional 64-bit...Because I didn't have a "compatible" version of Vista, I had to do a full ("custom") install.  In other words, I lost all of the cool features I originally bought the machine for in the first place...no more cool one-finger's brush software activation (still don't have that working), and HP Chat Support told me the same thing they told you.  The following is a direct copy/paste quote from an email response I received from HP Total Care:  "In order to help you relevantly I would like to request you to please revert back to Vista operating system and check whether the issue is persisting or not.  If the issue is still persisting after reverting the operating system back to vista then we need to perform system recovery."
After pursuing my case for 6 months -- finally getting my case escalated to two HP Customer Care Case Managers in Texas/Oklahoma -- the best "customer support" I received was what I'm sure was a truly heartfelt and sincere apology...  Oh, neither case manager was "able" to send me either the true upgrade disks that would have preserved the features purchased, nor were they willing to send me a stand-alone installation of the CyberLink’s DVD Suite 6 that is currently offered with the HP Pavilion dv6t Quad Edition series.  (In massive frustration and anger, I bought the CyberLink’s DVD software - $100 I didn't have to spend on something I had already bought...)
A month later (late March), MY CD-RW/DVD-RW/Blu-Ray drive stopped working.  After an hour online with Customer Care, I had finally convinced the rep that the drive was working fine after my ditching Vista Home Premium, and that its failure had absolutely nothing to do with Windows 7 Pro.  After giving the guy my credit card number as security, I had a replacement drive shipped to me.
My personal recommendation:  clearly state that the hardware failure had nothing to do with whatever software or OS you chose to install.  Bottom line:  your computer is only 8 months old and is still covered under warranty, they can replace the defective part, or you can return the entire machine.  You probably want to be the "Nice Guy" but you need to remind them that you have other brands available to purchase.
I don't know if that helps or not, but thank you for giving me the opportunity to vent!  :-)

  • Airplay keeps disappearing... Need some help and insight...

    Hello!
I just bought an ATV2, but it seems to be having trouble to provide the airplay function.
I have almost every kind of device that can connect to it, iPhone 4 (4.3.3), iPad 2 (4.3.5), Windows desktop (connected to the network via ethernet cable) and a MBP (Lion) connected wirelessly, both on the latest iTunes.
When airplay fails, which happens all the time, it fails on all this devices. Both my MBP and Windows desktop have automatic time set for Apple's servers, so does the ATV2.
Sometimes resetting the airplay functionality on the ATV2 (from on to off to on again) seems to do the trick, but only for about 10 minutes. Other times, I have to either reset the ATV2 or even the network router.
Could this be related to the router? I´m also having problems (already did before the ATV2) with homesharing. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn´t. I´m not sure what to do here, I´ve tried everything I could to try and at least narrow down the problem source, but I can´t.
Also, the ATV2 some times has problems connecting to my Apple account, giving me an error message, but seems to stay connected to youtube services, thus, to the internet. The ATV2 seems to be able to connect to the account again most times when I re-enter the details, but it has failed on occasion (I bought it yesterday, but have already tried so many things to solve the airplay that I´ve ran into this stuff many times during yesterday afternoon and today)
I´ve tried moving the ATV2 closer to the router, setting a fixed IP address on the ATV2 and the other devices, have the TCP/UDP 123 port opened, I don´t know what else to try.
I would really appreciate some help on this, something else to try. Can this be related to the router since I´m having homesharing problems too? Or can it be something wrong with my account at Apple (not that I think that matters for airplay, but I´m willing to try anything)
    Thank you very much.

iStumbler isn´t currently working on Lion. KisMac doesn´t crash but can´t find any networks either.
When you say, try connecting with ethernet, you´re refering to connecting the ATV2 directly to the router with ethernet correct? That is a good idea, I didn´t remember to try that.
I did try changing the channels on the router, currently on 6, but I´m going to try to change to 1, 3 or 11 now.
I´m currently at a coffee shop, I came here to use their wireless network and try homesharing between my Mac and iPhone, which never or poorly works at home. So far its working flawless. Sometimes the iPhone takes a bit longer to reconnect to the shared library (for the icon to appear on the iPod app and then to open the selected library) then others, but in general, for the past hour and a half, its been connecting to the macbook without much trouble, hinting me that the problem at home lies indeed with the router.
    Thank you

  • New user, need major help...

I just got a new Ipod shuffle for Christmas and having a little trouble...I have many mp3's on my winamp, and really wanted to transfer them to the shuffle so i could listen to them while i work out or travel...i right clicked on the song and it transferred, but i can't get them to play on the ipod....basicaly, how do i transfer mp3's that i currently have onto this and have them play?...is the shuffle for itunes only?...thank you for your help, i appreciate it...

Add the songs to the iTunes library, and then send them to the iPod shuffle from there. The iPod uses a folder structure different from other MP3 players, and requires software specifically designed for that structure for storage of playable music.

  • A newbie in need of help and advice

I was wondering if someone could help and advise me...
I got my macbook at the beginning of the year.. I love it, so far. BUT as its my first mac, I know nothing about them or how to proceed.
I understand there is a thing called 'bootcamp', where I can install Windows. I have just started college and a lot of the stuff I will be working on in class, I would like to continue at home, so I need windows.
Obviously after persuading my hubby to buy me a mac, I cant turn around and say its no good for college work. Now this bootcamp and installing windows... would I get virus's like a normal windows computer? This was my big thing about buying a mac, the lack of virus.
How do i even go about getting windows? etc
    Many thanks in advance
    Nic

    Hi Nic,
You can buy your own genuine copy of Windows from either Microsoft or a reliable reseller like Amazon. I would recommend Windows 7 Home Premium. On Amazon you can find a reasonable discount at the link below.
    http://amzn.to/qVtBvK
Once you get your copy of Windows, you can proceed with the Boot Camp installation.
    1. Open Boot Camp Assistant after backing up important files and documents.
    2. You should have a Snow Leopard OS X DVD on hand if you bought the Mac last year. If you don't, click the bullet that says "Downoad the support software for this Mac," and you should save all of that to some external source like a flash drive or external hard drive, CD, DVD, something.
    3. If you do have an OS X DVD, click that bullet instead.
    4. Partition your hard drive. It may sound intimidating but all it means is divide the space according to how much you want to give Windows and how much you want to leave for Mac OS X. Dividing in half is usually the easiest way so click "Divide Equally."
    5. Click Continue and when you are prompted, insert the Windows DVD and click Start Installation.
    6. When the Windows Installer prompts you to select a place to install, click on the partition of the hard drive that says "BOOTCAMP" and click Drive Options > Format so Windows can install correctly. It will tell you it won't be able to install at first, but when you click Format under Drive Options, it will be able to.
    7. Proceed with the Windows installation. When it has to restart, hold down the Option key as your computer turns on and select the hard drive that says "Windows," NOT the CD/DVD icon that says "Windows".
    8. Continue with the installation. When it is done, you can insert your Mac OS X DVD (on Windows) and install the Boot Camp drivers, or if you saved it to an external source, connect it that way and install.
    9. To change between operating systems, just restart the computer while holding down the Option key and when the menu appears, double click on the OS you'd like to start up with.
Feel free to ask if this seems confusing at all.

  • Very new user needs help setting up a three user network plus server

    Hi,
I'm an owner/manager of a recruitment company in the UK and we use three mac minis in our office to run our recruitment software (on a filemaker database) internet, mail and MS Office 2008.
We currently use one of the mini's as a 'server' in so much that it has a external HDD attached and shared across the network. We use Airport Extreme to share the internet.
Although to begin with this set up has served us well the amount of data travelling across the network and the prospect of a couple of new employees starting has made me think it's time to invest in a network and server of some description.
With my very limited knowledge i'm proposing the following but would greatly appreciate some assistance from the forum users!
Install OSX 10.5.3 Server on one of the Mac Minis
Get an ethernet switch and cable the three minis together
Use the external HDD as a time machine backup and store all files on the 'server' HDD
Continue to use the Airport Extreme to share the internet over airport.
I have a couple of questions:
Can the Server computer still be used as a desktop or do we need to buy a new mini
Does this set up make the airport base station redundant
As we grow I would envisage enlisting the help of a specialist Mac IT support company but in the mean time any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you again in advance.

I would get something better specified than a mini to be my Mac OS X based server, and although you can run it as a desktop I wouldnt advise it.
You ought to go out and buy the book Mac OS X Server 10.5 Essentials - The only Apple-certified book on Mac OS X Server - which Ive found to be a godsend of a book in getting Leopard Server going. Make sure you get the 10.5 version. Im in the UK and got it from Foyles in London.
Your approach is fine, but Leopard Server isnt as plug and go as the rest of Apples products. In particular it just doesnt function correctly if you do not have working DNS before you start. Period. If you dont understand DNS in your office or If having read the book you find its too technical you might be better off buying a no-brand Network File Store/Disk or even a Time Capsule from Apple if its mainly shared disk space that you need.

  • E1200 new user- need some expert tips

Hi guys, I just bought a new e1200 model a few hours ago to replace my old WRT54G version 3.0 , My house is not that big less than 400 sq meters and one floor only. In my old router, when I go to my garden, the internet speed is very slow and thats when I thought that I needed a new upgrade , so I got the e1200, would have wanted a more expensive version like the e2000 + models and higher but this is the only one available here in our city.
The current location of my router is thesame as before , its near my monitor here in the table , are there any tips to like increase it's signal ?
    This is from support:
Yes, and for you to optimize its N-functionality, you need to set your Network Mode to N-only, Channel Width to 40MHz and the Security Mode to WPA2 Personal. But you need to be sure that all of your devices' cards are using N.
I have tried changing the channel to 6 , changing the network mode to n, or security mode to wpa2 personal caused some problems with my brothers laptop, so i had ot switch back to wpa personal only. What else do I need to tweak here ?
(Mod Note: Edited for guideline compliance.)

Well you can try the following combination of steps:
A] With the help of Cisco Connect Software (if at all you have installed the router with the help of this software)
1] Open the software and go to the option which says "Router Settings"
2] Then click on the option which says "Advanced Settings" which will take you to the router's configuration page.
3] Then go to the Wireless tab, keep network mode as mixed,
For Channel Settings of 2.4 GHz you can make Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 1, 6, 9, 11..
B] If you haven't installed Cisco Connect then you can log on to the router's user interface using it's default IP address in the browser which is 192.168.1.1 and type in 'admin' as the password leaving the username field blank. This will take you to the router's web interface and then follow steps as mentioned above to make the changes.
Secondly avoid using any other wireless devices like cordless phones, microwave oven etc nearer to the router. Update the drivers for the wireless card of the wireless computer. Then check the wireless connection status.

  • New user needs workflow help..

    Hi,
I have been using iMovie for years and love the product. I have done 3 documentary style films (60 - 90 minute range) using it. Call me crazy, but I did everything I needed to do in it quickly and easily.
Upon seeing the future of imovie with its latest release, I decided that instead of getting the new imovie, which I don't like, I would take the opportunity to upgrade to Final Cut Express instead. So I am transitioning my workflow from imovie to FCE.
Here's my current question: I have started to shoot footage for my latest film. Previously, in imovie.. I would then take all that footage and just import EVERYTHING into imovie. Since I shoot about 90 minutes of footage each week, I would just create a different imovie file, corresponding to each tape I used in the camera, so I'd have different files: week 1, week 2, etc. This allowed for ALL my footage to be in the computer in a way I could find things easily and not leave anything on the camera. Then I would edit down each week, once it was done I'd export that "sequence" and when all the sequences were done, I'd pull all the pieces into one new imovie file to do the final assembly, sound work, etc.
So what do you all recommend for switching over to FCE? In looking through the literature, it appears FCE stores all the video elements for all projects together, rather than in my weekly individual files. TO me, that means I have one file reference over 30 hours of raw video footage and that just makes me uneasy. So... do I do what I have always done and just import everything into FCE and then edit afterwards, or do I do a "first round" of editing when I import so that I am only capturing what I think I will use? What will give me the least amount of headaches come mid-October when I start to plow through all this footage and put the film together?

    Steve,
You can do it just about the same way in FCE, although there are some subtle differences & siginificantly greater editing capabilities in FCE.
You will have to create an FCE project in order to capture video from your camera. However, once captured, the resulting clips (which are actually QuickTime files on your hard drive) can be used & reused in any FCE project - they are not locked to the FCE project in which you captured them.
So, for example, you could capture each tape individually same as you always have (giving each tape a unique name - that's important). Each capture in FCE will give you a separate file on your hard drive. Then, instead of having a different iMovie file for each tape, you will have a different file (captured clip, in FCE terminology) on your hard drive for each tape.
You can then create a new FCE project (if you want to) and import any/all of the captured clips, edit them together as you desire, and export the resulting sequence.
In an FCE project, however, you have additional capabilities beyond iMovie to organize your clips - because in the FCE Browser you can create Bins & Folders with their own names and then import & organize your clips into them. You also have the capability to create multiple sequences in a single FCE project, so you wouldn't necessarily have to go through the extra steps & aggravation of exporting intermediate sequences only to reimport them for further editing. Nested sequences in FCE are a very powerful way of assembling a finished project from intermediate sequences & clips.
I do suggest that you get a copy of Tom Wolsky's excellent book, Final Cut Express HD 3.5 Editing Workshop to help you get started with FCE.

Whatever your problem is, there is nothing here to support being slow.
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • BOM Explosion Levels: SAP Help needs some help (and so do I!)

I'm using CS12 to explode a BOM. I added some fields to my layout - specifically "PPH" which the (f1) help calls "Path (Predecessor)"
The SAP Help has a BOM tree example but the formats are all wrong.  I can't tell which of their real/dummy materials go into which level of build...not to mention, shouldn't "Mat J" be a 3/1 - 3rd level of the BOM??
I am creating a custom components report and trying to understand how these Path-Pred / Level values so I can correlate my BOM levels visually to the report results.

    Hi,
Agree the help display of the BOM structure is not so user friendly.
For level, the number increases when you move in vertical direction in the BOM across levels (T to B).
For path, the number increases when you move in horizontal direction in the BOM at a given level (L to R).
So now look thru' the values in CS12 & you should be able to figure it out.

  • New convert needs some help, please.

I just converted to MacBook with Intel Core Duo and I need to run a few programs that only run on the MS OS.
Anyone with a Quick Start on loading the MS OS onto the Mac would be appreciated along with any headsups to look out for while installing or post installation. Any feedback would be great as well. XP versions suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome.
You have 2 options : Apple's own Boot Camp OR Parallels Desktop.
Boot camp - free download. You need to partion your hard drive - very easy, just follow the instructions.
With Boot camp, you are either in Windows OR OS X. (restart required when you switch OSs)
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/
Parallels - 80 bucks (15 day free trial) You do not need to partion your hard drive
With Parallels you boot up windows within OS X

I run Parallels - and it has been flawless.
You will want alot of RAM (I have 2 Gig, and both OSs run fast)

  • I Am New Here/Need Some Help

Hello, I am new here. I really do not know if there are any rules here and how to find my way around here.
I have been learning Java since November of last year on my own since my school does not provide any classes. I mostly make applet games for fun.
Is there any parts of the forums here that are specifically for games and applets? I could not find any, but read in another post that there was one. He did not provide a link.
I was searching the Internet on Graphics2D to see how I can make only a part of my images appear and how to repeat tiles I make for games. When I make a game, I put the map together in MS Paint by copying and pasting tiles. I was told that I could actually repeat it in a way where I could arrange the tiles by code without having to put it together in MS Paint.
I also learned that it is better to load one image instead of a bunch so I want to put my animation as one image and only have a clip of it show.
I was curious if it possible to make things transparent, too? like if I wanted a ghost in my game.
I want to be a pro at making games with Java in a couple of years from now. I have made a couple of 2D graphical games already, but they had a lot of mistakes with them such as no game loop, the stuff I mentioned above, heavily using AWT, move by key instead of mouse, coding all into one class (messy in the end), stuff like that. So I am hoping by talking with other Java programmers here, I will get better at making games.
    Thanks for helping in advance.

It's on the main forums list.
I was searching the Internet on Graphics2D to see how
I can make only a part of my images appear and how to
repeat tiles I make for games. When I make a game, I

pasting tiles. I was told that I could actually
repeat it in a way where I could arrange the tiles by
code without having to put it together in MS Paint. Yes you can, but AFAIK there's no API given in core Java to do this for you. I'll bet someone has written one though -- try Google. Also MIDP 2.0 (for J2ME) has an API to do stuff like that. I've used it; it's pretty good.
I also learned that it is better to load one image
instead of a bunch so I want to put my animation as
one image and only have a clip of it show. Yeah, you can load an image and then use a Graphics.drawImage method to select only a subset of that image.
I imagine that there may also be images that create image objects out of clips of larger images, but if so I don't know what they'd be. Check the docs.
I was curious if it possible to make things
transparent, too? like if I wanted a ghost in my
game.Yeah. Create an image with an alpha channel. MS Paint probably can't do that, but Photoshop can easily, and so can GIMP, which is a free, open-source, Photoshop-like image editor.
So you can create a PNG image with certain parts either fully or partially transparent, then you could load that image into Java easily, and use it (or subsections of it) as sprites in a game.
Try the games forum. There's also stuff like this: http://community.java.net/projects/topic/Games

  • Really really need some help and guidance here as I am going nuts!!

I had a laptop with itunes on it and when I connected my iphone it automatically synced and I could move and transfer music from my library to my iphone and vice versa, so all good.
Anyway, one evening I turned on my laptop to see that my itunes icon had just disappeared - literally! No idea why. When looking in the start menu , I found my itunes music in a folder but no icon/itunes facility - all gone.
I looked up this problem on the apple troubleshooting site, and they showed a series of steps to complete to get the icon back, but this failed.
Since then, I have bought a new laptop, so I thought I would just reinstall itunes again which is what I have just done. However, my iphone will not sync to this itunes and I cannot transfer files from itunes to the iphone and vice versa. It's like they will not connect together and I am so frustrated.
    Can anyone help me? Please!!!

Installing iTunes does not cause your media to magically appear.
If you want your media on your new computer, then you must put it there.
