No wired connection during install

Hi all,
I'm trying to install arch on a new computer, but can't connect to the internet via ethernet. I must say I'm surprised. Could anyone help me with this ?
I did read the beginner's guide, the installation guide, and the wiki on network configuration.

(How do I redirect the output of dhcpcd and/or dhclient to a file? :B)
The most I could do was with dhclient and IPv4, I got a dhcpoffer once or twice, but it wasn't accepted, and dhclient timed out.
I even had no connection when I tried to add a static ip as described the wiki, but it was late, maybe I was too tired to think straight.
Thanks a lot for your help!

  • Can't get a wired connection pre install

Hi, I'm trying to fresh install arch on my desktop.
I am getting a little frustrated because I've restarted the process a handful of times today.

can anyone help me or point me in the right direction?
Like I said I am getting pretty frustrated and I might switch distributions soon
If you need more info about my system please let me know what it is, and where I can find it.
    Thanks for reading
I don't know why I can't connect. I have my ethernet cable running directly from my pc to my router. What is really bothering me is I was able to connect earlier and I was partway through the INSTALLATION process when I lost the connection. Every other internet enable device in my house is working.

Strike0 has a really good point.  The r8168 package provides a module.  The module matches up with a certain kernel version.  With Arch Linux the dependencies in the official repos are not versioned because there is the expecatation that users will keep their machiens up to date.
Unfortunately, I think that even if you just skip the dhcpcd part with a static IP as Strike0 suggested, you are probabbly going to end up with crippled functionality if using the r8169 module.  I'm not saying it is not worth a try, but it may end up that way.
The other option is to use the Arch Rollback Machine and find the proper r8168 package that matches whatever kernel version is on teh archiso.  The Arch Rollback Machine is sorted by date, so it is really quite easy to find what you are looking for by simply trying to find the date at which that particular kernel version is on core.  Then, staying in that date directory, just navigate up to the parent directory of core, and then go into community and find the r8168 package.  Then use that instead of the current one you have probably downloaded.
I do think that unless you actually need an additional ethernet card for some application, that buying another is probaly not the best route here.  Why buy something that you don't actually need?  I think really solving your problem correctly will give you greater insight into how the Arch repos are handled and maintained (version-wise), and maybe it might motivate you to actually do regular updates... if you weren't already.  I find it rather amazing how amny people come to these forums saying "I can't install package X.  I haven't updated in seven months, what could be the problem?"  If you are going to use a rolling release system, I can't even begin to understand why you wouldn't maintain your system... or why one would choose a rolling release in the first place.
OTOH, if you have some other practical application for an additional ethernet card once you are done... then that is a different story.

  • WRT55AG router dropping wired connection during setup

Hi, I bought a Linksys WRT55AG router yesterday after my Netgear wireless router gave up on me.
However, when I am setting up the router with the setup cd, it gets to around step 8 when it is searching for the router, but it keeps flashing that the network cable is unplugged, then it will connect, then it will unplug again. This keeps happening, so I am unable to get anywhere with the setup. It appears that the router is resetting itself as the lights all go off when it says it has been unplugged.
I know there is nothing wrong with the network cable or network card I am using, as I can connect directly to my modem without any problems.
This is really frustrating because I cannot easily access the internet without a wireless connection, and the router is brand new!
Please can somebody help before I pull all my hair out? I can't update the firmware either as I can't keep a good enough connection on the router to do that. Is my router faulty, should I send it back?
    Thanks
    Rob

i see. if after trying to use another power adapter, and then you have the same problem, try resetting the router by pressing and holding down the reset button for 30 seconds then power off the router for 30 secs and power it back on.
If you still have the same problem, you will need to reflash the Firmware of the router.
go to this link and it will guide you thru the process.:
How to Upgrade the Firmware on a Linksys Router
then, after reflashing or upgrading the firmware, reset the router again for 15 secs then, reconfigure it again.
    okies?
    hope that will help.

  • Linksys WRT54GS2 router won't install software, wired connection is partially broken

Whenever I try to install my included router software, I always get an "Error 302", which reads:
    1.  Exit the Program.
    2.  Eject the Linksys EasyLink Advisor Setup Wizard CD.
    3.  Restart your computer.
    4.  Reinsert the Linksys EasyLink Advisor Setup Wizard CD.
The fact that I'm making this thread should tell you that this isn't working. I Googled around to look for potential fixes, and one person said that the software may not work with Windows 7 (which I'm using), and suggested going to http://192.168.1.1/ and configuring it from there. Problem is, I have no clue what the login information for this is, since I'm running on a university network.
To add to my misfortune, plugging my computer (desktop) into the router's ethernet port cuts my internet speed down to a little less than 10% of what it would normally run at, with the added bonus of disconnecting every 30 seconds or so.
Basically, I would like to get my router in working order, so that I may use a secured wireless connection on my PS3 whilst using a wired connection on my PC. I cannot do so for two basic reasons: The setup always results in Error 302, and the connection itself can hardly stay stable.
Some information, if it's any help:
    OS: Windows 7 Ultimate
    Model: WRT54GS2-RM
    S/N: CUQ01J569884
My internet connection was in working order before adding the router into my setup.
I tried live chat support, which in retrospect was a pretty stupid idea since I disconnected almost immediately.
    Thanks in advance.

First throw the CD away, it is useless.  Connect via wired computer to 192.168.1.1 with username blank, password 'admin'.  Now configure your router manually like normal.

  • Why does HBO Go need to buffer during streaming with a wired connection?

I have Verizon FiOS with 75/35 Mbps speed. When streaming HBO Go with a wired connection programming is intermittently interrupted for buffering; Apple TV is connected to an LG flat screen through a Yamaha receiver via HDMI cabling. I had this issue while streaming wirelessly despite full 5 bar signal strength to Apple TV from the FiOS router.
Any thoughts? Software is up to date.

    Try rebooting your router.

  • [Solved] Wired connection ok but wireless problem on Intel 5100

Here is how i solved the problem :
1 - get back to the wiki doing everything in order
2 - added dbus in attition to hal in the deamon line in rc.conf
3 - put wicd at the end of the deamon line
4 - then configured wicd for my wireless network at boot : no more dbus error, and connection perfectly ok

Stab in the dark...the hal daemon should start dbus, but sometimes I've been encouraged to add the dbus DAEMON explicitly (before hal).
I don't really understand dbus too intimately, but I've come across situations where although dbus is running, I can't talk to it because the DBUS_SESSION_BUS_{ADDRESS,PID,WINDOWID} variables weren't visible in the environment I was working in. For instance, if dbus is started by xinitrc, and then some system-level daemon tries to talk to dbus, usually it fails for me, and I have to use some workaround.
Now I would expect wicd to be set up so that the ordinary user doesn't encounter any problems of this sort. On the other hand, the error you're getting does say that it's dbus communication which is failing. Perhaps you could try shutting down hald and dbus, open a terminal, su -, /etc/rc.d/dbus start, and then try from that command line to tell wicd to connect?

  • Losing wired connection randomly to some sites

I'm not sure whats going on all of a sudden with my connection. I've never seen this happen before.
It seems like everything is fine, then all of a sudden, I won't be able to get to google, but I'll be able to get to other sites. then google will start working 3 other sites I won't be able to access. Even weirder, I will be able to access www.somedomain.com but not dev.somedomain.com.
Also when this happens. I sometimes have problems with mail accessing whatever server I am unable to browse to.
And my ichat connection drops drops but unknowingly. Meaning my buddy list is still showing my buddies like i'm online, but when I type to someone it hangs and shoots me an error.
restarting will fix it temporarily but it eventually happens again. This started all of a sudden about a week ago. before that everything was totally fine. I don't believe I installed anything that would interfere and cause this.
Anyone seen this? My wifes PB is find during this, and FF on my machine also gets to the pages that safari is having problems with.
    Very weird. Any feedback appreciated!

Me again. Just figured out that if I turn of my Built-In Ethernet and use my airport on my G5 (to the same router), I have none of the problems above. It seems to only be the wired connection. Anyone else experiencing anything like this? Am I alone

  • WRT160N error during install

I just purchased WRT160N and during the install of LELA there is an error. " Linksys Updater failed to start- verify you have sufficient privileges to start system services" pops up during install.  Then it asks to retry and it hasn't worked or close window.  Then when says this "Setup for Linksys Advisor has failed "Fatal Error During Install" please check your settings and try again.
Help!  I am not computer savy, and don't want to start changing anything and screw it up.
Internet is working on the installed computer (I believe this is called the gateway? not wireless uses the ethernet cable)but I can't setup my wife's new laptop til this is fixed.
BTW this is a cable modem hook up if that makes a difference.  I have tried restarting, turning power off as well but still get the same problem every time.
    Thanks,
    Don

As you have mentioned that your Hardwired computer is able to go online throught the router, and now you are trying to setup your wireless computer. You dont have to run the setup disk on your computer, you can configure all the settings on your Router manually and then make your Wife's computer go online wirelessly..
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WEP, Encryption should be 64 bit.Leave the passphrase blank, don't type in anything...Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters eg: your 10 digit phone number) and click on save settings...
Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • Compile kernel module during install

I have an ASUS USB-N66 wireless adapater. I have verified that it works in Knoppix using the instructions here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1289702.
I would like to now compile the module during the Arch install process, but cannot run make. Is this possible? Is there an Arch image that includes make?
If not, would it be somehow possible to use the kernel module compiled in Knoppix during the Arch install?
    Thanks,
    Tim

I suggest you use a wired connection for the installation process and install all base-devel packages. Then fetch the pkgbuild for rt3573, patch the source, makepkg -si it.

  • Wired Connection problem on Officejet Pro 8500 a909a

I am having what seems to be to be a strange problem.
I have lost connectivity to my printer (Officejet Pro 8500 a909a) through the network from my Windows 7 64bit computer.  I found that it worked fine if I connect throught he USB port.  Today, I have been trying to get back to being able to use it through the network.
I am able to get to the configuration on the printer through the network, at http://192.168.0.105 and that works fine.
I have downloaded the most recent software and when I run it, it doesn't detect the printer, even if I enter the ip address in the advanced search box.
I have downloaded the HP Print and Scan Doctor, and when it runs, I can see the printer, however i'm not sure why it shows 2 lines:
When I choose the last line and press next, all it does is goes to this page:
    Your help is appreciated.

What operating system does the computer use?
What happens when you choose the network-wired option on that last screen?  Since the printer is already installed, the software thinks you are wanting to install the printer again and presents the last screen.
Your printer is listed twice with two separate IP addresses.  I suspect the issue may be that the IP address is changing to frequently for the detection protocol to keep up with it.
If the printer is on the network and you can access it by entering the printer's IP address in a web browser, you can try setting a static IP address for the wired connection.  Click on the Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection document from HP.  The document is for wireless connections, but the same steps can be applied for a wired connection by substituting wired for any section that designates going to the wireless section of the printer.

  • Wireless Works during install.... Does not work after install.

    Hiya!
I just finally finished semi-installing from live.  it's exciting.  I'm stuck at cli trying to get wireless to work.
it's really weird.  First-  I only have wireless (it's from my downstairs neighbors).  I used it DURING the install process- downloaded all of the packages, etc etc.
But when I start up my computer, I get a [FAIL] by network (it does not start up).   However, if i # ifconfig wlan0 up, the wireless turns on.
    iwconfig does not work
and I cannot scan for networks...
During install, I was able to see the names of every network.
There isn't any sort of password for the router I would like to connect to (and connected to before); it's just a linksys.
My wireless card is intel 5300 and I'm almost certain I installed the 5000 driver package.
    Thoughts?
Perhaps I should go to sleeeeeeep..

    Hi @KIP7,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand that your HP Envy 4500 will not print on a wireless network, and I am happy to help!
For further assistance I will need to know: If you are using a Windows or Mac Operating System, and the version number. To find the exact version, visit this link. Whatsmyos.
In the meantime, I would suggest to go through this printing guide. Print Jobs are Stuck in the Print Queue. As it addresses the fact that the printer will not print.
Hope this helps, and hope to hear from you soon!

  • Wrt54g, no wired connection, vista? update goblin?

Hi, I have linksys router WRT54G version 6.....its wired into my desktop and i have a wireless link to my laptop, and even though I got a new computer with windows vista home premiun a week ago, its been working fine for that week......until today, nov 14, when windows did an automatic update and install and automatically restarted my computer. since then the router doesn't work for my wired connection to my desktop, it links up with the network but not the internet....i havent' checked my laptop yet, probably the same.....I disconnected from my router and hooked directly into my modem to scour the internet for help...its all a blur but i did a hard reset on my router, thinking , i'll just reset it from scratch....my installation disk asks me for a password at the last second for some reason, don't remember that the first time, don't know what it could be either, i tried admin and left if blank, nothing, just kept restarting the installation. can't get to http://192.168.1.1/. either...... any ideas? thanks

Connect the computer to the router using Ethernet cable ..... check the LAN IP ...... if getting any valid Ip in the range of 192.168.1.1 ....try to ping the gateway address
If geting any reply try opening set up page of rotuer .....
If you are not getting any valid Ip .....do power cycle for 1 minute ....then once again check the Ip ....
If still it is showing invalid Ip ...... unplug the modem from router ...leave the computer connected to router  & reset the rotuer for 20-30 seconds ......
While holding the reset unplug the power cable ...wait for 10 seconds ...plug back the power cable & release the reset ....
Now once again check if getting any valid LAN ip address .....

  • Problem during install ECC5 IDES

    Hi all,
I've got a problem during install ECC5 on Windows 2003, MS SQL SERVER 2005.
    Here is the error message
    (DB) INFO: PCL2 deleted/truncated

    I've found a note 162266 - Questions and tips for R3SETUP on Windows NT / W2K
It said that this problem occurs when the data file is damaged during copying from CD or DVD. That make sense because our installation disks are copies made by DVD writer.
So maybe I should download those two files from service, right?
But I met another problem, I need SAPAPPL1.007 and SAPAPPL1.009. But on the website, export data are devided into 21 small packages. I have no idea which to download.
Are there anyone who downloaded these files before? Could you spend some time and tell me which are the disks I need.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    Login as <SID>adm -->goto <b>run</b> --><b>sqlplus "/as sysdba"</b> --> <b> grant dba to sap<SID>;</b> and check with the installation.
If it's not work check with the following SAP SAP Note Number 400241 - Problems with ops$ or sapr3 connect to Oracle.
