North & south additional cooling

My mobo is a kt6v-lsr, im wondering when i increase my fsb do I need to take into account additional cooling, on both the northbridge and southbridge, i've heard that sata and sound abnormalities can be caused by southbridge high temps, also what about the mosfets?

I'd do a bing search for whatever it is you are looking for....

Not sure, but that might be the Rotate View Tool. However, that should only show up when the tool is actively being used (not just when it is selected). It could have something to do with multi-touch capabilities that the table may have (two finger rotation should allow the canvas to rotate), but that also shouldn't cause the compass to appear.
A screen shot would help verify what you are seeing.

  • Additional Cooling for QS 2002

Sometimes a friend of mine, who manages an Apple reseller, will get old Macs handed to him that are bound for the recycler. I have an arrangement with him that he'll email me if he gets anything that he thinks I might be interested in/be wanting a chance to scavenge before he recycles them. The other day the emailed me saying he had two G4 towers that I might be interested in so I went down to his store to check them out.
When I got there I discovered they were both QuickSilvers, one a 2001 867MHz single processor and the other a 2002 933MHz single processor. The thing that caught my eye on the 933 was that the video card didn't have an ADC port, but it did have DVI, VGA and an S-video port. Not a stock card, I thought and the S-video port was intriguing enough to warrant further investigation. I opened the case, wishing for a Radeon 9800 Pro, and when I eyeballed the card I still couldn't tell what it was, though I knew it was far too big to be a 9800 Pro; in fact it was the biggest video card I had ever seen inside a G4. So I popped the card out of the AGP slot and found that it was a BFG GeForce 6800GT OC. I also found I had a big grin on my face.
Since the card was resident inside a Mac QuickSilver 2002 I was ready to assume it had already been flashed for a Mac, but just to firm up my assumption I grabbed a magnifying glass and started to closely examine the pins. Sure enough, #3 and #11 pins were taped and my grin was even bigger…
An hour later I had both QuickSilvers home and was busily removing the 933MHz processor from the 2002 and replacing it with an OWC 1.5GHz Mercury Extreme processor which, up till then, resided in my GigaBit Ethernet G4. After transplanting the HDs from the GigaE and resetting the cuda switch I was ready to fire up the QS 2002.
The startup chime was music to my ears and shortly after I had video…the 6800GT worked/works like a charm with absolutely none of the pain, anxiety and neuroses that are associated with acquiring, flashing and taping PC video cards for use in a Mac…
My question is, what with the Mercury Extreme processor upgrade (the 7455 G4 is not exactly a cool running processor) and the 6800GT together in fairly close proximity, should I be concerned about/consider additional cooling for the QuickSilver and if so, how would I go about doing that as expeditiously (and cheaply) as possible?
    Happy happy, joy joy…

    Hi-
Did you remove the old CPU fan?
I did and have it here sitting in front of me though for the life of me I can't remember what I did with the screws…no worries, I'll find them…
I kept mine, with a 2 GHz processor in a 2002 QS, turning it around so as to exhaust hot air.
    It helps a bit.
    Great idea…never thought of that.
I was toying with the idea of replacing the 867MHz processor in the 2001 QuickSilver with the 933… Maybe not though…seems like too much work for such a small gain in processor speed and the CPU fan on the 867 may not be the same.
I'd like to install OS 9.2.2 on the 2001 QuickSilver and use it to play all the old Classic games that I've collected over the years. I have a Radeon 9000 Pro that I scavenged out a MDD with a bad mobo that I could put in the 867 QS. I'm reasonably sure the 9000 Pro is the fastest video card that will still support 3D Graphic Acceleration in OS 9.
Keep the 6800 clean. That's the most important thing with that card.
I examined the 6800 closely before I put it back in the QS 2002. It was in very good shape and looked like it was brand new out of the box. And clean enough that I would consider eating a meal off of it…maybe…

  • MSI P35 Platinum - No fans so no additional Cooling Needed?

    Hello,
With the idea of supporting a quiet but powerful system, I had intended to buy the MSI 875X Platinum, but I just saw the new passively cooled MSI P35 Platinum.    Can I really get by using the MSI P35 Platinum with no fans or additional cooling, running:
    -Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe Processor 2.4GHz, 1066FSB
    -4GB Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400 DDR2-800
-MSI GeForce 8600 GTS NX8600GTS-T2D256EZ-HD Video Card
-Zalman ZM600-HP HeatPipe Cooled 600w PSU
I won't be overclocking; I'd just like an updated, quiet system with power to spare; will be used for photoshop.
    Any other comments?  Thx.
    Scott

Good suggestion; I was unaware of the SilenX Fans, but I reviewed and get the idea--they are excellent for low noise applications, and this is exactly what I want!   Thx.
    Scott
For those who don't know the Antec P180/P182 has the PSU in a separate chamber at the bottom of the case so it can chuck the cpu's heat straight out of two 120mm fans in top and rear.   There is also a 3rd 120mm fan in lower chamber blowing onto the PSU.   All three Antec fans are fitted with HI-Med-Low switches.  I find Low to be good.
120mm fans push a decent amount of air on low RPM and are much quieter than 90mm.
There is room to fit two more of your own fans on the Upper HD cage.   One to draw air in from the front of the case and one that blows straight on the graphics card.  If you use both at once it creates a wind tunnel but means you cannot use it for hard drives.  Although you could just fit the front fan and have it blow across your HD.   I have my disks in the lower chamber to keep their heat away from the motherboard, and have done the wind tunnel option.
If I could change one thing I would have bought slower RPM  or adjustable extra fans because they are louder than the built in Antec fans.
    Hope this makes sense lol.
To be honest, you don't really need the extra fans if silence is more important, but my room is very warm and I plan to overclock.

  • North/South Orientation for Maps 2

    hello,
So i finally got a map for my area without downloading MapLoader.
    Now i have another issue.
When i using Maps 2.0 it has "north" as pointing up. but when i'm travelling South it is pretty difficult to follow map because the map updates at the bottom of the screen. When travelling north it's not a problem, i have the whole screen to look at as i drive.
is there anyway of switching this orientation depending on which way i'm travelling?

    Hi,
I have the same issue. Is there any method to view the map as if I were driving without starting the navigation?
    Thanks for any HELP!!!

  • Debug 03,04 Problems with North & South Bridge

So I just got a MSI MPOWER MAX and I'm getting the famous 03 post code. It seems to be going around with MSI boards and I can't figure it out. I've reset the bios, reinstalled windows, ran it with just the hdd, one stick on ram and the CPU. I've done CMOS flash, I've checked settings in the bios, I've updated all the drivers, I've checked all the power connects and even changed out the psu. What's left and has anybody found a solution to this annoying problem.
    CPU: 4770k
    Mobo: z87 mpower max
    Ram: 2x 8GB 1600Mhz RAM
    Psu: seasonic 750w gold
    Gpu: MSI 660ti

What problem do you have? As you reinstalled Windows seems as if it boots up fine. What should be this "famous" 03 post code "issue"?

  • Qosmios X300-156: Should I buy a cooler for the portable

    Hi.
Well I'm freshman here in your site :)
I have a doubt about my portable. I have asked many people reviews, but none was able to convince.
I have a X300, and unfortnely he had a breakdown on the motherboard.
I'm from Portugal, anda they sad to me that in Portugal they don't have the motherboard,
I have to wait until she comes from germany. This is desperate because I'm there three weeks without the portable.
Makes me think if its worth buying a laptop so expensive. If it were a normal portable Surely it would have.
But my question is this. Should I buy a cooler for the portable since it has been down twice due to temperature?
Some people say that i don´t need it and some people say that i should buy. Does it hurt to have a cooler in the portable?
Well thats all. Thank you, and sorry my english =|
    Regarts

    Hi
Usually an additional cooler is not necessary and in most cases counterproductive.
In your case its important that the notebook has been placed on the table and that there is enough free space around the notebook to assign good air circulation.
Furthermore you should use the Toshiba graphic card driver because such driver supports and GPU overheating protection. Drivers from ATI page or nVidia page do not support such protection as this could lead to GPU damage.
Its also advisable to clean the cooling fans and grilles from time to time its could be helpful to remove the dust using the compressed air spray.

  • Cooling Mods for iMac G5?

I have an 17" iMac G5 (original) and use it all day. I suffer from the constant fan noise as many users here do.
I've noticeed that later revs of the iMac have additional vent holes on the back casing to allow for additional airflow to cool the system better than my original model iMac G5 which only has inlet vents along the bottom of the case.
I'm wondering if anyone has modified their iMacs to allow for additional cooling and if it made the unit quieter. Hopefully, the mod doesn't involve physical modifications like cutting as my iMac falls into the range of serial numbers that are covered by the extended recall warranty for the bad capacitors.
    Thanks!

I totally agree with the "getting on the phone and complaining until the issue is fixed!" I did what alot of Mac-friends said couldnt be done. I had my iMac G5 replaced 2 months after the expiration of the waranty.
I had a rev A iMac G5 20 incher. Over the course of its first 11 months it had to be fixed 5 times. The issues, in order were-->failed inverter, failing optical drive, failing motherboard, failing power supply and finally the last issue i was having was a bad inverter AGAIN!
Now I know that they ( Apple) has issued an extension of the waranties on many of the first generation iMac G5s' but this one wasnt on that list. ( Supposedly!) But I was dilegent and wouldnt take "NO!" for an answer. They kept telling me that they would send me one more inverter and if that didnt fix it once and for all, they would then replace it the next time it broke down. I just couldnt or wouldnt do it that way. I mean, like I told the Apple Rep. I had had so many issues with this computer that I had begun to think that the machine had been abused before I got it somehow.
The Rep, had to call me back 3 times and kept trying to just send me one more part to fix it. But I just wanted out from under the darn thing after having had so many problems, and MAJOR ones at that! I remained calm the entire time, was respectful of what the rep. was trying to do but politely declined his offer saying that " I really just want my machine replaced, or maybe just give me my money back and I'll go elsewhere. " I explained " I am becoming concerned about the longevity of Apple products at this point! Maybe I'd be better off with a different manufacturer." It was at this point the rep. once more asked if he could call me back in 30 minutes. When he did, he said the new machine would be on the way. And not only did they replace the machine but they also replaced the 2gb of memory since my first gen and the newly availble rev c or iSIght iMac G5 used different memory. ( My 2gb of ram from the rev a. would be useless with the rev c. iMac G5.)
A long story i know. But its proof that sometimes you just have to stand up for yourself and let the evidence speak for itself. Sometimes you have to be patient and I really think that if you start cursing or insulting reps you wont get far at all. Just be calm, treat people as youd like to be treated and dont take no for an answer.
Anyway, this is a bit off topic but I wanted to relate it to anyone interested.

  • Simplest way to support additional displays?

I have a PowerMac G4 with dual 450MHz processors, and an ATY,Rage128 Pro graphics card that came with the system. I would like to support another VGA display. I have seen several questions on this forum with regards to specific graphics cards, and all of them seem to be about high-end graphics cards, like the ATI Radeon 9800 Mac, and may require additional cooling, etc.
I would be most grateful for advice on a functional, yet inexpensive PCI graphics card that I can add to the G4 to drive the second display. I do not feel comfortable flashing my own cards, and I live in the UK. Thanks in advance.
    VirginiaS

It the second display isn't needed for hi-res graphics and 3D acceleration, you can go pretty lo-tech on a PCI card. The old ATI Rage 128 Orion (a retail card) or its factory-installed equivalent, the ATI Rage Pro 128 (pulled form old blue and white G3s or PCi G4s) have 16MB of VRAM and a VGA port. Driver support is still present in 10.4 and may be in 10.5.
The downside is that you are looking for a used/pulled unit and must rely on the veracity of the seller's description to make sure you're really getting a Mac card. Many are AGP so you need to carefully determine that the card is PCI. I've seen these cards various places for under US$20. NOTE: Rage 128 Pro cards advertised as having 32MB RAM are usually for peecees, not Macs.
This one appears to be the right one.
The nice thing about the older cards comes if you still use OS9. The current PCI card, the 9200, does not play well in OS9, giving mixed results at best.. The ones I mention above normally are as happy in OS9 and they are in OSX.

  • Extra cooling needed for G4 MDD Dual 1.25 w/Radeon 9800?

I'm juggling graphics cards in my G4s. Some months back, I received a G4 MDD Dual 1.25 with a Radeon 9000. I migrated all my stuff from my G4 Digital Audio over to that, including my GeForce 4Ti card, and after some downloading of drivers, I was able to get the G4 DA running with the 9000.
A short time ago, I recieved a G4 MDD Dual 1.0 Ghz with a Radeon 9800 Pro 128M card (that's what the label says, anyway...). Two things were a little different, and they are what prompt my question. First, one of the PCI slot "covers" had been removed. This could simply be that the preior owner removed a card they needed for something else, of course. And second, there was rather a lot of foam (like for chair cushions) stuffed in places. I'm thinking that was to quiet the machine down.
So anyway, if I move the 9800 into my dual 1.25, will I need to "help" the cooling in any way? I'm thinking not, but since I've never dealt with these cards before, then perhaps there is common knowledge out there I'm unaware of.
Then, I'll have a G4/DA with 1/2Ghz Sonett processor & GeForce 4Ti, and a G4 MDD Dual 1.0 Ghz with Radeon 9000 to move on to new owners...

The Radeon 9800 is a warm card, but it isn't so terrible that the MDD can't use one.
The most important step for keeping the DP MDD cool is to enable Nap mode using CHUD:
    567DFEE3-A0A8-4602-9722-FCFCD76D8837.html
Another important task is to replace the thermal compound on the Radeon 9800.
The cards are all older than the thermal compound was meant to last.
    16196A0F-952B-47ED-A9F9-91F7B0ECA431.html
    and
    C874D84E-96DD-4DFF-9566-7C66BE065BB5.html
    Use Arctic Cooling MX-4.
Also use it on the processors to get additional cooling benefits.
Use of Nap mode and replacement of the thermal compound should be all that is required to avoid heat issues.
The following are all additional cooling ideas to consider.
The mention of a PCI cooler is a good one. Placed along side the Radeon, it can help to rid the case of hot air produced by the graphics card.
This one is good help with minimum noise:
    http://www.xoxide.com/thermaltake-cyclo-blue-slotcooler.html
The Radeon 9800 has a minimalist fan and heatsink.
The aluminum heatsink doesn't disipate heat as fast as copper, and the fans tend to bake out and fail.
Replacement with a third party cooler is a good idea, but the design of the MDD makes that difficult.
This little Vantec cooler is a good option for the 9800 in a MDD which has the memory slots filled:
    http://www.vantecusa.com/en/product/view_detail/95
If the memory slots have two 1 GB DIMMs installed in the two slots furthest from the graphics card, then this cooler is fine:

  • North bridge noise

    about the NEO2-S
this North bridges fan makes a hell of a noise, is he really nesseary if i don't overclock at all ? because in all later models MSI didn't put on a north birdge active cooling...
my machine is working intesively but no overclocking is being made.
i saw some threads about it here, but is there any official or something close to it from MSI saying this usless ( but sure is beautiful ) fan can be removed without any risk ?
    thanks

remove the FAN only, don't remove the entire heatsink!
MSI won't give you any official answer. The heatsink without the fan is sufficient for normal cooling, provided your chassis is well air-ventilated.

  • Time Capsule - cooling, place - few questions to other users

    Hi!
I just purchased 2TB Time Capsule (the newest model), and wondering how to take care of it (and make it's life longer, and more comfortable  ) - it stands on wooden shelf with about 5 cm of free space on each side, and about 8.5 cm of free space above it. Is it enough?
It's plugged into something like this:
I didn't connect it to the Internet - I use it only as a Time Machine.
Do you think I should buy additional cooling pad, and put it under the TC?
Do you turn off your TC during night, or while you leave your home/office?
Just asking because I've heard that there are some problems with cooling, and many machines died after one, and half year, because of heat.
    Thanks!

Put some feet under the TC.. a couple of pencils perhaps..
Then just keep your eye on the temperature.. or hand.. or even better a thermometer.. during heavy disk usage it will get pretty hot.. put your hand on it and feel how hot it gets.. it should not be more than very warm.. how to define that is difficult. but i guess it is more important, that it cools off again after the disk spins down.. and over time it does not get hotter. They have a tendency as they age to become less efficient and run hotter which is what I would track..
BTW open space is better than a shelf which sounds pretty enclosed. Active cooling is always a lot better than passive.. if it gets hot, get a netbook cooler and put it on that with spacers.

  • PCI Mount Cooling Fan Question

If there is any discussion on this in the forum I failed to find it. Is anyone using additional cooling in their G4 after adding or upgrading HD's, CPUs, graphic cards? I've found an Antec PCI slot cooler. It looks like it collects and blows air out the back. Is anyone using something like this? Does it work? My already overtaxed power supply makes me wish there was an cooler that used an external A.C. power option.

I just put in a new case fan and a new PSU fan. All is cool and completely quiet. [SilenX fans with rubber mount, purchased from East Luna they have many options (db and CFM)].
I have 2 HDD in right now, but have run 3, with no problems.
I would look at replacement fans before I went the PCI route. Unless sound level is not a concern.
