Newb questions.....needs help!

hey guys,
im new here. ive had my iPod for a long while now. its the gen with the 4 buttons across the top.
anyway. it wont sync with my computer. i plug it in and it gets thru about 200 songs and then the screen on the iPod goes blank and resets itself with the little apple icon on the screen.
i tried to restore the iPod thru iTunes. and it just says that the firmware doesnt exsist on the iPod.
nothing seems to be working. can i get some help here. i only use the iPod for my car. its connected thru a Pioneer iPod box and a 7700mp headunit.
idk if that means anything, but i need help cuz this is annoying and i wanna figure this out. thanks.

Hmm i have loaded optimized defaults because i made the system unstable trying to learn how the settings worked.
Would it be simpler to ask for help from scratch, my goal is not to overclock my processor yet i just would like to see my ram operate at 800mhz relaibly
Right now CPU-Z tells me my ddr2 is operating at 400mhz, Corsair says this is 800mhz ddr2, I need education and help. I can build a computer and i can trouble shoot a medium range of hardware issues. I have 0 experience with this type of MOBO and Socket, Socket AM2 seemed like a good choice for the ddr2.

Are you scanning as jpeg, tiff or some other format?
Are you using continuous numbering for files names as by definition scanned files have no exif data.

Newbie! Need Help wit choice! Lots of Questions! PLEASE HELP

Have been a PC user for ever and recently have seen the appeal and performance of macs.
I am shortly going to college and have been reading hundreds of reviews and discussions on the different portbales available.
I will be using the portable for
- word processing
- internet and email
- music
-DVD's
-light graphics work
- light video work
Currently on AMD anthlon XP 2700+ with 1 GB RAM
I ruled out the 12" ibook as no superdrive and 17" powerbook as too large.
The ibook seems nice, worried about processor speed, will it cope with graphics and video and fast enough for encoding etc? Also worried about the tightness of the resolution, is the screen good in comparisson to powerbook. Also thought about DVD;s not being in widescreen. Also is the availabe work space enough?
The powerbook 12" seems nice because of it's compactness. The screen depth seems more than !5" and is that a problem? Is the 12" powerbook which has superdrive got a large enough visible work space?
The 15" Powerbook seems great, it's got nice screen and same size as old windows laptop (though resolution much higher), have read a lot of problems about very hot powerbooks (how big a problem is this?), i have alsp read about latch issues,(bad?) and is there a serious issue with a gap between the display and keyboard? Also have read lots of issues about the logic board failing and is this really common, as being student don't want to have to fork out vast sums of money and applecare is steep.
What would you recommend? Could spend up to £2000, would rather not spend it all(sorry don't know wot that is in $'s)
Just loved the OS and was all set and now am a little anxious as seems quite recurrent problems exist. Please help and offer any ideas, tips, solutions, experiences and anything that helped you chose ur mac!

I just bought my powerbook after a summer's worth of work, four weeks ago. Other than a few quibbles (mainly things I haven't figured out how to do on the mac, since i'm new to the OS) this 15" is awesome... It's fast, it's small, it has a widescreen, and... THE KEYBOARD LIGHTS UP (jaws drop left and right when the lights go out)...
It seems very capable, and hasn't failed me yet, knock on wood. The latch works fine and there is no issue with keys touching the screen.
I was worried about the heat issue too, so I thought ahead and bought a Vantec cooling pad. for $35 on Newegg.com, it has adjustable fan speeds, and a 4 port USB hub, which is VERY handy. It will get warm if i'm using it on my lap, but not enough for the computer's fans to turn on. Besides, I think the heat argument is a little weak. Sure, they may get hot, but we're talking about a high performance, VERY thin aluminum computer... Aluminum transfers heat very easily, so expect it to seem warmer than a PC laptop. Plastic doesn't transfer heat nearly as nicely, but even so, if you touch a pentium 4 based laptop that has been running for a while, it'll be just as warm. And, they're twice as thick, to accomodate the fans to cool that bugger!
As for the logic board, i think the main issue is memory being bumped out of place, or improperly installed... I'm sure that if some users just took out their memory stick, and carefully tried to reinstall it, they'd work fine... i'm not saying that the memory issue is a fluke, rather I think that some people may see that other people have had logic board failure in the past, and automatically assume that is there problem... Regardless, i've added my own 1gb stick from Crucial, and it works fine.
The powerbook 15" is an awesome choice... I'm still learning how to use the OS, which is a little scary at first (since i'm used to things being far more complicated (WINDOWS)), but it's very intuitive, a pleasure to use, and a great machine... Goodluck with your decision

Long-time Eudora user, rookie Mail user--have questions, need help!

Hi, all!
As the subject heading says, I've been using Eudora for a very long time (way past its shelf life) and have been playing around with Mail off and on over the past year. (Now, in Eudora's defense, the expiration date on it was a "Best by..." not a "Use by..." date and it's been working fantastically for years! )
I recently started to plunge into Mail more deeply and have a couple of questions.
1. Drafting vs. queuing.
I am used to Eudora's system where a bunch of drafted messages sit in an Outbox. They stay there until I flag QUEUE for the ones I'll eventually be mailing.
It's a good system. A quick look at the flags in the Outobx lets me know which I still to need to work on, and which ones are ready to go out (or need a final review before sending). The user then selects "Send Messages" and it e-mails the ones queued in the Outbox, but not the remaining draft emails that haven't yet been queued.
How do I set up something like that in Mail?
Right now, all I have is a list of draft messages and I cannot tell which ones are still really drafts and which are ready to be sent!
2. Work-around to try and mirror Eudora's system.
I tried creating a new mailbox called Queue, in which I can park the emails I've done editing. Of course, the problem with such a scheme is that when I want to send messages, I either have to put them back into the Drafts mailbox, from where I can select and send everything (including ones I haven't finished editing!), or drag them into Mail's Outbox where they go out instantly. That's a little freaky and I can see disasters happening (emails going out when I'm wanting to drag other messages to a different mailbox).
3. Disable auto-sending?
Is there a way of turning off and on the Outbox's automatic sending action? That could be the simplest solution for me. I'd really like to send messages only via a menu command--yet, from I've determined, Mail's Send menu command will send any messages selected in the Draft mailbox. Again, I see screw-ups with that as the wrong draft could be selected and Mail would send it out.
4. Display of badges for mailboxes.
This is more of a curiosity, but is there a way of having a user-created mailbox show how many e-mails are in there?
Solutions?
What do you all do as to work flow? How do you go about creating and revising a bunch of e-mails, but only sending out certain ones? And ensuring that only the ones you want to go out, go out?!

Thank you for posting all this info. Unfortunately i have no idea how to do flags and how to use a smart mailbox as a place to store emails i am not ready to send. Eudora is vastly superior in all the things it empowers the user to quickly and easily do, in the traditional Apple spirit of intuitiveness, clear direct normal (not esoteric) communicatioin and user friendliness.
about three weeks ago i was pretty much forced into Mountain Lion bcause my old MacBook is barely functioning at all and i got a new MacBook Pro. So, good bye Eudora that i've used since 1995, only because i couldn't find another mail program that did what it does. I wonder why there aren't others. I've tried MailForge, it's a great attempt but it seems to have run out of steam and isn't working well enough.
I am using Mail and Gmail. The result is i'm suffering a whole range of loss of functionality in email, and am not getting a lot of messages, they are here somewhere but i can't always find them, i have to go to my old computer, enduring a kind of freeze where a beachball is a sign of progress, a trackpad that barely works for drag and drop anymore and a battery that needs reaplacing. i think the hard drive is failing. but i still need it to retrieve my email reliably, to a poiint where i see i 'm going to have to put money into it so it can keep working, for email. what a poor solution. I am trying as best i can to have Mail communicate better.
i just wanted to thank you for your encouraging posts and giving me something to follow up on to try to use, to address this one of many loss of Eudora problems. Why wouldn't a mail program give you the option to queue mail? Why take away options and functionality? sorry, i'm just ranting because i've had a very frustrating last few weeks related to numerous new OS challenges, but email is the only really serious one.
I really like your idea of badges to show number of new messages, i think that's what you meant, you didn't say 'new', but another great and helpful thing about Eudroa is sorting mail into mail boxes and opening those mailboxes that get new mail each time you download mail, so you kow what's new. You can immediately see it. In Apple Mail, i find i have to dig through each of the 12 'on my mac' mailboxes/folders i created so far, to see if there is new mail in them. A lot of extra trouble for something that a superior email program can do for you.

in the work section on the main page there are forward and
back buttons to navigate the movie clips through the frames to show
the different images... much like a photo slideshow preset in
flash...

Right now the next and back button navigate the adscontent
movie clip as needed... but...
I need for the adsprev_btn to return the main timeline to the
"work" section when it is pressed if it is at frame 1 of the
adscontent movie clip... so the back button returns you to the work
section
I guess it is going to be an if else statement but am a
little lost... i guess if it is on frame one then return to work
else prev.Frame?

Newbie here needs help with features.

I hope I'm doing this right.
Problem #1
With my storm when I make a call the key pad for the phone goes away. This is problematic especially when I'm checking voice mail. It is prompting me to enter my access code and i'm trying to get the key pad to display itself. what do I do? Can I lock the key pad to display while making calls?
Problem #2
When entering a contact or a message that has several strings of number how do I get the Number pad to stay displayed so it does not toggle back to the alpha key pad?
Problem #3
Removing unused applications.How do I do it?
Problem#4
I am on an enterprise server how can I remove email accounts? I get two displays of the same emails comming in. They all come into a application marked messages then I get a second display with just messages for the email address showing on the application box. It is confusing and a duplication.

It is always helpful to receive help, to include your exact BlackBerry device model # and carrier name, so that when you have a question, that information won't need to be asked up front. Also, stating your device Operating System version is normally another common question, found on your BlackBerry at Options > About, third line down, looks like "v4.x.x.xxx"
1. When on the call, yo'll see at the lower left a keypad symbol. Press it to bring up the keypad.
If that doesn't appear or work, answer those above. There was one OS release way back that had a glitch of not allowing the keypad to show at all when calling.
2. Message.. as in email? Press and hold the lower left numeric symbol on the keypad a full second the numeric keypad will lock in. Press the Alpha character at the lower left again to revert back.
3. Most can be removed simple at Options > Advanced > Applications. Scroll to the application name and press Menu > Delete. Later OS releases will be at Options > Applications.
4. Answer my questions above about the model and OS. The Storm1 and 2, according to the OS release vary on this.

Newb here, need help! just check out what i have, make reccomendations please!!

Windows xp 32-bit,
4 gigs ram,
dual sli 7200 nvidia cards,
60gb internal hardrive, 1.5 terabyte external hard drive (brand new, very empty)
Recorded 24p and 60i on a Canon XL-2 (miniDV)
IEEE 1394 firewire connected from pc to uploading device. Unfortunatly i borrowed the xl-2 from school, and am trying to capture from a panasonic pv-gs36 i borrowed from a friend (only friend with a device that records with a miniDV cam).
I have been working fine on premier, very smooth when i import files, but when i tried to capture, as soon as i hit capture it freezes my whole set up, i have to manually restart my pc. I need to capture and export these clips to quicktime so i can edit in final cut at school (as requested by my instructer) the project is due in exactly one week, and the edit bays are always full which is why i opted for capturing at home with premier cs4.
Im in panic mode now though, cause of this freeze issue. I'll have access to an xl-2 for the remainder of the week if the panasonic cam is the problem, but if not, please let me know!! ill go out and buy a new graphics card if that really is the issue... but i cant afford the quadro....which is why i opted for adobe premier instead of avid.
im thinking its freezing because i recorded on an xl-2 and am trying to capture on this panasonic cam... could this be why?
i installed premier on the 60 gig internal hard drive...should i uninstall it and install it on the external 1.5 tb one? should my settings be a certain way when i start a new project? Please help out a stressed out student during finals week! I will be super grateful to any info anyone can provide. thanks again for all your time and effort =)

I'm unsure if the external drive is eSATA. I did buy it a few days ago 1.5 tb for 129.99 at fry's...good deal. What are the advantages of having an eSATA? The drive i have is a seagate Free agent-Desk external drive, model number st315005fda2e1-rk

Again, total noob here...
the external is USB 2.0, and yea, i only have 1 firewire port. Also, something i failed to mention is...I actually run my computer off my 42 inch samsung hd tv (720p native). When i was installing the whole production suite it asked me to get a moniter with higher resolution, but the click top continue installing anyway button was there so i went for it. Could this be the problem?
I'm fairly sure i recorded in standard play with 2 channel audio with the canon, so im starting suspect it is this dinky panasonic dv cam thats causing me all this headache.

annnnd finally, no input on the cards? I was thinking that was going to be the problem for sure. The cards are great for gaming but im not really sure what kind of cards are (at least decent) for editing and capturing.

No aim in my ichat (a newbie questions and help)

I am relatively new to ichat as I have never needed it use it untill the girlfriend took a job on a cruise line. With that I bought my imac g5 about 3 years ago and never messed with ichat. Now that I wanted to start using it I started with the apple ichat 101 guide. I created an aim account, made sure it works (at least I think it does as I have no buddies on it yet), then started up ichat. In the first time tutorial it says a start up screen will appear to register your .mac or aim account. When I started ichat, this initial setup screen didnt pop up. It just opened the program and aim runs in the background. I then go into prefferences and accounts under the file menu and the only thing listed is bonjour. I cant seem to figure out how to change it to the aim account. I believe I am running ichat 2.1 (what ever came with the first gen imac) and downloaded the latest version (4.7) of aim yesterday. Could this be a problem? I am also using a wirless router, but my internet seems to work. I see that there are lots of posts about router settings on this board for aim accounts, but dont know if thats an issue either. Forgive my ignorance as I am also typing this on my windows computer at work and am not sure exactly which version of ichat I have installed on the computer at home. Anyhelp would be gratly appreciated as I am new to the ichat world. Recommendations on a camera would also b helpful since my computer does not have isight and am looking for a cam. I've discovered that if I hit 'Apple Key + Q' that closes properly - is there no way to close via the mouse?

CS4/AS2.0 Newbie Question.. help please?

Hey all, I'm a newbie on the forum and in Flash.
I've used it before, made my pages into scenes, and
everything worked fine. Apparently, this doesn't work anymore (I
used an earlier version of Flash) in CS4, and everyone is
recommending to use frame labels. This doesn't work either.
This is a screenshot of my site right now.
The ActionScript is the exact same in all three frames on the
actions layer you see in the screenie.
All I want is when clicking on the AboutUs button and
WhatIsHypnosis button, that they go to the specified frame labels.
The only one that works is the AboutUs button. I can click on
it and it loads the content that its supposed to,but the home (the
logo) and the second button do not work. They are clickable, just
nothing happens.
I've tried everything I can think of and that I have been
able to find.
Changing the type of frame label has no effect.
Help please? I've been trying to fix this for a good 6-7
hours.

I have no clue what it was..
I changed some frame labels around, renamed a few buttons,
renamed some instances, and it magically worked. :)

Captivate 8 Quiz question need help!!!

Hi,
I am trying to create a quiz in captivate 8. When the user answers the question correctly, i want correct caption to show ( which is showing ) but i also want a trophy (image) to appear to give the user a little motivation to go to the next question.
If user selects the wrong choice of the multiple choice question twice, they will be directed back to the slide where the answer is ( remediation ) and from there i want the next button to change to 'return back to quiz button'
Thats how i want quiz to be like.
I have created the advance action to pop up the trophy (image) when user is right but then remediation doesnt work, means when they come back from the section where the answer is, they cant select the right answer as the quiz has not been reset.
These are grave issues i am dealing with. If there is any solution to this, please kindly help me out. I would be really grateful if there is anyone to sort this out.

Thankyou for your reply. Yes i tried that but once i preview that particular slide, the 'next button' takes time to go to the next slide ( like i have to click more than once to go to the next slide) and it is happening on every slide that has remediation on.
So i thought i make a 'return button' that is only visible when the user comes back from the quiz. Not sure how to do that as i am already using advance action on quiz slides, On success on the quiz slide to show the correct caption and the trophy. And on last attempt they go back to the slide where the answer is but once they come back they can't select the answer ( its locked ) and remediation slides does not go forward as quickly as other content slides.
I hope you understand what i mean ?

I think yawmark is in broken-record mode today. Not just today. I keep a fairly large file of
cut-n-paste responses accumulated while addressing
the same issues over and over and over.... I'm not at work today, so I have a lot of time to hang out here (too cold to do anything outside), and that particular response about spelling things out just seemed to pop up a lot today (no doubt caused by the posters who popped up today). A file of cut-and-paste responses is definitely a handy thing to have around here...I don't have such a file myself...I only just started here a couple of months ago, but the questions do indeed get repetitive! My cell phone only receives SMS messages--it doesn't have the capability to send them--so I don't write any SMS messages. Even if I did, I can't imagine why people think it is okay to abbreviate everything here into SMS-speak.

Firstly may i say hi to every one and now to my problem
ok your all going to think im a complete wazzuk
im new to the blackberry (not a clue) i was given an 8800 which didnt come with any disks
but was told i can dl them on this website , which i did..the latest desktop application
anyways....it told me i need to update my phone and like an **bleep** i pressed next
about half way thru the eraseing and downloading my pc came up with an ERROR
and now im left with just a white screen with a small box in the middle and a cross going thru it
can some 1 please tell me i can fix this and how or have i just broken the thing for ever
ive looked on the pc to see if it had backuped up the device(which i dont think it had)
so there must be a way i can download a new os on the blackberry
please can any 1 help

Newbie question - need to improve blurry logo

I have no background in image editing, so any help or information would be greatly appreciated.
My company is trying to have some signs printed with our logo, but the only logo we have on file is very small, so any re-sizing results in very blurry edges. The image is in .png format, and the pixel dimensions are 489 by 244. Based on my limited understanding, this translates to an image of about 1.5" by 3", which is not nearly big enough for our needs. I've been browsing the forums to look for methods to increase the resolution of the logo for printing, or to smooth the edges (it's a fairly basic design), but I'm not sure which tool would be best. I'm currently downloading the Photoshop trial to play with it, does anyone have advice on where to start?

Vector artwork is superior to raster artwork because it is smooth at any size, instead of being resolution/size dependent (create it once and use it at any size for any purpose).
You should have a look at Illustrator or similar application (more) specifically made for vector artwork.
In any case, there is no way to avoid recreating the logo, and the present sample can only be used as a blurry template.
Unless it is possible to dig up the original (vector) artwork. It is worth a real attempt to find it.
To get suggestions for recreating the logo, you may post the image in the relevant forum(s), and ask for help.

Newbie who needs help!

I require someone who has a lot of patience as I am a complete dimwit when it comes to computers and I am about to thorw mine out the window. Unfortunately when I brought my mp3 a friend set it all up and i didn't take any notice. I am now trying to download more songs and for some reason nothing is transferring. I have also managed to delete all the previous songs off my player but they are still in the Creative Media Playlist but not on my actual mp3. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To start the thread, you might want to let others know which MP3 player do you have and the current player firmware version.

Newbie really needs help

Hey. i just bought an iMac, and i`m having some trouble. I still don`t understand much of Macs, `cause i just came from windows. So i`m humbly asking for some help.
I wanted to copy my dvds, i have some stuff of my own recorded, with menus and intros, and i wanted to copy from dvd to dvd. How the heck can i do that?! I tried creating an image in .dmg, but it gets too big to record in a simple dvd with 4,7GB. I tried using MacTheRipper, but i could understand nothing about it! It recorded my dvd files in a VOB extension! What the heck is VOB?!
I would really apreciate if someone could explain me from scratch how to do these things...

Popcorn is only for copying video DVDs. It doesn't do CDs. After rebate, Toast 7 is only about $20 more than Popcorn (or $40 before rebate). The only reason I would purchase Popcorn today is if my Mac didn't meet the system requirements for Toast 7 and I had to have an application that can compress ripped dual-layer video DVDs to burn on single-layer discs. Go to Roxio's site and read the description of Toast 7's features and you'll see that the extra $20-40 is well invested.
