No sound in Shadowgrounds (maybe OSS related)

Hello
I got a copy of Shadowgrounds (a native GNU/Linux game).
http://www.linuxgamepublishing.com/info.php?id=41&
I had no any problem installing the game, but I don't have sound
The official FAQ of the game says:
Sound
I get no sound, and messages about (snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL hw:0
This is usually because of the new PulseAudio system that makes sound difficult to use on Linux.
To fix this problem, you need to do one of the following (in order of ease)
run the game using pasuspender
pasuspender gamename
run the game using padsp
padsp gamename
Finally if these fail, or give poor results, you need to install the OSS layer for ALSA and ensure it is loaded into the kernel. This will vary for each Linux distribution, and you should consult your Linux distribution documentation for instructions on how to do this.
Source: http://www.linuxgamepublishing.com/faq. … 1&#faq_5_1
Well I don't have the message about snd_ctl_open_noupdate, neither I have installed pulseaudio, So I guess, I must install the OSS layer for ALSA (I have installed ALSA)
Then I installed the package alsa-oss and I tried load the correspondent modules in the kernel.
I ran:
$ lsmod|grep '^snd' | column -t
snd_hda_codec_analog 52624 1
snd_seq_dummy 1071 0
snd_seq_oss 25016 0
snd_seq_midi_event 4488 1 snd_seq_oss
snd_seq 41656 5 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event
snd_seq_device 4353 3 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq
snd_pcm_oss 33474 0
snd_hda_intel 18769 7
snd_hda_codec 66623 2 snd_hda_codec_analog,snd_hda_intel
snd_hwdep 4756 1 snd_hda_codec
snd_pcm 58460 6 snd_pcm_oss,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec
snd_mixer_oss 14328 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_timer 15601 5 snd_seq,snd_pcm
snd 42602 19 snd_hda_codec_analog,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_pcm_oss,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_hwdep,snd_pcm,snd_mixer_oss,snd_timer
snd_page_alloc 5941 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm
I loaded all modules that contain oss in their name:
$ sudo modprobe snd_pcm_oss snd_mixer_oss snd_seq_oss
I got all this information from here:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ALSA
But, after all this, still I don't have sound in the game.
Maybe I am making something wrong, or this problem is not related to OSS
Please any idea, I will be very grateful

I found the solution:
Install the package alsa-oss and launch the game with aoss:
$ aoss ./shadowgrounds-bin

It's pamonvashon again (the person who posted the question).  I fixed it so I'll tell you how in case it happens to you.  I was correct.  I went back and re downloaded the game,  "Virble".  At the beginning of the game o I used the buttons on the side of the phone to turn the sound off and on and the sound came on!  A miracle!  So beware of VIRBLE!!!

  • [solved] no sound in sdl games, oss

Just wasted ~3h of my life, i hope will save some people their time.
I'm using oss4. When pulseaudio was installed as dependency, sdl games sound disappeared.
Solution is either deinstall pulseaudio and reboot
    or put
    /etc/openal/alsoft.conf
    drivers=oss
    and
    export SDL_AUDIODRIVER=oss
(actually don't know if export works(setting openal.conf works for sure), i just deistalled pulseaudio, and have found in some forums, that export doesn't work)
    oss4 rocks (;

What the hell are you both talking about?
First of all, SHOW THE ERROR MESSAGE. It's a typical newbie mistake, to try interpreting what's happening, when he has no clue whatsoever of what's happening. So show the FACTS, and let people with experience judge THAT.
Secondly, "steam steals all the channels" - WTF? Windows channels, ALSA channels, OSS channels, WTF are you talking about?
You should be using wine with ALSA. Because ALSA has been the standard sound system in Linux for YEARS.

  • Sound input issues.  Not related to Soundflower or Balance issues

So.  With the sound flower issues fixed.  And my balance knobs in place for my stereo speakers.  I have opened up a new song I have been writing.  Again the AVIGrandpiano app was the track I was recording on.  Like my previous post from last week the input on the new music was very faint and not at all matching the input of the previous recorded music.  (See Screenshot on earlier posts)
I am at a loss as to where to begin to fix this.

  • Soundcard broken? noise/distorted sound in headphonejack with no relation to played audio

Sitting on a HP 625, a month ago or so I started experiencing this weird noise when the headphonejack is used, no matter what is connected (soundsystem, headphones etc). The sound starts off like a low hz distortion and gains to a very high pitched, cutting, unpleasant sound. This takes app 2-5 seconds and then totally disappears for a while until it comes again. It doesnt really matter if im playing something, the sound comes on at all times.
Would be amazingly thankful if anyone with knowledge of this problem and its solution would help.
    Thanks!
(if its sound specific, i could try to record what it sounds like and attach, just tell me)

    Hey chauhannaveen,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities! I'd take a look at the following article:
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2802
More specifically, the section titled "Acoustic-speaker/microphone/receiver" and the troubleshooting steps within. Follow those and that should help the issue.
    Have a good one,

  • AppStore and iCloud aunthefication problems (maybe hardware related things)

Hi. I have MBP (2006) with broken ethernet port but working wifi. I never woried about it cause I've used wireless everywhere.I had the interface "Ethernet" in the list of interfaces for years but MBP has not seen any cable plugged into it.
But after update to 10.7.x (I didn't really noticed when it had happened) ethernet interface has been missed from the list of interfaces. And at the same time AppStore stoped to work with my apple id with the message "Your device or computer could not be verified. Contact support for assistance". And now after starting iCloud services it doesn't work too: "This Apple ID is valid but is not an iCloud account"
My apple id is ok, I've checked it 4 times, everything is verified, I can buy applications and music at iTunes Music Store, authorize and deauthorize computers use it for iMessage on my iPad etc. iCloud works too on my iPad and at the website icloud.com — I can sync everything, backup to iCloud etc. But neither purchases at AppStore nor iCloud features works on my MacBook Pro.
I think its some eth0/eth1 related things, cause most of solutions for broken Apple ID on Macs are: "Remove /Library/Preferences/SystemConfigurations/* then reboot". I did it thosands of times but nothing happens. I tried to reset SMC but it doesn't work too — ethernet interface is still missing, AppStore and iCloud give me strange error messages and doesn't work.

Right - I have tried booting the MacMini using Chameleon.  Using these instructions: http://forum.netkas.org/index.php/topic,1123.0.html it boots.
Basically, Chameleon can be made to work if you re-format your HD to use a MBR boot sector.  Even the latest Chamelon (Chameleon_2.1svn_r1686_trunk_pkg) can be made to work by using a minimal org.chameleon.Boot config (i.e. not the one it installs by default - use the one in the first link/post as a basis).  You can also use Champlist to control your installation settings.
This enables me to change the model number, serial number, bios/efi version etc reported by the system - and you can also do this by manually editing the smbios.plist file
After booting I added relevant information into the settings to simulate a built-in ethernet port, after matching the specific settings for my macmini - but no luck.
I also booted it as a MacBook Air to see if this would negate the need for an inbuilt ethernet port - however no luck either.
Authentication failed in the same way.
Either the information reported by Apple System Profiler, and changed by Chamelon,  is surface-level and the 'true' information is still being read by the authentication process or there is something amiss with my 'hackintosh' settings.
I have a few more things to try including:
Booting using Chamelon and then deleting network prefs and seeing if this resets the authentication process on the next boot
Reverting the MacMini to stock macmini1,1 firmware. (Has been updated to macmini2,1 using method at: http://forum.netkas.org/index.php/topic,874.0.html)

  • SIGSEGV - maybe RMI related

    Hi all,
    Sorry for the not-quite-cross-post.

  • Usb 3.0 device to 2.0 port issue, maybe Mavericks related?

I have a 15" mid-2009 Mac Book Pro running 10.9.2.  The usb 2.0 ports seem to be working as my usb 3.0 external hard drive lights up but does not appear in under device in the Finder window.  External harddrive is working fine, checked it with a PC.  I use it with Time Machine as a backup device and it last worked in late December.  Not at all sure what's going on.

How did you check it with the PC?
How is the external HDD formatted?
Did you try all USB ports?
Did you try with a different cable?
Did you try it with a different enclosure?
Does it appear in Disk Utility?  If so, have you run Disk Utility>First Aid?
    Ciao.

Just by curiosity, do you have any idea of what can cause this corrupted file in iOS
It may be a transmission error (network problems)  when the photo was added to the stream, or one of the apps on your IOS device that writes to the Camera Roll, crashed and left a corrupted file. Are all your apps current? Perhaps you need to update one of them.
Added: If you can isolate the corrupted photo, you may be able to find out, how it was created - if it was taken with your iDevice, your digital camera, generated by some app.

  • System problem - MAYBE OSX related...?

I have no definitive answer or resolution thus far for this
problem in the forums and wanted to re-summarize it here, one more time, to see if anyone has
any other suggestions before i toss in the towel on self-repair efforts and invest in Apple Service.
    Problem:
    On a dual MDD G4 1.25, which i normally boot/use OS 9 on)
there is now a system 'hang time' of anywhere from 15-25 secs. in various circumstances including:
On boot-up, just after the Finder has loaded, I can move the mouse cursor but the Mac won't respond to clicks for up to 15-20 secs. Then, the "buffered clicks" get executed at once.
This hang time also occurs within certain applications, and on startup of IE Explorer there is an abnormal delay between the Open command and completion of startup cycle(opening to Home Page).
At first it appears a system freeze, but then ultimately system interactivity resumes eventually.
This machine is on a high-end Tripp-Lite power conditioner in a recording studio.
The problem seemed to begin after a day where i had multiple power fluctuations/outages requiring cold reboot several times.
I have swapped out both 512 Dimms and tried running with each separately and the problem remained.
TechTools has been run, OSX Permission Repairs run/re-run..
and i've done an OS 9-only "restore/reinstall" of that
System. I also ran a defragmentation off of techtools.
    Memory 'tested' as okay.
My internal HD is a 160g, one partition.
Since the problem occurs within OS 9 and i did reinstall that system, i would tend to think that rules out the System.
I can't detect any similar problem under OSX!
Things tried that didn't resolve it:
Emptying Servers Folder in the System Folder. Desktop Rebuild, PRAM/NVRAM resets, VM Off, Extensions OFF restart, (no change), Startup Items Folder/Prefs Folder EMPTIED and restart; no change. All Devices (USB/Firewire & Cable Modem, Keyboard/Mouse) disconnected/Restart; no change.
MemTest run on Dimms; Reported as OK.
Is there any point in reinstalling Sys software given all
this, or any ideas on what else to try?
    Thanks,
    Mike

Ron, I did, (conflicting opinions about Norton notwithstanding) run a Volume/Directory test from NDD (it is
a cumbersome process given that Norton must be on a separate computer and the machine in question must be in target-firewire mode to "access" the OS 9 System Folder - since the Norton app will not startup on the MDD machine...
"Apparently," it was able to process a test and no errors
were reported after running it, or, Tech Tools, on that System Folder.
I appreciate the idea. Not sure if there's an easier way to 'get at' the folder off a Norton Utilities disk as long as it resides in the peculiar dual-boot environment which presents a variety of challenges for anyone seeking to run any type of OS 9 diagnostics from a non OSX-based startup disk... not to mention the screwy reinstall/restore configuration of this particular Apple incarnation's install disk "set."
To put it bluntly, Mac really went out of its way to discourage any OS 9 loyalists with their "last OS 9 machine"
    --but i digress....
    Thanks
    Mike

  • HT201257 Screen/ Display Problems- maybe hardware related?

Has anyone experienced a problem with their display- where an open window repeats over and over the entire screen (sometimes appearing like random squares) and the only way to correct the display seems to be by opening finder and dragging it across the screen? This often occurs when using CS5 inDesign.
Does anyone have a solution/ diagnosis?
    Thanks in advance!

That sort of problem correlates with a graphics Hardware problem.
It is possible that if your graphics card is clogged with dust, blowing out the dust and allowing it to stay cool will resolve the problem, but I would not get my hopes up.
The Apple 5770 works in all Mac Pro models, about US$250. Do not buy a non-Apple version, as it will not show a picture under Mac OS X.

  • My mid 2007 24" is starting to have random shutdowns. Maybe heat related? Fans are working.

My 2007 iMac has started to shutdown randomly. The longer I use it the more frequent the shutdown happen. I can hear the fans working but the top of the computer is very warm. Is there over heating protection on these iMacs?

    Hello Ticks,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
I'd like you to please reset the SMC by following the steps in the article below and report back if the issue has been resolved or not.

  • 6800 Problem maybe Motherboard related

Ok im just going to get straight into it....
I recently replaced my built by ATi 9800 non pro for a brand new BFG 6800GT.
So i bring it home about 2 days ago, reformat to make sure all the old drivers are gone, installed win xp, then sp2 (w/ DirectX 9.0c), then my Chipset/AGP drivers and finally my video card (61.77) and soundcard drivers.
    So far so good...
    I run 3dmark and get some very good scores (3dmark03: 10,900 / 3dmark01: 19833)
So next i install call of duty and thats where the problem begins...
Terrible and  i mean TERRIBLE performance, my 9800 non pro beats out my GT in alot of situations. The biggest problem is the FPS dropping randomly from about 125 to 30 then getting choppy then going back up to normal (On LAN and online servers).
The problem only seems to be occuring in OpenGL / Quake3 Engine games.
So from there i went and downloaded the 65.73 and 65.76 drivers, tested them both (After uninstalling and running driver cleaner) still no luck.
From there i tried all the drivers between 60.xx - 66.xx and still no change.
So finally i run live update 3, get all the new updated mobo drivers and flash my BIOS to the latest version and still terrible FPS drops and random choppyness.
At this point im almost ready to return the 6800GT and buy a X800 Pro and see if that works which i have a chance to tommorow (Friday).
If you know anyway to fix this or what the problem might be or if i should just buy the X800 please let me know asap.
My system specs are below in my sig
    Thanks,
    Phourstar
*EDIT: Forgot to add I've tried playing with AA/AF off and Vsync off and still bad results, i currently have everything set to low detail in my games and 800x600 no AA/AF and vsync off *

    Hi
there are several things that can cause problems some which can be solved easily and some not so easy. Ive heard many problems with BFG ultras but not so many with the GT's but i suggest your first port of call should be BFG to see if they have a new BIOS for your card as they had to release one for the ultra.
Other options to try are ... turn OFF fastwrites in the mobo BIOS , raise the agp aperature size to 256Mb , make sure nothing else is on the same power cable plugged into the GT , increase case ventilation or leave side of case off while testing as the 6800's throttle back if they get too hot , or trade in for a standard GT not a pre overclocked one from BFG
thats all i can think of right now ..
    best of luck

  • New Z77A-GD65 - No Onboard Audio

I've just purchased a MSI Z77A-GD65 BIOS version 10.8 which is running on Windows 8 Pro x64. I am unable to get the onboard sound to work (ALC898).
It is detected in device manager as RealTek HighDefinition Audio. I've installed the latest drivers. In the Realtek display panel the Digital output is enabled and the front jack and backpanel are greyed out.
I disabled the "Front jack panel detection" which enabled the front panel output, but the sound coming from my headphones is like someone scratching their nails on a blackboard (screeching).
I am unable to get the backpanel to be detected at all.
    What i have tried:
    1. Enable/Disable in BIOS
    2. BIOS update
    3. MSI and Realtek drivers (Latest)
    4. Different speakers/headphone (all work in other devices)
    5. Setup the PC outside the case
None of which have solved my problem.
At the moment i'm using an ASUS Xonar DX so i have sound, but i'd like to have all the features of my motherboard available.
Could this be a hardware failure?
    Jack.

Speakers are set standard device and still no sound sounds like a (maybe win8 related) software issue or even hardware failure. Normally setting Headphones (front) and Speakers (back) to standard device should be sufficient to switch between those. Try deactivating digital audio. Also the Xonar needs to be removed as you had it installed in your screenshot try:

    Thanks.
I tried now, but still no audio. It's as before.
    Here is a screen shot
Digital is disabled and even though my speakers are plugged into the Green output on the back of the motherboard it's not registering in Windows.
