Nikon D5200 and Lightroom 4 - Incompatible Raw Files

I just purchased a Nikon D5200. When I attempted to import my photographs into Lightroom 4, the raw files were incompatible. Every support topic I found said that I needed to go to the help menu in Lightroom and click "check for updates." But when I go to the help menu there is no option to check for updates. After I attempted to import the files and the dialog box said that the import failed there was a option to check for updated. When I clicked on this nothing happened.
I manually downloaded version 4.4. I installed it, but when I open Lightroom it still says I am running 4.1. I have restarted Lightroom and my computer.

On my MAC, Lightroom has ALWAYS replaced the old one.  This has been on Snow Leopard thru Mountain Lion.   It just replaces the "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4.app" in the applications folder with the new package.  The Dock icon then points to the new one.  I have never ran a RC so maybe this has something to do with it.

I have the RX100 and confess to be an Adobe fan.   You did not say which Lightroom or which elements you want to use.  You need the latest versions.
Photoshop Elements 11 comes with Adobe Camera RAW (ACR) version 7.0 in place when you install it.  Under the help menu, there is a choice to check for updates.  If you do, ACR 7.2 installs.  The RX100 is included in 7.2.  Previous versions of Photoshop Elements will not udate to 7.2.  When you open a RAW photo, a screen pops up that lets you adjust, convert and save to something Photoshop Elements can handle.
You have to have Lightroom 4.2 to get RX100 usefulness.  Lightroom uses, but hides, the ACR engine.  Instead the slider controls are built in the user interface.  When you buy it, it installs as 4.0.  The help menu also has an update choice so that you can get to 4.2 from 4.0.
You didn't ask, but Premier Elements 11 is a good choice for video because it is he first version that "officially" supports the high quality 1080p60 or "PS" setting in the RX100.
On T day, I shot RAW photos of my granddaughters dancing to a Wii game in terrible light.  Yesterday I "adjusted" the batch of RAW shots taken with the RX100 in Lightroom and saved them as .jpg files.  Today, I wll make a video in Premier Elements from those .jpg images, put in some pan and zoom effects, add a sound track and put it on Vimeo.
My view is that an RX100 owner needs PSE 11, PrE 11 and Lightroom 4 to take advantage of the camera's capabilties.  Setting it on "fine" .jpg and uploading snapshots to Flicker leaves an awful lot on the table!

  • Nikon D5200 and raw files

I recently purchased a Nikon D5200 and I could not open the raw files in Elements 9.  I downloaded all updates for Camera Raw and it still did not work.  I found a question/answer with the same problem and it recommended updating the DNG Converter or purchasing Elements 11.  I did both and I still get a message that my camera model is not supported by the Camera Raw version I have.  I verified per the website it is supported.  Why can't I open my files?

My guess is even though you upgraded to the latest version of Elements you haven't updated to the latest version of ACR, the Adobe website lists ACR 7.3 is required for the D5200.

  • Nikon D5500 and Lightroom  RAW file

Just got my Nikon D5500 and Lightroom will not recognize the RAW file.  Does anyone know of an available update?

AT THIS TIME, the only way to use D5500 RAWs is to use the software supplied by Nikon, convert them to TIF, and import those into Lightroom.
At some point in the future, Lightroom should be able to import the D5500 RAWs directly, but no one knows when that will be. Possibly 2-3 months, but I have no inside information, I could be totally wrong.

  • Lightroom 4 raw files Nikon D600

received lightroom 4 with my Nikon D600 & can't import raw files.  It says it does not recognize the files & also can't view the thumbnails.  using a card reader

That camera requires at least Lightroom 4.3.  If you have only installed from the disk that came with your camera you need to update your version.  The last version you can update to is version 4.6, and that will support your camera as well.

  • Nikon D7000 and Lightroom and Elements

I just purchased a Nikon D7000 and cannot open RAW images in Lightroom 2 or Elements 7.  I have been using these 2 programs successfully with images from my Nikon D70s.  Has anyone else encountered this problem?

You need Lightroom 3.3 or Elements 9 to process Nikon D7000 raw photos.
An alternative is to download the DNG Converter (version 6.3) and convert your D7000 .NEF files to DNG, in which case your versions of Elements and Lightroom will be able to process the DNG photos.

  • Nikon D5200 and old LR versions?

I have purchased the Nikon D5200 and want to use Lightroom to edit my images. Will the older versions of Lightroom have the built in presets to cope with the distortion that is often seen at the wider angles with the Nikon? If not, what is the oldest version that I can get? Thanks

Lr4.3 will read the files... but why not just get the latest Lr5.2??
Yes, lens correction will be applied for most lenses.
You will need to check the lens or lenses you have against the listings on the Adobe site but most commone Nikon leses have profiles.

  • Compatibility issue with Nikon's D700 and Aperture downloading RAW files.

Need a little help with this one - purchased a NIKON D700 (today) and tried to download RAW files into Aperture - got a bad message - unsupported image format - (shows on a reddish background)
I worked on the problem for about 4 hours, both with the software and the camera, but to no avail... upon inital download you see a small image but the message occurs when the image is clicked on.
Thank you in advance for any comment or idea you might have.... occurring

You will have to wait until Apple updates the MacOS to recognize the D700 in its RAW profile. It's not listed yet:

You'll have to shoot JPEG or use Nikon's software until Apple gets around to it. Maybe try Lightroom.

  • Have Nikon 1J1 and want to open file in Raw?

I have Nikon 1J1 and I took pictures in Raw. When I went open file from my Adobe Elements 9 it said it cant open this file. Can someone tell he why and how to fix this? Do I need an update?

The only update you could do is updating to pse 10.
You could however use the 7.1 DNG Converter to convert your raw files to dng copies which will then open in pse 9.

  • How can I import an Aperture Catalog into Lightroom and retain the RAW file as well as the files with the edits?

I have several catalogs in Aperture that I would like to import to Lightroom 5 and I want to retain the original RAW files as well as the files with the edits.  How can I do this?

Well, you can bring in the raw file (without edits), and you can bring in a rendered RGB file (e.g. jpeg or tiff) with edits baked in, but what you CAN'T do is bring in a raw file, with the non-destructive Aperture edits, and have Lr translate those Aperture edits into Lightroom edits.
Put another way: no raw converter/editor can understand the edits of any other raw converter/editor. So, you have to work with a rendered version, and/or re-edit from scratch in a new raw converter/editor.
PS - it would be feasible to write a rough translator which approximated raw edits in one world into edits in another, but such does not exist yet for Aperture -> Lightroom, that I know of.

  • I have a new camera and cannot import RAW files into lightroom.

I have a new Sony NEX 5 and have tried importing the ARW files into lightroom. The files are recognized when I import photos from device. When I choose the .arw files to import, I receive an message "unknown errors occurred" and files won't import. I have never had a problem importing files from a card or directly from my older camera. Any suggestions?

Check here to see if your camera is supported yet.
If its a camera launched in the last month it won't be. But you can try LR 3.2 RC and see if it has been added. Otherwise you will have to wait until LR supports the format. This is a problem caused by manufacturers constantly using their own formats which require Adobe to investigate every new format before adding it to LR. In 99.99% of the cases the so called new format from the manufacturers is just a line of code with the name of the camera in it. You can use a EXIF editor tool (just google, lots of free ones) to change the name in the RAW file to one presently supported and then convert to DNG. If you do go down this road then ensure you also keep a copy of the original files just in case something has actually changed.
If you are still using LR 2.7 and the format you need was introduced with LR 3 you don't need to upgrade, you can just use Adobes standalone converter to convert the files to DNG and then import them.

  • Creative Cloud is always empty and I cannot update LR and PS and cannot open RAW files from my new camera!

My Creative Cloud is always empty.  I've had this trouble for over a year.  I cannot update Lightroom because of it and Photoshop does not update properly.  I cannot open the RAW files from my new camera, a Nikon D750.  Each time I want to update, I have to talk to you and delete things and reinstall things but it doesn't fix it properly!
I have contacted Adobe before and always have to go through a tedious delete stuff and reinstall, then next time it happens all over again.
I'm really fed up with it and want to know how to fix it properly.  I am in the UK, if that makes any difference.
