No "DV-PAL 32kHz" Setting In FCP's Easy Setup ?

I have just noticed, that unlike Final Cut Express, Final Cut Pro does not have an Easy Setup for DV audio shot at 12Bit (32kHz).
It is not a problem to me as I never use that setting but I am curious.
Is it simply omitted because no sane user of FCP would choose to shoot 12Bit audio ?
Ian.

Thanks Piero, Links and Studio X.
As you may have guessed, I eventually more or less worked out most of it myself and discovered that Custom Settings were probably the solution.
I originally noticed the lack of the setting when I was answering a question on the FCE forum. I needed the exact wording for the 32kHz Easy Setup and happened to look in FCP only to discover it wasn't there!
Later, when looking at custom setups, I noticed there was no 12-bit option so the information from Studio X is interesting.
Piero, I have a confession! Though I have Tom's and Lisa's books on FCP, I never thought of looking in the Help manual! I must make a point of looking there first in future.
Anyway, I now know all that I need about 32kHz even though I will never use it!
Ian.

  • Changing aspect ration in FCP 7, Easy Setup?

I recently starting editing again in FCP 7 and am running into an aspect ratio problem.
Earlier this fall i tried capturing some clips off of my new camera (Panasonic HVX) and i believe i changed some of the easy setup/capture settings to accommodate the HD footage.  This weekend i used my old mini dv camera (Sony vx2100) to record some skating.
I didn't change the easy setup/other settings prior to capturing the tapes.
The image doesn't look as it looks ok in the viewer, but doesn't fully fill the canvas.
When i export to vimeo, the image doesn't fill the whole screen.
The image itself looks ok, but i believe the aspect ratio is off somehow.
This is a link to how the vimeo export turned out

anybody know what i should do?

You need to ask this on the Final Cut studio forum.

  • FCP 7.0.3 Easy Setup audio setting issues

I have created two custom Easy Setups.
    SD:     DVCPro50 PAL with audio set @ 48.000 kHz, 16-bit, 16 chan
    HD:     DVCProHD 1080i 25fps with audio set @ 48.000kHz, 24-bit, 16 chan
I open FCP, load the SD easy setup.  I then click on Audio/Video settings.
Select "Audio/Video Settings" and view "Capture Presets Summary"
         - Audio format is listed as 48.000 kHz 16-bit 16-chan
Select"Edit" and "Capture Preset Editor" comes up.
         - UnderQuicktime Audio Settings:
              - Device:  AJA Kona 3
              - Format:  48.000 kHz 16-bit 16-chan
If I then select the HD Easy Setup, and then "Audio/Video Settings"
Select"Edit" and "Capture Preset Editor" comes up.
         - UnderQuicktime Audio Settings:
              - Device:  AJA Kona 3
              - Format:  48.000 kHz 16-bit 16-chan (THIS SHOULD BE 24-bit)
    Select the "A\V Device" tab:
The audio device has defaulted to the 16 bit setting as well.
It appears that FCP or AJA is keeping the audio bitrate from the previous Easy Setup.
Even if we close FCP completely, and reopen into a new project, load the HD Easy Setup, the bit rate still shows as 16.
I have tried deleting the following:
    apple.finalcutpro.plist
    Final Cut User Data Folder
    Thanks,
    Mike

The camera definitely recorded in SP, that icon was visible on the viewfinder...
What settings should i be using in FCP to capture the video? From attempted research i found most comments suggesting to use a basic Firewire settings. i have used this in PAL format but the results are poor.
One thing I am confused about is the 32khz or 48khz settings. Which should i be using? I have an older version of FCE 4 where there are many settings for both 32khz and 48khz for DV FireWire but in FCP7 there are only options for 48khz.
Any advice would be welcomed at the moment.
I am also willing to upload clips of what I have to demonstrate visually the poor quality video I am capturing from the Canon

  • How to make a Capture Preset for DV-PAL 32KHz?

I have just noticed that in my FCP 7.0.3 there is no Easy Setup for DV-PAL 32KHz or anywhere in Audio/Video Settings where one can be created.
I realise that no pro would use 32KHz but occasionally it may be necessary to capture old or amateur-shot footage.
So how would one be created, or am I just not seeing the obvious (as usual)?

This is the window I get . . . . . no sign of audio.
Also, with the sequence preset, although 32KHz can be set, there is only the choice of 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit.
    No sign of 12-bit.
So which one should be used?

  • I need to output a PAL HDV project from FCP as a PAL DV file with 4 audio t

I need to output a PAL HDV project from FCP as a PAL DV file with 4 audio tracks - specifically one stereo pair to be t1&t3, the other stereo pair to be t2&t4. This is the standard way requested by an international distributor of tv programmes. I understand how to set the sequence in FCP to output 4 audio tracks - either 2 stereo pairs (1&2, + 3&4), or 4 discrete tracks. But how do I then output this as a QT file?
The manual tells me that to export multiple audio tracks, File>Export>QT Movie has it's Config pop-up menu in the Audio Settings area of the General tab of the Sequence Settings. Well, that's set for 4 discrete channels, but the QT export settings only allow for 2 mono or 1 stereo output, and that's what I get when I try it. What it says in the manual just doesn't happen.
Exporting via Compressor, on the other hand, has an abundance of choices of 4-track outputs, none of which are labelled as anything resembling 'discrete'. Would any of those 4.0 settings suffice? Or am I likely to get myself into difficulties further down the line? As I am monitoring for this task on a 2-track audio system, I cannot confirm exactly what I am getting when I use any of those settings.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    John

Call me naive, but I've not heard of splitting the stereo pairs like this before.
What broadcaster? (perhaps one of our EU regulars will drop in...)
You can do all sorts of pairing but it is coincident tracks pairing- eg 1/2 + 3/4
    Sorry I can't offer anything.

  • Best choice for setting in FCP

    Hi there,
I am using for a couple of month a Sony HXR-NX5U NXCAM Professional Camcorder, and I recently encountered two problems :
    1)
I noticed that sometimes, when I import sequences in FCP projects, the image is distorted.
I guess I must have chosen the wrong setting when I create my projects...
I am shooting 1980x1080 it is a NTSC camcorder
    2)
after compressing with compressor, I wanted to send the m2v file to a DVDSP NTSC project and I got a message saying that my sequence could not be imported in the NTSC project because it was encoded as PAL !!!! I do not remember selecting PAL as my cam is NTSC !
    My questions are
    - what is the best setting to use when I create new FCP projects
    - what did I do wrong when I compressed . I thought that it would be automatically NTSC . Should I choose NTSC somewhere ? the only NTSC choice that I saw was not the right format ...
    Many thanks in advance
    Ivan

Your camera shoots a great variety of different formats, HD and SD. The settings you use in FCP are determined by the exact specifications that you shot. What you shoot determines what you set in FCP, what you set for ingest, and then what you set for your sequence. Ideally they all should match.
If you shoot 1920x1080i 29.97fps you set
    Format: HD
    Rate: 29.97
These two limit the list of items that appear in Use. That's their only purpose.
Here's the thing. The Use popup sets the format for capture, so the only presets that appear there are for capturing from tape. You're not capturing from tape. There is no capture preset that applies to your media. It doesn't matter what you select there, it's going to be wrong for your media. Basically you set what you want here and change it inside FCP.
You're going to use log and transfer. In that window in the gear popup you access the preferences for L&T. You set the format you want to convert to.
In sequence settings you set what sequence settings match the format you transcoded your AVCHD media to.
I strongly urge you to read thoroughly the section in the manual on using log and transfer. We can't teach you how to use the application in forum messages.

  • Converting PAL to NTSC in FCP

How do I convert PAL to NTSC in FCP?

    Hi
May be my Amateuristic way can be of help ?
PAL to NTSC or NTSC to PAL
    A. Copying commercial DVDs - No Not possibly at all - Not even legal to discuss.
    B. Home made DVDs (DVDs without copy protection)
    C. Movies from iMovie or FinalCut
    • Save as full quality QuickTime .mov and convert this with JES_Deinterlacer  (free on internet)
    NTSC ---> PAL.
    • Most often not necessary - Most stand alone PAL DVD-players playback NTSC
(if TV is old in BL/W)
    PAL ---> NTSC.
    • If played on Mac - not necessary AT ALL
    • If on NTSC DVD-player - CONVERSION IS NEEDED - nearly no Stand alone NTSC-DVD-players
    playback PAL at all.
To do this You need to convert the PAL DVD to streaming.DV or full quality QuickTime .mov
    • I use Roxio Toast™ to do this (There are no free converter)
    • JES_Deinterlacer  (free on internet) to convert to NTSC
    • Set up an NTSC project (29.97fps or 30) in iDVD and import then burn
    I burn to
    • Verbatim DVD-R
    • Set down burn speed in iDVD to x1 or x4 recommended by many
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on internal boot hard disk before burning (IMPORTANT)
PAL is 25 fps and an analog TV standard of 625 lines
NTSC is 29.97 fps and 520 lines
NTSC (29.97fps) 520 lines - about 640x480 pixels (square) 720x480 rectangular (narrow) pixels
PAL  (25 fps)   625   lines - about 768x576 pixels (square) 720x576 rectangular (narrow) pixels
to use a photo 702x480 resp 576 then add 9 pixels on each side to add together as 720
If iDVD hangs on PAL or NTSC.
    Bengt W wrote
Deleting iDVD pref. file - should return You into NTSC mode.
Yes iDVD can switch to PAL - BUT as You see with a rather lousy result.
    a. Need to convert to PAL - most often not - Most PAL-player can playback NTSC
and on a fairly new TV in color. (old TV in Bl/W)
(Other way around - from PAL to NTSC most often a must - few NTSC-player can use PAL)
    b. IF MUST - then use JES_Deinterlacer to do this conversion - so much better and free.
My list on this (or rather PAL --> NTSC - just think the other way around)
I have to send it overseas
That too can be a problem. As USA = NTSC = 29.97fps and EU = PAL = 25fps.
DO Not let iMovie or iDVD do this conversion from one to the other - Result will be Very
    BAD
I save the movie as a full quality QuickTime .mov file then I use JES_Deinterlacer to do the conversion - then I cont. in iMovie or iDVD with project set accordingly.
JES_Deinterlacer is free on Internet and there are Pro applications but not that much better and costs are astronomical.
    PAL-DVDs - don't play in US
NTSC-DVDs - usually plays well in EU
All plays well on a Mac - What ever.

Thank you SDMacuser. I dumped all the plist icons with no result, and was getting pretty plist off when it occurred to me to delete all the previous dvd.proj files. Bingo. That did the trick. So thank you for all your help and the additional information you provided.

  • Setting my FCP options to edit widescreen footage

Hi, I'm about to edit a big project that was shot in 16:9. I'd rather not learn the hard way if there are some settings I need to set before I capture & begin my edit. Is there anything I need to do in FCP or is it all in the post production?
    Thanks, Dave

    Dave
If you shot this in 16:9 mode using a VX2000 then all you need to look out for is the "anamorphic" flag ie making sure that your sequences and clips have the anamorphic flag set correctly
go to your Final Cut Pro > Easy Setup menu and choose DV NTSC Anamorphic
(if you're working in PAL land then you should of course use "DV PAL Anamorphic")
Then go to File > New Project and you're on your way
    Cheers

  • I have Video camera movies that are HD format.. I am doing editing work on them using Final Cut Pro, but using DV PAL format for the projects I am editing. When I then tried to copy my work done in FCP Project that's originally DV PAL , into a new FCP Pro

I have Video camera movies that are HD format.. I am doing editing work on them using Final Cut Pro, but using DV PAL format for the projects I am editing. When I then tried to copy my work done in FCP Project that's originally DV PAL , into a new FCP Project that is HD, and tried reconnect media with original HD movies (video), the sequence project got distorted for all the text, shapes used and all.. everything changed its orientation and scale.. Is there a way by which I can preserve my work done on DV PAL and switch it preserving its proportions, scale and orientation, but on a HD project sequence?? Appreciate your help and advice..

Yes.  A couple of ways that might work.
    First Way
What you need to do is load one of your hd clips in the viewer and edit into a new HD sequence.  Does it display correctionly?
OK, select the clip in the hd timeline and copy (command-c).  Now go to the HD sequence with the material that's distorted.  Select all (command-a) and paste attributes (option-v) and choose basic motion and distort.  That should maek things work.  What won't work is anything that you've adjusted as far as basic motion or distort in your PAL sequence.  That I'm pretty sure you'll have to redo.
    Second Way.
Choose your original PAL sequence and do a Media Manage changing the sequence preset to the appropriate HD paramenters with the media offline.  You then should be able to reconnect these clips with your original HD media.

  • Help Setting Up FCP HD Workflow

OK, so I may be a little late to the party, but I've started making new projects in HD. Just looking for some advice or pointers to keep the editing a fast as possible and on the export settings.
I make many text/motion graphics heavy TV spots. For reasons of non-FCP users being able to help in production, many of the "cards" are done in Photoshop at 1920x1080 and exported as PNG, TGA or whatever I need and animated. Works out great. These spots are exported as h.264 at a high bitrate and they look great--on my screen. Most stations as for this format without any slate so it can be injested and put on air quickly. I never get to see these things on air since most are scattered around the country. Just wanted to make sure I'm doing it right on my end.
The other area I need advice on is using footage shot in HD. Two formats in particular -- HVX200 which comes in at 1280x1080 and Canon 5D Mark II.
The HVX200 is in DVCPro HD codex at 1280x1080. I know there's a easy setup, but was wondering if there's any difference working in 1280x1080 setting or choosing the full size 1920x1080 HDTV option? I mean you end up with the same pixels in the end.
From what I've read, it's best to convert the 5D footage to ProRes before editing.
In either case, I just want to make sure I get the most out of my 8-core invenstment so I can edit as fast as possible.
    Thanks for your time.

For mixing DVCPRO HD and ProRes converted 5D files...use a ProRes sequence.  You won't have to render the DVCPRO HD until the final, and it is better to go full raster than the ultra thin raster DVCPRO HD.
As for delivering what the stations will take it...all you can do is make what they ask for, and make sure it looks good before you give it to them.  What they do to it to make it airable is out of your control.  Just look at what you export, make sure it looks good, and if so...ship it.  That's the best you can do.

  • Buttons set in FCP do not appear in compressor preview

I would have expected that markers set in FCP would be seen and useful as chaprter marlkers in compressor.
Is there some reason they do not appear, which is my case?
    Thanks
    Barry

    Barry,
As you may know, Apple has only give token support for Blu-Ray over the years. The Share to Blu-Ray option is important to some people, but it is in no way a full-fledged authoring solution of the type you're looking for.It will give you rudimentary menu and chapter options and is really designed for single files.
If you don't want to try some PC solutions, two Blu-Ray alternatives come to mind: 1) Toast Titanium and 2) Adobe Encore. Encore is a popular choice, but the catch is that it's only availabe by purchasing Premiere Production Suite (which I belive costs $1,600). Toast, while more limited in capabilities, is around $100.
    Good luck.
    Russ

  • Portrait (9:16) format screen setting in FCP

    Please help!
I am creating the content for Digital Signage. Is there a way to work native 1080 X 1920 (portrait format) in Final Cut. I can not find settings Rotate clockwise 90 deg. for the entire project. Final output must be 1080 X 1920 QT.
    Thank You.

You can't rotate your TV set in FCP. You have to create a custom sequence preset that's 1080x1920.

  • What is appropriate PAL capture setting?

I'm attempting to capture 4:9 video from my Canon 530i. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
FCE 3.5.1 hangs occasionally and I go through the delete preferences process (I have kept a copy on the MacBook), I can do it now without referring to the web page.
The easy setup dialogue box has a note: changes made to capture settings will not apply to current sequence, only to new ones. So if you get a hang and have to delete the preferences, you also have to ensure you pick the right system settings on the reboot of FCE.
I thought I had it right on my last attempt, it started to communicate with the camera and then it stopped/hung (spinning wheel of death reigns supreme).
There are 7 DV-PAL settings, I record at 16bits 48kHz so that narrows it to DV-PAL or DV-PAL Firewire Basic or DV-PAL Converter. I'm assuming the Anamorphic options are to exotic for my brain to absorb at this point in time.
Related to this (I think) is that when I have my 500GB hard disk connected (800MB interface) . Its all a bit random and adhoc for my taste. I connect the camera to my Windows desktop fire up Nero and it takes in the video without a hassle, it even comes up advising the camera make and model. It seems the little things are what lets FCE down, like easily capturing video from a camera.
Any help comments advice guidance most welcome!
    Regards, Wayne

4:9 is our TV video standard, 16:9 is cinema. I tend to show to people on their TV so I leave resolution at 4:9.
FCE started working last night and now it won't capture or recognise the camera. It would be nice if FCE could provide an error code/message other than stating the obvious 'No video signal'. I've done the delete config trick and will give it another attempt shortly.

  • DVD capturing - What setting on Easy Setup?

    Hello,
I'm caputuring video from my DVD player which is : connected RCA to a Canopus converter box : out firewire and into the Macbook.
When I capture the video, I get the message saying "Audio/Video rate may not match sample..." after I'm finished capturing.
I have no idea which setting in Easy Setup to choose from.
It is currently set at: DV - NTSC 32 kHz
    Any suggestions?

If you are capturing via a box like the Canopus ADVC-110 (any model, actually), you should use the DV NTSC DV Converter easy setup. (Assuming you're in the US, that is.) Select this easy setup BEFORE you create a new sequence and/or try to capture anything from the Canopus. Also make sure that the Canopus box itself is set for NTSC, not PAL.
You should NOT use the DV NTSC 32KHz easy setup.

  • Shot in 60i on a DVX100B, FCP easy setup?

Hi, I have been using a Panasonic DVX100B (NTSC) in 24PA mode and capturing/editing in FCP, I'm very happy, not too much trouble.
now I have tried to shoot in 60i mode (scene 1), I cannot find an easy setup preset....
1: What's the best capture setting for this?
2: Should I set my sequence to the same as Q1?
3: This footage will be going to my website as either a QT movie or Flash so am I doing the correct thing shooting in 60i?
4: If I do eventually send this to DVD is it still wise to use 60i?
I have tried to duplicate a preset and choose a frame rate of 60, but I'm not 100% this is correct because as soon as I try to log and capture it says it dropped frames, it won't even capture anything.
This will probably be the first of many posts as I'm trying to take in as much info as possible, but it's not sticking... LOL
    Thanks
    C.

    DV/NTSC 29.97. 60i just means 60 interlaced fields...which works out to 30 frames...and all DV runs at 29.97...so...
DV/NTSC 29.97. No advanced pulldown...just the basic setting.
