Nikon Lense compatibility

My D40X pooped out and I want to buy a D5100 (body Only).  Will my lenses and speedlight work with the 5100?  I have a Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 70-300 1:4.5-5.6G and a Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-55 1:3.5-5.6 G II ED lense.  Also:  Nikon SB800 speedlight.

When I did a search on D5100 models on BBuy site, there is more than one product and there are 247 reviews on one model.  Is this the review you are referring to?
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Nikon+-+D5100+16.2-Megapixel+DSLR+Camera+-+Black/2553883.p?skuId=2553883...
My thoughts....
It is one review out of many.  I did not see any other reviews with focussing problems he is describing.
He mentions trying to focus 1 foot from the lens.... most lenses need 2 or 3 feet to auto focus properly.  That lens needs 11", so he's just barely giving the lens enough clearance to focus.  He mentions everything is "one plane".  At 1 foot?  That does not count.
did he have enough light?  Lens needs enough light to auto focus.  You mentioned having a SB800.  Use the autofocus light to help with the auto-focus.
did he have enough contrast?  If everything is one colour it can be hard to autofocus
there are only 11 focus points on this older, entry model.  You might want newer higher end models with more focus points.  Love the 51 autofocus points my Nikon's.
more expensive models also have more cross-type focus points.  Entry models might only have ONE.
I had problems with the D700 with a tamron lens (28-300mm).  Once I replaced the third party lens with a Nikon.... the focussing problems went away.

  • Lens profiles for Nikon lenses

    Hello,
Does anyone know a site where users have posted lens profiles that they have made for the Nikon lenses which are NOT included in the Photoshop CS 5 software?
I have a Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 lens that needs correction when shooting at or near 17mm - and I hate to have to make my own profile if someone has already done it.  I have used the profile supplied by Adobe for my Nikon 10.5mm fisheye lens - and it is spectacular!
Is there a master site where users have posted lens profiles for Nikon lenses?

  • Request a Nikon lense profile for ACR 6.1?

I apologize if this should be posted somewhere else. I did not think the feature request qualified.
I am using a Nikon D80 with a 'AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED' lense and it is not in the current list of profiled lenses in ACR 6.1 RC-1.
Is it possible to request inclusion of this lense in the database, or is it just too old or not professional enough?
If not possible to include, can I assume that I need to build my own profile?
I do own a copy of PT Lens which has the profile, so not a huge deal - but; I would love to stay in ACR and then go direct to PS.
Running current PS CS5 on Mac Pro (Early 2008) and OS X (10.6.3).
Vanilla installs of all software other than the ACR 6.1 RC (only third-party PS plug-ins are current versions of PT Lens and Photomatix Pro).
Thanks for any info, or a shove in the right direction for posting.

Thank you for responding and I certainly understand.
I really want to thank all the Adobe employees and other experienced individuals who are helping us. It is very much appreciated and a breath of fresh air compared to some other big company forums where responses from employees are either extremely rare or non-existent.
I am enjoying PS CS5 and know all the small bugs will be worked out in time and the features we depend on will receive the polish they deserve (or at least that has been my experience since PS 6).
Thanks again and I will either use PT Lens in the interim or perhaps see what I can do with the profile creator.
Love the new additions to ACR!

  • Lightroom 3 doesn't recognise Nikon Lenses, until you tell it Nikon is Manufacturer

Does anyone know why / if there is a fix for this problem. I shoot a Nikon D3S/D3X. Lightroom won't recognise my lenses in the Lens Correction area of Develop. It only recognises them after I put in Nikon as the manufacturer.
Surely the Lightroom software is clever enough to recognise Nikon cameras?
For info am running the 64bit version of Lightroom on a Windows 7 64 bit system.

Oh, it's plenty clever. The problem is that Nikon is also very clever, and cleverness sometimes ends up creating problems.
The fundamental problem is that not all vendors place metadata like the make in the expected places in the image file, so Lr has to resort to many tricks for getting this information reliably. If it cannot reliably get the info, it opts to not guess, as this would be much worse behaviour.
I suspect the "maker notes" metadata in the files made by this camera body aren't quite expected, so once you confirm it is a Nikon, then it can figure out the rest. You can confirm this by supplying an example image by yousendit and others can inspect the metadata to see how it is being stored.
One workaround is to massage these files with a metadata tool to edit the make information into the expected locations prior to importing.
You may also want to raise this with Adobe support, as they might be able to tweak the cleverness to take into consideration Nikon's cleverness.

  • Lightroom 3.6 and Nikon D5200 Compatibility

I have been using Lightroom 3.6 for a few years.I recently bought a Nikon D5200. I shoot exclusively in RAW. When I tried to import my RAW images, a message says it does not recognize the Nikon D5200. I tried converting my setting to import as DNG and it still doesn't work. Am I going to have to purchase a more recent version of Lightroom?

You have to install the DNG Converter on your computer it is a stand alone program and its only function is to convert raw files from supported digital cameras to the dng file format. You will have to somehow have the files transfered from your camera to a folder of your choice then you can use the DNG Converter to convert the files in the folder. To do this boot the program and then select the folder that contains the raw files. See attached screen capture.

  • Nikon 8000 compatability with latest imac (i7 core) and Snow leopard

I am about to update my ancient Mac and have noticed on many photo forums that the above combination may not work and is prone to glitches at best. Does anyone here have actual experience running this combo? I understand that Silverfast Ai should run well with Snow Leopard but the software is a bit clunky and I'd much prefer to use the Nikon scan software and not have to go thru another learning curve. Any info would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks

Dell never includes decent PSU. Too bad you aren't a system builder!
Yes you can buy OEM System Builder but then that can't be installed on another motherboard if needed later.
Macs generally aren't easy and not supported to do processor upgrades. Pick up a P55 or X58 motherboard and you can and then have a tricked out gaming PC.

  • Nikon d7100 compatability

    Hello,
I have iphoto 9 on my system and it is unable to handle RAW files gebnerated by nikon d7100. Is there any pach to be downloaded?
    thanks
    -kamal

And just to let you know, the kernel (OS) underlying mac os/x does not have anything to do with RAW file format. That is entirely  user space code.
What I said was that Raw support is at OS level. That means that Raw updates are made and included in OS updates and provide the same access to the Raws in multiple apps. Now obviously you now more than anyone about it, so why not tell Apple what they're doing wrong
iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback
there's no point telling us. No one is suggesting that you upgrade anything, just that the upgrades are required if you want the Raw support. Upgrading to OS 10.7 will cost you about $20.  And that's not even installing the latest OS.
Adobe certainly did have a Photoshop for OS 9. I believe every version up to Photoshop 6 (note that's Photoshop 6, not CS6) ran on OS 9. None of them are updated.

  • IPhoto/Nikon D300 compatability

IPhoto 6.0.6 won't recognize images shot with new Nikon D300 camera. Solution? Thanks

    Michael
Will iPhoto 6 ever be able to work with D300 NEF format?
No one outside of Apple knows. However, with 10.5.2 and Aperture 2, they seem to have decoupled RAW support from the OS. So it may never be added to v6 - which is no longer in development and hasn't seen an update in more than a year.

  • Nikon D1x compatability

I thought I could transfer my photos into iphoto from my camera Nikon D1x by Firewire to my new Poweerbook but apparently not. I connect up the Firewire from camera to Mac Powerbook(Tiger)and nothing happens. Is it true that I really have to have the Nikon Capture software installed as well to let the Powerbook interact with my camera and therefore download into iphoto? This is my first Apple, (just bought 2 weeks ago), and I cannot believe that Windows XP works with every upgrade of Nikon Capture from v.4.0 ~v.4.3 yet each upgade of OS X means you for example ditch the Capture v.4.2, and then have to buy the latest v.4.3. I am amazed, somebody please tell me I am wrong!

    Kyle:
Go to the Blue Apple menu and select About this Mac. Then in the next window click on "More Information". That will open System Profiler and under the USB section you should see the camera listed when connected.
I recommend using a card reader and uploading to a folder on the desktop before importing into iPhoto. You will save the camera's battery and avoid the possibility of a camera shutdown during uploading to iPhoto. That can really mess up things. Also don't let iPhoto erase the card or camera. Too many reports of incomplete uploads and complete deletions. Since you're using the large RAW files you many want to look into a Firewire card reader. They are blazingly fast.
    Good luck.

  • Nikon D80 Compatibility

I just bought a D80. It appears that iphoto does not support downloading RAW images from the D80.. Anyone know if Apple plans to take care of that problem? Thanks for your help.. Gil

It's on the official list so I wouldn't worry about it.

Actually, there are many more cameras (including mine) that are not on the list but are still compatible. The list includes only those that Apple has checked.

  • Lightroom 4.1 won't recognize my supported Nikon camera and lenses under "Lens Corrections"?

Develop Module-Under Lens Corrections, Enable Profile Corrections, Lightroom 4.1 won't auto recognize my Nikon D5000 camera and lenses even though they ARE supported.  When I manually choose Nikon in this widow, I can only get 8 of the multitude of supported Nikon lenses to show in the drop down.  Of these 8 lenses, none match any of my lenses.  How do I fix this?  I would like to be able to click the check box for "Enable Profile Corrections" and have it auto recognize my camera and lens.
    Here is my history:
    I shoot in RAW
This is a new install of Lightroom 4.1 on a new computer with all updates installed.
    I'm running Win 7 64bit
I previously used Lightroom 3 on a different computer and it worked great with Lightroom 3
I'm a REALTOR that uses Lightroom to edit my photos, not a pro.  So, please give answers that a non-pro can understand.  I am really hoping there is some simple answer to my problem.
I did search the help file first and couldn't find an answer.
Thank you in advance for the help!!

OMG... I'm such a nit-wit!!  I switched the setting in my camera to try something and forgot to swith it back!
I've been digging through this for more that an hour and never bothered to check the file setting.
    Thanks for the suggestion!

  • Lion and iPhoto and Nikon Camera

Hello. I don't know if this is a Lion or iPhoto problem. So I'm posting this here. I have a Nikon Coolpix 990 camera. I took some photos today. When I attempted to import the photos to my iMac (2009, i7) running Lion with iPhoto 09 version 8.1.2, the camera wasn't recognized and I could not import my photos. However, when I connected the camera to my Macbook Pro late 2008 running Snow Leopard v. 10.6.8 and iPhoto 08 version 7.1.5, the camera was recognized and the import was successful. I rebuilt my iMac's iPhoto library but I have not attempted to sync my camera to it as I deleted the photos. Why was I unable to import the photos to my iMac?
    zoz

The pictures were able to be uploaded to iPhoto using a card reader. Apparently, in Lion, support from Nikon is no longer provided.

  • White Balance differences Nikon and Panasonic RAW

Sorry if this is an idiot question.  On recent holdiay my wife and I shot similar photos but I was using a Nikon D200 and she a Panasonic G2, both in RAW.   We combine our photos together afterwards and print them in photobooks. It is therefore important that photos of the same thing are the same colour!  I naively assumed that if I set the colour temp and tint to be the same, assuming the photos were taken in the same light, that this would be the case.  Using the WB dropped on the same white shirt on each photo I am coming up with Nikon settings 4,000 lower in temp and -10 in tint to get a similar colour.
Could some one exlain easily why white isn't the same temp? Is this just that Nikon and Panasonic use proprietary RAW that will always be different? Would it help to convert everything to DNG first?
    Thanks
    Mike

Nikon and Panasonic use different sensors. If you ever shot film, this is like using differnt film stock.
Sensors require a calibration for how they reproduce colour. These calibrations differ, you are offered a choice built into LR for many cameras and can make your own using the free tool from Adobe.. Setting a the same WB across files from different sensors will not in itself produce the same colour response. It may offer a starting point for what is called in the world of film making colour grading.
Other factors also effect colour reproduction, the lens being just one of them and you will be usually using different lenses on a Nikon than on a Lumix camera (although Nikon lenses can of course fit m 4:3's cameras, so you could use the same lens for all the shots which would help).
In the end you will have to colour match the images yourself by eye. You can then create a pre set.
Matching colours taken by different cameras or in different light situations is an art form in itself.  In film and video production colour grading is a full time job.

  • Nikon 10-24 Lens Correction

I just discovered Lightroom's lens correction presets for specific lenses. While many of my Nikon lenses are listed, my latest lens (the Nikon 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED) is not listed. It's one of Nikon's newest lenses.
I'd like to be able to quickly correct distortion in my photos. Does Lightroom add additional lenses over time to their list of presets?
If not, are there 3rd party presets for correction that I could take advantage of?
    Thanks!

And read the manual, especially the shooting guide.  It's really not all that hard.

  • Nikon D50 Err Malfunction

is there any way to fix this without taking it into a shop? I've tried releasing the shutter; however, that doesn't fix the problem.
Also, does BestBuy help with camera repairs or would I have to take it to a Ritz Camera place or some other camera shop?

    Hi zcarr,
The F-- error on a Nikon DSLR usually means there that the lens and the camera body aren't properly communicating. Other than a defect inside the camera body itself this can be caused the contacts between the lens and the body is dirty. To remedy this issue just clean the contacts, and see if this works.
This communication error can also be due to the use of a third-party lens (i.e. Tamron, Sigma, etc...). Although these third-party lenses are often very good lenses, sometimes the lens mount doesn't mate snuggly on the camera body and there is some play when you turn the lens left and right. This can cause the contacts to be misaligned causing the communication with the camera body to become disrupted. There really isn't a remedy for this issue other than purchasing Nikon lenses.
If cleaning the contacts doesn't resolve the issue, and you are using a Nikon lens, I would suggest having the camera looked at by an authorized service technician. We do repair cameras, and to arrange for repair of this camera from us just bring it to your local Best Buy® store and they will be able to send it out to be looked at by an authorized service technician.
    I hope this helps!
