No /dev/dsp, some programs failed to play sound

I'm using chakra-2010.09 and there is no /dev/dsp after a default installation. Programs using phonon as backend (KDE's login music and the default music player, Bangarang) can play sound without problems. But others like vlc, flashplugin and wine cannot. Vlc just report errors about no /dev/dsp. How can this be fixed?
Then I tried #modprobe snd_pcm_oss snd_mixer_oss snd_seq_oss, the module created /dev/dsp1. then I maked a soft link to /dev/dsp but vlc said "cannot open device /dev/dsp".
I also tried using osspd and vlc can play sound now, but flashplugin and wine still have problems.
Here are some of my system information:

How come some apps won't play sound on a USB device but only on the internal speaker while others can? Mac OS 10.8.5

You can simply set your system preferences

Your question seems a bit vague to me though. So can you actually inform us of what it is you are trying to do and give us examples with named kit.

  • Some apps won't play sound through iPad2 speakers

I've noticed since updating to iOS 5 and 5.0.1, I've got more apps that won't play sound through ipad2 speakers, but will play sound through earphones though.  Using the same app on the iphone plays sound through the iphone speakers as normal.
It seems to be picky with which apps it does this to as Sky News/BBCiplayer/YouTube/Video/ IMDb all play sound through ipad speakers. Apps like FilmOn plus/ FreeAppMagic/ Falling Gems/ Bejeweled2/ FNS Shift2 will only play sound through earphones.  These Apps updating to the new iOS doesn't fix the sound issue either.
I can use an app that plays sound through iPad speakers, then use an app that doesn't play sound through the speakers, then use another app that does play sound through speakers, so the earphone connection actuator doesn't look like the problem to me.  Maybe some sound drivers may have been lost or deleted with new iOS updates over wifi...?
    Any help would be appreciated.

See if perhaps this is the reason why some apps aren't playing sound.
If you lose sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds may have been muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

  • [solved] Some programs cause problems for sound in other programs.

Today I noticed that audio has stopped working in some applications, but not others. The programs that I know where it doesn't work are:
    Hotline Miami (game)
    VLC
    Dungeons of Dredmor (game)
    Uplink (game)
Programs where I know it works are:
mplayer / smplayer (on the same files where vlc does not work)
    mpd
    Programs run through wine
Standalone flash player and the firefox flash plugin
Additionally, when I run a program where audio doesn't work, I have to restart programs where it does. For example, I'll pause mpd, open Hotline Miami, and then quit. When I try to unpause mpd, I'll get the error message "Failed to open audio output". But if I try a couple times, it will eventually resume. It's a similar situation for mplayer. I'll have to quit and restart mplayer a couple times after trying one of the other programs before audio will work.
Further complicating the matter is that there are no error messages for the programs where audio does not work. I can't seem to track down the problem. I also don't do much with sound beyond using mpd and mplayer, so I don't know when this started.
My hardware is a Lenovo IdeaPad z580 with integrated Intel HDA audio.
EDIT: I just noticed that the problem is not what I thought. Part of the problem was simply due to volume. So I can get sound in the listed programs. However, running those programs does still cause the problem for the mplayer and mpd where I have to restart them.

Gah. It does appear to have been a pulseaudio thing. I hadn't even realized it was installed, let alone running. I've fixed it. Thanks for the help! And thanks, brebs, for the asoundrc file. I think it'll help a lot.

  • PRE8  Some MPEG's dont play sound?

I have created 50 mpg files. Three of them dont have sound when played on my Vista HP [Media Player 11] and WIN7 HP [Media player 12] machines, but all play fine on my WIN-XP Dell [Media player 11]. On my Samsung netbook [Win 7 starter] they didnt play at all. After loading some codec, I now get picture, but no sound. My conclusion is that these 3 files of 50 are some how flawed, but the XP version or it's Codec are more forgiving. Another point is if I import these flawed? MPG's back into PRE8, the audio tracks look good and play in Premiere. When I make a new MPG using the bad files, then I get a new MPG that plays everywhere.
So, what went wrong with these 3 files? They were created on the Vista box, which has only one 500GB drive and 3GB ram.
I really dont like to do the same thing and get different results. Most important: How do I prevent errors like this?

My sources are DVDs, from which I had only the VOB files. Some of the problem DVDs had a brief message about indexing and conforming audio. These DVDs were made by my son-in-law on some machine that made DVDs from tapes played on his camcorders. I would normally use the original or an AVI copy of it. The analog tape data is now only available from the VOB files.  Some of the later digital data, I can go back and get from the tapes. My real worry is about ongoing problems. I have had no problems with the AVIs, but the are 4 times the size. I had thought to end up with mpgs on files that I never plan to edit again.  My longer goal is to put copies on removeable drives like 1TB WD passport, which I can put in the safety depoist box.
In terms of being sure that these files can be played, does Adobe have download for codec that work with the files PRE8 generates?
I have just upgraded from PSE 8 to CS5 and am thinking to buy a new box. I am not a big video user, but am upgrading my Nikon D80 to a D90, which can take HD vid.  I am thinking I will get an Intel I7, Win7-64. I think I can afford 8-12GB ram. I guess for the video , should think about at least two HDs. Is a stand alone NVIDIA needed for Photoshop, or mainly for the video?  That seems to bump up the size of the power supply.
This is tough on an old guy, so any help would be great.

  • Play sound behavior in CS4 fails to play sound on click of a flash button

For my college coursework I have created several flash buttons to use as track preview images. The button works fine however trying to get the track to play seems an impossibility!
I've inserted the SWF flash button into the place I want it in my table and added the "playsound" behavior to it to try and play the preview - no luck.
The sounds are currently 128kbps MP3s.
Any light into this matter would be much apreciated as i really want this to work

You need to code your MP3 Player in Flash with Action Script.
Check the Flash forums and specify which Action Script version (1, 2, 3) you're using.

  • I want to play video on my computer to make some analysis to frames, the problem that I face ,I can't change video frame rate using labview, but I can change frame rate to the video out of labview using some program

    HI All
I want to play video on my computer to make some analysis to it's frames, the problem that I face ,I can't change video frame rate using labview, but I can change frame rate to the video out of labview using some program .
I used IMAQ AVI Read Frame VI
for example I have avi video It's frame rate is 25 fbs ,my image processing code is very fast that can process more 25 fbs,so I want to accelerate video acquisition

    Hi abdelhady,
I looked into this further, and reading an AVI file into LabVIEW faster than its frames per second won't be possible. LabVIEW could read in frames faster than 25fps, but because it will be pulling the available frame at that point in time this would just give you duplicate frames. If you want to be able to read in frames at faster than 25fps, you would need to speed up your AVI file before reading into LabVIEW.
There's a good shipping example to show how to read in from an AVI file, "Read AVI File.vi". You'll notice that they add timing to make sure that the while loop runs at the right speed to match up with the frames per second of the file being read. This is to make sure you're not reading duplicate frames.
    Thank you,

  • Randomly skips/fails to play some samples during playback?

Randomly skips/fails to play some samples during playback?

You're right that was foolish let me clarify.
Raising the I/O buffer thing is a good idea, i've tried that already though and no joy
BASICALLY i've had this problem with a couple of tracks, ones which i have worked on the longest and probably the ones with the most effect plugins and tracks used. Seemingly at random during playback some of the samples dont play (and some even stop playing halfway through the sample). If the regions are bounced, the resulting wav file visibly splits the original sound where the computer 'decided' to stop/restart playing the sample. Again, i haven't found a pattern: - at one point a four bar loop with three tracks solo'd would play all the tracks perfectly during playback for a few seconds, then suddenly switch to only playing one track, then switch back after another few seconds.
    Weird.
I think it may be related to previous experience which i have had with the Space Designer and Echo effects, where the echo or reverb sound itself cuts out halfway through the sound/after a seemingly random amount of time (and then cuts back in).
I've seen this reverb and effect problem on more than one computer, but the original problem with the track playback is, in my experience, unique to my system.
The computer i'm using is not old or at all running out of memory (although i realise this does not exempt it from being the cause of the problem)
Anyway this has been trolling me for weeks and its driving me mad
    Thanks

  • Some programs stop playing after a few minutes

Hi. I've noticed something pretty frustrating over the past month (only have had FIOS for a few months). Random programs don't play beyond a few minutes. I thought it was a MR DVR issue, but it even happened on a few shows recorded on the same box I was playing it on.
I tried to reboot the entire system, so unplugged all DVRs and router - plugged back in after a minute. Same thing still.
This really hit home tonight when I tried watching the most recent episode of The Walking Dead - of course that one won't play beyond 5 minutes.
    What do I do?

Sorry to hear about the troubles you guys are having with the DVR. There could be two explanations for this. Either the error is within the box or the feed being sent for that channel. To address this if it's a problem with the DVR functioning, please press menu, then go to CUSTOMER SUPPORT, then IN HOME AGENT, then SET TOP BOX AUTO CORRECTION. Let me know if you need further assistance after doing that.

  • Can't play sound from multiple programs

So I have this new shiny box running Arch64 with a ASRock N68-S motherboard. I installed alsa and I am able to play music just fine using amarok or mpd. However, when I try playing two sounds at once, there is a short pause and the first program becomes silent, and then the second kicks in.
According to the wiki, dmix should work automatically with this version of alsa. I tried seting up dmix "the old way" using /etc/asound.conf (hey, you never know) but no luck either.
    Lspci lists my card as
00:05.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP61 High Definition Audio (rev a2)
I figured this was a bit vague and went to the manufacturer's site and found out the actual name is
    5.1 CH Windows® Vista™ Premium Level HD Audio (Realtek ALC662 / VIA® VT1708S / VT1705 Audio Codec)
The Alsa wiki suggests to test dmix using these instructions but this simple test fails miserably, alsaplayer windows show up and complain "no stream found". So it seems and one of the unlucky few for which dmix doesn't just work.
However, OSS4 works with hardly no setup. But I just don't want to use it since most applications aren't OSS-aware, there is no KDE integration and so on.
What sould I do? I'd happy to report a bug upstream if necessary but I realised audio in Linux is way more complicated than previously thought and I'd rather make sure I haven't over looked something. I'm so confused I can't tell what my actual soundcard vendor is: nVidia, Realtek or Via?
edit: oh and of course, nothing of interest in /var/log/everything.log
    Thanks!

Not necessary. ALSA supports dmix by default. Don't edit that file.
Let me explain what's happening. mpd has a stupid default config, of using OSS rather than ALSA. And OSS screws up dmix.
    For example, my ~/.mpdconf is:
    music_directory "~/gnutella/downloads/Cool"
    playlist_directory "~/.mpd/playlists"
    db_file "~/.mpd/mpd.db"
    log_file "~/.mpd/mpd.log"
    error_file "~/.mpd/mpd.error"
    audio_output {
    type "alsa"
    name "Sound Card"
    options "dev=dmixer"
    device "plug:dmix"
Try that, to prove to yourself that I'm right   Also use this good debugging command, from the same ALSA wiki entry (because I put it there):
    fuser -v /dev/snd/* /dev/dsp*
    eldalion wrote:What should I do?
Step 1: File a bug with your distro, for the app (mpd) to default to ALSA instead of OSS. Defaulting to OSS these days is ridiculous - ALSA is the standard sound system in Linux, and that's not gonna change.
Please do this. I'm not doing this, because I don't use Arch or mpd any more.
Step 2: File a bug upstream, to default to ALSA instead of OSS.
Edit: I notice that Ubuntu has the right idea:
    * Update mpd.conf from upstream
        - Configure an ALSA output by default

  • Sound has stopped working; failed to play test tone; format not supported by the device (Vista x64 Ultimate)

I can no longer hear any sound from my speakers/headphones. This happened suddenly yesterday without any hardware changes or noticeable software updates.
-- The sound is not muted and the volume is set to full.
-- In the device manager, my SigmaTel HD Audio device has no warnings or errors.

    Dell XPS M1530
Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 with current updates
    SigmaTel driver version 6.10.0.5866
    **Update**
    I followed the following steps:
        * using regedit, go to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\WMI\AutoLogger\Audio and change the “Start” value from 0 to 1.
        * Reboot the machine
        * Try to play an audio file.
        * Post a link to the generated log file which you can find in: %WINDIR%\system32\LogFiles\Audio
but don't know where to post the resulting AudioSrv.Evm.001 file. It's also not human readable and I can't find what utility parses it for reading.
    **Another update**
Still can't read the EVM. logparser 2.2 can't parse it.
Found this thread which interested me but isn't applicable to x64 (I think):

Dell confirms it's an OS issue after troubleshooting with me for a couple of hours (wow)
Is there a way to look at this EVM file _without_ installing the Windows Driver Kit??

    Hi,
Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet Windows Vista Forum.
Upon your description, I see that you have done a lot of research and tests. Unfortunately, none of these troubleshooting works.
Based on my experience, this issue related to "failed to play test tone" can be related to several reasons. It also includes hardware defect. I am confusing why Dell confirms that the issue is related to Operating System. Could you let me know what operation Dell had troubleshot with you?
Meanwhile, here I just provide more troubleshooting except what you performed. If it doesn't work, I may also need to recommend that you contact Dell for support.
    1. Microsoft has released a Hotfix to troubleshoot related to "Failed to play test tone".
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930883
    2. Make sure that these services are started.
    Windows Audio
    Multimedia Class Scheduler
    Remote Procedure Call
    Windows Audio Endpoint Builder
    3. I noticed that this issue occurred not long ago, I may need to suggest that you perform a System Restore to the previous restore point when the computer without any problem.
    System Restore
    ==============
    1)     Please click on Start and choose All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then Windows Backup.
    2)     Click Restore on the left pane.
    3)     Choose Basic Restore.
    4)     Follow the wizard and click Next.
    5)     If you would like to restore everything in the backup, we can check the box “Restore everything in this backup” on the top of the window.
    6)     We can also browse and choose certain files and folders to restore. Then, click Next.
    7)     Then choose the folder to save the recovered files and click Next.
    8)     When we see a “Restore is complete!” message, click Finish.
Meanwhile, as I know, I'm afraid that there is no other way to look at EVM file except Windows Driver Kit. Maybe there are some third-party software that out of my mind can look at EVM files, you may need to perform more research on Internet.
    Hope this helps. Thanks.

  • No HDMI Audio, Failed to Play Test Tone, Can't Change Default Playback Device

Hello, I'm experiencing some real trouble with my HP Pavilion dv6-2160us (with the i3-330M, no dedicated graphics) Windows 7-64 bit, SP1 PC, and I would greatly appreciate some assistance.
I've created a new thread because, despite the fact that many other people have experienced a problem similar to this and have posted what worked for them, nothing has worked for me.
    The Problem(s):
My main problem is that I cannot get any audio to play from my PC to my HDMI HDTV.
When I plug my HDMI cable into my PC and TV, the TV is recognized in Playback Devices, but nothing can play to it.
When I try to test the TV in playback devices, I get a "Failed to play test tone" error.
Additionally, I'd like to mention some other odd behavior that I think may be a part of the main problem.
In Playback Devices, I cannot change anything. I can't disable or enable a device, I can't set default playback or communication devices, and I can't save changes inside device properties. Every time I try to change something, like the default playback device, nothing happens or the changes are immediately reversed.
    The Question:
How can I get audio to play over HDMI on my PC (It's not a problem with the TV, my other HP machines play audio over HDMI to it just fine.)?
    What I've Tried:
    I have tried:
Changing the default playback devices, which I'm unable to do
Running the Windows 7 Audio Playback troubleshooters from within a clean boot state
Uninstalling and reinstalling the Intel(R) Display Audio driver
Uninstalling and reinstalling the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
Uninstalling the IDT PC Audio program from Programs and Features
Disabling the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
    Nothing has worked.
The drivers I have are the latest issued by HP
How can I get this working? I would really appreciate some assistance.
I'm at the point where I'm ready to try pretty technically-involved suggestions, so, please feel free to post those.
    Your expertise is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Audio doesn't work on some programs after boot (sometimes)

    Check new message dated 30.06.2014
    Hi,
I'm having a weird problem. After booting my computer, the audio sometimes works perfectly, sometimes not at all, and sometimes it works on some programs but not on others. For example last night audio played without problem on Chromium, VLC and Amarok. Today after boot it played on VLC, but not Amarok (didn't realise to check Chromium), and now after reboot it plays on VLC and Amarok but not on Chromium.
Chromium means YouTube (HTML5) and others (Flash).
My DE is KDE (was xfce4 with mostly same audio trouble). Soundcard is USB DAC (SMSL Fort) and on KDE's Audio and Video setting I have it listed at the top and the "test" button works (i.e. it plays a sound).

What is the ouput of cat /proc/asound/cards, aplay -l?
    For an example:
    [firekage@arch_desktop ~]$ cat /proc/asound/cards
    0 [XFi ]: SB-XFi - Creative X-Fi
    Creative X-Fi 20K1 SB073x
    1 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
HDA NVidia at 0xf6080000 irq 17
    2 [U0x46d0x825 ]: USB-Audio - USB Device 0x46d:0x825
USB Device 0x46d:0x825 at usb-0000:00:14.0-7, high speed
    [firekage@arch_desktop ~]$
    [firekage@arch_desktop ~] aplay -l
    card 0: XFi [Creative X-Fi], device 4: ctxfi [IEC958 Non-audio]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 7: HDMI 1 [HDMI 1]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 8: HDMI 2 [HDMI 2]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 9: HDMI 3 [HDMI 3]
    Subdevices: 1/1

    [firekage@arch_desktop ~]$
I think that you have multiple sound devices and their boot order changes after each reboot.

  • Quake 3 /dev/dsp error

I've done some digging trying to search out a solution to this problem, but I am coming up empty.
Fresh install of Quake 3 Arena. On startup, the console reports:
    ------- sound initialization -------
    /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy
    Could not open /dev/dsp
    So I have no sound.
The sound device is a C-Media PCI CMI8738-MC6
    Kernel = kernel26-2.6.20.4-1
I've got system sounds aplenty, and sounds playing DVDs and such. My user is a member of audio. Let me output more info than is probably useful.

If I remember correctly this is a rather common problem with quake. I used the following commands to resolve the problem:
    echo "quake3.x86 0 0 direct" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss
    echo "quake3.x86 0 0 disable" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/oss
