Newbie experience

hello Archers,
I am not a linux expert, I installed a bunch of linux distros in the past but I can be easily defined a newbie. I recently built a new desktop PC and decided to completely switch to linux (no dual boot and no VM ). I tried many distros before landing on archlinux but now I have a fully functional, light and fast desktop environment.
I needed 3 days to:
- understand archlinux "philosophy" (day 1);
- install the base system, cpufreq, gnome, alsa (day 1);
- install compiz fusion, extras, eye-candies, plugins, printers, camera (day 2);
- learn to build my own packages, update HPLIP package from 1.7.4 (in the repos) to 2.2.6 (latest stable version) (today)
Compared to ready-to-go distributions like Ubuntu it's a lot of time, but probably now that I know arch better I would need no more than a couple of hours, plus -repeat- I am quite a newbie.
What's the meaning of this post? Well, just wanted to encourage users evaluating the possibility of installing arch linux to give it a spin, it's not (just) a distro for gurus, anyone can install it and it gives great satisfaction. It's one of the few distros that lets you configure the system exactly the way you want it and it's not bloated with dozens useless applications/deamons/modules/etc.
I don't understand why arch is not more "mainstream" (and reading the forums the developers seem proud of it), anyway to me this is the way linux should be.

You live and Florence and you're running Arch?  You must be in heaven.
Like you, I tried most of the mainstream distributions before coming to Arch.  I didn't expect to but I've become a dedicated Arch user ever since.  I'm not even the type of person who likes to build things themself (I'd rather have everything I need installed for me) but I've found that the system runs much faster and cleaner when you do it yourself and you usually know what's going on at all times, so I'm very happy I did it.  And the best thing is: I don't have to do it all over again when there's a new release, just a simple pacman -Syu does the trick.
Good luck with the rest of your endeavors!

  • Flex3 and CF8

I am a Flex newbie, experience ColdFusion user.
I am using the trial version of Flex Builder 3 to create a
    new project (File/New/Project/FlexBuilder/Flex Project).
In the New Flex Project window, I enter the project name,
select "web application" as the application type, and select
"ColdFusion" as the server technology. The "Use remote object
access service" is checked, and "LiveCycle Data Services" is
    selected.
In the next screen - in the server location, I enter
"Standalone" as the installation type, the webroot is
"c:\inetpub\wwwroot," and the root url is "
    http://127.0.0.1" (I'm using IIS, so
I'm not using port 8500). This is the screen where I see error at
the top - "LiveCycle Data Services is not installed at the
specified location." But I made sure LiveCycle Data Services was
installed when I installed ColdFusion8, and "Enable Remote Adobe
LiveCycle Data Management access" is checked in the ColdFusion
    Administator panel.
Also, I went back in the New Project dialog and changed the
server option to "ColdFusion Flash Remoting", and I was able to
create a new project. However, now I cannot connect to my
datasources using RDS configuration - I keep getting the error
    "Unable to connect to localhost".
What is missing? Any help on either of these topics would be
appreciated. If I can get this to work, it would justify the
    purchase of the full version.

I assume from your post that you installed ColdFusion 8 onto
your local machine because you're using 127.0.0.1 as your root URL.
During the installation you have to select to install RDS (which
isn't checked by default) AND LiveCycle Data Services; LCDS prompts
for a serial number, but defaults to a "free" single-CPU license
    after 120 days.
I had to completely uninstall Coldfusion 8, and reinstall
(twice) to make sure EVERYTHING was checked/selected for Flex 3 to
be happy. Try removing the "localhost" default entry for RDS and
creating your own with the IP address of your PC. Since you're
running IIS (locally, right?) then RDS should be looking on port
80, and I think the RDS entry for "localhost defaults to using port
8500. Once you give it your PC's IP and the password for RDS that
you create when you installed CF8, you should be able to do a
successful test to ensure that RDS is even listening. When you
selected to install to IIS (rather than install CF8's own web
services) did you also specify "All Websites"?

  • Return to ACR basic panel

After making a local adjustment in ACR, the basic panel disappears. How do I return to the basic panel? Thanks, Richard

Ok, I guess I misunderstood what you intially said. I'm glad it's cleared up.
I agree some things in PS are unintuitive. My newbie experience was going to a copy shop to use their scanner. Photoshop was the default editor for their computers. I had to call one of the staff over, I couldn't figure out how to get the scan started.
I expected "File > Scan..." not "File > Import > Twain...".

  • Integrated with Edge Reflow

Like import Layout from Muse to Reflow maybe ? So we don't need to do double job to create the same layout
    *just a Muse-newbie experience*

yes that true, changing it later will be problematic. But if we have the break points already figured out and design finalized we just then have to open it in Muse and then add the features that muse has like scrolling effects and such. life would have been really simpler if that media query handle feature from EdgeReflow is placed in Muse. On the other hand i don't mind if reflow has the scroll effects and all the cool things Muse has. Its possible to do a really nice responsive website with reflow and edge animate and then polish your site with dreamweaver and publish it to BC. Just that i like the features of Muse and the ease of designing but it lacks the true responsiveness we need, i know you can give full width and try make it look like responsive and then you have 2 more websites to finish, the mobile and tablet versions of the website. So its a lot of work, it doesn't really make it easy to keep up with this evolving web design industry. So i think i will stick with edge reflow, dreamweaver and edge animate till Muse becomes responsive fully.

  • UTC/UTP newbie seeks experience of *REAL* NVP examples.

    hello.
the NVP example given in the vanilla Meta install works. yet the example given already has the name as the LDAP attribute name (seems little point as it could well be LDIF)
I face a mail system which dumps output in its own weird tag/value format.
My question/request is how is the task.cfg file modified where the NVP input file looks something like:
    =USER 'Green Phantom'
    =SUR Phantom
    =STREET1 'Uudenmaankatu 2'
    =STREET2 '00101 Helsinki'
    =CUSTOM(12) 'Senior Registrar'
    =BASE green.phantom
    =IDOMAIN mycompany.com
My immediate reaction is to write a C program to convert this into LDIF yet if this Meta UTP/UTC is universal then I ought to be able to fiddle with the task.cfg file... but HOW?
any tips, advice pointers to documentation.

    Try:
    UseHeaderInfo=true
    attributenamespresentin=DATA
    AttributeNameSeparator=" "
    LineFormat= =USER:cn,=SUR:sn, (etc)
The LineFormat translates your attr's into LDAP attrs.
Hope this will get you further

  • My Snow Leopard Install Experiences

First of all, let it be known that I’m a relative newcomer to the world of Macs, having bought my first last December. However, I’ve been around computers for fifteen years and class myself as pretty sad on the geek scale and run two Windows and two Linux machines here.
With that in mind, it should be noted that I may have missed something obvious when I upgraded, or that computers really can be annoying sometimes and mileage really does vary.
I’ve got a Macbook Aluminium, upgraded to 4GB RAM and 500GB HDD. It’s been running perfectly since the day I bought it, but being a newbie I added and removed countless applications until it got pretty close to what I thought was ideal for my day to day use.
Before I upgraded to Snow Leopard, I did two backups. A block level backup with CCC, and my usual Full+Incremental backups to another external drive, again with CCC. The first drive was stashed for emergency purposes, after both were tested bootable.
    *Standard Upgrade
*
Went well, apart from a couple of apps that weren’t on any of the problem lists I’d looked at before the upgrade. I accepted defaults, including all the languages I’d never need, and likewise the printers.
On reboot, it was fine and everything seemed significantly faster, but putting the machine to sleep took an age; minutes in fact. Returning from sleep, ejecting external media, and connecting to wireless weren’t improved either. In fact, I’d say that returning from sleep and the wireless connection actually took longer.
Embedded Flash had the fans on my laptop kicking in within seconds, even though I’ve had to push the machine pretty hard in the past to hear the fans at all.
It just didn’t feel right at all, so safe in the knowledge that I have backups that can be quickly restored, I tried a clean install from a running machine.
    *Clean Install from Desktop
*
Easy, and this time I opted not to install any of the printers or extra languages. Machine absolutely flew on reboot.
However, sleep and resume problems remained. Wireless connections were sluggish and even disconnected once; not something I’m used to.
Plugged my printer in - HP C4380 - and drivers were duly downloaded and installed. Printed a test page and the drivers crashed!
Flash problems remain, even after repairing permissions on a Flash update.
Battery life was down to two hours!
Didn’t get as far as re-installing old apps or data.
At this point I was pondering going back to Leopard, but I had another couple of hours to spare, so I tried a clean install from boot.
    *Clean Install from Boot
*
Booted from the install CD. Deleted the existing partition and recreated and formatted.
Installed all the printers, none of the languages I didn’t need, Rosetta (NX requirement until they release V4 native).
After every major software package install, I’ve done a permissions repair and the only update that’s caused any problems is Flash.
Other than that, this is perfect. Copying my data back from the CCC backup was a piece of cake, and being a clean install meant I could be selective about what apps I put back.
No fans, no jittery Flash videos, four hour battery life, instant connections to wireless, fifteen seconds to sleep with more apps open than I care to count. No printer crashes, either network or local drivers. Machine has been running for a week without a reboot.
Today I formatted the drive containing my old Leopard block copy backup and backed up Snow Leopard.
    Conclusions

Well, none that are immediately obvious because I’m fully aware that the final solution which worked for me makes very little sense from a logical point of view.
I just wanted to share this in case there are those out there who are deeply frustrated and want to try something else before giving up and going back to Leopard.
Of course, this really is only for the people who have the time to mess about like this, and of course it’s only safe to play around if you have the backups available.
I’ve never been a fan of OS upgrades in general, but I have to say that I probably could have lived with the very first upgrade I did and researched the problems I met with or waited for fixes.
However, that I took the third option did make me wonder about a few things, and it’s also been a good learning experience.
As we say in the UK, this is just my two bob’s worth, and I certainly wouldn’t advocate taking this approach unless you have time, patience, and more time. Particularly in light of the fact that the third options being such a massive improvement makes no immediate sense whatsoever.
    Unless you know otherwise...
PS: Just one annoyance for me. Those bloody icons in the expanding grids are *FAR TOO BIG*, so let’s please have the option to change them.

The big deal that I see in the 3rd install was that you wiped the drive and reformatted. Maybe the drive had issues exaggerated with the Installation of SL.
Did you ever use Boot Camp when you were playing around with installing and uninstalling apps? Some folks have found that the installer does not like HDDs which had a previous BC partition that was later removed, especially if it was not removed properly.

  • My experiences of importing different formats into IMovie...!!

I’ve been through a lot of pain with IMovie for the last 6 months, and cracked it a couple of days ago. I therefore feel the need to write about my experiences.
I have lots of old footage on:-
    1. DV tape
    2. HI8 tapes
    3. Sony mini-DVDs
    4. DVDs
    5. Sony standard def hard disk camcorder files.
    1. DV tape
This was a joy to import. OK, so I had to invest a small amount of cash to buy a new cheapie DV camcorder (as my old one broke years ago), but the import itself was easy. Just connect the camcorder, the import window appears, and away to go. Events are imported with the correct date and time, and it even creates a new event for different days imported.
    2. HI8 tapes
As I’ve only got a few of these, I decided to ‘cheat’, so I’ve recorded them onto DVDs using my domestic DVD recorder sitting under my TV. So the problem is shifted from HI8 tapes onto DVDs.
    3. Sony mini-DVDs
I’ve been trying to crack this issue for months. Clips are imported in random order, even though they are shown in the correct order in the preview. Hopefully it will get sorted. See the following thread:-
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9404421&tstart=0
    4. DVDs
Haven’t tried this yet, until the mini-DVD issue is sorted. I might go down the road of converting the VIDEO_TS folders into DV files using MPEG Streamclip from squared5.com but I’d rather wait and import them ‘properly’ as the software intended.
    5. Sony standard def hard disk camcorder files.
    Now this is the biggie…..
I had about 1,000 MPEG2 files on my hard disk, that I’ve moved from my camcorder over the years. To my annoyance, when I switched from a PC to the Mac, I needed to buy the MPEG add-on to Quicktime. OK, so no big deal, but even then, all I could get was the video with no sound. After weeks of digging about, I found out that the reason there was no sound is because apparently Quicktime can’t handle MPEG files with AC3 dolby digital sound. As all of my files are recorded in this format, this was a major hurdle.
I then dug around and discovered that on the Sony CD that comes with the camcorder, there is a utility to down mix the AC3 audio to stereo. But it can only do one file at a time – no good for 1,000 files.
Even so, I tried a few files, and yes – they now played under Quicktime WITH audio.
But when doing an import into IMovie 09, the files are greyed out and cannot be selected. So back to the drawing board...
I then looked into various bits of software, finally deciding to get MPEG Streamclip, in order to convert the files in something more Apple friendly.
I did lots of experiments over many weeks in converting files to different formats for import into IMovie, and even though some of them looked excellent, when exporting to different sized export files (e.g. IPod, AppleTV), some of them had artifacts and shimmering all over the place.
Reluctantly I took the helpful advice of someone to convert them into DV files. I say ‘reluctantly’ because the files are HUGE. So much so, I then shelled out (even) more cash on a Drobo to store all the converted DV files.
    Next problem...
Because MPEG Streamclip converts the files into DV files, the original date and time information is lost. This is a real pain and means IMovie thinks all the files are 2009.
I then purchased the excellent ‘A better finder renamer’ and ‘A better finder attributes’, to see if I could rename the files. Unfortunately there is no easy way to say ‘change the date/time on the new DV file to be the same as the old MPEG file’ a thousand times over.
I then approached a company about writing a bespoke automator script to do this for me. But it was going to be expensive.
I then set about manually changing some of the dates of the files.
Even then, IMovie was getting confused during the import, and putting some of the scenes in the wrong order. Looks like because MPEG Streamclip is so quick at doing the conversion to DV, that some of the files have the same time stamp, so IMovie gets confused.
I then looked into software to slow my Mac down, so that MPEG Streamclip would run slower (I wanted to guarantee that each file out of the thousand that it created was created in a different MINUTE to the last file). This was proving fruitless however.
I then had useful discussions with Appleman1958 - see thread -
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1979095&tstart=0
who suggested that I could rename the files with the IMovie notation, i.e.
    clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss.ext
I even worked out how to do this automatically using ‘a better finder renamer’.
But there was still one more issue.
When the files were imported into IMovie, the thousand files would just come in as one event (unlike importing DV tape where it splits into days).
Being unhappy with this, I had a brain wave and decided to try something else. AppleMan1958 helpfully suggested putting the files into different folders “behind IMovie’s back”, something I was open to doing, but wanted to try something else first...
I resurrected my old camcorder from my attic, and filmed a few minutes of footage.
I then plugged the camcorder into my Mac. To my AMAZEMENT, the import window appeared in IMovie (just like it does for DV tapes), AND the audio played as well as the video. I was absolutely staggered.
I then noticed an ‘archive’ button within the import window, so decided to press it. It then copied the MPEG file from the camcorder onto the hard disk. But it did so in the structure of the original camcorder (i.e. it creates a series of specially named folders, just like on the camcorder).
I then decided to copy all 1,000 of my MPEG2 files into the new special structure that had just been created.
All 1,000 files were then accessible using the standard import function!!!!
(By the way – I’m sure people already know this information – and I’m in no way taking credit for any of it, as it’s probably been suggested by other people in the past).
I’ve now happily imported all of the files.
(Interestingly, a couple of times it said ‘Error!’ on importing some of the files. The third time I tried it, it worked. How random!!)
What amazes me is that now the Mac CAN seemingly handle MPEG video AND ac3 audio, whereas it can’t handle it by double-clicking the files in the finder. I can’t see why this should be the case. Also, it’s really annoying that when importing the files from hard disk, the files are totally greyed out – but it CAN import them by fooling IMovie into thinking it’s a camera archive.
Ofcourse now I’ve spent all this extra money, it’s time to dust off the old camcorder and use that for a few more years, until I pluck up the courage to go hi-def...
Hope you enjoyed reading – thought I’d share my experiences incase there are any newbies out there with similar issues. It’s annoying that Apple make it seem like childsplay to connect your new shiny camcorder to IMovie, but seem give little help in the more technical issues.
Now, if only they’ll fix the mini-DVD import bug too...!
    Brad

    Hi Brad,
when you use Streamclip to convert media, use the same name for the exported file (only with different extension). Then make a shell script calling
    touch -r origFileName.mp2 newFileName.mov
This will copy the exact time and date from origFileName.mp2 to newFileName.mov
The script may look like this (save the file, give an exec permission to it and call it in the right directory):
    #!/bin/bash
    for i in `ls *.mp2`; do
    NEWNAME=$(ls "$i" | sed -e 's/mp2/mov/')
    touch -r $i $NEWNAME
    done
You may need to adapt the extension names used (in the example above .mp2 is input file to get the date/time stamp from and .mov is the output file to stamp.
    Have fun and cheers

  • Newbie - setting up small home network

I'm hoping to get some advice & suggestions. I'm basically a newbie at teching w/macs - I've done some pc teching over the years and am a MS Office wiz. I'm helping an artist friend out with their home office set up after a bad experience with a Computer School Student. I'm trying to connect a week old iMac w/ a G4 laptop and an older 2004 iMac (no airport card). The office has Verizon DSL w/a linksys router --- the internet functions are fine on all machines, the new iMac & laptop connect for file sharing as well although I have the prob of not knowing the admin password and the owner can't remember it. The old 04iMac I've hotwired/hardwired through the router and get internet & email ok (its a bit slow, probly normal).
File sharing - am I correct in assuming that the hardwired 04iMac can't do both functions (ie file share & internet) at the same time? There is space for an airport to be installed - IF the owner chose to do so, would that change the functionality (ie could I then do the file sharing & internet at the same time?).
Password issue - ok with the laptop, I searched the files and found instructions on how to reset the password. I tried it but didn't get the prompts that the article said I would in nvram (geez I hope that's right or I'll look like a dork). I wasn't prompted for my password. I did safely get out of that screen (boy I was nervous) the passwords remained the same. I'm wondering if I missed something. I wasn't sure if I really was booted from the CD as the article stated, though I did hold the C key down while restarting?
Any comments will be much appreciated. I'm doing pretty good and LOVE mac's. Can't wait to get my own probly MacBook Pro this year (I use the BF's off and on for now)
    Thanks in advance,
    Simply,
    Lesa

Thank you, I got the password issue solved and the laptop and New iMac network/talk to each other fine and I can print from either machine. The 04 iMac is hard wired into the Linksys router (DSL internet service) ... I can't figure out how to connect to the other machines or the printer. I have the printer chosen in Utilities/Print Center, I have the Apple Talk - Make Apple Talk Active chosen, Location is set on Automatic. In File Sharing, I have Personal file sharing and Printer sharing checked. I have 2 accounts set up on the 04 iMac. When I type a test page in Text Edit and hit the print que, the job appears to be sent to the printer although it didn't show up in the Print Center window and almost immediately the Text Edit program crashes, this also happened in Safari as I attempted to print a test internet page and happens from both Accounts, the Admin account and my other User Account.
I also have had some difficulty with keeping the DSL/internet connection running on the other User Account - though it seems to be working ok today.
One other - non-networking issue is that in Mail for my other User Account, often when the machine automatically checks for or sends email we are asked for the password although we keep checking the box to save the password and I'm pretty sure I set Mail up so that we wouldn't have to re-enter the password.
Thanks in advance - I appreciate your help and experience as well as having a place to ask questions and reach out for help.
    Simply,
    Lesa

  • Newbie needs help with MS exchange / MS Push email

I just got an iPhone 3G a few days ago. Heretofore, all my experience has been with HTC, Motorola and Blackberry phones. As a non-technical person trying to make Pust work through my network is very confusing.
I read the instructions / bulletins and finally made email and calendar work (sort of). It only works on WiFi and then I have to manually update mail as it does not always Push.
Does the iPhone Push setup only work with Server 2003 / Push via WiFi? If not, can anyone give me step by step instructions on how to make it work with 3G and no WiFi?
If possible, please be specific as I am a newbie trying to make this work for my small company.
If I can't find a solution I'll have to get rid of this and go back to something that works.
It seems that Apple is making it very difficult to set this phone up for Push application
    Thanks,
    Gary

The iPhone works fine over cellular. You did mention a certificate - I am going to guess that this may be the issue.
If you open Safari on the iPhone and connect to your OWA, do you get a warning? When you viewed the cert in IE, is it self-signed? If so you need to get it on the iPhone. The easiest way is to set up gmail or something similar on iPhone and email it to yourself.
when it come in email your iPhone will immediately recognize it as a file that you can import it. Select it and import it, then you should be able to connect to your Outside Exchange server.

  • How to increase your battery health - anyone with similar experiences?

this is my very own self made instruction of "how to increase your battery health"
it is the procedure how i have done it serverall times on my powerbook g4 12".
    my stats: 374 cycles, health 86% (3790 of 4400mAh)
age of my mac: 57month (battery bit newer)
**if you to try this: it is on your own risk!**
**this may not be suitable for mac newbies**
**be sure to read this twice before you do it once!**
    you will need:
-a pocket lamp or comparable light (to see anything on your sreen when it is dark --> light from the back through apple logo)
-coconutbattery (coconut-flavour.com/coconutbattery) or comparable programm to track your battery information in realtime
    -activity monitor
-cool enviroment (to ensure your fans don't have to work that much)
    -some time and patience
    the intructions:
step1: load your mac until the orange light turns green
    step2: disconnect the power adapter
step3: use your mac until 15-25% battery life (track this information in your menu bar)
step4: slow down your activities. the order of the following actions depend on your usage of your mac:
__close programms that use lots of cpu/gpu to ensure the fans slow down to 0rpm (!!)
__turn off everything that needs battery power: airport / bluetooth / speakers / etc.
    __eject dvd or cd
__close all programms with important data
__eject idisk / .dmg files in your finder (this is not only a matter of data security)
__dissonnected from peripherals such as ethernet / internet / mouse / keyboard
    __use lower brightness level
__open activity monitor to ensure that your hard drive activity is very low, may be you need to close more active programms, close activity monitor when hard drive activity is very low
__open system preferences >> energy saver preferences >> choose longest battery life
when your are ready with those actions go on and ensure you are able to connect to power adapter with your mac quickly (be able to charge - don't do it yet!)
step5: be patient. now it should take some time until your battery level goes down to 3-5%
now there should be no programm running.
do not open any programm now!
do not have a look at your dashboard!
now your mac should be really quiet:
    -no fans (0rpm!)
    -nearly no hard drive activity!!
-->> if this not the case break go on with step 11&12, try again in a week or two
-->> if you are ready go on with step6
step6: open coconutbattery und use the lowest brightness level
play with your trackpad to ensure your screensaver won't start. waste time until you are at 1-2% battery life.
step7: take your lamp and spot through the transperent apple logo, position your coconut battery window somehow that you can see the current battery charge und the maxium battery charge in the spot of your lamp through the apple logo.
step8: go from the lowest brightness level to the level under the lowest brightness level (a dark screen)
step9: watch your current battery charge carefully und keep on playing with your trackpad to ensure your screensaver won't start.
step10: there is kind of battery buffer made of approximately 1% (once when my "current battery charge" was 3624mAh and this kind of buffer was at 36mAh)
to empty this kind of battery buffer takes much longer as you might expect!
when your current battery charge turns under this kind of battery buffer, your maximum battery charge should change. hopefully it is higher or stays the same. when it is lower now: i'm sorry - i have warned you. may be you have to go through this 'how to' more carefully!?
step11: plug in your power adapter before the battery is cero!
step12: load until the orange light turns green
step13: if it was helpful do not repeat it more than once a week, better once a month
    -->webcal://www.apple.com/batteries/images/notebook_icalreminder.ics
    (via: http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html)
anyone with similar experiences about increasing battery health!?
(yes, i'm sorry for my poor english, i've tried my best)

Me too! My battery lasts for 10 minutes. It is awful and I am on my 4th power adapter since they keep breaking too.
From coconut battery: Maximum battery charge 310mah, original 4400, age of mac 45 months, 140 cycles.
    From system profile:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 310
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 213
    Amperage (mA): -1205
    Voltage (mV): 11557
    Cycle Count: 140
I went to an apple authorized retailer and they said nothing I can do if it is out of warranty.. is this true?

  • For all the newbies who wants to learn Java

I was a newbie like 4 months ago. i have some skills of OOP in C++ like 2 years back but since then i did'nt took any of programming language courses. I have experience in MSaccess and MYsql. i did my internship Last summer with Tennessee Education Lottery as a Database Analyst. At that time i realized what a Corporate Enviorment looks like. Trust me it was a formal interview and i passed it and they placed me in the IT department to write some scripts for the GUI terminal and at the same time create a Company Security Database. i did completed my project but i had to Learn Mysql. and then i realized Java was getting very popular. alot of people told me in the forums to go Java tutorial but i will not agree to start from the sun tutorial. you can do it only if you have a good or may be medium experience of OOP. it was really tough for me and then this magic guy came on the forum and told me to go on this website if you want to learn Java.
    http://chortle.ccsu.edu/java5/cs151java.html
This site is a brilliant site specially the exercise problems and the quizes really attracted me to Java alot and now i came to realize how easy it is to program in Java rather than C++. Java forums have helped me alot in solving those exercise problems (not with the code but with a good explanation) which was very helpful for me. out of my 210 post i guess i have helped 30 people out and the rest of the questions are regarding those exercises. i came to know encapsulation, inheritance and all that stuff. though i am still not very perfect like i am still having trouble with ComparTo thing but it takes more practice. the more you practice the more you learn. so all the newbies if you really want to learn java even if you dont have any experience in OOp this is the site where you need to start. Hope this will definitely help you alot. thanks to all the Senior members navycoder, captain, paulcw, duffy, turingpest and others also who have helped me in the past. without you i would have not achieved the goal of learning java. now my next step is going to be learn GUI programming Swing. looks fun to me. but at the same time i have my final project for this semester to make on ONline Testing program which will have a database, php scripting and html and xml.
I will post if i have any problems

  • Connecting a kiosk to a server - help out a newbie!

well no exactly a newbie, but sort of
    hey all
i am self-taught and i have pretty good as3 and mxml skills and have worked with Flash Pro and Flex, but only for my own stuff at home. i have only done local AIR stuff that don't require sending and getting data from a server
now someone has asked if i could build him a kiosks/server system, and i want to dive into that
the kiosks would be deployed in stores and have touchscreens displaying pictures, movies, banners and accept user control and data - no problem here
i plan to build his remote controlling software in Flex and the kiosk AIR apps in Flex or Flash pro.
the kiosks should periodically connect to the server to see if updates are available  and download swf, jpeg and movie (mp4? flv?) files to the local filesystem (no live streaming is needed)
also, user created data (forms only) should be sent to the server - i guess xml
since i have no server side or server connection experience could you help me out here - what to investigate further into:
    URLloader?
    Sockets?
    HTTPrequests?
    WEBrequests?
    RemoteObects?
can all this be in as3 alone or do i need stuff like php also?
also, would i be able in the controlling flex app to determine if specific kiosks are offline?
    thanx a million,
    Saar

you can use urlloader to load data from the server but you may also need serer-side code (unless you're hard-coding file names).

  • Latency(ASIO Buffer)Issues, Share Your Support! On Behalf of newbies......!!

I think most of us here gone through these problems. Especially a newbie who just started with his or her home Studio or Composition.
What we face most is a Delay on real time recording of the instruments or if you creating music through MIDInterface. We got a slite delay between Recorded and played Note. Thats the case, I'm also facing now. So i dedicate this thrade if its being popular to a newcomer(newbie) & a expert one who can help out of this problem.
I just bought a EMU0404(pci) sound card. and in reason its not so perfect when i playing it through my Sythesizer (Roland E-16) My PC Configuration is : P-IV 3.0 (HT), MOTHERBOARD D101 With Shared undedicated 256mb of my system RAM, 768mb OF DDR(400) RAM, A SEAGATE 80GB (SATA) HDD.
I have configured Reason (Steps for who dont know how to configure reason : Click Edit > Preferences > Select Audio from Page > Select the proper Audio Card Driver > if DirectX driver then Configure the Slider of Buffer Size , if a Asio Driver Like Emu-Asio, Asio4all or what ever it Installed > configure it through its Control Panel below of that page) at 440 samples of a output latency of 9ms. but still it have a slight latency problem.
And in Fruity Loops it's not working properly too. but we will discuss it later.
    I have some questions Like:
    a)What is Latency Compensation?
b)Do we Exceed the RAM Limit?
    c)Do we Exceed the Processor?
d)Do we have to buy a Workstation?
    and many more...........
I have problem with the Rewired part too, with Nuendo3 or Cubasis too. but still it will be after that.
So Please, The expertise here can share their experiences with us. Many thanks at advance.
Eagerly waiting for your sujjestion too Come....... From "Help Gurus"

You should be able to work using 2-5.8 ms (96-256 samples) w/ your 3GHz/HT PC (IIRC, HT and SATA may cause problems) using software instruments (and even lower settings when using Rolands HW synth as playback device). There are some extra latency coming from MIDI connections:
MIDI keyboard internal response to keystroke -- this is not instantaneous but on a good keyboard should be under 1 msec or so
    MIDI transport latency
    - If you're using MIDI cables, this is 1 msec per note in the chord, before the last note in the chord sounds. In other words, for a 6-note chord, the first note is delayed by 1 msec, the second by 2, etc., to the 6th note that is delayed by 6 msec.
    - If you're using MIDI over a high-speed technology like USB, Firewire, or mLAN, there is still transmission latency but the per-note effect is far, far lower -- probably not measurable.
BTW, ASIO is maybe the best device driver for recording use for every system. IIRC, the E-MU WDM driver is not good at all. When you record using direct monitoring (monitor the dry signal only) then, there are normally no hearable latency but, when you want to monitor the wet signal (software effects/instruments added) then you need to use latency settings around 7 ms (4-10 ms) to get the delay avoided. This is not easily achieved when you have project w/ plenty of tracks and plenty of VST/DX effects/instruments added/in use and you want to play everythin in background while recording a new track).
    Some thoughts for your guestions:
    a) I suppose you'll find a brief explanation for this by googling around. In generally, latency compensation (if available) is done automatically (VST/DX plug-ins) so you don't need to worry 'bout it, or set manually (as like in Sonar 6 for ASIO latency when you set the offset where the recorded data is placed in timeline).
    b) RAM limit ? There are known limits as like 2GB/3GB/4GB for program/data space
--> Cubase has well known (~1.5 GB) RAM limit http://forum.cubase.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=57331 (! continue to the another thread (link in 8th post))
--> you may need to enable IMAGE_FILE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE set in executables image header (see instructions from Cubase.net forum link)
--> you need least 1-2 GB RAM to get most sample based instruments working
--> low amount of RAM like you have there, remember set the virtual memory large enough
--> VST/DX effects and typical VST/DX instruments won't consume much RAM (only sample based does)
    c) CPU usage can be controlled by latency settings ...
When you record using plug-ins w/ 'software' monitoring (the way you can hear the plug-ins too), you need to set latency low (~5 ms) to get rid of delay between keypress and heard audio. You have only some methods you can use in this case to get the CPU usage down --> if you have plenty of tracks (w/ plug-ins) playing in background then you may get the CPU usage high --> pops/crackling/dropouts --> freezing tracks is good method then or bouncing (converting) MIDI tracks w/ software instruments to audio tracks, etc. Normally single tracks aren't a problem... you can use 2-5 ms latency settings then w/o troubles.
When you are doing mixing, you can use much higher latency settings (20 - 100 ms).
    d) what do you mean by Workstation ... if just a prebuild DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) then aren't those normal PCs/MACs too? If you mean those hardware recording systems then, isn't that a bit expensive path for a E-MU 0404 owner?
ATM, problems comes from latest technology as like from SATA/RAID controllers, PCIe bus (graphics), FireWire Controllers, etc. (like in forums here, these have been mentioned many times along with X-Fi issues).

  • BPM Newbie

    Hi Guys
I am a BPEL guy and just started working on BPM. Being a newbie in BPM field i have few queries which should be able to make me understand the diff between BPEL and BPEM.
    1) We created Business Process in BPEL with WS Orchestration, Deployed on BPEL PM Server then invoked the BPEL process with java code. Is it same with BPM? Do we have separate BPM Engine / Server for BPM? Where it is deployed? How is it invoked?
    2) Can we call/invoke one BPM process from another BPM process?
    3) How to use business rules in BPM?
    4) How do we use BPM process in actuall overall project deployment?
    5) Can it call any ESB and BPEL process? or can we call a BPM process from ESB or BPEL?
    6) Does it also have instances like BPEL? and its versions?
I may have asked some stupid questions here but i am just trying to know how it can help me in understanding the business modelling better.
    Many Thanks

Do we have separate BPM Engine / Server for BPM? Where it is deployed? How is it invoked? There is the dedicate engine for BPM that can run on an application server like WLS, you just have to deploy your projects on the engine in order to have them available.
The processes can be started in may ways: using the workspace (web application that alllows users to interact with processes) running activities (applications) that start the processes, using webservices, using jms listenere and so on. I suggest you to look at the documentation for specific details.
    2) Can we call/invoke one BPM process from another BPM process? Of course!
    3) How to use business rules in BPM? Just prepare the rules and use them, for instance using business rule based transitions to control the flow of the process...
    4) How do we use BPM process in actuall overall project deployment? It depends on your project
    5) Can it call any ESB and BPEL process? or can we call a BPM process from ESB or BPEL?Sure with ESB, it's strongly integrated with it. I've no experience with BPEL integration but I know it can be done.
    6) Does it also have instances like BPEL? and its versions? It has. Don't know if in BPEL it's the same...
You define a process and then you can run instances of that process. You can modify it and have different versions running on the engine... but it would be too long to discuss here and now.
I may have asked some stupid questions here but i am just trying to know how it can help me in understanding the business modelling better. No question is stupid :)
    Hope that this helps.
