Apparently nVidia has set some up.....link

Ah,
Nothing like Flinging Pings out over the Atlantic Ocean and hoping they make it to the other side!   :D

  • URGENT: Multiplayer Online Game

What would be the best way to make a multiplayer online game? I know how to create a game using an applet. Do I need to use a servlet? I know nothing about comunicating across the internet using java. Thanks.

no you dont need a servlet, nor an applet.. just write it. you choose servet vs. applet vs app when you ask 'how do i want them to get it?" then that helps you decide limitations of the game..
do you mind them dl'ing a client manually?
do you want it put into a web page for auto download?
do you want it to be a web page? (sorta dull dont ya think? click right to go right, click left arrow to go left.. reminds me of wumpus hunting!)
so, then you need to figure out how to communicate over a wire... advanced java networks is a good book for that.. gives a good smattering of rmi, corba, sockets, etc etc..
so once you realize sockets is the answer then go look at java.io, java.net and what not.. follow the tutorials.. ask some questions along the way and walla.. you have a simpel client/server.. after that, start writing your game.
    enjoy.

  • How to create a turn-based multiplayer online game?

Hello. This is my first time here. I am familiar with programming games and have been doing so for 20 years. However, I'm completely new to using Java to do so. In the past, I wrote games in BASIC, Blitz, and C++ using DirectX. Being familiar with C/C++, the Java language syntax is not a hurdle for me.
I've never created a networking game, but I feel that if I tried to create one using one of the programming languages I already know that I would succeed at doing so. (I'm just trying to show that I feel confident in programming with the languages that i know)
The dilemma here is that someone else would like me to program a turn'based multiplayer game for them in Java.
I've downloaded the NetBeans 4.1 IDE and uncovered a lot of terms and such that I'm unfamiliar with.
What I'm looking for from you guys is an overview of what I need to do to achieve my ultimate goal of creating this online game.
As a reference, I need to create a game very similar to this one:
    http://www.tacticsarena.com/play/
Click on the "Launch Game: Tactics Arena Online" link to see the game.
Create a new account to play (accounts are free).
Upon starting the NetBeans IDE, I found that I could create several different types of projects. I guess first of all, I need to know what kind of project is best suited to make this type of game.
To name a few, I have to select from:
    Java Application
Java Class Library (is this an Applet?)
    Web Application
    Enterprise Application
    EJB Module
Then I guess I would like to know if any of the above projects would be used to make the clients interface or the server side software or both? Or do I need to use some other kind of software/programming language/etc. to create the server side? (As a side note, typically what kind of Operating system would the server be using? I ask because I may set one up myself for testing purposes.)
Somewhere I came upon the term 'Servlet'. Is this some kind of Java server application? Do I need/want to be using this?
As you can see, I'm very lost at where to begin. I'm not at all unfamiliar with programming. I'm just unfamiliar with Java.
    WolRon

    Hi WolRon
I am in the process of learning Java myself and from what i have read, you have a long road ahead of you!
To start this Project the following will be essential for you to know:
Applets - if this is going to an online game
Multiple Threads - for the Server side
Swing - for the GUI on both sides
AWT - help work with the user input (mouseListeners, buttonListeners, etc)
    And knowledge of a database.
those are the most obvious things that you will need to understand.
I strongly suggest buying a Java book from which you need to start at the beginning. Although the concept of OOP is the same through most languages Java has terms - as do all languages- that will be different from the other languages. Starting at the beginning will be beneficial to your Java coding future.
    Good luck.

  • Lags in Multiplayer/Online Games (4S)

    Hallo,
I have been using the new iPhone 4S for a couple of days now. Everything is good except for some decent lagging in online games.
I have two games which are graphics-intensive.
    These are:
    - MetalStorm
    - Asphalt 6: Adrenaline
both games work perfectly in Offline/Single player mode.
Once I choose to play online the lags start. They range from once in 2 seconds to once in 20 seconds on average. The lag time is around 0.2 of a second. Pretty small lag, but takes a lot (if not everything) from good gaming experience and irritates a lot.
This is not a problem with my internet. I have played with friends on WiFi Locally in the multiplayer mode. This is also not a problem with my router because my friends have the iPhone 4 and I also have an iPod touch. The problem occurs ONLY on the iPhone 4S (which is funny since it is supposed to be the fastest iOS Device).
I have read somewhere that airplane mode could help, but it does not change anything.
Does anyone have such a problem? Any suggestions?

  • Multiplayer online Game

What I need to use to develop amultiplayer online game ..say a TicTacToe Game, 2 player can start one instance, another two play can start anathor game and so on..
Is it possible with J2SE, or I need to use J2EE?

    jwenting wrote:
Not even a servlet container. Could be a standalone tcp server running next to a regular webserver like Apache.
The webserver serves the applet and static html it's displayed in, applet connects to the standalone server using a custom protocol (it does need to run on the same host to be accessible of course).Yep, even that. Although I'd posit that using a servlet container would probably be simpler, and alleviate some of the more bothersome low-level networking hassle. But yep, it's worth considering.

  • Is there some multiplayer online games... but for three or more players?

Hi, somebody knows a multiplayer game but for more than 2 gamers?
    Thanks

Many panels can do this.  Specifically, I think tint2 would be the easiest to configure for something like the Win3.1 style of iconifying.  Just set the tint2rc to only show iconified items, have all transparent backgrounds, and to show only icons and no text.
EDIT: I guess this depends on whether you'd want to be able to drag the icons around.  Tint2 would not allow this.  They'd just show when the window was iconified, and could be clicked on to show the window again.  As another option, Rox desktop manager does something like this if I'm remembering right (it's been a while).

  • Multiplayer online TicTacToe Game

I am familiar with Java, worked for almost 2 years, I would like to know what exactly I need, the programms on client side and the server side, how to code and all to develop a multiplayer online game, where user will ener the room using their nickName and see some tables and the users they can join any table or ceate new table or invite a user, how to doit? is it possible to do it using J2SE?
I have developed a networking game of tickTactoe using sockets, is that of any help?

It is deftaly posible to have java online games and the api for it comes with java. You deftaly should not have php involded in the mix unless there is somthing very hacky going on.
As for MySQL, hosting and hardware that all depends on what you are making and how you implement it.
Some info on networking in java: [http://tinyurl.com/yjt7mkf|http://tinyurl.com/yjt7mkf]
You deftaly want to look in to the sockets part.
If you're interested in java MMOs or any kind of online games for that matter, i would also recommend taking a look at [Project Darkstar|http://tinyurl.com/ylnlre6] . It provides all the infrastructure you need to implement networked games. You just have to implement the code. don't forget to read their faqs.

  • What prog language/tools for a browser based online game ?

I am going to start a project for an multiplayer online game community soon, and need some advice.
The community will consist of the game itself, forum, wiki and irc-chat and use f/oss software to keep the running costs as low as possible.
The game is the heart of the community and will be a turn-based wargame with roleplaying and strategy options, mainly text based with some graphics and animations  and played through a browser. (These kind of games are often referred to as Multiplayer Online RolePlaying game MORPG )
The SQL player database will have up to approx 100k player records, each of which will have many fields.
The game code will run 24/7 on a linux server (distro not chosen yet) and needs to fulfill these requirements :
    easily maintanable by multiple programmers
programmers should be able to develop/test parts of the code on their own pc's using linux or windows.
good, fast access to the player DB
combat calculations will be mathemically complicated, and need to be fast
User interaction will be through a web-page
A way to keep users from accessing the game code directly to avoid computer players. (it's possible this has more to do with the code structure than with the language)
Most games of this type seem to use a php/ C combination, but that appears to have several drawbacks.
Specifically code maintainability and distinguishing between humans and bots/computer players are a problem for these games.
What environment do you think would fulfill these requirements ?
P.S. if this is to theoretical, check out these links to see some similar games :

i think java could be a good choice for the programminglanguage. Most computer have the JVM installed already...

  • Drop from game servers a lot with HomeHub 2.0

Im using HomeHub 2.0 on Win7 and I get a lot of disconnects from online game servers even though the connection is stable. I never had this problem with my old BT modem on the same games. I came to the conclusion that it has to be something to do with HomeHub 2.0...
    Any Ideas?

Mines been doing that the last couple of days.
My connection doesn't lose sync but I lose connection to the internet.
Strangely when it happens it's usually on the hour.
It happened just before 11 last night then just before midnight. This morning it happened just before 8.
My router logs says PPP link down.

online games cannot connect to its respective game servers when there are 5 computers from the Network playin online games already. the remaining 10 units will faile to connect to game server, any online games installed in all computers. Which means the only first 5 computers to play online games can connect successfully the rest will fail.
i did not install any third party software, i use only windows xp default firewall, all games are exempted to it. anti virus Avg 9 free edition which has no firewall.
i reseted to factory default my router already.
internet browsing is working smoothly, in all 15 computers eventhough there are online games running , videos from youtube are fast to load i dont have problem with my DSL speed.
I talked to Linksys live chat many times already, they said they will forwarded my case to a HQ and wait for thier call, afortunately i recieve none, no e-mails or calls from them.
please someone help me fix my network. what must i do in order to make all computers in my network can connect to its game servers not just 5 of them.

  • [HELP] Online Multiplayer Quiz Game!

Hi, I am wondering if it is possible to make online multiplayer quiz game.
With that I mean over the LAN network.
Like it use the bluetooth and you connect to it.
Like the quiz is to answer 0-20 on german and when you click check it will send the answer to the other phone. Like if my mom have it and says whats wrong and right you know. It would be neat if you did help me!
    Thanks, Sander over here!
In ActionScript 3 to Air for IOS.

multiplayer games are for advanced programmers.
the easiest way to start multiplayer gaming with flash is it use adobe's rtmfp peer-to-peer connections.  here's an excerpt from a book (Flash Game Development: In a Social, Mobile and 3D World) i wrote:
    Multiplayer Games
With multiplayer games data needs to be communicated among the players.  When a player makes a move (changing the game state) the updated game state needs to be communicated to all the other players. In addition, that communication needs to occur in a timely manner.
With turn based games (like card games) that communication among players can take as long as few seconds without degrading the game experience. With real time games (like shooter games), even a 250 millisecond delay in communicating game state leads to a significantly degraded player experience. Consequently, real time multiplayer games require substantial expertise to successfully develop and deploy.
There are two fundamentally different ways that communication among players can be accomplished. Players can communicate via a server (server based games) or they can communicate directly from player to player (peer-to-peer) games.
    Server Based Multiplayer Games
Generally, the code in each player’s Flash game handles the player’s input, transmits player data to the server, receives other players' data and displays the game state. The server receives player data, validates the data, updates and maintains game state and transmits each player’s data to the other players.
The code used on the server cannot be ActionScript so you will need to learn a server-side coding language like php or c#.  Server-side coding is beyond the scope of this book so I will not cover server based multiplayer games except to say you need to have advanced coding skills in, at least, two languages (ActionScript and a server-side language) to create these game types.
    Peer-to-peer games
Since Flash player 10, you can create multiplayer games without the need of an intermediary server to facilitate player communication.  The Flash player can use a protocol (Adobe's Real-Time Media Flow Protocol) that allows direct peer-to-peer communication.
Instead of using server-side code to handle the game logic and coordinate game state among players, each peer in the network handles their own game logic and game state and communicates that directly to their peers and each peer updates their game state based on the data received from others.
To use peer-to-peer networking each peer must connect with an Adobe server.  Peer-to-peer communication does not go through that server (or it that would not be peer-to-peer) but peers must stay connected with the Adobe server in order to communicate with each other.
To communicate with the Adobe server you should use your own server URL and developer key. That URL and key can be obtained at http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/entitlement/index.cfm?e=cirrus.

  • Favourite online game/games?

Since I'm still not sold on PS4/Xbox One in terms of games and no longer have my gaming rig. I still play my PS3 for online gaming. I recently went through my library of games.
I got back into the following games. And my online experience with Infinity 1. I get approx 38 down, 8up, 16-18 ping average -
Red dead redemption multiplayer - Insanely fun open world game - Especially the undead nightmare horde mode. And co-op. Lag free, little to no problems at all. Fast and responsive, played about 2 hours.
Uncharted 2 and 3 multiplayer - Uncharted 2 is still a very balanced and flowing online experience. It does have a low player count nowadays but still fun when you find a game. Co-op arena and adventure is as addictive as I remember it being. Despite the low player count. I played about 3 hours.
Uncharted 3 is rather unbalanced with the boosters, kickbacks. But the customisation of load outs, characters and the like is nice and it's quite faced paced. The more story integrated co-op missions are really fun too. I think the matchmaking is a bit bad in this though. As it tends to match me up more often than not with global players in competitive TDM, FFA resulting in lag compensation. Sometimes I'm on the good side of it but mostly not. *Infinity too good to be on the good side all the time eh? Lol.
Played about 2 and half hours - 3.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare multiplayer - My goodness it runs like smooth silk. Amazingly fast paced flowing TDM battles, FFA is a pure doddle and feels so balanced I haven't played this in 5 years. Came back and got a 30-1 FFA game first match. TDM going 47-4 first match. The game feels so good in comparison to "newer" cod games. I was picked as host through my 3 hour session. Amazing!
Destiny multiplayer (Online only duh!) - Surprisingly a decent shooter from Activision as they tend to rely too much on Call of Duty and now back with guitar hero...again. But Destiny does feel pretty unique in a way, a bit repetitive on story mode but certainly fun with friends and randoms who join your fireteam. It shines in crucible. Its really fun, if a little unbalanced to a degree. As some players with DLC weapons have a bit advantage. And that's the downside the DLC...blimey! Half the game's dlc is/was already a part of the game originally and they decided to cut the game in half and sell a £35 season pass good one!
Crucible on PS3 is a weird one. I can be running a full green bar on this and have some real laggy moments. I think this is the game's poor netcode/matchmaking as it matches me up with more global players like uncharted 3.
    Played for 2 hours.
Resident Evil 5 Co-op (Story, Versus DLC)
The story is the typical resident evil story I guess. It is the third person shooter, action game with nasty enemies and monsters trying to kill you. Playing this on co-op is fantastic. I had people joining me randomly from different countries with little to no lag. And no issue at all occurred. I joined others that were from Japan, USA and even Brazil and I experienced a smooth gameplay session without lag and it was fun. Despite the fact I am kind of poo at playing the game. Haha.
    I played about 3-4 hours.
The versus DLC was a bit hit and miss then again this DLC has always had some form of bad hosting, netcode issues. From the 8-10 games I played when not host it was pretty lag free. With only one host who was bad. Everyone was teleporting around lmao. When I hosted it ran smoothly. I played 5 or so games. Really fun if a little random with hosts. Good stuff though.
    Played about an hour.
These are the games I've been playing frequently over the past 2 weeks - And would be interested in what other posters/mods play. It doesn't matter what console you play. I'm just curious.
Also all these games are p2p but funnily enough had very little bad experience with them. Usually it can be bad. Maybe I've been lucky.
Also if anyone is interested. I set up my ps3 with a static IP and DMZ set up via cat7 cable and a HH5A with an ECI modem. Yes the cat7 is overkill but it was cheap. Lol.
Hopefully some folk will find this thread interesting as I find gaming on infinity fantastic personally.
    Mark.
*This is my signature...it's a bit boring*

    Hey Carl!
At least you attempt and that's all that matters with gaming especially online as I find many folk do take it a bit too seriously because they're "owning noobs" lol.
I think GTA V on PC will be worth the price once it goes down a bit. I'm planning on a gaming rig that can take advantage of 4K and all the bells and whistles once I've got everything I need. I love building PCs lol.
Funnily enough I never tried an MMORPG I do understand the basic fundamentals of it with fetch quests and the like I don't know if it'd be my thing. I know there is PvP arenas and might go into it for that and the character classes. I'm not sure though. WoW never caught my attention even in its infancy.
BioShock is an amazingly crafted FPS. I love the sombre, neglected and feel of history behind the game you could feel it which was so great. On the case about BioShock the sequel was not really needed it lacked so much "BioShock 2"and the poorly implemented multiplayer. Its not worthy of it being classed in the same universe its a fine example of a "cash cow" installment in the trilogy.
I did like BioShock Infinite it felt different and an evolution in the series. It did lack something. Perhaps the robotic residents of the world or slightly confusing plot but it was head and shoulders above BioShock 2. I liked the time period and the showcase of racism at the time.
I'm not saying I'm racist though just the developers tackling strong subjects and presenting them in a way where it catches your attention. They had some interesting ways to showcase the struggle on those times and the vastly split groups of people on that era in the early 20th century.
Yes I agree a lot of online worlds do lack the more dynamic elements. Even the simple kill enemies and they're gone for good would add something to the world they're presenting us.
    Thanks Carl!
    Hey Neil!
Good to see your interest on my post. I haven't personally played FIFA so I cannot comment that myself but seeing my friends play it it does seem to have an immersive football experience. I think I don't have an interest as I don't watch football lol yeah that could be it.
Destiny certainly had a lot to live up to and fell quite short of what they showed us at E3 and some gamimg expos. With a 500 million dollar budget you'd think it'd have more variety right? Lol.
I certainly balme Activision to a degree. Yes they published it but they have a hand in it. Look at call of duty haha.
And speaking of which. I also attempted to play advanced warfare after the campaign. The campaign was quite fun - Maybe for Spacey or the fact Troy Baker is in everything lol. I really thought it was fun with all the exo abilities. But multiplayer felt detached for some odd reason to me. It didn't feel smooth to me nor did the exo abilities feel good. I was playing "classic" a lot more when it was available and that didn't wet the Call of Duty 4 appetite.
Many folk do say "We need to let go of call of duty 4 and move on..." That statement is awful. Call of Duty 4 to this day runs, plays and all around feels better than any other in the series. The maps were better, the guns were balanced, the perks were balanced well except juggernaut but that's nothing to everything the perceeded call of duty 4. Shame people accept mediocrity.
Sorry for ranting a bit there haha.
Good to see another mod who is gamer @RobbieMac
I have had an interest in The Witcher 3 myself. Even though I'm a "last gen" player currently lol. I had played the previous 2 games which were amazing worlds it was quite an experience I have to admit.
I totally forgot about Skyrim Elder of Scrolls Online. It'll be an interesting one for PS4 in terms of connectivity and how it runs as I know on PC it had some issues I think in the first month. Unless I'm wrong maybe I'm thinking of something else. I feel unconfident with that statement. Correct me if I'm wrong lol.
I think the only game that will sell the PS4 to me is uncharted 4 but it looks so drab and depressing compared to the previous 3 games lol it has a "The last of us" feel to it. Hmmmm very unsure.
Lovely to talk to fellow gamers on here.
    Mark.

  • The making of an online game

Hello all users of the sun forums.
I've always been facinated of games and have been wrestling with the idea about learning enough to be able to make a simple online game.
I got several questions, mainly to see if this is something realistic or if it's not doable as a lone wolf.
Would java be the right programming language for a online game? (As it can be run on many different platforms, its a good candidate).
    - Any other languages that should be learned in addition to java?
    - Specific books that would benefit for the making of a online game?
What database technology should I learn about that would be the most beneficial for a online game? (be it a small or a large game)
I know very little about servers and networking, so some points about things to read up on would be nice.
And something i've always wondered about - How powerful server do you need for a 100 player thirdperson strategy game?
I know this might take me some years to learn, but its fun to have something to fill my sparetime with.
And sorry for my bad english!

Are there any database standards except SQL?Probably, but SQL is the one you'd be using.
I've been looking through several job applications, but it's hard to put together a list of programming languages that would go along with Java. HTML, XHTML, PHP, CSS, JavaScript, .NET, C#, C++ etc..Well, HTML and CSS and such aren't really programming languages... I'd recommend that you concentrate on Java and then include other things as you go along (and realize that something might be useful to know).
My way of attacking this would be to make a roadmap of what I'm going to learn and attack it step by step, but it's hard when I don't know what I should include. Please recommend books as I find it easier to read, than tutorials on the net.I'm sure your way sounds very good, but it's impossible to do it like that. You can't decide in advance all the things that you want and are going to learn and then just go on and do it. Learning is a continuous process. I have about 10 years of Java behind me and some dabbling in other programming languages, but I still keep learning things. And I bet most of the people here with 20+ years in the industry (look at the people with tens of thousands of posts) will say the same thing.
I haven't read it myself, but Joshua Bloch's Effective Java has been recommended in several places. I hope you enjoy reading, because that's really the best way to learn and then keep up with the programming scene.

  • Cant play online games anymore

    Hi,
Ever since I installed the new update for OSX, I cant play online games. Warcraft says "unable to connect to battle net". Medal of honor just crashes when I click "browse servers". Quake 3 says "no response from master server". Was working fine just a few days ago and the only change I can think that I made to my system was installing the OSX update. Could that be the problem? anyone else having this problem, or know how to fix it?

    Have you tried this yet?
    1. Click on the Go menu in the menu bar and select the Home menu item.
    2. Open the Library folder.
    3. Open the Preferences folder.
    4. Look for and delete the Preferences file and the Battle.net file if it is there.
What ports do you have open in the Firewall and Router?
In order to connect to Battle.net and allow others to connect to you the following ports need to be opened:
Diablo: TCP and UDP Port 6112
StarCraft/Brood War: TCP and UDP Port 6112
Warcraft II: Battle.net Edition: TCP and UDP Port 6112
Diablo II/Lord of Destruction: TCP Port 6112 and Port 4000.
Warcraft III: TCP Ports 6112 to 6119, unless you have changed the default in the Options/Gameplay screen for port forwarding.
Some firewall programs have preset ports available in their configurations that are often necessary to be open. One in particular is a connection to your DNS server. This usually takes place on UDP port 53.

  • Can't Connect to online games / other players Wii U

I can browse the internet and see other people online on my wii u via wifi but i cant connect to online games of mario kart 8 and people cant connect to my games of mario kart 8. There is a lot going around about how poor telstra is for supporting this but I want to play mario kart 8 online, if I can't do that on telstra then I will take my business elsewhere.

    Leigh-M,
BigPond does not provide support for 3rd party devices such as the WiiU. If you are experiencing difficulties your first point of contact would be Nintendo.
Can you confirm what troubleshooting steps you have done?
Have you made sure you have the latest firmware updates?
Confirmed that there are no ports that need to be opened to do this?
Have you tried manually configuring the DNS servers to those of other states or using Googles public DNS?
    Have parental controls been disabled?
Are you able perform a traceroute to the server?
