No unicode and no matrix font

I recently reinstalled my arch linux system and I found that unicode and matrix font (cmatrix -l) doesnt work in rxvt-unicode. Using "cmatrix -l" in the regular tty terminal works but neither does unicode. When I try to view Japanese texts it outputs garbage. I installed the asian fonts suggested in the fonts page in the wiki.

zowki wrote:
I have matrix.fnt in these locations:
/etc/fonts/matrix.fnt
/usr/share/kbd/consolefonts/matrix.fnt
It seems to only work in TTY terminals. Is it because matrix.fnt is a terminal only font?
Here I actually have mtx font in the standard path:
$ pacman -Ql cmatrix
cmatrix /usr/
cmatrix /usr/bin/
cmatrix /usr/bin/cmatrix
cmatrix /usr/man/
cmatrix /usr/man/man1/
cmatrix /usr/man/man1/cmatrix.1.gz
cmatrix /usr/share/
cmatrix /usr/share/fonts/
cmatrix /usr/share/fonts/misc/
cmatrix /usr/share/fonts/misc/mtx.pcf
cmatrix /usr/share/kbd/
cmatrix /usr/share/kbd/consolefonts/
cmatrix /usr/share/kbd/consolefonts/matrix.fnt
cmatrix /usr/share/kbd/consolefonts/matrix.psf.gz
Note this line: /usr/share/fonts/misc/mtx.pcf
But this font doesn't present in /usr/share/fonts/misc/fonts.dir so I can't use it.
I copied this font file out into a directory and tried to add the font manually. Say:
$ cp mtx.pcf ~/.fonts
and then run these in ~/.fonts directory:
$ cd ~/.fonts
$ mkfontdir
$ xset fp+ ~/.fonts
$ fc-cache
This makes the font available to the X server. But urxvt refuses to use it:
$ urxvt -fn "mtx"
unable to deduce codeset, ignoring font 'mtx'
urxvt: unable to load base fontset, please specify a valid one using -fn, aborting.
$ urxvt -fn "xft:mtx"
urxvt: unable to calculate font width for 'mtx:minspace=True', ignoring.
urxvt: unable to load base fontset, please specify a valid one using -fn, aborting.
On the other hand xterm is happy with this font, just type in xterm -fn mtx and it works. And
cmatrix also works fine. So I think you need to do something before you can use it with urxvt.
Maybe edit it using fontforge?
Please point out if I missed something.

• [SOLVED] rxvt-unicode and Powerline patched fonts

Hey all,
I'm trying to make my zsh prompt look like this - https://gist.github.com/3712874
As it says, it requires patched font. I downloaded two of them - Inconsolata-dz for Powerline and Menlo for Powerline.
If in .Xresources I put Menlo as my font of choice, the prompt looks like in linked page - all characters are displayed properly.
If, however, I put Inconsolata as my font of coice, charcters will fail to show up and those rectangles will be shown. (as if those characters do not exist in that font)
Important thing to note is that BOTH fonts work fine in ViM (with Powerline plugin) - it shows characters which are displayed as rectangles in zsh prompt.
Any ideas?

! Font
!URxvt*font: xft:Inconsolata-dz for Powerline:size=10
URxvt*font: xft:Menlo for Powerline:regular:size=10
i also tried xft:Inconsolata-dz for Powerline:Medium:size=10 - didn't work. if i change the font size, it is changed in the terminal too, so unless terminal can interpret size even though i didn't get the font right, i don't think that's it.
i found inconsolata(non dz) for powerline, will try that one now
edit: non dz version doesn't work, same thing as with dz

• Upgraded to 5.0 and now more fonts aren't showing up correctly

I had a previous problem with a colon not appearing correctly on websites and instead, I got FF 1A. Initially it looked like FF IR but FF 1A is the unicode or UTF font for that being it is a wider colon than normal.
I downloaded every font set I could find, even things that are odd shaped things I couldn't possibly ever use and the colon problem was taken care of, but then certain things in email started showing up with an FF 1A, or something else for that unicode and now that I've upgraded to 5.0, a lot more websites are showing these instead of the actual letters, numbers, or punctuation marks.
I even have Fontfinder installed but it isn't much help. I never had this problem until version 4.0.1 I don't know what else to do. I have Unicode UTF-8 for the character encoding because that is what fixed the colon problem, but now I'm having trouble with more characters.
I can't read the boxes, like I could for the colon FF 1A, but on this website
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/8_Man
Before each episode there are several boxes and each has a different set of numbers and letters and I zoomed in as much as I could and still can't make them out "魔女エスパー The Witch Esper" I can't tell if the first one is 98 54 or 9B 54. But there are several of these on this website, and I don't know what other fonts to try and install.
They are messed up in Internet Explorer, but most of them are just boxes with nothing in them, but I know this is support for Mozilla Firefox only and I don't really use Internet Explorer.
I can't seem to get online when someone in "Live Help" is available and there isn't a phone number to reach anyone in Support so I am very frustrated because these problems weren't happening before version 4 or 5 and I can't find any more fonts that would help. I believe "Wingdings" are automatically installed with Windows-XP, but these missing characters are supposed to be letters, numbers or punctuation marks, and they aren't showing up correctly, so windings wouldn't matter anyways and I am at my wits end.
I have never had a problem with any computer until now and I even reformatted and did every single update available for Windows-XP and even the ones that are still coming out.
For some reason below where it says
We've made some educated guesses about your current browser and operating system. When I click on "Show Details" under "installed plug-ins", it shows these
* Office Plugin for Netscape Navigator
* Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape 10.1.0
* DRM Store Netscape Plugin
* DRM Netscape Network Object
But I don't know why and I doubt that is the problem. You can't even get Netscape anymore.
It's so frustrating because it is messing up reading email and doing surveys that I didn't have this problem with before using versions 4 or 5.
In my "Windows\Fonts" folder, I have 375 files over 41 MB so I don't know what to do. I'm about ready to throw the computer out the window being I can't respond properly to an email or do surveys, if I can't read the letters.
4.0.1 was was a clean install after I had to reformat a couple weeks ago but 5.0 was an update that I just did tonight.
I thank everyone in advance.
Susan

Thanks one again. I know you helped me the last to. I do have the Deja Vu font set in my folder. I downloaded and the last time. So I don't know if there is supposed to be more or not, but those were installed with Windows-XP after my reformat.
This is really driving me nuts. as I've done several re-formats on my computer and several friends computers and even upgraded hardware so I am not necessarily a software or programming expert, I am somewhat advanced when it comes to computers in general and can usually diagnose the problem but these font's are the problem and they never were before.
I did see in another forum that if you had a Dell Computer and did the Microsoft update for the onboard video card driver that it could be the culprit, but I have that disabled being I have a much better graphics card so the updates from Microsoft for the onboard video weren't installed.
It' a Dell Dimension 3000 with an Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller so I don't believe it is the culprit being it is disabled. The actual video card that I am using is a PCI Nvidia GeForce 9400 GT with 1 GB Memory. And I didn't have any problem before.
I appreciate the help. But still can't get things to work. Live Help Chat doesn't open for another two hours so maybe they can do "Remote Access" or something and can check setting and help me. But if you come up with other suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again.

• Unicode and Java

Hi
As we all know Java treat character literals as Unicode characters. I have been studying Unicode and the way they treat characters and I have a doubt which is not specific to Java code but specific to Unicode.
Unicode states that each character is assigned a number which is unique, this number is called code point.
The relationship between characters and code points is 1:1.
Eg: the String *"hello"* (which is sequence of character literals) can be represent by the following Code Points
*e H l l o*
I also read that a certain character code point must be recognized by a specific encoding or else a question mark (?) is output in place of the character. Not all code points can be recognized by an encoding.
So, the letter *ל* would not be recognized by all encodings and should be replaced by a question mark (?) right?
The interesting is that this code point represents a different character and not a *"?"* in other encodings. It should print the same character
This is the HTML code I used for tests (save it in your hard disk and open using your navigator, then select the following encodings: UTF16, ISO-8859-1)

The relationship between characters and code points is 1:1.Uhm .... let's assume "yes" for the moment. (Note that the relationship between the Java type char and code point is not 1:1 and there are other exceptions ...)
Eg: the String *"hello"* (which is sequence of character literals) can be represent by the following Code Points
*e H l l o*Those are the Java String unicode escapes. If you want to talk about Unicode Codepoints, then the correct notation for "Hello" would be
U+0048 U+0065 U+006C U+006C U+006F
Note that you swapped the H and e.
I also read that a certain character code point must be recognized by a specific encoding or else a question mark (?) is output in place of the character.This one is Java specific. If Java tries to translate some unicode character to bytes using some encoding that doesn't support that character then it will output the byte(s) for "?" instead.
Not all code points can be recognized by an encoding.Some encodings (such as UTF-8) can encode all codepoints, others (such as ISO-8859-*, EBCDIC or UCS-2) can not.
So, the letter *ל* would not be recognized by all encodings and should be replaced by a question mark (?) right?Only in a very specific case in Java. This is not a genral Unicode-level rule.
(disclaimer: the HTML code presented was using decimal XML entities to represent the unicode characters).
What you are seing is possibly the replacement character that your text rendering system uses to represent characters that it knows, but can't display (possibly because the current font has no character for them).

• [Jtable Unicode and Save Dialog]

Hi all,
I'm doing a swing application in which I use Jtable.
In this Jtable, i want that the user can enter unicode character so
i do this :
Font font_unicode = new Font("Arial Unicode MS", Font.PLAIN, 13);
table.setFont(font_unicode);It works fine : the user can enter japanese character.
My problem is that when i want to save data that are in my jtable. I want to save it in a txt file(I use a txt filter), I loose unicode character.
I use a save dialog as you can see :
JFileChooser chooser = new JFileChooser();
chooser.setFileFilter(info.main.Filter);
chooser.setCurrentDirectory(new File("."));
if (chooser.showSaveDialog(chooser) == JFileChooser.APPROVE_OPTION) {
try {
BufferedWriter bufferedWriter = new BufferedWriter(new FileWriter(chooser
.getSelectedFile(), false));
PrintWriter fileWriter = new PrintWriter(bufferedWriter);
}I saw that in excel(office) there is a possibility to save in "unicode text" and I would like to know if it's also possible in swing. I really need it.
I'm waiting for your answer..
THX

thanks for your answer but i don't find the code for unicode.
and also i don't know if it's possible to add code for this :
BufferedWriter bufferedWriter = new BufferedWriter(new FileWriter(chooser
.getSelectedFile(), false));
PrintWriter fileWriter = new PrintWriter(bufferedWriter);

When I convert my pdf doc to word, the fonts go really weird and it also puts some text into boxes. when I try to select the text and change the font, it does not change it properly? This is making it impossible to amend.

Hi Janedance1,
If the PDF that you converted already has searchable text, please try disabling OCR as described in this document: How to disable Optical Character Recognition (OCR) when converting PDF to Word or Excel. (If the PDF was created from a scanned document and doesn't already have searchable text, disabling OCR isn't a great option, as the text won't be searchable/editable in the converted Word doc.)
Please let us know how it goes.

• How can one edit a .gif file graphics background and change the fonts in Photoshop Elements 13?

I am trying to change the color and fonts of some of my web sites .gif files. Can I change the color to another hexadecimal color and change the fonts of the letters in Photoshop 13? I am using Windows 7 and heard that you could save the .gif file to another format, edit it, then change the file back to a .gif file. Is this true? If so, how do you do it? The file just has a solid color with the letters "Firm " on it. No animation.

You can edit a gif without changing the format, but once you save the file as a gif the text becomes part of the image, not text anymore, so you would need to clone or heal away the existing text and then create a new text layer and use save for web to create a new gif.
For access to the most editing tools, while the file is open in the editor go to image>mode and change it from index color to RGB. Saving as a gif will change it back to index mode.

Is it not possible to create a text box, fill it with dynamic (data driven) text, but make the font size either scale up or down automatically, so that the entire text box is filled? This is a feature in PrintShop Mail Pro called COPY FIT. but no such feature in Indesign??

• I bought and installed many fonts for a project and one font in particular which is showing up in the font list on a new file, is missing when I open an existing file containing that font. I can't understand why that's happening and the font is Centrale S

Hi
I am encountering a missing font error on Adobe Illustrator for a font that I recently bought - Centrale Sans Bold. This font is clearly installed in the system's font folder and is also showing in the font list on Adobe Illustrator. But when I open an existing file containing this font it is giving the error "The document uses fonts or characters which are not available or are in a different format than originally specified".
We have also bought Centrale Sans regular from a different website as we couldn't find both on one, could that be clashing somehow?
Also the existing file was created on MAC plattform and we are using a windows plattform to open it. That to me doesn't seem like an issue as all other files are opening up fine and I have bought around 47 fonts and only this font seems to be not working. I have also written to the website I bought it from but I have also bought around 20-25 fonts from them and all the other fonts are working fine too. Maybe its an illustrator related problem?
Please help!!!!!!

There is one way its getting fixed. Once I update my Adobe Illustrator CC to Adobe Illustrator CC 2014 it is further allowing me to go into the system folder and allocate the font to the file so that it can replace it. My only concern now is that our MAC partners who will receive these files back from us have Adobe CS6. We will down save it to CS6 but I hope they won't experience any font issues because of us using CC 2014? Any light you can shed on this?

How do I get all my fonts to work. I upgraded the OS and the old fonts don't seem to work.

If the fonts are installed on the OS they should be there already. If they were only available to CS5 they are probably in the fonts folder in the Adobe section of the Common files (location will be OS dependent), or they may be in ID's own fonts folder.

• PDF created using Java iText package - Text not editable and not displaying font properties on Acrobat

Hi,
I have an issue in editing the text and viewing the font properties of a text region on a PDF created using Java iText package.
I use Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended and the option Tools -> Advanced Editing -> TouchUp Text Tool.
The strange behaviour is that, I have 2 PDFs created out of the same base PDF and text added via Java iText package with the same Text, Font and other properties.
One of the PDF has the text region editable on Acrobat but the other one has the text region which is not editable.
But both the PDFs are editable via Adobe Illustrator.
I have attached both the PDFs for your reference
PDF_Editable.pdf - Editable on Acrobat
PDF_Not Editable.pdf - Not Editable on Acrobat
Any help or insight to find out the difference/issue with the PDF which is not editable via Acrobat would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

You don't have direct control of the leading of a multiline text field. A common approach is to control the background color of the field with JavaScript since the lines are not really needed when the field is used in Reader/Acrobat. They may be useful when using the form by hand. For more information, see the posts by Max in this topic: http://acrobatusers.com/forum/forms-acrobat/how-do-i-use-multi-lined-text-fields-over-prin ted-line-area-existing-form

In the project I'm working on, code changes the font a text box uses based on region and language. To keep file size down I created separate swf files with the fonts embedded. That way I only download the font I need. The way I did this and the code I used in CS4 doesn't seem to work anymore. Can someone please point me to a tutorial on this.
Thanks

OK, maybe you can help me figure out what I'm doing wrong. Below is the code I'm using.
LOADING THE FONT
Font SWFs:
I'm trying something new with CS5. To create a swf with the font I need I'm creating a library symbol of the font with all the characters in it. Titled it "Verdana". I've also turned on Export for ActionScript and given the font a unique class name (VerdanaFont). Then of course publish the swf, name it Verdana.swf, and put it in the correct location. Does doing it this way automatically register the font?
The Loader code:
private function LoadFont()
var fontPath:String = "assets/fonts/Verdana.swf";
var fontLoader:Loader = new Loader();
fontLoader.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, createTextBox);
fontLoader.load(new URLRequest(fontPath));
The TextBox code:
private function createTextBox()
var tf:TextFormat = new TextFormat;
tf.font = "Verdana";
tf.align = "left";
var textBox:TextField = new TextField;
textBox.embedFonts = true;
textBox.selectable = false;
textBox.htmlText = "This is test text";
textBox.setTextFormat(tf);
stage.addChild(textBox);
