Notebook reliably locks up completely - cold restart required

I have a Fujitsu P7120 notebook. I bought it used several years ago and I love it, despite its age. It was very reliable and stable...but a bit slow. I decided to upgrade the stock 4400RPM drive with an SSD (http://www.kingspec.com/solid-state-dis … f-mlcj.htm), and that's where the problems started.
Honestly, I don't know if the problem is the SSD, but I never had this problem before.
Now, after powering up just fine, the notebook WILL freeze. I can't say when. Sometimes, it's just a few minutes. Sometimes hours. But always less than a day. It freezes hard. Only a complete cold restart will work.
It's VERY frustrating. The SSD is MUCH faster. It has given a new lease on life to this fanless wonder.
I've installed from scratch more than once, and did a complete fsck of the drive. None of it helps. Since this problem didn't exist before I installed the SSD, I suspect that this is the problem.
My install is a standard Arch install with X and OpenBox WM and Grub bootloader. I've read a bit about the new GPT partition table replacement. Might this help?
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Just wanted to add onto this that I have the exact same problem. I've got Arch (well, ArchBang - I'll be doing a plain Arch install soon to see if that's somehow the problem) installed on an Asus G73JH. Wonderful machine, everything works like a dream, except for it hard locking every now and then. Now, this baby has a 600GB 7200RPM HDD in it, so this problem might not be strictly related to your SSD - unless the causes are completely separate and unrelated, which is always possible. I'll try to get some more detailed information up here when I have some more time, but right now it's crunch time, and I just wanted to post a quick "me too!" while I had time.

I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.

    Dear Mr. King_Penguin,
Apologies in advance. I am an absolute newbie, and couldn't figure out how to "send" this other than checking your recent activity. I'm certain you get plenty "Thank you's". (This is another, -so please begin to skip here if the accolades are a nuisance!!) I promise that before I plague you w/ questions I will read as much as possible of what you've already "posted".
I've used IOS devices for years- yet I am still very much a beginner, especially searching for ways to utilize my devices to a "greater extent".  My ios phobias began when I was gifted an iPod; terrified using "iTunes" on PC laptop, certain that syncing specific things would result in loss of data, cold sweats when a new "IOS Update" arrived, shock horror and awe at the entirely foreign & colourfully creative world of "Apple Language". Today my sadly underused iPad (4th Gen.) froze. The first go-to "reboot" wasn't working and the only thing on the device I had access to was Siri- and we really don't get along or talk very often...  On June 10th 2012 (4:10am) you posted & responded to a query.  (A "soft-reset"?!! Brilliant!) That post, saved me from pitching all my devices into the bin, today-three years later. After wasting hours fiddling w/o hope, I dipped a toe back in to Apple.com "support communities". I found your post quickly. Not at all the case (for me, with my ingrained "PC lingo") in the past. So, I thank you one thousand times, I've no idea why there exist tech angels such as yourself, why you do what they do for free, w/ no obvious benefits or profit-but I'm a "follower" now. Apologies once more for posting this here- I will go back to the newbie section and try to figure out all the things I should know to avoid future etiquette faux-pas. Sincerest thanks!!

  • Firefox runs slowly or locks up completely

When I am on websites (many different ones such as Facebook, Yahoo mail, and many other sites that I visit) Facebook slows down to the point where it takes several minutes for a 'click' to register, or the program locks up completely and I have to force quit and start over. I haven't had this problem until I upgraded to Firefox 5.0. Now, it happens all the time. I love Firefox, and have always preferred it to other browsers...until this started happening.

Please give some details; what computers systems, what Firefox version?
Does this happen on some web sites , many?

Poke around safe web sites. Are there any problems?
    Then restart.

After power down and a cold restart, I automatically restart in my Administrator Account.  Running 10.8.4 with one Administrator account, one user account and one guest account.  Recently downloaded and installed 3rd party software (Panorama).  Installation required that I create a super user named Other with root privileges. I did so and successfully installed the 3rd party software.  I powered down a few days late and when I restarted, I went automatically to my Administrator account with no login password required.  I deleted the Other account, powered down and restarted with the same result - opened in Administrator.   I then followed the steps to disable root user, powered down, cold restart - same result, opened in Administrator account.
Any suggestions?  Any thoughts?  Much appreciate any help you might offer.

  • Restart Required?!?!

For the longest time one of the great things to boast to Windows users about was OS X's ability to install system updates without reboots. Why are most of the updates coming out requiring reboots? What gives?!

    Joe Raymond wrote:
I understand system file updates needing a reboot but lately even applications are needing reboots as well. Safari is an example.
Safari AFAIK includes some hooks into the system, as do some other apps.
Again, it's possible to stop a daemon or other running system program, update it and restart it. Many Unix servers do this to prevent downtime, but it is a complex routine and for most home users an unnecessary way to do it, since a home computer reboot cycle takes but a minute or two, whilst a Unix server might take a very long time.
A reboot every week or so should not be too bothersome. By my reckoning, the last update requiring a reboot was nearly a week ago.
In my case, I never install more than one update at a time, so if several apps require a reboot, I reboot once for each of them because I do not trust computers very much, and many times those who apply several updates at the same time experience issues.
I agree that reboots are not necessary, but they are not that inconvenient to most of us who do not leave our machines running 24/7 anyway.
For those who do not like the "restart required," they should simply install the updates before turning off the machine for the day, and the install will complete the next day when the machine is restarted, thereby not creating any extra restarts.

    1.  If you are really on iOS 7.1, you may wish to try upgrading to 8.1.2 which is the latest (basing this on your signature).
    2.  If updating the phone doesn't help, is this only when you connect to a specific wifi network?  Or all wifi networks (including public with no password)?  If it is ALL wifi networks, you may have a hardware problem.  Genius bar would be the next step.

The screen remain grey and a graphic just spins. I have left this happen for as much as 15 minutes without it openning the desk top. Hi Anythony ...
v10.8..2? Most reccent version of Lion is v10.7.4.
Use Lion Recovery to repair the startup disk if necessary, or reinstall the Mac OS X.

  • WIP over-completion increased component requirement qty

    Hi all,
In normal situation, produce 1 product just 1 component. So that we create a discrete job in ebs to produce 1000 pcs of product and the component requirement qty is 1000 pcs.
However, in some cases, factory can produce more products based on this components.
To record the actual completion, we use 'Over-completion' and input 1011 pcs of product to complete.
The ebs system automatically change the component required qty = 1011 pcs. It makes factory seems need to procurement 11 pcs more to complete the production. (it also affect the MRP planning).
Please kindly advise how to fix it.
    Best regards,
    Laurie

    Hi,
As mention "WIP over-completion increased component requirement qty" - yes, this is seeded functionality.
In Oracle, WIP Over completion qty is nothing but extra produced qty as per WIP job Qty. (ex. Job qty=10, total produced qty=12, i.e. 2 is over-completion qty)
Please explain expected requirement with example so that will figure out possible ways.
    Thanks
    ND

  • How often should the SMP server get restarted? Cockpit message "Restart Required!"

How often should I restart the SAP Mobile Platform server? I have received a message in the SMP Management Cockpit that states "Restart Required!".

    Hi Darrel,
Batish is right there is no need to restart server unless you change specific settings that need a restart. Ex. cache settings. You can find an "i" symbol next to these fields which need a restart if you change these values.
Also server restart is needed if you change any config files ex. admin-role-mapping.xml.
Are you able to reproduce this issue. Could you give a screen shot of this issue. What is the version of server?

  • Post 1.3.5 issues: App Installation problem - Restart Required (endless loop)

OK, so I've upgraded to 1.3.5 and that went well.  The problem now is that I can't install ANY application from the App Catalog.  Every time I attempt to install something the install fails and I get a message "Restart Required" to which I respond "YES" and the device restarts (looks like a luna restart, not a full restart).  However, I still can't install anything since I keep getting the same message.
Anyone else seeing this?  I'm attempting a full restart now (still in progress as of this post).

    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

The looping "Restart Required" message is apparently the result of having some Homebrew apps installed that don't quite have everything Palm expects. The process which is trying to move your apps to their new home barfs and gives up. When you try to install a new app, it trys again (with the same result).
The fix is to download the latest Preware and run something called the Emergency Migration Helper. This "fixes" the Homebrew app installs so that the Palm migration process can succeed. I assume you could also try removing all Homebrew apps, but the Prebrew  EMH fix is much easier IMO.

  • "Time Machine completed successfully", restart.   Problem - Does not boot?

Time machine is on an external HD - works fine. Installed a new 1TB HD into a Dual PPC G5 MAC. Used Leopard disk to go to UTILITIES - PARTITION - ERASE on the new HD. Everything looked good. I then RESTORED FROM BACKUP under UTILITIES. I did not reinstall the Leopard OS from the disc, since it was on time machine. Proceeded to restore and after two hours, I got a message that stated "RESTORE COMPLETE SUCCESSFULLY", restart computer. Took out the Leopard disc, restarted computer and that is where I experienced the following. PROBLEM: On booting, I hear the music; then get the gray apple; then get the gear going around for a few minutes; then black screen; then the process starts over again. It will just keep up this loop until pressing the power off. Got out the leopard disc. Went to UTILITIES - REPAIR DISC - "appears ok". Then REPAIRED PERMISSIONS - Warning - came back with four SUID files that were modified but not repaired. It stated that permissions were repaired. I look at the new HD in UTILITIES and it looks like 204GB of data is on it, which is from the restore from TIME MACHINE. Do not see anything that appears wrong. Any help would sure be appreciated as I am not sure what to do next.

Solved this problem differently than what I would have guessed. Did a lot of reading and it seems that I did everything according to how it was supposed to be done. Went back in and redid time machine and this took hours to accomplish. Used the Leopard disc again and ran into the identical problem. I decided to install Leopard and then I restored the time machine to the new hard drive. Nothing else I tried worked until I installed the OS. From there it was rather easy and it appears that everything is as it was on the original HD. I would still like to understand why restore did not work the other way. I'm on an iMac now but will be back to the G5 shortly. Good luck if anyone runs into this problem.
