Nokia responds to reports about the N900 micro-usb...

Hi all,
we have just received the following statement from Nokia regarding the micro-USB port of the Nokia N900:
We are aware of reports that under certain conditions, the micro-USB port of a very limited amount of Nokia N900 devices can be detached. Product quality is of utmost importance to Nokia and we are investigating this issue further. Consumers who experience this issue should contact their local Nokia customer care. The same warranty applies to the Nokia N900 as with any other Nokia device. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

I wrote all my posts from 2005-2011 as an "Admin" for this community. I still work for Nokia as an external consultant, so my rank in all posts is now "Employee".

Thanks for your answer vandelay. In regards to getting in a second opinion, first of all there is only one repair centre near my location, and second of all I do not see the point of getting a second opinion in if Nokia hasn't passed out the word that the USB Port flaws have been acknowledged and that they should be covered by the warranty - the Repair centres will simply give me back my device without doing anything since Nokia hasn't given them updated instructions on how to proceed.
Also, my USB Port looks like I have "deliberately" ripped it off, so any engineer will refuse it and tell me the same unless Nokia gives out updates on the situation. I am really bewildered (and slowly getting really annoyed with this) by Nokia's approach: releasing a first statement that they are aware of the issue simply to avoid any resulting "**bleep**storm" is a poor tactic.
I sincerely hope that Nokia will soon clarify this issue and ensure that customers who have troubles with their USB Mini Ports get their devices exchanged/repaired ASAP. More details on the warranty only applicable "under certain conditions" are also needed.
This is my first Nokia device (coming from SonyEricsson), it has been a trip with more downs than ups so far, and the current situation is making me more angry and frustrated by the day, pushing me further away from buying another Nokia device ever again.
For the time being I will send Nokia.be an email (I have contaced nokia.co.uk where I bought the device almost a week ago: still awaiting reply, despite claims that a response will reach me 'within 48 Hours '.) and bring it to their attention. At the moment I do not think the Care Centres are at fault. I do believe that it's Nokia who still hasn't decided how to proceed and hasn't given out any instructions to the Repair Centres yet.

shauser

  • Nokia's price policy of the N900

Folks, in my mind the N900 is *far* too expensive. No doubt, developing such a device may swallow millions, but, for 500 Euros I get a 15" laptop or a netbook with a UMTS stick and flatrate, whereas Nokia offers a telephone with a small 3,5" display.... Being a Linux enthusiast myself I really love the idea of Maemo, but at such a high price? I really wonder whether it is not better to buy a laptop, put openSUSE Linux on it and a UMTS stick, more software, more possibilities, more apps. What would you guys say would be a reasonable price? In my mind between 350 and 400 Euros, 400 being the pain barrier.

    couple of points here:
    1.  when they announced the release of the N900 they immediately dropped the price of the N97 to not be above it.
    2. i dont think that the $600+ dollars in US is a big deal...but here is why
    for the general user/parent/advanced user
    you get a decent camera - $200
you get a decent video recorder - $200
you get a decent audio recorder - $100
you get a decent video player - $100
    you get a great pda - $150
you get a phone - $Free with activation but lets say $100
    you get your sms/mms
you get your social networks integrated - need a laptop for $300
    you get your mp3 player - $50
you get your full internet experience - use the laptop
you get your email - use the laptop
you get your office products (full versions will come for sure ie-word/excel/ppt) - use the laptop
you get your gaming (both new and nastalgae/emulators) - cost of psp/DS/etc with other limitations
you get your instant messangers - use the laptop
you get your gps and navigation - $200
    the list can still grow.
that alone is just $1400 not including the multiple cases and accessories for each, or the bulk you would have to lug around and it is all fairly instant, in the palm of your hand and fits in your pocket.
$600 doesnt sound so bad when you actually use them...actually, it's quite a deal...oh, and free software!
if you like this, kudo it!

  • Just 5 questions about the Zen Micro Ph

HiJust 5 Q's about that player which i hope i get clear answers 4 'emcan i buy the charger designed for the original Zen Micro 2 be used with this player? if not, is there an additional charger i can buy ?2) How much time it takes the player 2 charge from the USB port and how much does it take in case of using a charger?3) Can i simply plug the player in my PC's USB and boot up windows XP 2 see the player simply as an additional dri've without the need of any special drivers or programs so that i transfer files between my PC and the player with simple drag and dropping4) Can i transfer non-media files (books - programs...etc) using the same method in question 3 without having 2 set up first a dedicated space on the player 4 receiving such files (<--- This is the way which has 2 be done with the old Zen Micros)5) Any dedicated volume control on it yet or it still misses it like old Zen Micros ?THANKS A LOT

Hi Catherina - thx 4 the reply but yr answer implies that the old Zen Micro can be seen in windows explorer directly as an additonal dri've and this contradicts all the reviews i have read about that in order to transfer non-media files to the player, i have 2 either use the bundled program "Zen Media Explorer" or the firmware itself (in case i am not allowed 2 install software on some computer i wanna transfer files from or to) but i was speaking about plugging the player simply in the USB to be detected by XP, assigned to it a dri've letter and then i can start copying files from/to it right away without any additional extra software installed or anything i must configure on the player itself. IMHO, this is how the MP3 players should behave 4 extra simplicity and ease of use
SUGGESTION: can u plz make video clips showing how 2 use the player in all aspects. I have seen that with the iri'ver players where some people (i am not sure if those people are the guys @ iri'ver themselves or just some fans) have posted numerous video clips showing the iri'ver player in all aspects so the end user like me feel like he is using the player in his hands even if he/she hasn't purchased it yet - something that will be very effecti've on people's decision purchase. Wish to see video clips showing all aspects of the Zen Micro player and may be other players

  • Im confused about the zen micro firmw

First they say that they are releasing a new firmware which will reduce the sleep time of the micro from 24 to 4 hours... and now they are saying that they are retracting that release and redoing it... what's the deal with creative... it took a few months for them to release this firmware to begin with... and now they are saying that it doesn't work... and from the posts that I saw under the thread dedicated to the firmware... the thing doesn't even work... what's up with that... I just really want an educated answer that says something about the direction in which the firmware is going for creative... Beyond that... I read on the CNET website that the zen neeon is slated for asian only release... and on top of that they have released a new pmp called the vision I believe... what the hell is going on with creative's marketing department?

ok, the firmware is still available from the creative website. it has been removed (or was, it might be back) removed from nomadworld.com
for thoes it works for it works well but there have been a lot of problems with it. it does go into deep sleep after 4 hours but some are saying that it uses up even more battery than before. they are testing it like lots of ppl here are to try and find reasons and if they find a problem they will probably redo it.they may be redoing it anyway.
The neon was only released in asia because there are so many players in europe and america that they didnt feel it was needed. many people complain that there are too many players and that creative cant offer good enough support for the players it already has out.
i dont know about a new pmp

  • Questions about the zen micro leather case???

    hey everyone,
i saw the pictures of the zen micro leather case in the US store and was going to get them until i heard that the case is quite useless and annoying with the two-way flap open. Do you still think i should get them or a diiferent one(im DESPERATE to get one!!)
    thanks everyone.

There are several designs out there including... the flexi-skin (at Boxwave.com as well as eBay), Noreve's, Krussell's?and Vaja. It really comes down to what you want from a case. I've gone for a flexi-skin as I want easy access to the controls, and I kept my screen protector (but screen protectors are easy enough to buy).

  • Anyone used the eBay micro USB ro ligtning adapters?

Would be handy to have one or even two of these about. The official Apple ones are £15, and I might never use them to be honest.
I've seen eBay ones, unofficial of course and they are £3.50, they state unofficial, but quality.
Wondering if anyone used them? Could I damage my iPhone 5 using these?
Can someone recommend a particular one from Amazon UK ideally or eBay at a push?
I'm not bothered about it syncing, just charging. It would be handy to have in my wallet/pocket/car for using. Means I could then use a micro USB lead in the car
    Cheers

I use some of this.I can say the unofficial adapters are way not that good. But you can sync and charge your iPhone with it..
For the battery it doesn't matter wich adapter you use.

    Hi Larry Chen,
Did you install related USB 3.0 driver in Windows 7 computers? As I know, there is no built-in USB 3.0 driver in Windows 7.

  • 2 questions about the Zen Micro.. (firmwire & when 6gb ones come o

Hey guys! i oredered my zen micro monday (from creative 0-o) and its supposed to be here in like 4 days -_- (i could of got it from freaking newegg for 30$ less but i didint look)
    any ways! i was wondering...
. when i get my zen micro im going to update the firmwire but i dont know what version to get....
the 2.00.2 version that has microsoft playforsure or that .0.03 that fixes the sensitivity and battery issues...
does the 2.00.2 firmware already have the fixes that the older one has? or do i need to install the older one with the fixes fist and than the 2.00.2 that has microsoft playforsure thing..
    and
    2. Any clue when the 6gb zen micros are coming out? because if they come out this month im wondering if i can not open my zen micro when it gets here and send it back to creative (unopen) and pay the extra $$ that cost to get the 6gb version one
    thanks

. It has the fixes, but a lot of Users have reported issues with the 2.00.2 firmware. If you are absolutely sure you want driverless support and to use WMP0 you could try it, your choice.
    2. I'm guessing very soon for the 6Gb, as it was stated they would be released in January.

  • Q about the Zen Micro FM tu

    Hi!
I know that the FM frequencies in the states are different from the fequencies in europe. My question is this: if I were to buy a Zen micro in the united states and then bring it to Israel, is there a way to update the player to european tunning?
    0x alot for any help.

Are they different? I thought it was just Asia that had different frequencies, at least those are the two regions I remember seeing on the Micro, which you *can* change.

  • Another question about the Zen Micro Firmware Upgr

    Hi there,
I have just successfully installed the Creative Zen Micro Firmware .02.05 on my 5GB Zen Micro but I have a question regarding Windows Media Player. The Set up Sync button and some of the properties still appeared greyed out. I thought the upgrade would solve that problem.
    Any thoughts?

@OP: there is no content in your message, it's just begging. The title
of your topic contains two more or less informative words "PARSING codes".
My question to you is: what exactly do you mean by "PARSING" and
"codes"? Parsing context free (programming) languages? I guess
you're not talking natural languages here because your project should
just take a week to complete. Care to elaborate?
    kind regards,
    Jos
ps. and why "PARSING" instead of "parsing"?

  • Sorry about the x-post: USB connector lo

The USB connector on my jukebox has popped off the player's mainboard. The result, when I plug the cable into it the there is no connection so I cannot detect the device on the computer.
If anyone has any insight as to where I might get this little dilemma solved, let me know. I don't know if there is any way to just reconnect the USB connector to the mainboard, or if a new mainboard is an option, somehow.
The player works fine otherwise, I just cannot add, change access the contents of the dri've from the computer. I do have an IDE to USB connector device, if there any way to utilize that to access the files to back them up.
    Thanks
    Scott

Chances are it's broken away from the PCB, so it requires resoldering. You can either get it repaired by Creative, which you should definitely do if it's under warranty. If it's not under warranty you can still get it done as a paid repair by Creative, or you will need to find someone expert in surface mount soldering.
