NFS shares fail to reconnect after server is rebooted

Hi everyone,
I currently have a File Sharing/Media Box/Torrent/Newgroup box in my basement/theater room. It is basically running as my server for the house. Consequently I have a bunch of NFS shares on it. Previously I was running Ubuntu on a similar box and didn't have this issue. What is happening is that if I reboot the server for whatever reason, the clients do not reconnect to the shares once the server box has rebooted. When I was running Ubuntu, after reboot the shares would just automagically be reconnected.
Both boxes are running Arch Linux if it matters.
Here is the /etc/exports file on the server:
# /etc/exports: the access control list for filesystems which may be exported
# to NFS clients. See exports(5).
/media/video/dlvideo/ 192.168.X.X/24(rw,async,no_subtree_check,no_root_squash)
/media/video/DVD/ 192.168.X.X/24(rw,async,no_subtree_check,no_root_squash)
/media/video/HDVID/ 192.168.X.X/24(rw,async,no_subtree_check,no_root_squash)
/media/stuff/AudioBooks/ 192.168.X.X/24(rw,async,no_subtree_check,no_root_squash)
/media/stuff/Downloads/ 192.168.X.X/24(rw,async,no_subtree_check,no_root_squash)
/media/stuff/Music/ 192.168.X.X/24(rw,async,no_subtree_check,no_root_squash)
/media/mythtv/ 192.168.X.X/24(rw,async,no_subtree_check,no_root_squash)
And here is how I mount them on the client:
192.168.X.X:/media/video/dlvideo /media/video/dlvideo nfs rsize=8192,wsize=8192,timeo=14,intr 0 0
192.168.X.X:/media/video/DVD /media/video/DVD nfs rsize=8192,wsize=8192,timeo=14,intr 0 0
192.168.X.X:/media/video/HDVID /media/video/HDVID nfs rsize=8192,wsize=8192,timeo=14,intr 0 0
192.168.X.X:/media/stuff/Downloads /media/stuff/downloads nfs rsize=8192,wsize=8192,timeo=14,intr 0 0
192.168.X.X:/media/stuff/Music /media/stuff/music nfs rsize=8192,wsize=8192,timeo=14,intr 0 0
192.168.X.X:/media/stuff/AudioBooks /media/stuff/audiobooks nfs rsize=8192,wsize=8192,timeo=14,intr 0 0
192.168.X.X:/media/mythtv /media/mythtv nfs rsize=8192,wsize=8192,timeo=14,intr 0 0
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Kevin

Hi there,
Have you tried running the SBS specific wizards on your system, namely the Fix my Network wizard and the import trusted certificate tool?
FMNW: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc546095.aspx
Import Trusted Certificate:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc546059.aspx
I'd start with FMNW, and then try a reboot to test if you're still having issues. If yes, then I'd try importing your certificate with the SBS tool, test again.
After that, you might look at the SBS Best Practices Analyzer results for your server to see if it picks up on a misconfiguration or condition that might be behind this issue.

Hope that helps,

    Thanks, any help is appreciated.

not sure what you mean by 'client' but if you have a Socket that has had any kind of IOException or SocketException you need to close it and create a new one.

I migrated a Windows 2003 32 bit with Zenworks 11.2.4 to Windows 2008 R2 SP1 64 bit with Zenworks 11.2.4 in same zone. I would like to move to zenworks 11.3 but the documents show I need my Primary server to be 64 bit.

  • 3G on iPad (1st gen) fails to reconnect after signal drop

I mostly use my iPad travelling on the train to and from work. The train travels through several tunnels and other areas best described as 3G signal blackspots. When emerging from a blackspot, I'm seeing the following problems:
    * iPad reports 3G signal in top-left corner of the screen, but apps report no internet connection, or
    * iPad reports no signal at all even though 3G coverage does exist
Switching the iPad into Airplane mode and back again restores the 3G connection, but not reliably. It can sometimes take several repeated switches to and from airplane mode to restore the connection.
This problem did not exist before upgrading to iOS 4.3.

No promises but a system Reset cures many ills and takes but a minute to perform:
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.
A Reset does NOT delete apps, photos, movies, music or any other data. A Reset does NOT delete any settings for email, network access, etc.
Also, you might wish to download the 4.2 User Guide. Pay special attention to page 170.

  • Server 2012 NFS - 10 minutes to resume after failover?

I've got a Server 2012 Core cluster running an HA file server role with the new NFS service. The role has two associated clustered disks. When I fail the role between nodes, it takes 10-12 minutes for the NFS service to come back online - it'll sit in 'Online
Pending' for several minutes, then transition to 'Failed', then finally come 'Online'. I've looked at the NFS event logs from the time period of failover and they look slightly odd. For example, in a failover at 18:41, I see this in the Admin log:

From this, I'm not sure what's going on between 18:41:59 and 18:44:06, between 18:44:06 and 18:50:47 or between 18:50:48 and 18:51:47. What's the NFS volume discovery doing and why does it take so long?
Does anyone have any thoughts as to where I could start looking to work out what's happening here? Is there any tracing that can be enabled for the NFS services to indicate what's going on?
    Thanks in advance!

I was able to get some downtime this afternoon so I tried
deleting the NFS share in question and recreating it
deleting all the NFS shares on the clustered file server (thus removing the NFS Server resource) and recreating them
deleting all the NFS shares and the ._nfs folder from all the associated drives and recreating them
deleting the clustered file server altogether, shutting down the cluster, starting it back up and recreating the file server.
None of these made any difference - this particular NFS resource still took about 10 minutes to return to service. I'm therefore supposing it's some aspect of the disk or the data on it that NFS is taking a long time to enumerate, but it's annoying that
I don't have any visibility into what's going on. I might try asking this same question in the MS partner forums to see if I get any answers there...

    Hello,
I am trying to measure performance of NFS share coming from Windows Storage Server 2012 using IOMeter also running on windows Server 2012. I can create the share on WSS2012. Windows 2012 client does see the share. IOmeter does see the share, and I can start

I have used IOMeter to SMB shares a lot with no problem..

    1) Can you use NFS share with NFS clients normally? I mean is it I/O Meter who has issues with streaming or do other apps have similar problems? Say normal copy to / from NFS share?
    2) What error exactly is popped up? Do you happen to have a screenshot?

The OVM server? Yes OVM Server :)
I've not seen this before. It could be that the hardware doesn't support the poweroff signal from the OS. Although I'm not sure if it is that much of an issue, as you rarely turn off / on the OVM servers themselves. You can easily power it off if it does a reset not a poweroff. The reboots after "init 0" disappeared once after I added a third NIC to my box, and dedicated it for virtual machines
ie, my Windows 7 box, on which I setup the entire VM infrastructure using VirtualBox has 3 NICs. Two for the VM Server, and the third one for the VM Manager.
The second NIC with VM Server configured to handle the traffic from Virtual Machines, isolating the 1st NIC for all other VM Server traffic. No more rebooting with VM Server and always shuts down with a "init 0"
Hope this info is useful for few others out there

Adding something I missed with last post
Following sequence is always used to shutdown the VM Server as my setup has NFS shares setup from VM Manager server itself
    1. Shutdown VM Server first (Stops all heartbeats etc gracefully)
    2. Stop OVMM service on VM Manager server
    3. Shutdown VM Manager Server

Did you do a clean, from scratch install? Or did you use the Migration Assistant to transfe from another Mac?
I had the same bloody issues and after doing a from scratch install I got everything working flawlessly.
The Migration Assistant messed up my KeyChains and seemed to play havoc on my Airport password and various other things.
Someone mentioned, on another post they deleted their keyChains and recreated their passwords. Still a clean install, I think, is the best route.
Do yoiu have to log in again when the connection is lost? I don't it finds it right away and logs in on it's own.
My Airport does not broadcast the SSID and a password is required to access the network.
I hope I have helped you out ...

  • New files and folders on a Linux client mounting a Windows 2012 Server for NFS share do not inherit Owner and Group when SetGID bit set

    Problem statement
When I mount a Windows NFS service file share using UUUA and set the Owner and Group, and set the SetGID bit on the parent folder in a hierarchy. New Files and folders inside and underneath the parent folder do not inherit the Owner and Group permissions
    of the parent.
I am given to understand from this Microsoft KnowledgeBase article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951716/en-gb) the problem is due to the Windows implmentation of NFS Services not supporting the Solaris SystemV or BSD grpid "Semantics"
However the article says the same functionality can acheived by using ACE Inheritance in conjunction with changing the Registry setting for "KeepInheritance" to enable Inheritance propagation of the Permissions by the Windows NFS Services.
    1. The Precise location of the "KeepInheritance" DWORD key appears to have "moved" in  Windows Server 2012 from a Services path to a Software path, is this documented somewhere? And after enabling it, (or creating it in the previous
location) the feature seems non-functional. Is there a method to file a Bug with Microsoft for this Feature?
    2. All of the references on demonstrating how to set an ACE to achieve the same result "currently" either lead to broken links on Microsoft technical websites, or are not explicit they are vague or circumreferential. There are no plain Examples.
    Can an Example be provided?
    3. Is UUUA compatible with the method of setting ACE to acheive this result, or must the Linux client mount be "Mapped" using an Authentication source. And could that be with the new Flat File passwd and group files in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
and is there an Example available.
    Scenario:
    Windows Server 2012 Standard
    File Server (Role)
+- Server for NFS (Role) << -- installed
    General --
    Folder path: F:\Shares\raid-6-array
    Remote path: fs4:/raid-6-array
    Protocol: NFS
    Authentication --
    No server authentication
    +- No server authentication (AUTH_SYS)
    ++- Enable unmapped user access
+++- Allow unmapped user access by UID/GID
    Share Permissions --
    Name: linux_nfs_client.host.edu
    Permissions: Read/Write
    Root Access: Allowed
    Encoding: ANSI
    NTFS Permissions --

    Applies to: This folder only
    -- John Willis, Facebook: John-Willis, Skype: john.willis7416

I'm making some "major" progress on this problem.
    1. Apparently the "semantics" issue to honor SGID or grpid in NFS on the server side or the client side has been debated for some time. It also existed as of 2009 between Solaris nfs server and Linux nfs clients. The Linux community defaulted to declaring
it a "Server" side issue to avoid "Race" conditions between simultaneous access users and the local file system daemons. The client would have to "check" for the SGID and reformulate its CREATE request to specify the Secondary group it would have to "notice"
by which time it could have changed on the server. SUN declined to fix it.. even though there were reports it did not behave the same between nfs3 vs nfs4 daemons.. which might be because nfs4 servers have local ACL or ACE entries to process.. and a new local/nfs
"inheritance" scheme to worry about honoring.. that could place it in conflict with remote access.. and push the responsibility "outwards" to the nfs client.. introducing a race condition, necessitating "locking" semantics.
This article covers that discovery and no resolution - http://thr3ads.net/zfs-discuss/2009/10/569334-CR6894234-improved-sgid-directory-compatibility-with-non-Solaris-NFS-clients
    2. A much Older Microsoft Knowledge Based article had explicit examples of using Windows ACEs and Inheritance to "mitigate" the issue.. basically the nfs client "cannot" update an ACE to make it "Inheritable" [-but-] a Windows side Admin or Windows User
[-can-] update or promote an existing ACE to "Inheritable"
Here are the pertinent statements -
"In Windows Services for UNIX 2.3, you can use the KeepInheritance registry value to set inheritable ACEs and to make sure that these ACEs apply to newly created files and folders on NFS shares."
"Note About the Permissions That Are Set by NFS Clients
The KeepInheritance option only applies ACEs that have inheritance enabled. Any permissions that are set by an NFS client will
only apply to that file or folder, so the resulting ACEs created by an NFS client will
    not have inheritance set."
    "So
If you want a folder's permissions to be inherited to new subfolders and files, you must set its permissions from the Windows NFS server because the permissions that are set by NFS clients only apply to the folder itself."
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;321049
    3. I have set up a Windows 2008r2 NFS server and mounted it with a Redhat Enteprise Linux 5 release 10 x86_64 server [Oct 31, 2013] and so far this does appear to be the case.
    4. In order to mount and then switch user to a non-root user to create subdirectories and files, I had to mount the NFS share (after enabling Anonymous AUTH_SYS mapping) this is not a good thing, but it was because I have been using UUUA - Unmapped Unix
User Access Mapping, which makes no attempt to "map" a Unix UID/GID set by the NFS client to a Windows User account.
To verify the Inheritance of additional ACEs on new subdirectories and files created by a non-root Unix user, on the Windows NFS server I used the right click properties, security tab context menu, then Advanced to list all the ACEs and looked at the far
Column reflecting if it applied to [This folder only, or This folder and Subdirectories, or This folder and subdirectories and files]
    5. All new Subdirectories and files createdby the non-root user had a [Non-Inheritance] ACE created for them.
    6. I turned a [Non-Inheritance] ACE into an [Inheritance] ACE by selecting it then clicking [Edit] and using the Drop down to select [This folder, subdirs and files] then I went back to the NFS client and created more subdirs and files. Then back to the
Windows NFS server and checked the new subdirs and folders and they did Inherit the Windows NFS server ACE! - However the UID/GID of the subdirs and folders remained unchanged, they did not reflect the new "Effective" ownership or group membership.
    7. I "believe" because I was using UUUA and working "behind" the UID/GID presentation layer for the NFS client, it did not update that presentation layer. It might do that "if" I were using a Mapping mechanism and mapped UID/GID to Windows User SIDs and
Group SIDs. Windows 2008r2 no longer has a "simple" Mapping server, it does not accept flat text files and requires a Schema extension to Active Directory just to MAP a windows account to a UID/GID.. a lot of overhead. Windows Server 2012 accepts flat text
files like /etc/passwd and /etc/group to perform this function and is next on my list of things to see if that will update the UID/GID based on the Windows ACE entries. Since the Local ACE take precedence "over" Inherited ACEs there could be a problem. The
Inheritance appears to be intended [only] to retain Administrative rights over user created subdirs and files by adding an additional ACE at the time of creation.
    8. I did verify from the NFS client side in Linux that "Even though" the UID/GID seem to reflect the local non-root user should not have the ability to traverse or create new files, the "phantom" NFS Server ACEs are in place and do permit the function..
reconciling the "view" with "reality" appears problematic, unless the User Mapping will update "effective" rights and ownership in the "view"

My NFS source in XBMC recently stopped working. I'm not postive what caused it, I tried downgrading libnfs and the linux kernel to back a few months to when I'm certain it was working, but with no success. I also tried downgrading XBMC to 12.3 also without any success.
Mounting my NFS share still works fine using nfsutils with `mount -t nfs desktop:/home/evan/documents/multimedia ~/some-folder`
    Here is my xbmc.log
    This is the relevant section:
    02:43:49 T:139805856254016 DEBUG: Joystick 0 button 1 Up
    02:43:49 T:139804569323264 DEBUG: SECTION:LoadDLL(libnfs.so.4)

    02:43:50 T:139805856254016 DEBUG: CGUIMediaWindow::GetDirectory (sources://video/)
And here's what I see in my journal on the server:
    May 26 02:29:44 desktop rpc.mountd[339]: authenticated mount request from 192.168.1.101:50874 for /home/evan/documents/multimedia (/home/evan/documents/multimedia)
I had a similar problem about a year ago that turned out to be a bug in libnfs that I was able to work around by downgrading the kernel. But again, that doesn't seem to be working this time around.
Is anyone currently successfully using NFS with their arch XBMC setup? Any ideas?
Edit: Sorry, realized I probably should have posted this under "Network, Server, and Protection". If a mod would like to move it please do!

I've been posting some of my findings over in this XBMC forum thread and I've made a little bit of progress.
The summary of it is: Using the latest git version of libnfs (which I will upload a PKGBUILD to the AUR) I'm able to connect when XBMC is running on the same machine running the NFS server. However on my HTPC I'm getting the error "socket error Connection refused(111)." with nothing in my journal. It's definitely a problem with libnfs, since using the new `nfs-ls` utility provided in libnfs-git fails. So I don't _think_ it's an XBMC issue. Perhpase it's time to open a issue in the libnfs github repo.
@mod24: What specifically did you have to downgrade to get it working?

Have a MacMini that is dropping NFS Share connections, Using cifs://servername/path however the NFS Share is dropped everyday without fail.  Is there a better way to setup this share?  I've got 5 other Macs that use the same NFS Share and none of them are dropping the shared connection.  This is on OSX 10.9.x Maverick.

cifs:// is not NFS cifs:// is effectively SMB i.e. Windows filesharing, NFS is Unix filesharing, furthermore cifs:// is a way of forcing Mavericks to use SMB version 1 protocol. Normally you would use smb:// which will default to trying to use SMB version 2 protocol.
Saying all that, SMB version 1, SMB version 2, and NFS should all normally work fine. It is possible that the server may be configured to disconnect idle users although one would expect this to happen with other users as well. It is perhaps more likely that your problem Mavericks Mac maybe going to sleep periodically, while asleep the connection to the server maybe being lost. Apple's own server software has specific cleverness to allow clients to sleep and resume their connection when they wake.
Therefore it might be worth checking your Energy Saver settings on this Mac and disabling computer sleep.

    hi,
somewhere on the windows machineshould be something like "network setup wizard". exactly where it is and what it is called i cannot remember off the top of my head, windows help is actually slightly useful here, it should have a link to it.
all the options checked on the mac are only what services the mac is offering to other machines, they have nothing to do with the services it can access (mostly...).
oh yeah, to actually connect to the pc after you have turned its sharing on, use the finder, or, when it does not show the pc (this happens on and off, possibly a refresh problem apple...) choose go --> connect to server and enter smb://<pc's name or ip>
to find the ip, the easiest way i think is
    start --> run --> cmd ->> ipconfig

  • Adding NFS Share to Mountain Lion Server

    Alright, here goes.
The company I work for has been using SL server for years and wanted to test a possible upgrade to ML server for NFSv4. Downloaded ML to test machine and ML server. I mounted it via server connector (nfs://blah blah..you get the idea) volume that I want to share comes up on desktop but will not show under the server app. I also have access to posix but I need full access to acl as well.
I'm trying to figure out how to access this NFS share so that I can share it from the server but cannot seem to get it working. To those who know OSX servers I probably sound like a moron, but I'm just an I.T. guy tasked with setting up a test server even though I'm not a "server guy". Any information would be greatly appreciated.
One more question. Would a migration from SL to ML server also bring along this volume? Thanks again.

I upgraded today and had the same issue. I took following steps to fix my computer.
Boot into Recovery Partition (Hold Option Button while booting)
    Open Terminal.
    Type resetpassword
    Select your hard drive
    Select the user account (Administrator)
Enter a new password for the user
    Reenter password
    Save
    Restart
Boot normally, Login as Adminstrator with the new password and add "Admin" permission to your account.
    Restart
Everything should be working as expected

    Hi,
Though XP is not certified, R12 should work on it (I already have R12 running on XP Professional).
Linux should be more stable. Refer to the following document for details about R12 installation on Linux.
