Newcastle Temp problems

Hi ppl.
I have now built my friend PC and not one problem so far...........TOUCH WOOD!
Umm I know this has been discussed before but as I was expecting I am having temp problems with the board.
He has a Newcastle 3200+ and I have only seen the idle temp and this is around 60C. What I want to know is this about the usual temp for this processor with the bad detection of temps. Btw the heatsink is cool so am guessing is seated correctly.
What is the usual Load temp with the wrong detection?
Also the system temp is very high in the high 30Cs to 40C even with the case open. So I presume the System temp is also detected wrong.
Is this correct?
Finally should I bother updating the BIOS to 1.2A (I think it is) because it appears to fix the temps for  short time then just go bad to the original readings? Is it worth just seeing what the actual temp is by upgrading?
Also is there any word when the next BIOS will be released? in July?
Cheers
SAspaz

LOL, welcome to the club.  I said "screw it" a long time ago
SASpaz: About the system temperature--to my understanding, the motherboard has a simple temperature sensor somewhere on it's surface that records the temperature of the surrounding air; basically, it reads the case temperature.  If this is true, I have reason to believe that "SYS temp" is also a false reporting:
I have an Antec P160W case  , which includes two temperature probes.  Right now, they're just dangling in the middle of the case, and they read ~28°C.  My SYS temp reading is usually ~42°C.  For some straaaaannnge reason, I trust the Antec probes over the MSI probe

Right then,if you have a NEWCASTLE core and a temp problem then post here.
    Rules for this thread:
a)Please only Post in this thread if you have a temp prob!,NO POSTS OF MINES FINE,OR YOUR CPU IS BORKED.
b)Please post the cpu stepping which can be found out with this program which is free HERE and what motherboard and bios revision either offical or beta.
c)Please post two temps, one without cool and quiet enabled in bios (disable it in bios under Frequency/Voltage Control) and again with it enabled and with your windows power schemes set to Minimal Power (make sure you have the AMD driver for cool&quiet to work properly).
d)Please post another set of temps when after stressing your system both with cool&quiet enabled and disabled.
e)Your max temp that you ever had say after running a game or prime95 ect,ect
    with COOL&QUIET still enabled.
f)What heatsink and fan your using.
    NOTE:
Please note the AMD driver isn't on the motherboard cd and you are required to goto AMd website and download the driver for your particular operating system here
so i will start this and hopefully others will follow, use format below:

Thank you for contacting MSI Technical Support.
The CPU temperature you mention is acceptable. The CPU temperature is different according to the CPU model and type and even produce data and manufactory. The temperature is acceptable if only the temperature is in the range of the CPU temperature. Please check the OPN code marked on the top of your CPU then figure out the highest temperature which your CPU can accept, refer to this link: http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_cpu_support_detail.php?UID=amdcpu . And please make sure again the CPU fan is installed properly and closely and assure the airiness for your case is fine.
Thanks for your supporting MSI product. We're sorry for any inconvenience caused. Please feel free to let us know if you still have any further issues or inquires.
    Best regards,
    MSI Technical Support
Now I can see how they might have been able to say that my temperatures are "acceptable" in the sense that they are not at or above the critical temperature of the CPU (70C), even though I think high temperatures are just as unacceptable, but there is no rational reason of which I can think that they would be able to say the same thing in response to the data mcmanic sent in, which contained a few measurements of CPU temp above 70C.  According to AMD, that should simply be impossible because the CPU will halt itself at 70C for its own protection.

  • Msi 8800gt zalman temp problem

    Hello
i got my new card yesterday but had a serious temp problem,
    My setup is as follows:
    msi kn9 diamond (mobo)
    ozc pc6400 2gig (mem)
    msi 8800gt zalman (GFX)
    5600+ amd (CPU)
    GFX mem temp: 65c
    GFX GPU temp: 73c
I took it down my brothers so i could try it in his, just in case i had an issue with my comp,
Had the same results as me but like me he said the fins on the cooler wernt hot enough to be that temp,
We took the zalman cooler of and you know the plastic protective film used to protect the heatsinkl surface,
IT WAS STILL ON, Yes the plastic film was still in place, with thermal paste all over it,
so obviously removed it, put more paste on and now its idle at 38c and load is 50c
    What more can i say!!!!!

YOU MAY HAVE CLOGGED THE ZALMAN 8800GT, HOW IS THE WATER FLOW? MINES GOT CLOGED, I OPENED MY ZALMAN 8800GTS AND THERE, PIECES OF SMALL LIKE GELLY TRAPPED INSIDE, YEP. YOU HAVE TO OPEN THE ZALMAN AND CHECK IT OUT...OR GET  A NICE PRESSUE AND BLOW IT ALL OFF. MINES NOW IDLE 45 AND PEAK TO 55 ON CRYSIS.

  • Suddenly have temp problems after 18 months w/out issues

Ok had my 651 for 18 months now and not single problem with temperature.
I moved house about 4 weeks ago and packed up my computer and drove for two hours to put it up in temporary accommodation (my folks). Came back two weeks later and made the return journey. No-one touched it over those two weeks.
Anyway, I set it up in my new place and things were going well, although I did notice that the fan was running a bit louder than usual when playing a movie (but figured that perhaps I hadn't noticed it in my old place).
So last night I had the computer on for about half an hour and it switched off. I went into the bios to check the temperature and lo and behold:
    System temperature 40C
    CPU temperature 80C
The threshold is 85C so I can only assume that the computer turned off as a result of the high temp.
The question is, why? Why, after all this time would I now get temp problems? Could moving the computer have dislodged something important? There is plenty of space around the box and the room is no hotter than the last one.
The only thing I have done lately is to fit a wireless PCI card, which is tiny, and isn't even fully installed yet! (not hooked up to broadband so haven't bothered installing the drivers). I don't think this is related, as I noticed the mega fan going mad even before I put this in.
Sorry for the long post, I hope you can help.

Well, did one last test last night - turned on the computer from cold and went straight into the BIOS - CPU temp started at 55C and within 40 seconds was up to 75C. So there was obvious something drastically wrong.
I opened up the box and sure enough, the heatsink was loose. All the moving must have dislodged the clip. The actual system to hold the heatsink on top doesn't really seem that secure to me - there is not really that much pressure on top of the cpu.
Anyway, I re-aliigned it and afterwards everthing was fine.
I might buy some of that Arctic Silver thermal paste, as the layer on top of the CPU doesn't really look sufficient.
    Thanks for your help guys.

  • Does the Neo4-F suffer the same temp problems as the Neo2 Platinums?

    Hey there,
I'm about to change my Neo2's below and in the process put these five Opteron 146's in "something'.
(The Asus board is a test bed. I really liked my old A7N8X Dx's and bought it cheap enough used)
Can someone here answer if the Neo4-F's suffer the temp reading problems as my Neo2 Platinums do?
Nothing like rebooting to "get' a lower temp. Or watch it rise 1-2deg a day in a stable ambient.
I'd really like to not end up with new BIOS's being released attempting to cure the "supposed" temps reported.
They run 24/7 for Grid.org's Cancer Research and misleading or incorrectly reported temps worry me at times.
    Thanks,
    Rick

    Hi......
Can´t speak for the Neo4-F MoBo, just some general comments, that may or may not help you.
What temp problems did you have with your Neo2 MoBo ?
Getting a 100% accurate cpu temp reading seems to be difficult task to achieve for many Vendors and softwaremakers.
Differant vendors may have differant ways to monitor the integreated cpu temp sensor, which does not necessarily mean that the actual cpu temp is differant between differant MoBo´s.
Meaning a low cpu temp report may not be true and vice versa, so knowing the true cpu temp is not that easy, but I believe that any system that runs stable 24/7 is happy, no matter what cpu temp that is reported ( within reasonable values)
There are usually some "safe cpu temp" biossettings that could be changed, if the reported cpu temp is too high, to avoid shut downs / boot problems.
    Some basic factors to consider are ;
    - ambient room temperature
    - what cpu cooler / thermal grease is used
    - case / system ventilation and airflow
    - what biosversion used
    - surrounding system componenets, like VGA, PSU etc.
    - stock or OC cpu-speed and cpu voltage
The above factors are the things you can affect yourself, no matter what MoBo.
    For the moment I´m running a K8N Neo2 / Winchester with some 28c idle and 45c load.
I´m getting an opteron 146 to the weekend and it will be interesting to see what cpu temp I will get.
It is my understanding that the opterons runs a bit hotter compared to winchester / Venice cores.

Hi. I'm new here and I've been googling this problem for a while and haven't found a specific solution for my problem so I was hoping someone here could help me. First off, I am not a computer tech or know-it-all. I put this system together with no previous experience and it has been running fine till I downloaded Everest and hwmonitor and found that the temperatures of MCP and TMPIN1 is 85-95 C.

    320 GB WD 7200 RPM HD & 1TB WD 7200 HD.
My computer didn't have any problems until yesterday when I left my computer on all day (was a really hot day) and I came home and turned on World of warcraft in windowed mode and tried to play a movie (I always play with a video running) and the video wouldn't display and crashed each time I tried. I could run either the game or the movie but not both. So I checked the temperature and it showed MCP at 95 C. I turned it off for a while, and it went back to normal.
I looked at many different posts and one suggested I try reapplying the thermal compound on my CPU chip which I did with Arctic silver 5 and it's helped my CPU temp a bit but not my MCP temp.
Then I read from other posts that MCP is a different chip but I have no idea where it is. Is it the square silver (one with "MSI" written on it) next to the 2nd PCI-E slot? http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1885
I would figure it would be that one since it's covered by the 2nd video card then it would make sense for the high temp.
If it is. would putting it down to the 3rd slot fix the problem? I'm not sure if the SLI cable would even reach from 1st to 3rd slot if I had to do that. And not sure if leaving the 2nd PCI-E slot open would be alright. I know I'm sounding like a noob; but I really am so please bare with these questions.
If that is not the MCP chip can any1 tell me where it is specifically on that board and how I should go about fixing the temp problem.
I have 2x120mm Rear exhaust fans, 240 top exhaust, 3x120 front exhaust fans, and even installed a 120mm Side panel intake fan which I figured would blow right on the MCP chip since people said it was in the southern area, but it has not helped.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

3 x 2GB sounds like a memory kit meant for an Intel system. In the old days non-optimal memory configurations made chipset temp. sky-rocket. But that shouldn't be it nowadays, should it.
At least try with a single stick.
Next comes air-flow. Like Henry says, 'in from the front and out the back or top'. If for example a big processor heatsink blocks the way, parts of the motherboard and the memory will be in a poor air-flow pocket. That is partly your problem I believe, possibly alongside an exhaust fan that is not up to the job.
The chipset has a separate heat sink. If you intend to reseat that heat-sink, you will have to take the motherboard out, and un-fasten it from the back-side. Use tiny pliers if your fingers are too weak.

  • If My retail fan+cpu fails due to Newcastle temps, who do i make claim with

    As title,interesting thought,
If MSI continue to ignore the problem with the 4AX revision of the Newcastle cores (like mine) that are constantly getting high temps thus the cpu fan is working to hard for long periods of times thus maybe failing earlier, who is to blame and who would replace, surely MSI would be to blame as its their software at fault

    Hi
I understand your concern, I sure it will be resolved soon, I saw Sab posting that the Nvidea section of the forum were saying a bios fix was either available or coming soon.  If any CPU fan failed within a year or so, I would be RMA ing it to supplier for a new one. If it causes CPU to go down, then that to would be suppliers problem.
    cheers

  • Flashed 1.81 bios to resolve new castle temp problems, board now does not post help.

I have a  K8T NEO-FIS2R mb with 3000+ athlon 64.  Proc ID utility tells me that is the newcastle CPU.
I read this post in the forums. https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?threadid=53435&sid=
It indicates a beta bios 1.81 that lowers the processor temp. for newcastle procs.  I have built my own computers for 10 years and am always interested in patching bios to fix issues.  I read the replies and didn't see anyone with any irriversible problems.  So I used the Windows flash utility in live update to apply 1.81.  After it applied and rebooted the board no longer posts (or at least it doesn't get as far as initializing the video).  I get power led and IDE led lit up.  They flash every 5 or 10 seconds which looks to me like the mb is in some sort of reset loop?  Anyway, I get no video, no beep codes.  I tried the ctrl-home trick, but it doesn't even get far enough to access floppy drive so I seem to not be able to recover from this mistake.  Anyone have any suggestions?  I even had this machine on a UPS so I know there were no power interuptions.  I guess I will avoid Live Update from now on and do it the old fashioned way.  Worst part is I was running on the system for 8 months and no stability problems, but I was just interested in running it at a lower temp to prolong the life of my CPU :-(
    Thanks for any help,
    JC

Already tried uplougging my sata HD from power as well as CDROM.  I don't think that its overloaded.  It's not really flashing so much as a very short flicker as if it is resetting every 5 or 10 seconds.  This is just a theory since it never gets to booting off the floppy or displaying video. I will try unplugged PS for a few minutes and see what happens.  I don't think that my PS coincidentally fried at the same time that I flashed my bios, but I suppose stranger things have happened.  Perhaps I'll try a different PS.  Thanks for your suggestions, keep them coming.

  • Strange temp problems [Images]

When i start the computer the temp is idle at 50°
But when i do a restart the temp goes down to 35~°

Yep, this is the stupid windows cold boot problem. Reboot is the only way to fix it Just gotta live with it unfortunatley, it affects all A64 boards AFAIK.
Oh and MODS, love the new board

i have just installed a msi kt6 delta lsr , but when i have ran the system a while the sys temp is around 40-42 c and the cpu temp is around 52c .
on my old mobo the temps never went above 35c for the cpu and 25c for the sys temp .

    512 ddr333
    geforce fx5800 ultra
windows me (but same in win xp pro)
2 fans blowing air into case and 2 sucking air out
does anybody know a way to improve the temps please

Yippee! A ME user, like me! You know I guess MS support for W98 and ME has been prolonged til 2006? It has partly to do with Linux.
The temperature for the CPU is a little high, but not alarmingly so. Barton gets a little bit hotter on these boards, and I think it is the placing belovw the PSU that is the cause. The system temperature for you is no problem.
To get the warmth away from the CPU I suggest a fan placed in the case door/side, that sucks it out.
Perhaps you have not got such a case door? Then I suggest a quiet 80 mm fan on the back of the case as high as possible, again sucking air out in order to make a nice air flow. Another suggestion is to tie away cabling to the sides of the case as much as possible, power cables, IDE cables etc.

  • MSI NX7600GT-T2D256EZ speed and temp problems?

Hi, I'd like to buy a MSI NX7600GT-T2D256EZ but after reading this comparison in Madshrimps i'm confused:
    http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=getarticle&number=12&artpage=1958&articID=460
At the time of this comparison, there was a problem with speed and temperature as you can read in the article. I'd like to know if this problem has been already solved, because i didn't found any new info following this article.
Could someone help me? I really like this card since there is no fan, but wouldn't like to find problems.
    Thanks a lot.

Well the Link works but the described issue would only happen if gpu is overheating (as Aaron said). This is automatic core slow down and happens with any GeForce FX/6/7/8 vga when reaching the critical temp. Of course a passive cooled vga reaches higher temps than a vga of the same kind with active cooling. So good airflow inside the case is crucial to keep the temps down. With just an ordinary airflow (two casefans) the 7600GT-EZ never reaches critical temp.
The article you linked to also describes that the NX7600GT-T2D256EZ wrongly reports too high temps. This issue is unknown, I build a system with this vga sometime ago and it never reported wrong temps.

  • KM4M-V Temp problem

    Hello all,
I have just setup two systems with the km4m-v and am having temperature problems with both similar to these.  Both are running 1700+ (one palomino and one tbred) and both have coolermaster hs/fans.  Both have fresh antec foumula 5 hs greese (don't have any artic silver).
In the one case, the cpu temp stays around 76 degrees C with the board temp at 19 degrees.  It is housed in the MSI barebones kit mini case with an Allied PSU.  It has an 80 mm fan on the front and a 90 mm on the back.  The breeze coming off the fan is cool and the hs is not terribly hot if you touch it while running.  In this case, it is running version 1.1 of the bios.  I know I need to update this, but I need to "reactivate" win XP before I can do that (I don't have the key; I'm doing it for a friend).
The other is in a kids case (looks like a car) with an antec 350 smart power PSU.  The board reports that the cpu is running 55 degrees C with the board reporting 25 degrees.  The case has an 80 mm fan in front, in back and on the side panel.  The HS is an older coolermaster (all alumnium with an 80 mm fan on it).  Again the breeze out the back is cool and the hs is not terrily hot to the touch as well.  Additionally, I have a temp probe on the hs (on the side close to the base) that reports the temp at 36 degrees C.  I'm not exactly sure about the bios version, but live update tells me that there is no need to update.
Can I trust these temps?  I know these CPUs run hot, especially the palomino, but these will be going inot environments that are not air conditioned and so, while it is cool now (I love fall), the summer will see much more heat and humidity.
    Thanks for any help!

As near as I can tell, yes.  when I removed each hs (thought maybe there was something wrong I could see), both dies (?) left outlines in grease.

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Temp problems...

I just got this board and plugged my FX-53 into it.  In an air conditioned room @ 60'F, a cold bootup and in the bios it says my Mobo temp is 30'C, CPU 40'C.  Within 30 seconds, the CPU temp shoots up to 55'C.  It then will then sporadically jump between 50'C and 62'C.
I managed to install XP and all my drivers and I downloaded the MSI monitoring program and it listed my CPU @ 74'C and my motherboard @ 9'C...
I'm a bit weary because I don't want to fry my $900 cpu.  Is anyone else having problems???
This is with an XP-120 heatsink installed w/AS5 (thin layer, not half the tube   )

I noticed that everyone here is complaining about the High Temperatures from the K8N Neo2 Platinum Series for the Socket 939.  I too am having difficulties with the temps.
In core center it shows a Temp. at 140°F which to me seems outrageously high.  Tech support from MSI told me to physically touch the heatsink and if it felt hot or warm I may have a problem.  It did not feel warm at all.  However, MSI claims to not be having issues with the Temp readout on the motherboard specified.  (See below).
    Dear unsaid,
The issue did not seen on this model. Please do physically touching the HSF on the processor to see if it’s warm on touch then you can know weather the readout is true or not, thanks.

I had the ASUS A8V Deluxe w/ wifi and switched do to some slow boot times and the fact that NVIDIA's chipset is usually better than VIA.
    Question is this :
What good quality heatsink and fan should I get for the socket 939 chipset.  I see people posting about the Zalman 7000 and Venus 12.  But, is there a really good one without necessarily having to take the board out of the case and removing the backplate?
I also see people claiming to have a bios of 1.2 or 1.3.  Where do you get these?  I can only find 1.1 and that is what I am running and there is no change in temps.
If anyone has a great recommendation on the heatsink and fan please email me at [email protected]
    Thanks,

  • K8N neo2 plat Temp problem

Was wondering if anybody else has came across this problem or not.  The Bios is reading cpu temp and sys temp at 44 and 43 C.  While Temp monitors in windows such as pc alert is reading the the temps at 126 C.  Bios Was just updated recently so its running 1.8.  Probaly wouldn't have noticed but the pc started locking up during game play.  So I started checking different areas and came across the temp difference.

    Quote from: syar2003 on 23-May-05, 23:44:28
PcAlert isn't compatible with K8N Neo seies .
It screws up the corecell chip data (so don't ever use it).
Use SpeedFan , Motherboard Monitor (MBM5) , MSI corecenter , for readout through windows.
I thought I might add that in my personal experience corecenter is inaccurate with +12v rail, everything else seems to read the same between the 3 mentioned programs though.
