No network connection as user in guest Arch

I couldn't stay without Arch, so I installed Arch as a guest in Virtual box on a Windows XP host (work machine). Everything went well with the installation.
However once the installation was complete, I couldn't connect to the network. I knew this would be a problem because I am behind a proxy at work. I added the appropriate http_proxy and ftp_proxy environment variables and I could now connect and update my system.
My only problem is that this works only for root. As user, I cannot use pacman to install anything.
[inxs@archbox ~]$ sudo pacman -S i3-wm
resolving dependencies....
and it just sits there until it gets a Connection timed out error.
However, if I su to root then
[inxs@archbox ~]$su
Password:
[root@archbox inxs]$ pacman -S i3-wm
works and I can install anything from the repos.
Even a simple wget command gives me this :
wget http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/biosdisk-git/biosdisk-git/PKGBUILD

Retrying.
What should I do to make my user also be able to download and install packages?

it now allows me to use pacman to get the packages from the official repos. But I still cannot use any aur helper to get packages from the Official Repositories. This is what I mean :
[inxs@archbox ~]$ aurin wmfs-git

Now I can install the dependencies manually using the pacman command directly and then re-trying to install wmfs-git and it will work, but how come it works when I issue a direct pacman command but does not through aurget?
Any pointers?
EDIT: Spoke too soon. installing wmfs-git just doesn't work. I am assuming this is because git tries to make a connection again to the git repo and it doesn't read the http_proxy variables
Is there any way I can install things. How do I make git or svn to see my environment variables?? Would they use libproxy??
I am going to try that out and see.

  • 2.1.5 Guest Network Connectivity

Has anyone see guest network connectivity issues on Oracle VM 2.1.5 Server? This seems to happen occasionally on many of our boxes - seems to be guests that have been up over 100 days. We found two fixes to restore network connectivity -
    1. Reboot guest
    2. Save/Restore Guest.
There is no traffic on the guest however the HV seems fine. Other guests on the same hypervisor seem fine as well. Just completely random. Guest OS doesn't seem to be the problem since we've had different OS with the same problem. It seems like the bridge just fails. We are using bonding and vlans on the HV. No error messages in any logs. The Link Detected: yes is still on in the failed guest - no packets can pass and on the physical switch port the MAC for the Guest is gone.
Has anyone else seen this? We haven't seen this in 2.2 yet but we haven't had too many guests up on 2.2 for that long. We've had two guests this week drop off the network.
I've opened a SR on metalink as well.

First I want to make sure I understand what you are trying to do. You have, for lack of a better word, "trusted" clients on the AEBS on the main wireless network and "untrusted" clients on the AEBS's Guest network.
You want to be able to access the untrusted clients, from the trusted. And you checked the "Allow guests network clients to communicate....." box.
If you check out the help in the AU for that box it says:
"If you want to allow guest computers to communicate with each other, make sure sharing services are set up on the client computers. Select the wireless device in AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup. Click AirPort in the toolbar, click Guest Network, and then select “Allow guest network clients to communicate with each other.”
I would take this check box to mean that intercommunication between clients connecting on the guest network is possible. Not to make a "firewall" like rule saying clients on the trusted side can talk to clients on the untrusted side.
I wonder if the previous version of firmware had the bug (that allowed the communication) was correct in 7.5.2?
Maybe a call to AppleCare is warranted to find out?
Also, if you feel this is an actual bug, then you can also sign up on ADC (its free) and file a bug.

  • No network connection or virtualbox guest additions after upgrade

I followed the instructions carefully, from the homepage, when carrying out the latest upgrade. Unfortunately, virtualbox guest additions is no longer working and nor can I get a network connection. To clarify, arch is running inside a virtual machine.
I'm not sure where to start looking to be honest and would appreciate some pointers about to get me on the way towards solving this problem.
EDIT: The virtualbox problem is related to error in the package
    Thanks

for the guest additions, it's a bug in the package, look here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=164924
For the network, you'll have to tell us how you were setting up the network before that isn't working now.

  • Install guest OS Solaris 10 no network connection

    Hi,
I tried to install Solaris 10 as guest OS on Oracle VM. During the installation of OS, it bypass the step prompt for network connectivity (yes/no) screen. (I tried many time install and re-install over and over again, but the network connectivity prompt screen never show up.)
I finished the installation anyway, the OS seem working fine. But the problem is I don't know where to enter the network info, and therefore, no network connection.
    So, please help.
    Thank you,
    Wei

Windows uses the primary partiton for boot, too, even if you installed it on the NTFS volume in the extended partition. Wherever you install Windows, it will need the primary partition for booting. You can never boot from Windows extended partitions
As for the 15Gb raw partition, it look like what you call 'RAW partition' is actually just a small little part inside the extended partition. All your NTFS partitions (and your RAW partiton) are logical volumes and they all reside inside the extended partition. Even though Windows sees them as separate drives, each with its own drive letter, just as it sees the primary partition.
You may try do use Windows fdisk or diskpart to delete the last logical volume in the extended partition, and then get the ntfs resize tool from Linux, or the CD1 from the Debian Linux install CDs, which has it included and accessible with a nice user interface, and resize your extended partition.
I don't know if it works, I only used it to also resize some logical volume inside the partition. ntfs resize tool might not be easy to work with, you will need to read its documentation, but it does resize NTFS partitions (I have seen it).
If it works, then you will have your 15Gb as unallocated space available for a new partition. Let the Solaris installer create this new partition automatically during install.

  • User gets "This network connection does not exist" when she tries to log on to Terminal Server (2008 R2)

User gets "This network connection does not exist" when she tryes to log on to Terminal Server (2008 R2)
I got more than 100 users. Shes the only one getting is. We tried four computers (All Windows 7 Pro)
Nothing useful in event viewer to mention.

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Does that user able to login previously?
From your comment, it seems that there is some permission issue with that user. As you have checked that user with different system also. Please check that user is added under “Remote Desktop User” local group and also allowed “Allow log on through
Remote Desktop service” permission under group policy. Also please check that when user tries to login it uses “Domainname\Username” format.
In addition for a try, also check by disabling firewall on one particular system.
To add users and groups to the Remote Desktop Users group by using Local Users and Groups snap-in:
    1.  Click Start > Administrative Tools, Open Computer Management.
    2.  In the console tree, click the Local Users and Groups node.
    3.  In the details pane, double-click the Groups folder.
    4.  Double-click Remote Desktop Users, and then click
    Add.
    5.  In the Select Users dialog box, click Locations to specify the search location.
    6.  Click Object Types to specify the types of objects you want to search for.
    7.  Type the name you want to add in the Enter the object names to select (examples) box.
    8.  Click Check Names.
When the name is located, click OK.

  • Error message "network connection reset" only affects one user

I'm running 10.3.9 on a 400Mhz iMac. I have 3 users, myself and my 2 kids. When I try to access a web page using Safari on one of the kid's user accounts I get an error message saying that the server cannot be contacted because the "network connection has been reset", and says to try again later but never works. The odd part is that the other two user accounts can access web pages with no problem.
I have checked my network settings, all user settings/limitations, restarted the computer and modem, tossed all cache and bookmarks for the affected user and placed the com.safari.plist from the user/library/safari folder on the desktop. Still get the same error message.
I would create a new user name but had a hassle with file permissions when I put the old user files in the new user folder.

I see you have Windows Firewall turned on. Do you happen to have any other firewalls or anti-virus in conjunction with this? Sometimes having both turned on will cause issue. Try disabling all of your anti-virus and firewall software and trying again.

  • Solution for Windows 7 can not connect to Time Capsule Guest network

Problem: Sony Vaio running Windows 7 (64bit) will not connect to my Time Capsule Guest network
For added security, I set up a guest network at home. My friend brought over a Vaio and was unable to get an internet connection via my Guest network. The Vaio connected to the Time Capsule with no problem, with full bars, but was not able to get on the internet.
After way too many hours going through useless online suggestions and even calling Apple tech support to see if there might be a known compatibility issue (where I was told they had no idea and I should call Mr Softy) I discovered that the Vaio had somehow set itself to use the DNS Server address of the Time Capsule, main network, not the guest network. (ie Main network uses 10.1...., Guest uses 172.1....) so once I set the Vaio to Obtain DNS server address automatically it fixed the problem and connected to the internet via the Guest network.
    Detailed solution:
Configure Time Capsule Guest as follows:
Network Name: fill in the blank
Allow Guest Network to communicate: left unchecked
    Guest Network Security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
    Password: fill in the blank
    Configure Vaio:
Set up new connection from the Network and Sharing center using the name given to Guest network
(for password chose WPA2-Personal>AES>then your Guest Password)
Select Manage wireless networks from left column in main Network and Sharing center window
    Select Adapter Properties
Click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) to highlight it, and Select Properties
Make sure both Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are selected then OK & go back to Network and Sharing center
    Connection is active.
Hope this helps those condemned to playing system admin for their windows brethren

    Great post!
Here are a couple of more methods to add to your bag of tricks:
Method #1: Use Win7's built-in diagnostics to remedy network maladies
    • Start > Start Search > type in: ncpa.cpl <Enter>
    • Select current active connection.
    • Click Diagnose this connection
    • Select Reset the network adapter
Method #2: Use the ipconfig tool to renew the DHCP-provided IP address information
    • Start, then click Run, and then, type: cmd, and then, press <enter>
    • At the prompt, enter the following commands; press <enter> after entering each one:
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew

Hi there. I have the ipad 3, and just last night had to reboot and do the upgrade, now my texting and facetime on it is not working...it states that when I click to activate it, and put in my user id(email) and passcode....that" could not sign in...please chekc network connection and try again".....well my Wifi connection is fine, and i can text and facetime fine from my iphone..just not the ipad now.....any ideas why it will not take my user id and passcode?...the passcode works fine on my iphone.

    Hello cohenj80,
Thank you for the details about the FaceTime and iMessage activation issue you are experiencing on your iPad 3.  I recommend following the steps in this article when you are not able to sign into FaceTime or iMessage on your iPad:

  • Loss of network connectivity at random times to guests and now hosts Server 2012 R2 Hyper-v on Dell R620...Guests virtual disks reside on a NAS.

We have set up 2 Hyper-v environments (Server 2012 R2 fully updated) on Dell R620's. The guest machines are configured do that they reside on a NAS (also a Dell R620 with server 2012). We are having an issue on both the environments where the guests will
lose network connectivity. The servers ran well for about 4 weeks and recently the guests started having issues and we have even had to reboot the host due to network connectivity problems.
We have 4 virtual switches set up. 1 connected to its own NIC. 1 for management and the 3 others for guests.
The 3 for guests are not configured to allow host OS sharing.
We do not have IP addresses on the NICS for the guests. Only on the management port. (all 1 GB NICS)
We have updated the firmware and drivers for the standard Broadcom Netxtreme cards.
We do not have Jumbo frames enabled because of some issues with switching compatability.
I've seen articles recommending to turn off TCP offloading and to disable virtual machine queues. Is this best practice?
Any thoughts of where I might look to help diagnose this issue?

    Hi ,
"1 connected to its own NIC. 1 for management and the 3 others for guests."
Also you mentioned that : " is only hosting these 24 VMs ".
First please try to disable the RSS in the property of the NICs for guests .
Then run powershell " Get-NetAdapterVMQ " to check the parameter "NumberOfReceiveQueues"  (NumberOfReceiveQueues – The number of queues that the NIC has available to use and assign to VMs,
the host and a default queue) .
If I understand correctly ,when you enable VMQ  the number of connected VMs on that NIC should not be more than the value of  "NumberOfReceiveQueues" -2 .
For details please refer to following link:

    Hope this helps

  • How many Samsung Stratosphere users do not have reliable network connectivity using hotspot or tethering?

I am on my 3rd phone in as little as 9 months because I have never been able to stay on the network using the hotspot or tethering. The network keeps disappearing and coing back on. I am in a 4 g area and right across the street from a main Verizon store. My antennae strength is full and my 4g indicator is on but it disappears so much that I cannot rely on network service with my phone. I actually went out and purchased a 4g aircard and that works just fine so I know its the phone and not the network. Its funny I keep getting put back into this phone when its the phone that has the problem. My salesman said after the 3rd phone you will be upgraded to the next best phone so hopefully Motorola Driod 4 will be the key top reliable network connectivity. I wish I knew how widespread this is or has been. I realize not a majority of Stratosphere users probably dont use the hotspot or tethering much but I use it or try to on a daily basis. I love the phone but not the hotspot or tethering capabilities. My newest phone never got any new apps or anything put on and it had problems outta the box.

This phone SUCKS period.  I have only had it since July 27 and it has NEVER worked well.  I was never told (of course other than small print) that I had two weeks to return and get a totally different phone if not happy. So the 15th day I found that out. They pulled my sim card it worked better for about one week. Than back to crap.  So, I did a factory reset as they told me to. It worked for about another 2 weeks maybe. Now back to the same old thing again.  Drops calls ALL THE TIME with full network strength I can here them they cannot here. Goes back to factory defaults all the time. Starts not ringing and going only into voice mail. Freezes up where you cannot even shut off, you have to take the battery out. Also, constantly loses connectivity even though it is showing 4G and all bars too.
Went in again to discuss this with them just today.  HMM, first, if you go back to comolaints this has been a main complaint of this phone for a huge percentage of customers.  Hmm, they are still selling it as a GREAT phone, that is what they said to me, ohhhh, no problems.  Today they looked it up and supposabley says Samsung as of July 30th is aware of this problem and now has 90 days to fix it.  Current fix. They SAY, pull the battery out EVERY night.  Stuck with phone will not replace with a different model. Only same model. SUCKS...Oh and Verizon rep says to me " we are only the cell service. All warranty's are through your Samsung."  Funny thing is. WHY are they still selling it on their shelf.  I feel like sending a spy into tomorrow to same store and find out if they push the phone on them...BUSTED, I am sure they will.  Meanwhile, it sure puts bumps in the road for our livelyhood if our only phone.  Not work the retail value, so not buying my own phone to replace YET.
Good luck....Hopefully your third time is the charm and you will finally get a replacement for this Piece of CRAP.

  • 2008 r2 hyper-v guest with static IP always looses network connectivity after every restart - no problem with DHCP

    Hello,
We are running 2008 R2 domain with one physical DC and other running in VM on Hyper-V host (2008 R2 Standard). The host has 4 NICs and is configured to use one physical NIC for itself (management) and the hyper-v guest is configured to use another dedicated/physical
NIC (through microsoft virtual switch) just for itself.
I noticed that after setting the hyper-v guest with a static IP address all works fine only until guest restart. When the guest boots up the IP address is still configured correctly in IPv4 properties, but there is no network connectivity at all and in fact
the guest shows running APIPA config in ipconfig /all output. That situation continues until I remove the virtual NIC from hyper-v guest, remove the virtual switch from dedicated NIC on host and then reconfigure it (using same settings as they were). very
    annoying.
For time being I switched the virtual DC (problematic hyper-v guest) to a DHCP IP and configured DHCP server (running on physical DC machine, not on hyper-v host) to store a reservation for the hyper-v guest so it always gets the same "static"
    IP configuration.
Is there some kind of a problem/bug with using static IP on (2008 R2) hyper-v guests? is there a hotfix for static IP config in hyper-v guest environment?
both 2008 R2 OSes (host and guest) are up to date with all updates (synced with Microsoft, not WSUS).

OK, I'm not at the office now, but took my time to test out the restart scenarios on problematic virtual guest remotely.
No dice, same as it was, everything works fine after guest has IP configured in DHCP mode (IP reservation of 192.168.1.5 for specific MAC address) and it doesn't work after restart in static IP mode (same address, works before restart of guest).
I also took "arp -a" outputs at each step from host server and that was always saying there is only a single host (192.168.1.5 = VDC = problematic virtual guest) assigned to that IP address and always with same MAC, so that pretty much rules out
ARP/MAC troubles and no issues with switches/routers getting spoofed. Problem is most likely with the virtual guest (WS2008R2) or within the host running same OS.
    Here are outputs:

The Network Connection #2 is the only one the host uses (not shared with hyper-v guests).
The Network Connection #4 is assigned to Microsoft Virtual Switch hence why it doesn't show up in results, like below:

On Monday I will install more test guests in Hyper-V host (WS2008R2), in variety of flavors like 7x64, 8.1x64, ws2012r2, and see if they show similar problems with static IP configuration when utilizing a dedicated NIC from host server.
Don't get me wrong, I can live with virtual DC running on DHCP IP reservation (which is based on MAC), because the virtual DC pretty much requires a physical PDC (hosting also DHCP in my network) to be present for safety reasons ... however I prefer a static
IP configuration on all servers, hence my question and surprise why it doesn't work.

  • Airport Guest Network - Connects but no internet

I'm using and Airport Extreme Base Station (A1354), software version 7.6.4. The secure networks are fine and work perfectly to serve up an internet connection.
However, the guest network (which is currently set to no password) connects just fine but no internet is provided. I've tried everything I can click on to get it to work but nada. I've rebooted, naturally, as well as removed the guest network and created new ones with new names and passwords as well as no password versions.
    Can anyone help?

The most common cause of Guest Network issues is trying to connect the AirPort Extreme to a modem/router or gateway type of device, when it needs to connect to a simple modem. A simple modem will always have only one Ethernet port.
Click on the Network tab and check the setting for Router Mode.  If it is set to "Off (Bridge Mode)" you have the AirPort connected to a modem/router or gateway type of device that is both a modem and router in the same package.
The Guest Network cannot operate correctly in the "Off (Bridge Mode)" setting......but at the same time this is the correct setting for your AirPort Extreme to work with your modem/router or gateway device.  Kind of a Catch 22.
If the Guest Network feature is important to you. ask your ISP if they can provide you with a simple modem.....not a modem/router or gateway.  Or, ask your ISP if it is possible to reconfigure the modem/router to act as a only a modem. If it is, the Guest Network feature will work correctly once the device has been setup to operate only as a modem.

  • Network Connection Properties Access Standard Users

    Hi All,
I know this is an old issue but i just cannot get it going i've read a couple of forum posts but i don't know whether i am still doing it correctly.
I am trying to allow domain users to change their network connection properties to allow change of ip addresses as it is slightly different between our 2 offices locally.
So i have added the users in to the network configuration operators group and also i have disabled the UAC as
    follows

    Hello again,
    Is NetworkOP a Security group?
Also have you checked the client's PC and verify if the following group is added in Network Operators group?
Do you see any errors in RSOP.msc when you try to see the applied policy?
Please try to logon with different users in NetworkOp group and check if they have access or not?
Do you have any other policy related to prevent access to network properties?
User configuration \ Administrative templates \ Network \ Network Connection is a case in point.
Another step is to make sure the Network Operators group itself is operational, so please create a user locally (Not Administrator) and add it to the Built in Network Operators group and see if they have access to properties.
    Regards.

  • WRT1900AC Guest Network connection time limit

I think this is a fresh topic.
I have searched for this, but can't find any prior topics.
    I upgraded from a Cisco branded E4200 (v1) to a Linksys WRT1900AC.
I have noticed that the guest network for the 1900AC kicks devices off after a period of time I have not managed to determine, despite them not being disconnected from the network. The device will simply tell me that a hotspot is detected and asks me to sign in. I have to open the browser and enter the password again. This is particularly annoying for work devices on the guest network that use VPN, as I have to get that running as well.
The E4200 I had before kept guests connected as long as they were on the network; only disconnecting them or taking them out of range for more than a day required me to supply the password again.
Is this expected behaviour? I'd prefer not to be repeatedly challenged for the guest password for devices that remain connected, just like I could with the E4200.
I use the 5GHz network for all my permanently connected devices ( a mixture of fixed and dynamic IP's) and leave guests and my work devices to the guest network on 2.4GHz (all dynamic IP's). I have things spaced out well in my home as I had run into issues with interference caused to my Sonos system, which I have eliminated by moving my 2.4GHz connected equipment. The physical layout is the same from when I had my E4200 and my 1900AC, so I'm confident it isn't a physical issue.
My 2.4GHz network has its SSID hidden to discourage people from using it.

How many total guests allowed did you set on your router? Make sure that the total number of devices connecting to the Guest network would match the total guests allowed.
