Noob transition to AS3 question

Slowly learning my way into AS3, here is the original code that i am trying to move into AS3 from AS2. The function is to allow the mouse over state to stay selected until the mouse moves off of the selected area. Here is the AS2 code:
mc.onRollOver = function(){
mc.gotoAndStop(2);
mc.onRollOut = function(){
mc.gotoAndStop(1);
How i have changed it: This is where i need help
mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER)=function(){
mc.gotoAndStop(2); }
mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER)=function(){
mc.gotoAndStop(1); }
What am i missing with the code?

I tried this code, and got a duplicate error:
mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OUT, overHandler);
function overHandler(evt:MouseEvent):void {
     mc.gotoAndStop(2);
DId you define the overHandler function twice? That's about the only way you could get a duplicate error... I think you want:
mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OUT, outHandler);
function outHandler(evt:MouseEvent):void {
     mc.gotoAndStop(1);

  • Noob to AS3, Question

    Of course I don't expect anyone to write this whole thing for me, I just need a point in the right direction. If somebody could just get me started, and explain how I could accomplish this, I would be very happy.
    I have limited programming experience (but I understand the fundamentals), and I'm working on a Flash project in CS5. I have it set up where there are 16 text boxes, and a play button. When play is pressed, the Flash file should check the first text box, and check if one of about 10 different strings of text is present. If so, it should play a sound depending on which string is present. Then it should wait one second, go on to the next text box and do the same thing, and so on for each text box. Each text box would check for the same different strings, and each string would link to one sound.
    I'm sure this is really simple, but I am really new to this. Thanks!

    if your textfields are tf1,..,tf16:
    var tl:MovieClip=this;
    var soundObj:Object={};
    soundObj["textfield text"]="soundclass associated with this text";
    var tfToCheck:uint = 1;
    // set up your timer
    function soundF(e:Event):void{
    if(soundObj[tl["tf"+tfToCheck]]!=undefined){
    var SoundClass:Class=Class(getDefinitionByName(soundObj[tl["tf"+tfToCheck]]));
    var s:*=new SoundClass();
    s.play();
    if(tfToCheck==1){
    // start your timer
    tfToCheck++;

  • Noob with some iweb questions...

    Let me clarify - im not a noob when it comes to mac & computers in general, but when it comes to web pages, how they're made, & hosted etc i have no idea!
    I have been using iweb08 to make my web page for my business. Its turning out really well but there are a few things i'd like to know...
    1. Can i add any flash (or moving) menus? nothing too complex but i really like those menus that expand with drop down boxes etc
    2. My business is a DJ/entertainment business & id like to add some music (my own productions) to some of the pages. What is the best way of doing that?
    3. Protection: how do I make sure my site doesnt get hacked? how is iweb security?
    4. Google searches - how do i optimize my site to make sure it comes up well in a google search
    5. Any good tutes around that may answer these questions & more? Free is good
    thanks in advance

  • FlashBuilder and Flash AS3 question

    I'm heads down working with the FlashBuilder tool which is heavy AS3, and have used Flash CSx for years.
    My question: I'm assuming my AS3 skills that I develop with FlashBuilder will be directly applicable to Flash CSx, correct? I understand I'll need the context of applying my AS3 code to the Flash objects when working in Flash CSx but for the most part will my AS3 skills carry over from FlashBuilder to Flash CS4/5?
    Thanks in advance,
    Rich

    AS3 knowledge and skills has nothing to do with editors/IDE (which CSx, FlashBuilder, etc. are) per se. So, once you get your hands on AS3 - it doesn't matter where you write your code - it will work the same way in the final compiled swf. Nevertheless, there is a learning curve involved while getting to know new development environment as with any new software.

  • Noob D.I. box question

    hi all,
    sorry for the noob question, but i need something clearing up if possible. i was just about to buy a D.I. box and then had a query about them and whether i actually would benefit from one in this scenario...
    fig 1. is how i currently record.
    fig 2. is how i would with d.i. box
    my question is... in this set up, would the d.i. box make any difference to the signal? or would it only make a difference if i was going direct from guitar to box, to soundcard?
    thanks all for your help.

    As I see it you have basically three alternatives for recording electric guitar:
    1. Get a great amp sound, record it with a mike or several, in a good sounding room.
    Challenges: you will likely need a proper studio, or at least no neighbours, as this might get LOUD. Also it takes time and experience to mike an amp well, and even (several) expensive mikes. Result depends on room acoustics more than you think.
    Another route here, is to get/build an isolation box around your amp,  which will be a sort of micro studio for it, allowing you to play loud  and with a good tone, but in a more controlled envirnment. Many pros do  this. Unfortunateley, the outlay may also be 'pro' - but I'm sure there  are DIY solutions.
    2. Record the amp 'dry' via either its Line out (FX send will also do) or use a 'power soak which will allow you to turn up the amp (some amps sounds much better then), but with a low volume in the room. You can connect the soak device directly, or give the speaker the 'tamed' signal and mike the amp without disturbing the neighbours that much now. Good power soaks don't come cheap(?). Recording dry, i.e. using no mike, will often sound like that: dry. This depends on your musical style, but an electric guitar should probably be concidered as an acoustic intrument. Instead of a wooden membrane, it has a speaker. The sound we often want to achieve is of a good sounding amp in a good room, i.e. an acoustic sound. You simply can't get that from a Line output or from a power soak's direct out (no speaker). It will need some treatment.
    3. Use software like GuitarRig, Amplitube etc. No mike or setup needed, independent of size of room and its acoustics (except that room acoustics still will affect listening!!!). The software simulates amp, effects and even mic setups; adding the 'air' that you wont get with a direct connection. Again, depending on your style. If I was Bill Frisell or Jim Hall, i.e. anyone with a very 'naked' guitar sound as the main content of their music, I probably wouldn't do it (but these guys have access to great engineers too...), but in a pop / rock idom with other instruments blended in, and certainly for making demos, this is actually what I would recommend. Escpecially for us space challenged who have neighbours and not infinite time either. No, it will not make you sound like "everybody else"; it's garbage in - garbage out like always (many are disappointed by this, but some are glad it is still so)
    All you need is a soundcard with an instrument input. If you have a *good* soundcard already which doesn't have instrument input, you can concider a DI box. Otherwise I'd say it is redundant.

  • Two Noob Apple TV(2) Questions

    This is my first post. Im new to Apple TV and fairly new to Apple products and itunes in general. Here are my two noob questions:
    1. How do I play M2TS files on Apple TV(2)? I thought I read something about ATV2 transcoding on the fly, but my M2TS files don't show up on ATV at all. They do show up in itunes although the playback is choppy. Do I need to download a file converter and convert them to .mov or another format first?
    2. How do I get pics and movies I've taken with my my iphone into itunes? I want to view them on ATV, but only the pics have the airplay icon. I thought everything would move to itunes when I synced, but no dice. I downloaded "Im too Iphone transfer" to move the files from my iphone to my computer. It works and ATV can see and display them, but is there an easier way?
    Thanks in advance!

    AppleTV supports very limited video formats, and in practice it boils down to h264 encoded files.
    See specs here:
    http://www.apple.com/appletv/specs.html
    Neither iTunes or AppleTV 2 can transcode on the fly.
    Even if something plays in iTunes it won't be viewable on AppleTv 2 unless iTunes decides it's in an appropriate format.
    So for AppleTv 2 playback you need to convert/output files in h264 as per the specs, and at no more than 720p 30fps.
    Given choppy playback, are your m2ts files from an HD camcorder or other HD source? The chopiness implies your computer is struggling to decode the file in real time, so by extension will probably take ages to convert/encode to a suitable format (you could try right clicking the file and seeing if there's a convert to AppleTV option - but it is likely to take a long time and tie up iTunes).
    You might want to look at Handbrake if you want to convert files without any editing (not quite sure if it handles m2ts as I've not tried recently). If you need to edit m2ts files you'll need an appropriate video editor that can output h264.

  • Apple noob ipad2? - many questions, can you help?

    hi,  i have many, many questions.  if you could answer at least a couple and let someone else answer others, i would be so grateful!  thank you!
    i'd like to get an ipad 2.  i'm very crippled, disabled, and desperately in need of a *good* tablet.  since i am very very poor, it will be nearly impossible for me to do this.  first of all, is there any way for someone like me to obtain a new ipad;  a contest, a charity, anything like that?  i hate to ask, but i'm nearly quadriplegic and will be completely at some point.  i've tried some cheap tablet pcs and they were all horrible and returned.  i cannot afford the $329 for the cheapest ipad 2, so i surely cannot afford one w/ more storage.  i need to know if ipads are equipped w/ removable storage, such as a micro or standard SD card.  are they?  i would have to get the cheapest ipad 2 which i believe has 16gb of storage.  i'd want to be able to store onto an SD (or other) media or i will eventually fill up the space.
    i do see that it has bluetooth.  can i transfer apple files to a pc via bluetooth?  is that possible since my old, old, defunct, barely functional pc is running win7?  any pc i'd transfer to would be MS windows.  i will always save in a windows compatible format.  i just do not know if i can transfer files from apple to pc, as well as if i can transfer via bluetooth from apple to pc?
    i'm concerned about having to pay for apps.  i live way below the poverty line and have no friends or family to assist w/ anything - not that i would dare ask!  i'm on my own and this would be a once in a lifetime purchase that would have to last me "forever".  i heard an ipad user say something about the first gen ipad becoming "obsolete" and that you cannot upgrade an ipad;  you have to buy a new one.  is that correct?  if i could get an ipad 2 (i'd *love* the retina display but cannot afford it - so just the standard ipad 2), will it be useless at some point - a few years from now?
    are there many *free* apps?  such as, can i install a Netflix app to watch on the tablet for free?  or listen to a free radio app?  or is there a cost for *every* app?  forgive me, i have limited use of my neck and cannot hold my head up or use my arms much, so this post is all i can do.  i cannot go searching through available apps.
    bc of my physical disabilities, i am desperately in need of something extremely lightweight that will last me a very long time.  in addition to the cost of apps, are there any other operating costs, other than my internet service, for which i need to be aware of before diving into All Things Apple?
    if there are any charities or foundations that assist people, disabled or not, in obtaining an ipad 2, please give me link(s) and/or info.  due to my disablities and financial situation, a very good tablet is my only option.  i cannot sit up vertically at all sometimes, or if i can, for only a limited time.  i cannot turn my head to view a monitor.  ergo, i need something that can be used in a very reclined position.  that rules out everything but tablets.
    i *think* that SIRI would be a good way to do things via voice recognition.  i'm not sure of "her" capabilities, however.  is there voice recognition accessibility built into iOS?  i cannot always use my arms, so i need to be able to speak to do communications.  some of my doctors *only* communicate via their secure email service.  they will not accept calls to the nurses at all.  this is a huge problem for someone that cannot look at the screen due to its position, or type the email.  i really need voice recognition so i can communicate!  if it's not built into iOS, is it an app?  what price?
    i would also need the smart cover and a keyboard.  i have to have the stand, as i am unable to hold the ipad up - remember that i am in a reclined position at all times.  i would likely put the ipad w/ the cover as a stand on my knees (bent and upward), and then need a keyboard on my abdomen.  are the keyboards wired or wireless?  if wired, how long is the cord?  i would need about 2.5-3' in length to do this.
    i have an HDTV that was a gift (THANKS!).  does the ipad 2 come w/ a standard HDMI or other connection cord to connect directly to the tv?  or does one need to purchase "apple tv" or some other type unit to view and use on the tv screen?  (in which case, a keyboard w/ cord would not work, would a wireless keyboard work about 8-10' away?).
    if my old printer works, i will have to connect it to the old pc - running windows.  will i still be able to print w/ airprint, even tho the printer is connected to a windows pc?  very much need ability to print, especially for medical and financial concerns.  do not have wifi printer and cannot afford one.  will it work?
    can i use my google account and its settings - will apple sync w/ chrome?
    how much is the warranty and for how long may i purchase it for?  I would want the longest one.  i was able to see that it said you can make 2 warranty claims.  is this correct?
    can i upgrade iOS?  is there a charge for it, as in windows?  can i use other programs such as photoscape (freeware vr of photoshop) or another browser (such as dolphin)?
    does it have GPS?  may i use it at no charge?  i'm homebound, so this is not a big issue, but if i survive the many major surgeries, i *hope* i can get out again!
    i really need some help.  i cannot communicate with people!  i'm new to apple and do not know anything about these things.  please forgive me for the very lengthy post and so many questions.  any and all information would be quite helpful!  please remember that i *cannot* go searching around sites to find this information.  this post alone has taken over 2 days to write.
    thank you again, and i appreciate your time!
    tiff TIFFANYDW2 at yahoo dot com

    thank you so much IIP   glad to hear someone vouch for a refurb.  youre right, i cannot afford anything apple.  i was hoping to find a foundation that helps disabled ppl that need to communicate.  i really REALLY need to know if there's voice recognition in the iOS, or even a good free app....  idk.  as you said, i looked at refurbs and even the same model as the cheapest new ipad 2 was $400.  :/  only diff i could see *i think* was that it was wifi and cellular - and i only need wifi.  perhaps the reason the refurb was as much as the new w/ only wifi?
    prob w/ laptop pc - cannot use arms much, esp to pick up a laptop, and cannot carry one around.  even an ultrabook (which is a trademark) or other light weight is over 3lbs and i cannot do that.  i can barely do 8oz (for a drink).  ergo laptops are out.  ultras / light weights are way too expensive.  they also come w/ friggin win8.  the starting range of those are much higher than the starting range of ipad.
    i guess i'll have to look into a samsung galaxy 2 tablet, android, upgradeable, if i cannot find a way to get the ipad.  advantage of tablet pc over apple / ipad is big time w/ warranty.  so that is my 2nd choice, since the price just went down tonite actually at my WM.  (no lectures!  i have to buy there, cannot afford local biz's!)
    i'm using a laptop now, old one, borrowed, win xp.  i cannot move it at all.  it's soooo heavy!  i've not weighed it but would not be surprised if over 5lbs.  ergo my posts take forever to write and it's very hard for me as i cannot be in a reclining position to use it.  due to my spinal diseases, it's complicated.  i have to move around at least every 20-30min while awake, or 45-60min while trying to sleep.  not to be confused w/ mobility or ability to hold head upright/ at all, or use of arms.  spinal disease is entire spine now.  just found out that peachy news recently.
    so you see a laptop wont work.  i've spent months and months trying to find a laptop that i *could* use.  not possible.
    pro's of tablet pc:  less than 1/2 the price, and no q's asked, no charge, 2-3 yr drop/spill/anything accident or manufacturing defect.  will get one w/ android, upgradeable.  tons of free apps.
    cons:  much less performance, and nothing near the quality of ipad in any way.  even the cases are not as durable as ipad.  wont get anything w/ windows on it, so have to make sure it's an android.  many android models *do not* have VR (voice recognition) installed.  hard to find *free* *good* VR app.  have to use mSD card.  hard for someone w/ very limited use of arms and would have to mess around w/ that little tiny thing w/ messed up dexterity.
    pro's of ipad:  DURABLE, still unclear how long it'll last as far as upgrading iOS and available apps.  great OS and software/apps.  compatible in many ways w/ pc.  *better* features in all ways than tab pc.
    cons:  no idea if disability accessibility w/ VR installed or free app that is *free* and *good*.  price more than 2x as much as decent tablet pc.  warranty is crap.  i cannot afford it and it's only 1 yr and doesnt cover accidents.  have to buy more expensive compatible accessories like case/cover/kb.
    either way, i have to find help for purchase of either kind and accessories and prob good VR software/app.  at some point, i will be 100% quadriplegic and unable to communicate - that's an absolutey firm prognosis.  at this time i am 80% incapicated - meaning 80% of a 24hr period i am completely incapcitated.  i wanted to get VR set up on pc, but cannot sit, even in recliner, and look at monitor due to position of body and therefore having to turn head, hold weight of head on neck, and entire spine issues.  so i was going to set it up, as i thought i had no choice (which i wont have likely sooner than expected), and then i got laryngitis and had *no* voice at all for 35 - THIRTY FIVE!! - days!  been ~2+ mo now and it still goes out.  crazy!  advice:  if you lose your voice, SHUT UP or you'll never get it back.  i'm not kidding!
    so things arent working out well at all for awhile.  *shrugs*  such is life.
    this reply has taken me many trips (and hours) to the old laptop and i cannot hold my head up or use my arms anymore tonight.  so
    KING PENGUIN - i will have to read and reply to you tomorrow (USA).  sorry!
    thank you IIP!  tablet pc is back in my options.  that choice was just made a few hours ago when my "servant"  (lol, my bff, he's so sweet!) came by and went shopping for me so i could get some food!  yummy!  there are too many cons to tablet pc, but it appears, at this point, that it's going to be my only choice.
    k, my head's falling off!  i tell ppl i have a "dislocated head"  HAHA  and my mom thought i was serious.  :/
    THANK YOU!!!

  • Hard mathematics/as3 question.

    Hi all;
    I've made a 3D spherical gallery that builts itself solely by the number of pictures it has to contain, and spreads the photos even on the 3D surface.
    basicaly the final goal is to import an XML and convert it to array that will fill the sphere.
    I'f you're willing to help pleas give me your email here and I will send you the FLA because you need to see what I mean inorder to understand what im about to ask, all the code is in the first frame, I have several class for this but i've connected all the crutial parts together so you will get the point.
    the final goal is that the spacing between the pictures closest to you will be minimum 70px wich is the spacing you see if:
    var PhotosNum:Number = 150;
    var rad:Number=600;
    this.transform.perspectiveProjection.fieldOfView=115;
    the photosNum is the length of the photos array built from the XML.
    the rad is a number used to build the Sphere obj.
    the fieldOfView is a pain in the @#%! and the root for all my problems.
    play with these three values so that the sphere will always be in the size of the grey circle on the stage.
    What I need:
    well besicaly, a formula that will set the rad and fieldOfView to achive a good and clear spacing between photos by any parameters you decide to use.
    (PhotosNum, grey circle, width of single photo)
    for now treat all the photos as identical.
    if you need details on the function that spreads the photos to get the number of circles and number of photos in each circle let me know i'll explain it in depth.
    if the explanation/ request is not detaild or not understandble please let me know, sry for my english.
    thanks in advance for whoever chosses to accept the chalange

    Thanks Harm /
    I thought  you might be out there, 7 am here and I am just callin it wuits for tonight / another all nighter here.
    I just wanted to be sure it would have no impact down the road when I get to raid setup.
    Question about the Quadro drivers:
    On the CD they have drivers which I did not install at this point / they said they were some kind of accelleration drivers for CAD graphics work..
    Should I also install these ?
    Also:
    Did not install NVIDIA HD Audio Drivers thinking they might conflict with Premier or the Audio drivers for the Gigabyte UAD-5 motherboard.
    Think I would only need those if I were connecting to a HD TV Display and I wanted the audio to travel with those conncetions ?
    Any feedback on those topics ?
    Thanks Much !

  • Beginner Flex2 / AS3 question

    I am a beginner by all respects and have decided to develop
    an FTP via browser application for my company website in my free
    time. Before I buy a few Flex 2 and Actionscript books for myself
    and dive in, I figured it might be smart to ask the community if
    its even possible or recommended.
    Can you (should you) use Flex2 / AS3 as the basis for a drag
    and drop .ftp through browser application? If so, feel free to
    advise me on any Flex packages or methods to use as a basis and I
    can place emphasis on that in my learning.

    One thing I'd like to point out, generally I'm all for
    recreating something on my own but for something on that magnitude
    I'd suggest checking out this link, someone has already pretty much
    created what you need to accomplish.
    http://www.onflex.org/ted/2007/05/flexftp-ftp-client-in-flex-using.php
    obviously if your not using PHP you can change the server side
    around to reflect your needs but the source there has already
    tackled some of the major issues of a(n) FTP client in Flex. One of
    the biggest ones is with sockets you don't know when it's full so
    you constantly need to clear it. However if you were to use the
    FileReference classes (based on HTTP protocol) your going to need
    to configure your server to allow large buffer sizes for files to
    be uploaded as well as setup long timeouts. The other drawback is
    using sockets theres no way to create a true progress of what's
    been done. Just my two cents. Hope this helps.

  • Simple AS3 question

    in AS2 I used to load swf and send vars to the swf through
    the url like that:
    _root.loadMovie("myMovie.swf?name='bob'")
    how would i do it in As3
    thanks

    shikozel,
    > thanks David. first I have to tell you that I am a
    regular on
    > your blog. I really like it.
    Thanks! I like writing it and getting to know so many fellow
    developers.
    > how would you get this var within Flex application?
    Although I use Flex Builder fairly often and have tinkered
    with the Flex
    framework, I haven't yet loaded SWFs with FlashVars-type
    variables into that
    framework. In AS3, the approach would be the one I posted
    earlier, but the
    Flex framework itself may have some other way of evaluating
    the additional
    data.

  • Transition and logotype question

    1) I made a slideshow and imported it as a quicktime movie in FCP. Working fine, but at the end I made a motion clip with the logotype. When I try to insert a video transition between the movie and the motion clip it will not work. I also tried just to insert a normal image and make the transition but still there will not be a proper transition. Hard to explain but maybe it's just a simple explanation.?
    2) When I make a logotype in photoshop (png file) and insert it to cover the movie down in the corner, I can not make the image longer then 1.04.07 minutes. What am I doing wrong here?

    My bad.
    I totally forgot that FCP defaults to centered dissolves. It's one of my rants, and the short version is that I never use them for several reasons. But I'm guessing that you have one without, of course, realizing it. When you double click on the transition, let's say it's a dissolve, here's what you'll get, a diagram and choices of the event.
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/129533/centered_dissolve.png
    a dissolve that starts at the beginning of the event needs frames on the outgoing side. On the incoming side it already has all the frames it needs (unless your transition is too long).
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/129533/start_dissolve.png
    an end dissolve needs frames, again, on both sides of the transition.
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/129533/end_dissolve.png
    you can change the way the event works by clicking on the little triangles I've pointed out.
    You CANNOT have a transition longer than your footage. You do need to worry about handles. You've been fooled into a false sense of security by working with stills. They can be expanded to just about any length. Think about it. A still is only one frame in the first place. How is it that you can lay down several seconds of it in the timeline? The system just does that for you transparently. However, there is a limit, which can be changed. Your slide show is footage, actual video instead of stills. Same with your logotype animation. So you do have to take into account the handles and how the transitions will work.
    as an aside: the centered dissolve is a holdover from cutting celluloid by hand. It was easier for us (yes, some of us have actually done this) to work this way when building A and B rolls (hey, that's where B-roll comes from). The traditional video dissolve starts at a cut and proceeds from there. It was derived from the fact that on tape (yes, and a few of us here spent years doing this too) you had to do a "match-frame" on A and B rolls of videotape and then when the tape was rolling at full speed perform the transition starting at that match point. Early in the digital non-linear game certain manufacturers who will remain nameless (but start at the beginning of the Alphabet) thought it would be "cool" to act like "film" and used centered dissolved. The NLE systems that led the pack did not, but they were designed by editors, not software engineers (love 'em, I really do). When FCP came along much, much later, they must have thought it was cool to have centered effects. I'm betting that's what's biting you right now. Sorry for not thinking of that earlier.

  • Noob Window on OSX Question

    OK. Gaming on iMac G5... There are about a dozen games I am content to playing if I just keep OSX.
    However, I know that my Intel based iMac can handle Windows.
    1. Best win app for noobie (bootcamp or the others)?
    2. Can my mac even play newer releases stable (w/ ATI-1600)?
    3. Lastly, how stable has Windows been for you out there who have installed it (and do you use it for gaming or just...work?)
    Thanks guys, this is such a great community!

    1. Use Boot Camp to load Windows on your Mac if your intention is to play games.
    2. Yes.
    3. As stable, or more stable, than if you installed Windows on a typical non-Apple computer.
    Lastly, I'm slightly confused as to what computer you actually have... unless you have two iMacs.
    Do you have a G5 iMac, or an Intel iMac? They are two different computers.
    There's no such thing as a G5 iMac with an Intel processor.

  • Studying "programming in AS3" questions

    Hi,
    Looking at the code below, I presume KeyCode and ENTER are both values (or should I say property?) of the Keyboard class.   Bear with me, I'm new at learning AS3.  So far, I find it easier than learning Flash itself, but still I want to make sure I learn it right.
    function keyPressed(event:KeyboardEvent):void
    if (event.keyCode == Keyboard.ENTER)
    mainText.text = myGreeter.sayHello(textIn.text);
    The manual mentions (see below) that sample files come with it, but it doesn't say where those files are located.  Any ideas where they are?
    Working with end-of-chapter examples
    Like this chapter, most chapters in this manual include a significant end-of-chapter example that ties together many of the concepts discussed in the chapter. However, unlike the Hello World example in this chapter, those examples will not be presented in a step-by-step tutorial format. The relevant ActionScript 3.0 code in each example will be highlighted and discussed, but instructions about running the examples in specific development environments won’t be provided. However, the example files distributed with this manual will include all of the files you need to compile and run the examples easily in your chosen development environment.

  • Need help AS3 question

    I am programming a music game where there are five movieclips (acting as buttons) representing five notes of a piano.  When the user clicks on each one, they play a note.  I would like to know how I can program it so that if the user clicks a specific five note sequence, it will trigger an animated movieclip in the timeline.
    Example:
    Note_1 + Note_4 + Note_2 + Note_5 + Note_3 = Animation_movie
    I am using Flash CS4 and Actionscript 3.  I've searched everywhere for a posting on this and couldn't find it anywhere.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    I tried using the array command, I feel like I'm getting closer, but I still can't get it to work.  This is what I have so far
    ActionScript Code:
    var noteArray:Array = new Array(note05_mc, note01_mc, note03_mc, note04_mc, note02_mc);
    var buttonArray:Array = new Array();
    stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,musicsequence);
    function musicsequence(event:MouseEvent):void {
        if (noteArray.toString().indexOf(event.toString()) != -1) {
            buttonArray.push(event);
            if (buttonArray.toString().indexOf(noteArray.toString()) != -1) {
                // (This is where my event would go)
            trace("Hey, it works!");
            buttonArray = new Array();
    } else {
            buttonArray = new Array();
