My iphone 4s only works when plugged in, experiences random crashes, and the wifi is grayed out?

First post here. I'm experiencing some pretty complicated issues with my iphone 4s of several years, which began yesterday at random. I'm sorry for the length, but if someone could read through all of this and help me out, I would be so grateful.
I started experiencing some complex issues with my iphone yesterday, seemingly at random. I was taking a phone call, and all of a sudden, my phone goes dark. The battery was between 50%-80% at the time. I immediately plugged it in, and the apple logo appeared and began to power on. When it came back on however, I immediately noticed some changes. For starters, the battery leapt to 100%. The top corner of my phone where the carrier and bars should be says "searching..." (this never goes away). When I go into settings, the wifi is grayed out and says "no wifi."
That's not the worst of it though. As of last night, the number of times my phone crashes has gotten progressively worse. Now, even when I plug my iphone in to a wall charger, it stays on for maybe 1-4 minutes before it crashes completely. After this, it sometimes restarts itself. Before the shut-down, there are usually some weird bars or colors that flash across the screen (it's always different). I'm running on ios5 (I just really like the layout so much more, so I never bothered updating).
I don't think I did anything out of the ordinary to my phone. I walked in the rain for a short while when it was in my back pocket, but I've done this many times before and I don't see how that could create massive water damage. Also, it worked perfectly fine for a few hours after I got home. Quite literally, this just happened out of the blue. No warning, no signals, nothing. So far, I've tried...
- turning it on and off (duh)
- doing a hard reboot by holding down the middle and top buttons, several times
- resetting the network settings
- turning off data roaming and toggling airplane mode on and off
I even attempted the freezer trick. I didn't put the phone in the actual freezer because I was worried about condensation, but I did set it down on an icepack. This seemed to keep it alive a little bit longer before crashing, but only marginally so. My original plan was to plug my phone into my computer and download all my pictures and whatnot before attempting a complete data wipe and factory reset, but this also seems impossible. When I plug the phone into my laptop, the little apple logo comes and goes, but it simply never powers on fully. And even if it did, I doubt it would stay on long enough for me to complete a download without things crashing.
I'm totally lost here. Is my phone wrecked? I'm sensitive about my privacy, so I'm not crazy about the idea of taking my phone to the apple store and having them make some sort of copy of my data. I'm also not crazy about uploading all of my phones data to iTunes or the cloud or something like that. In addition to this, I don't know how I would salvage my in-app data. That's also something I'm worried about. I can't attempt to update my ios without wifi or the ability to plug my phone into a computer. All of this would be a lot easier if I could keep my iphone on longer than 2 minutes.
I've had this phone for years. I really don't want to just let it die at random and never even know why. I just feel like this hit me out of nowhere. Any suggestions about what I could do? I'm willing to try everything. I'm planning on calling apple, but I was thinking of asking online first.
BONUS: if anyone could answer these extra questions (you don't have to), that would be awesome! When you do a complete data wipe and restore your iphone to factory settings, where does all of your data go? Is it actually *gone* for good? I'm not just talking about photos, but also internet history, in-app data, and youtube history from the youtube app. Does it disappear completely? Or does it get stored somewhere. Also, is there anyway to downgrade a new iphone to an earlier ios without jail breaking it? I've pretty much lost hope with this phone, but if I get a new one, I just wish there was some way to keep using the old ios I'm used to.
Thanks so much to anyone who can answer these questions.

I have tried everything
If that is the case, by definition there is nothing left you can do...
Did you try connecting to another computer?  Did this computer ever detect the phone?  Does the USB system on your computer work normally with other devices?  What is your computer OS version?  iTunes version??

My Ipod touch will only work when plugged into an Itouch radio.  When I take it out of the charger, it goes blank.  The battery shows fully charged.  It appears that the battery is no longer charging.  What should I do?

Try a reset: Hold the home and power buttons at the same time until the Apple boot logo appears. No data will be lost. If that fails, the battery may have gone kaput.

You are referring to a feature called Clamshell Mode, please read Clamshell Mode setup for instructions.
BTW when posting when you use generalities such as "have tried everything" this tells us nothing. When posting please be specific and try to paint a complete picture. It just makes things easier for those trying to help you.

  • Only works when plugged in

My iPad 2 was left on overnight, not plugged in with the battery at 95% last I checked. This morning it was off and I was unable to turn it on. I plugged it into the charger and it seemed to start up, but the date and time had been reset to December 31st 1969 at 4pm!!! Then, I tried to reset the date and time but it would automatically keep going back to that date. When I went to unplug it, so I could sync it with iTunes, it turned off immediately! It only works when plugged into the charger and even then it turned itself off after about 2 minutes. While unplugged, I tried a hard reset (holding the home and sleep/wake button down at same time for 15 seconds, but it doesn't do anything at all. I did notice that it was pretty hot yesterday, but didn't have any problems running it at all. Any suggestions, or is this clearly a hardware problem? Thanks in advance.

When it was plugged in, it was at 95% so that's not the issue. THe battery appears charged, but the device simply doesn't want to run on it. The weird date reset makes me think it could potentially be a software issue, but I'm worried it is essentially a hardware/battery problem.

  • My iPod only works when plugged into a wall socket!

Anyone know why my iPOD only works when plugged into a wall outlet? I tried it on the Bose docking station and also my MacBook and it won't work!
    Any ideas??

Sounds like a dead battery.  You can have Apple swap out the battery for a flat fee or you can send it to a third party service center to have them do the same for job a little less.

  • 7th gen Nano only works when plugged in, turns off when  unplugged... battery is fully charged.

7th gen Nano only works when plugged into computer, as soon as I unplug it shuts off (it was ejected from iTunes). Battery is fully charged.  Have already done a restore in iTunes and checked for updated software.

    Hello there, DizDude.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some good recommendations for troubleshooting battery issues with the 7th generation iPod Nano:
iPod nano (7th generation): Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4433
    Particularly this section:
    Battery life appears short
Learn how to conserve battery life.
Ensure that the latest software is installed on the iPod.
When charging, use the cable that came with iPod nano (7th generation) and leave the device connected until it is fully charged.
Note: If you are charging using your computer, don't connect iPod nano (7th generation) to your keyboard. Also, the computer must be turned on and not in sleep or standby mode. If iPod nano (7th generation) is connected to a computer that's not turned on or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPod nano (7th generation) battery may drain.
When you are done using the iPod nano, verify that:
The Radio application is off (tap the button)
Music is paused (tap the button in the iPod application or disconnect the earphones)
There is no active Pedometer session (tap the Stop button in the Fitness application)
Dimming the screen is another way to extend battery life on iPod nano. Go to Settings > General > Brightness and restore the brightness to the default, or drag the slider to the left to lower the default screen brightness.
Playing tracks with EQ requires your iPod processor to consume more energy than playing tracks without EQ, because the EQ information is not encoded in the song. To prolong battery life, turn EQ off if you don't use it. Go to Settings > Music > EQ and select Off from the list. Note, however, that if you've added EQ to tracks in iTunes, you'll need to set EQ to Flat to have the effect of Off, because iPod keeps your iTunes settings intact.
Try restoring iPod nano (7th generation) by connecting it to iTunes and clicking Restore.
    Test the battery life.
    Issue not resolved
If the issue is still not resolved, please read this information on servicing your iPod.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

    Hello Philly,
I believe that when you reset your ipod(command given from the computer, right?)  touch WHILE the ipod was updating, It cleared the system in the middle of writing files, thus corrupting(equivalent of cutting of in the middle of a sentence) the basic running system.
I suggest you go to an apple store and ask for a technical diagonosis in person. they may offer to help if the problem is fixable. If your ipod is still under warrenty, i would guess it would be free/low cost.

  • I think something is wrong with my battery. Only works when plugged in.

My battery says its fully charged but only works when I keep it plugged in. I was using it yesterday and it just shut off randomly and started this stuff. I have no idea what I should do. Help?

You can get a new third party battery fairly cheap on eBay. Every MacBook from 2006 through Mid 2009 except the Late 2008 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 and 2010 White Unibodies use the same A1185 battery.

  • Classic iPod not charging; only works when plugged in

My iPod Classic would work only when plugged in my computer or to the wall. I noticed that when I plug it, the battery automatically turns green and the fully-charged symbol appear. However, when I unplug it, it doesn't work. Any ideas on what I can do? It's no longer under gaurantee so anything that I can do at home would be helpful. Thank you xx

Seems very unlikely you need a new Macbook since it works when "plugged in"; at worst you will have to spring for a new battery.
Try running this program - it will give you info about the state of the battery:

  • How to recover music? iPod only works when plugged into wall outlet

My iPod is probably 5 years old or so. It's been acting up for a while and I stupidly, did not back it up.
The battery was replaced this weekend so it works when plugged into the wall. It will not power on or do anything when not plugged into the wall. When plugged into the wall charger, it can turn on and says it is charging. It can be used then but as soon as it is unplugged, it's dead.
When it is plugged into the computer, it says "Charging. Please wait...". There isn't enough power from my laptop to power the iPod, so my computer doesn't even recognize it. It does not show up in iTunes.
On the brightside, I have a new iPod classic waiting to be used. However, I would VERY much like to get my 90gb+ off of my old iPod first. Is there a way to do this?
I'm at a loss. Some of the files are on there are not anywhere else. I have a few songs by a friend who lost them on their own computer.
Any help would be very appreciated!

Bump. Is there no way to solve this?

    I have MacKeeper installed
    Oh dear.
Many users will see references to an application called MacKeeper on various web sites and via pop-ups on their browser. Not only is it expensive for what it purports to do (freeware applications that do the same or more are readily available), it can sometimes install itself without the user realising it, and it can be very tricky to get rid of.
Most positive reviews of it have been found to have been paid for by Zeobit (developers of MacKeeper) in the form of ‘free upgrades’ etc. For example (posted by fellow contributor Softwater), on their Facebook page and on their webpage they have this apparent endorsement from UNC Charlotte:
    https://discussions.apple.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2-18670779-12515 7/450-259/Screen+Shot+2012-06-17+at+17.04.04.png
Softwater contacted the Director of IT at the College of Arts and Architecture UNC Charlotte, about whether they endorse MacKeeper and his response, quoted here, was:
No, please do not download and install MacKeeper. We have seen problems with this software in the past.
MacKeeper has been described by various sources as highly invasive malware* that can de-stablize your operating system, adding that it is unethically marketed, with a history of making false advertising claims, by a company called Zeobit and a rip-off.
For more details about Zeobit’s alledgedly fraudulent advertising and paid-for ‘reviews’, and their dubious marketing practises, read this:

Further opinion on it and how to uninstall MacKeeper malware can be read here:

MacKeeper have recently said that the uninstaller from here:

    now works.

I have tried everything, I did a system recovery on my computer, reinstalled everything. I even reset my iphone 4S like if it was new, I erased everything. I made sure the USB cables are plugged in correctly. I used 2 different USB cables and nothing. All it does when I plug it in is charge like when I plug it in to the wall charger. Please help me, I don't know what else to do. I tried all the Mobile Device Driver options, and the Services option, and the Apple Mobile Device. I really don't know what else to do. I am not sure if the problem is because I charged my phone through the car today. My car has a USB port for USB cables like ones for iPhones and other phone chargers. Anyone can help me ? I'd really appreciate it, thank you.

  • Mouse only works when plugged into a specific USB port

Hello. I'm using a HP optical mouse that connects via USB plugin.
    HP PIN: 505062-001 Rev.A
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium SP1
It only has full functionality when plugged into a specific USB port on my desktop. I can't get it to work with any other ports or chained with a HUB plugged into the port it likes. All of my other USB devices work fine with those ports and my HUBs. The red light on the bottom lights up but the mouse pointer does not respond to movement and clicking the buttons does nothing either.
    1) I'm confident, that it's not a problem with the desktop hardware
    2) I'm confident, that it's not a problem with the mouse hardware
When the mouse is fully functional, it's displayed under Devices and Printers, in the Devices category as "USB OPTICAL MOUSE".
When connected with the other ports or through a HUB, it appears as TWO entries in the Devices category:  "HID-compliant mouse" and - here's the suspicious part - "HID-compliant keyboard"
I suspect that something's up with the driver for the mouse. Any clues, as to which driver I need? Or, is the cause of the problem something else entirely?

    Hello Tick_Noby,
Your mouse only works in certain usb ports.
Has the mouse ever worked in the ports?
You can go to device manager and uninstall the fake keyboard and the mouse and restart the computer.
It seems that the driver is not correct for the mouse.
    Also reset BIOS defaults.
    Turn off the computer.
As you turn it back on tap the F10 key. This will load BIOS setup utility.
    Press F9 to load defaults.
Press F10 to save and exit.
When the computer boots back up, check to see if everything is working.
If it has not been to long since the problem started, you can run a system restore.
This will take the system back to when everything was working correctly without affecting your personal files.
Here is a link on how to do a restore.
Let me know how everything goes
    Have a good day.
