No Wifi ... Wifi grayed out

I have a 16GB WiFi iPa2 model. Suddenly my Wifi connection dropped and after that Wifi option itself grayed out. I restarted reset the ipad but without result. Can anyone help me what the problem is?

This is a fairly common issue with the iOS devices, namely, the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2. Apple has characterized this as a "rare instance"; however, if you search community sites outside of Apple you will find that this issue is wide spread and the pages that feature "Fixes" recommend rather unorthodox approaches such as variously heating and then chilling your device. Something related to the temperature monitor on the iPad is connected in some strange way to the WIFI system. These pages have, in some cases (see YouTube) have upwards of 100,000 views. This means that roughly that many people are having this issue. Now, maybe 100,000 people is a drop in the bucket statistically where Apple's total sales volume is concerned; however, that is cold comfort for those experiencing what is really an equipment failure. Apple is not likely to recognize this until a class action suit is brought against them on this issue. Initial searches on this have shown many other class action suits but not for this particular issue. It would probably be most effective if launched within the USA and would force Apple to recognize the "significant" number of product failures.
If you have the cash then it will cost you anywhere between $200-$300 to have it fixed at which point you start thinking Landfill then a switch to Android or HP. As you can tell I have been rather frustrated by this myself. I must say that I own 7 iPads and 3 iPhones and 6 laptops and as a longtime Mac user, I have never had a product issue like this but that doesn't take away my frustration and anger at feeling taken advantage of on this one particular purchase.

  • My iphone 4s only works when plugged in, experiences random crashes, and the wifi is grayed out?

First post here. I'm experiencing some pretty complicated issues with my iphone 4s of several years, which began yesterday at random. I'm sorry for the length, but if someone could read through all of this and help me out, I would be so grateful.
I started experiencing some complex issues with my iphone yesterday, seemingly at random. I was taking a phone call, and all of a sudden, my phone goes dark. The battery was between 50%-80% at the time. I immediately plugged it in, and the apple logo appeared and began to power on. When it came back on however, I immediately noticed some changes. For starters, the battery leapt to 100%. The top corner of my phone where the carrier and bars should be says "searching..." (this never goes away). When I go into settings, the wifi is grayed out and says "no wifi."
That's not the worst of it though. As of last night, the number of times my phone crashes has gotten progressively worse. Now, even when I plug my iphone in to a wall charger, it stays on for maybe 1-4 minutes before it crashes completely. After this, it sometimes restarts itself. Before the shut-down, there are usually some weird bars or colors that flash across the screen (it's always different). I'm running on ios5 (I just really like the layout so much more, so I never bothered updating).
I don't think I did anything out of the ordinary to my phone. I walked in the rain for a short while when it was in my back pocket, but I've done this many times before and I don't see how that could create massive water damage. Also, it worked perfectly fine for a few hours after I got home. Quite literally, this just happened out of the blue. No warning, no signals, nothing. So far, I've tried...
    - turning it on and off (duh)
    - doing a hard reboot by holding down the middle and top buttons, several times
    - resetting the network settings
    - turning off data roaming and toggling airplane mode on and off
I even attempted the freezer trick. I didn't put the phone in the actual freezer because I was worried about condensation, but I did set it down on an icepack. This seemed to keep it alive a little bit longer before crashing, but only marginally so. My original plan was to plug my phone into my computer and download all my pictures and whatnot before attempting a complete data wipe and factory reset, but this also seems impossible. When I plug the phone into my laptop, the little apple logo comes and goes, but it simply never powers on fully. And even if it did, I doubt it would stay on long enough for me to complete a download without things crashing.
I'm totally lost here. Is my phone wrecked? I'm sensitive about my privacy, so I'm not crazy about the idea of taking my phone to the apple store and having them make some sort of copy of my data. I'm also not crazy about uploading all of my phones data to iTunes or the cloud or something like that. In addition to this, I don't know how I would salvage my in-app data. That's also something I'm worried about. I can't attempt to update my ios without wifi or the ability to plug my phone into a computer. All of this would be a lot easier if I could keep my iphone on longer than 2 minutes.
I've had this phone for years. I really don't want to just let it die at random and never even know why. I just feel like this hit me out of nowhere. Any suggestions about what I could do? I'm willing to try everything. I'm planning on calling apple, but I was thinking of asking online first.
BONUS: if anyone could answer these extra questions (you don't have to), that would be awesome! When you do a complete data wipe and restore your iphone to factory settings, where does all of your data go? Is it actually *gone* for good? I'm not just talking about photos, but also internet history, in-app data, and youtube history from the youtube app. Does it disappear completely? Or does it get stored somewhere. Also, is there anyway to downgrade a new iphone to an earlier ios without jail breaking it? I've pretty much lost hope with this phone, but if I get a new one, I just wish there was some way to keep using the old ios I'm used to.
Thanks so much to anyone who can answer these questions.

    I have tried everything
If that is the case, by definition there is nothing left you can do...
Did you try connecting to another computer?  Did this computer ever detect the phone?  Does the USB system on your computer work normally with other devices?  What is your computer OS version?  iTunes version??

  • HT4946 My iPod connection to wifi is grayed out. My iPod won't connect. The only thing that has changed is that I downloaded the iTunes software as requested. What do I do now?

I connected my wifi to my iMac and was asked if I wanted to download the most current update. I backed up my iPod and did the download. My iPod was able to connect to the internet at my friend's house, but it hasn't been able to connect since then, and the connection to wifi is grayed out. Nothing has changed with the network; just the updated software.
The update occured on 06/08/13 at 10:41 PM
    Please help.

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • IPhone 4s and can't connect to wifi, wifi is grayed out and says "No wifi".FREEZER TRICK WORKS!

I have iPhone 4s wchick cannot connect on wifi, wifi is grayes out and says"No wifi",i restart my phone,i reboot it and finally i restore it the problem remains,i put it on a freezer for more than 5 minutes and works for 1-2 minutes, but when outside temperature returns on the phone still can't connect on Wifi!what to do?
Anyone having the same problem? My iPhone 4s its not 6 months old!

Try restoring your phone usng DFU mode. Here are steps to get DFU Mode: Open iTunes on computer. Connect iPhone to computer. (some turn off iPhone here, I do not) Hold both home and power buttons for exactly 10 seconds, release power button, keep holding home button until iPhone recognizes iPhone in Recovery Mode. Usually takes 10-20 seconds of holding the home button. If the iPhone screen is black (blank) the iPhone is in DFU Mode.

  • My wifi is grayed out on my iPhone. How do I fix this?

I have an iPhone 4S with iOS7.0.3 and my wifi suddenly grayed out making it unable for me to use it. I have already tried restarting my network settings and I also restarted my whole iPhone but it is still grayed out. And now my Sprint cellphone service isn't working either. Does it have something to do with Sprint? Please help me.

    Hey Brianasurfergirl,
If your Wi-Fi is grayed out, these are the recommended steps:
Verify that airplane mode is off by tapping Settings > Airplane Mode.
Reset the network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Note: This will reset all network settings, including Bluetooth pairing records, Wi-Fi passwords, VPN, and APN settings.
Ensure that your device is using the latest software. To do so, connect your device to your computer and check for updates in iTunes.
If your issue is still unresolved, perform a software restore in iTunes.

I crossed off the one you had already mentioned doing. I would start off with these and see if it resolves both the Wi-Fi issue and the cellular issue as well.
    Take care,

    wifi button grayed out

    Hi SantaDoug!
I can relate that it can be quite problematic not having Wi-Fi on your device.
When the Wi-Fi button is greyed out I would recommend following this article.
If the issue remains you should contact AppleCare for your country or the point of purchase, as a service is most likely the only solution.

You are having a hardware failure.  You will need to bring your phone to Apple for replacement.  If not under warranty, expect to pay $199 for out of warranty replacement.
