"No medium found" trying to overwrite USB media ... [solved]

Following the guidelines in the Wiki 'USB Installation Media', I tried to transfer the latest archlinux iso to a USB drive to function as a rescue disk:
sudo dd bs=4M if=archlinux-2012.11.01-dual.iso of=/dev/sdc
But when I enter this command, I get the following error message:
dd: opening ‘/dev/sdc’: No medium found
The Gnome Disks-utility shows that the USB drive is indeed located at /dev/sdc. It is not mounted.
I have tried this with two different USB drives. What am I doing wrong here?

I ran into this yesterday. I think that nautilus uses 'eject' or some other magic that messes with your device file.

  • SD to USB adapter: No medium found

    Hi,
    i have a new micro-SD to USB adapter but i doesn't work properly.
    Output of dmesg when i insert the USB adapter:
    $ dmesg
    scsi 7:0:0:0: Direct-Access Generic STORAGE DEVICE 0272 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0
    sd 7:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk
    In /dev there is just sdb and no partitions although the micro-SD card has already a partition (just one). If i use the micro-SD card in the SD card slot this works properly:
    $ dmesg
    mmc0: new SDHC card at address 1234
    mmcblk0: mmc0:1234 SA16G 14.6 GiB
    mmcblk0: p1
    So there must be a problem with the USB adapter.
    Here just a few more information:
    $ lsusb
    Bus 002 Device 008: ID 05e3:0736 Genesys Logic, Inc. microSD Reader/Writer
    $ fdisk /dev/sdb
    fdisk: cannot open /dev/sdb: No medium found
    But there is a medium and this medium already has a partition.
    I already searched for the "No medium found" error but i could not find a solution. Does anybody has an idea of what is going wrong?
    Best Regards
    Werzi2001

    I had very similar or even the same problem some time ago.
    Have you recompiled the kernel on your own?
    If yes - maybe you forgot to select following option: CONFIG_SCSI_MULTI_LUN?
    In my case without this option kernel allocated only one device in /dev/ (sdb, or so on), but with this option the kernel registers 4 block devices: sdb, sdc, sdd and sde. The connected micro-SD card will be accessible in one of those devices.
    If this is a standard kernel from Arch distribution you may check it with:
    zcat /proc/config.gz | grep CONFIG_SCSI_MULTI_LUN

    well this morning i tried a different cd then cd's. now i was trying 2 random, apparently non damaged cd's last night and they did not work. the one i try this morning works!
    however the 2 that didnt work on my arch last night will play on a different computer of ubuntu flavor.
    2 things here: i cant believe i randomly grabbed 2 audio cd's last night that didnt work...out of 100's that apparently do. i cant  believe one linux OS works and the other does not with those 2. so thanks for help, still kinda confused though.

  • Error trying to open source media - Compressor 1.2.1

    I have a problem with a movie that have been sent to me. I seem unable to add it to a batch in Compressor or in Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD for the that matter.I'm using QuickTime 7.0.3 adn Mac OS X 10.4.3
    When ever I had it to Compressor I get this error:
    "Alert: Error trying to open source media file"
    http://www.saruken.com/temp/Compressor-Error.jpg
    And when I import it into Final Cut I get this error:
    "File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown."
    http://www.saruken.com/temp/FCP-error.jpg
    The settings for the offending movie are:
    Format: H.264, 640x480, Millions, AAC, Stereo (L R), 22.050kHz
    FPS: 29.97
    Data Rate: 90 kbytes/sec
    Key Frame: Every 300 Frames
    The only difference between my test, which works fine, and this file is the frame rate (mine is at 25fps) and the number of audio channels (my test was in mono).
    The file I was sent was encoded in Compressor, not sure which one - but I think it might be version 2.
    The strange thing is it opens in QuickTime fine. I've tried exporting from QuickTime Pro as another h.264 with mono sound with no joy. I've tried saving a reference of the movie to see if that works, again no joy.
    The only way I can get Compressor to accept the file is by transcoding it to another codec, like Soreson 3. Then FCP and Compressor are happy.
    What I can't work out is why the h.264 file I made is fine (and any file I still make as well), and the one I was sent is not. I'm also having the same problem with an h.264 file I downloaded from Apple QuickTime Trailers, and an another I found on the web.
    Updates that have been done recently incase they might have caused the problem are 10.4.3 and installing Motion 2 Trail (since removed), which wanted to update Pro Application Support (this might be the problem?).
    Any help greatly apprieated
    Hami

    I just tried the offending movie file on my Powerbook, it has never seen Motion 2 or those Pro Application Support updates - and it gets the same error.
    Very odd indeed - any ideas?
    thanks in advance

    Probably because the recovery program doesn't support USB connected devices.

  • Trying to use USB nintendo controllers

    This is all a lot to read, so I appreciate your time.
    I recently bought a pair of NES controllers (they are like joysticks) that were modified to connect to computers through USB. Connecting the controllers to my Windows XP computer and looking at the properties reveals that the controllers are HID compliant. They worked on Windows XP with the old nintendo emulator I have, but they do not work with my Macbook. When I connect the controllers to the USB ports, my Macbook shows no recognition, except for a brief (about a minute long) loss of smoothness on my mouse (actually my trackpad). Regardless of what I do, I cannot get the controllers to work with anything I use.
    During the hours spent trying to solve the problem, I tried all the recommended programs for my case (USB Overdrive, GamePadCompanion, etc.). I have even found a post in another forum with my exact problem (though there was no solution their either):
    http://forums.emulator-zone.com/showthread.php?t=8265
    I then found a program called USB Prober, which revealed three log messages associated with the controllers:
    1.637 [1] [0x3877300] The IOUSBFamily is having trouble enumerating a USB device that has been plugged in. It will keep retrying. (Port 1 of hub @ location: 0x1d000000)
    5.190 [1] [0x3877300] The IOUSBFamily was not able to enumerate a device.
    3.517 [1] AppleUSBUHCI[0x369c000]::UIMCheckForTimeouts Too many loops around
    The first two always happen in succession after I connect a controller, and appear to be a failure of the computer to recognize the controllers. The third message happens after the controller is connected for a while, and keeps repeating itself even after the controller is disconnected.
    I plan to use the controllers with Nestopia and Emulator Enhancer (a nintendo emulator, and a Nestopia add-on that is supposed to add joystick compatibility).
    If anyone has advice, please let me know.
    Relevant questions to answer would be:
    Am I doing anything wrong?
    Is my case impossible to solve?
    Do macs (specifically my Macbook) have support for all HID compliant devices?
    Is it possible that all the programs I have installed (USB Overdrive, Emulator Enhancer, GamePagCompanion, etc.) are somehow clashing to make my controllers undetectable?
    Do you know of a driver that can solve my problem?
    Thanks for the help!

    Anyone?

    Yes, sadly that is what the above was referencing.
    On a fresh note, while using process monitor we were able to see that it seems to fail on finding some odd registry
    entries from the host machine.  When those entries are added (not even sure why it needs them from the host machine) the build still fails.

  • PKGBUILD aborts with /usb/media/stv680..internal compiler er

    Tried twice.

    mpie;
    The observation is correct.  vmlinuz code allows the boot of the CD's kernel.  The fact that such code is useable is not covered in the details provided in the archCD.
    As reported in previous posts attempting to use vmlinuz, there is no internet access after the boot to arch log-in.  All attempts to start the internet fail because the modules have not been loaded (numerous displays of errors during boot-up).
    At any rate, the custom kernel generated through ABS after many trials does not produce a boot-up to desktop but just to log-in on vc1 which is unuseable because the keyboard cannot enter single keystrokes..repeats .  This action occurred after...pacman -Syu as well when trying to upgrade to kernel 2.6.12.2.
    Code is king in performing the upgrades or making changes.
    When using ABS to generate a custom kernel in LOCAL VERSION="-custom", it seems that the pkgrel number is important code..."unique" is the word used in the wiki.  Any number greater than the latest pkgrel number would be "unique".  I suspect that the number to be entered "has to be one greater than the latest pkgrel" and is not a "unique" number.
    The custom kernel has the correct config change as desired included in the kernel loaded.
    I am not able to utilize kernel2.6.12.2 after many fruitless hours in changing one config line in the kernel config.
    I am unable to download via pacman -Syu and get a useable kernel.  The keyboard malfunctions.
    I have no other ideas for the upgrade.  Custom kernel gave the same result thru ABS.
    Frustration rules!

  • Old extreme n, and usb media card reader

    hey, i am trying to hook up an iogear usb media card reader, a usb memory stick, and a portable 2.5" hdd to the belkin mac mini usb hub, and the hub to the old airport extreme n base station.
    the usb stick and the hard drive are recognized without any problems.
    the media card reader shows up in the disks tab of the airport utility, but it doesn't show something is connected to the card reader when a card is added. it just keeps showing 0MB in all four slots.
    usb hub is powered, card reader is not.
    when i connect the reader to the AEBS directly i get the same result, so i don't think the hub is the problem, since it runs other two devices flawlessly.
    usb card reader works fine when connected directly to any computer as well.
    any ideas? is it not possible to connect a card reader to the base station?

    Unfortunately not.
    The only devices that work are printers, disk drives and hubs.

    Anyone with any ideas?
    This seems to happen to all the packages installed from the usb media

    The boot order is already set to boot from HD first
    Running a normal PXE OSD build using the same task sequence works.. i only have issues when i used use a standalone media of the task sequence (i've tried both USB and DVD)
    For some reason once the Win7 image is applied, the next step in the task sequence is to install applications..
    The first application installation task eventually fails with 1612 error, unknown media..

  • Mkinitcpio to build Initial RAM Disk: error: /dev/sr0: No medium found

    Prior to using mkinitcpio-busybox 1.15.3-5, building an Initial RAM Disk for my custom kernel resulted in no error messages.
    Using mkinitcpio-busybox 1.15.3-5, I ran and got:
    [root@Galicja linux-2.6.33.1]# mkinitcpio -k 2.6.33.1-ARCHMOD -g /boot/kernel26-2.6.33.1-ARCHMOD.img
    :: Begin build
    :: Parsing hook [base]
    :: Parsing hook [udev]
    :: Parsing hook [autodetect]
    error: /dev/sr0: No medium found
    :: Parsing hook [pata]
    :: Parsing hook [scsi]
    :: Parsing hook [sata]
    :: Parsing hook [filesystems]
    :: Generating module dependencies
    :: Generating image '/boot/kernel26-2.6.33.1-ARCHMOD.img'...SUCCESS
    However, using this Initial RAM Disk in menu.lst for booting into my new kernel worked fine (as before when I wasn't using mkinitcpio-busybox) without any crashes, panics, or errors.
    Should the message "error: /dev/sr0: No medium found" refer to a 'warning' instead of an error? What can I do to avoid this message (adjust any hooks or modules in mkinitcpio.conf)?
    Note: /dev/sr0 refers to my Optical Block Device (CdRom).
    Here are the contents of my mkinitcpio.conf file:
    # vim:set ft=sh
    # MODULES
    # The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
    # run.  Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
    # in this array.  For instance:
    #     MODULES="piix ide_disk reiserfs"
    MODULES=""
    # BINARIES
    # This setting includes, into the CPIO image, and additional
    # binaries a given user may wish.  This is run first, so may
    # be used to override the actual binaries used in a given hook.
    # (Existing files are NOT overwritten is already added)
    # BINARIES are dependancy parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries
    BINARIES=""
    # FILES
    # This setting is similar to BINARIES above, however, files are added
    # as-is and are not parsed in anyway.  This is useful for config files.
    # Some users may wish to include modprobe.conf for custom module options,
    # like so:
    #    FILES="/etc/modprobe.conf"
    FILES=""
    # HOOKS
    # This is the most important setting in this file.  The HOOKS control the
    # modules and scripts added to the image, and what happens at boot time.
    # Order is important, and it is recommended that you do not change the
    # order in which HOOKS are added.  Run 'mkinitcpio -H <hook name>' for
    # help on a given hook.
    # 'base' is _required_ unless you know precisely what you are doing.
    # 'udev' is _required_ in order to automatically load modules
    # 'filesystems' is _required_ unless you specify your fs modules in MODULES
    # Examples:
    #    This setup specifies all modules in the MODULES setting above.
    #    No raid, lvm2, or encrypted root is needed.
    #    HOOKS="base"
    #    This setup will autodetect all modules for your system and should
    #    work as a sane default
    #    HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata filesystems"
    #    This is identical to the above, except the old ide subsystem is
    #    used for IDE devices instead of the new pata subsystem.
    #    HOOKS="base udev autodetect ide scsi sata filesystems"
    #    This setup will generate a 'full' image which supports most systems.
    #    No autodetection is done.
    #    HOOKS="base udev pata scsi sata usb filesystems"
    #    This setup assembles an pata raid array with an encrypted root FS.
    #    Note: See 'mkinitcpio -H raid' for more information on raid devices.
    #    HOOKS="base udev pata raid encrypt filesystems"
    #    This setup loads an lvm2 volume group on a usb device.
    #    HOOKS="base udev usb lvm2 filesystems"
    HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata filesystems"
    # COMPRESSION
    # Use this to compress the initramfs image. With kernels earlier than
    # 2.6.30, only gzip is supported, which is also the default. Newer kernels
    # support gzip, bzip2 and lzma.
    #COMPRESSION="gzip"
    #COMPRESSION="bzip2"
    #COMPRESSION="lzma"

    Got the exact same error here. Did not get it before said changes to mkinitcpio (busybox).
    However, there are some things I did not quite understand:
    djgera: "(don't worry, is not an issue)"
    By that you mean that it is not a bug or that it is not going to give the system any troubles?
    .:B:. :"I don't see how the error message is 'misleading'? Do you mean you do have an optical drive while the script doesn't seem to pick it up?"
    Do you mean that if I have an optical drive then I should not be getting this error? 'Cause I've got one and the error always appears to me. Or should I be getting the error output even though I have an optical device? If that is so, then in that sense I think said error message is potentially misleading for if it is an initrd-related error, then something is not going to work well on my Initial Ram Disk. I mean, by errors I understand that certain things will not be working well or mainly not working at all. If that is not the case, then I don't see why the output is given as an error. Thanks for the attention.

  • "Error loading media. File Could not be played"  when trying to view streaming media on only some sites.  How to fix?

    Hi!
    I've been having a problem trying to view streaming media, but it only happens on some sites.  It's similar to a problem I have on my Windows PC, that's related to Adobe Flash, but since I'm very new to using my iPad Mini, I don't even know if Apple devices have Flash...do they?
    Anyway, when I go to a site that's plagued by this issue, I tap the 'Play' arrow on my screen & the circle spins like it's gonna play, but then the screen turns black & this error message appears:
                                                  "Error loading media. File Could not be played"  followed by a triangle with an exclamation point !
    I read several articles online & the solutions ran from updating firmware in their router, (mine is brand new...installed last Thursday), to disabling ad-block programs in their browsers...(I don't have any enabled), and the last one was making changes to the DNS...(I know it means 'domain name server', but I don't have the foggiest idea how to make changes to it!
    Anyway, that's my problem.  I hope that someone out there knows what I can do to fix it!
    Thanks in advance for your help.

    I would assume an issue with the HTML5 media player.
    If those aren't working on Windows then it is possible that the proper codecs aren't installed.
    You can try to disable the HTML5 media player and make Firefox use the Flash plugin.
    You can do this by setting these two prefs to false on the <b>about:config</b> page:
    *media.windows-media-foundation.enabled
    *media.directshow.enabled

        Hi Valeria07,
    We want managing your media to be easy! It saddens me to hear that this is not occuring. Do you receive a specific error message when the browser times out? Have you tried using a different browser?
