New user to Macs

Can someone please advise of best way to do this

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
As you have 10.1.x you can only upgrade up to 10.1.5 for free. You must purchase:
10.2.x to be able to upgrade free to 10.2.8 (Jaguar)
10.3.x to upgrade to 10.3.9 (Panther) or
10.4.x to update to 10.4.7 (Tiger).
Apple only sells Tiger today but you can find old versions at Apple Rescue.
Tiger is the only retail OS to be supplied on DVD. It's worth checking in Apple Menu > About this Mac.. > More Info > Hardware to see what kind of optical drive you have. You can buy Tiger on CD for an additional $10.
I'd advise not bothering to buy Jaguar or Panther as Tiger is a much more advanced OS. The only caveat with that is that Tiger really needs plenty of RAM - I'd say 512Mb minimum for Office use - again you can check how much you have in System Profiler. (Just shout if you need help with the RAM side of things)
Once you've bought Tiger upgrading is easy just insert the disk and follow the instructions for an 'Archive and Install'.

The printer is meant to have a function calle dAir Print also that is meant to be used for Mac but I cannot figure out any of this! Why would the MacBook Pro not automatically pic up the printer? Please help...

If you have not already done so, you should read the user manual that came w/the printer and/or contact Epson tech support.

In order to resolve the issue if it occurs again, more info would be helpful as to what occurred prior to the "hang." One potential fix would be to try a Safe Boot:
After the Mac is completely shut down, push the power button and immediately after the startup tone, hold down the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
There should be a message that says "SafeBoot." After the Mac is completely booted, try restarting and see if the issue is gone.

    Hi Amanda,
Software applications are usually installed in the Applications folder on the Macintosh HD and are accessible to all users.
I would advise you to check the Applications folder and see if your software is in there.
Next step would be to Control Click or Right Click on the application and choose "Get Info" and make sure the permissions are set to "Read & Write" for all users. The article below provides more details:

You may need to contact Adobe Support if this does not resolve your issue:

    Hope this information helps!

Hola & welcome to the Forums!
Have you noticed any problems, like Time zone or Time display?

  • Can't log new user onto Mac Mini Server

I can't log a new user into Mac Mini server.  Have added the user to the Workgroup Manager, and am now trying to use the password created there for log-in on user computer. Any advice?

Do you have Server Access Control Lists (SACLs) configured?  If so, you will need to add this new user to the appropriate SACLs before it can connect.  As an example, when I create new users, I need to add them to the File Sharing SACL or they never see any available shares on the server.

  • Unable to view pdf - initially thought to be user / OS issue for new user to MAC.

Unable to view pdf created in Live Cycle Designer ES2.  I initially thought this was a user / OS issue when I created a document for someone who is new to a MAC laptop.  She could not view the document through email.  Unfortunately, I began seeing the same error in my own document folders when searching for another document showing as icons instead of a list.  I can open the file without a problem although I see the error she sees only while viewing the icons in my folder.  I am using a Windows 7 PC. Now, I also know that if the document is downloaded, it can be viewed.
    Other notes:
If trying to access the form via the internet, the same error is seen through Chrome, Firefox, and Mozilla but NOT through IE
Everyone seems to have the latest or a very recent READER
The form is compatible with Reader versions 7 and up
Again, downloading from the internet to the computer appears to allow the file to open properly
Document cannot be viewed on the Galaxy Tab 2 via Chrome or the pre-installed Internet Browser, nor can it be viewed through the Reader after download to tablet. I did not try on an Apple iPad.
All parties involved are up-to-date with virus protection.
Below is a link to the exact message received when trying to open the document.

Sorry, this is a user to user forum and we're just customers who help out when we can, so things don't always happen right away.
Reader, Regardless of OS or device, is as the name implies, only a Reader.  There are different mail settings between Mac Mail Outlook and Thunderbird as well as Andsroid's mail app, whose name escpoaes me.
Have you checked in the Live Cycle Forum? There are people there with FAR more experience using LC developed forms. It's part of my Creative Suite, but I've never even opened it myself.

  • I am a new user of Mac after many years of Windows my question is What am I doing wrong:

I am busy working when the rainbow wheel comes up as would the spinning mouse on windows, I then have to wait for the rainbow to disappear ie the program to catch up before I can continue. It is brand new machine and shouldnt yet be bogged down.
I have to say at this point in time I am not sure that I have made the right move.
I have installed Mac Office as that is what I have used for many years, so firstly I thought there was a confliction with mail and Outlook as window users know that has been an issue with windows in the passed so I have uninstalled Outlook so as not to duplicate. I have cleaned the calender and contact with downloaded  Mac Apps. I am now at a loss what to do next because this isnt a spedy machine. Its a 2.9 HGz Quad core i5 so no light weight my old Dell is a Quad and still has enough speed to keep up with me and is 4 years old. So y only thought left there must be another confliction. Please advise as I am not completly in the know as I would have been with the Windows

As to any conflict between 2 different program that do the same thing and are installed on the same computer at the same time there simply isn't any unless both programs are running at the same time and trying to access the same file at the same time. That is except for AV software that runs all the time.
So having MS Office Outlook installed and Mac "Mac Mail" there shouldn't be any conflict at all. Even if you were to run them at the same time. They are both just Mail and contact programs, in the case of Outlook. They would both just go out to your Email account servers and download the available mail on those servers. One doesn't interact with the other. They just interact with your email account servers, which may cause a conflict on the server but not on the computer.
On my Windows computers I have 2 CAD programs installed, Autocad and Visual Cadd, and run them both at the same time. No conflicts between them as long as I have different CAD drawings open in each. If I try to open the same drawing in each program the program will popup a warning that the files is in use by another program and it willl be opened for Viewing Only or not opened it at all.

  • New user of mac

    Hi all,
I am not quite familiar with the mac system. If I want to compose and arrange music at home, should i use logic pro or express?
    Thx
    Anzz

    Hi Annz
It depends on your experience level and the features you want. Is it just a hobby for you or are you a pro or wanting to be a pro. Do you have any experience making music on a PC. some novice users start with express and then trade up as they gain experience. here is a link to a comparison chart that will give to the features of each

  • Few questions from new user of Macs

iSight: I gather that is a built in camera on the iMAc?  Why does it have this special name, rather than just "Camera"  On my iphone I have a "Camera" not an "iSight"  What is the difference?

iSight used to be an external thing you buy for your Mac. I have one actually. They made it internal and kept the name. It had a name because the idea of a camera in your computer used to be new until HP and others copied it.

  • New User to Mac Mini - upgrades

I am about to purchase a Mac Mini from an acquitence whom I trust. He has only bought this a few months ago, and is upgrading his system.
The one he has is the smallest of the models and I am wondering if I would like to upgrade it, is it possible? Also, if not suggested, can someone give me layman terms on what it would be capable of as far as storage of music or pictures, and how fast it would be? Sorry, I am being very generic in questions, I just don't know too much about hardware. I appreciate the feedback.
    Thank you.

Well, those are better specs than my Mac mini, which is a couple of years older. You can get by on 2GB of memory, but you may experience faster performance with more, particularly if you have several applications open simultaneously. The hard drive is not super large, but it should also be fine unless you are going to store a ton of videos and/or big graphics files.
You can upgrade the memory and the hard drive - those components are not terribly costly, and if you are slightly handy, you can do the job yourself. You have to pry the two halves of the Mini to get inside, but once you are in, it is an easy matter to replace RAM (up to 8 GB) or the hard drive (which, by the way, is the smaller 2.5" size used in most laptops. Here are some how-to videos: http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/macmini2009/

  • Hi, I'm a new user of Mac, bought mine 3 days ago

I wonder if I update my OS X into Mountain Lion OS X later, do I need to repurchase (pay once more) the apps that I've paid earlier; such as GarageBand, iPhoto etc?

    bought mine 3 days ago
Apple - See if you qualify for a free OS X Mountain Lion upgrade.
Your Mac qualifies for the free upgarde to Mountain Lion, and no, you do not have to re purchase the apps you have already paid for.

How come Leopard let me use the WGM in standard mode?
While SA complains that it won't work in Standard Configuration, WGM does not. There is some fault in the logic of this for which I don't have an explanation.
If I want to get control on Dock, selection of Home folder, config of Proxy... which I think are basic things, do I really need the advanced mode?
If you wish to have complete control of all client settings, yes. There really is no disadvantage of using an Advanced configuration other than the learning curve.
So if I switch to advanced mode, there is good chance I won't get this error message anymore, right?
    Yes.
