Nube trying to create class in netbeans

My husband and I have missed class because of being sick. We are way behind on our lessons which began without us. I have done simple scripting and some visual basic but Java is way new to me.
We are using NetBeans for editing.
I would rather assume that I know nothing rather than confusing myself with odd bits and pieces of information from past programming days.
What I'm working on...
The textbook "Java how to program" 6th ed. by Deitel", gives the fig. 3.1 as:
1 // Fig. 3.1: GradeBook.java
2 // Class declaration rith one method.
3
4 public class GradeBook
5 {
6 // display a welcome message to the GradeBook user
7 public void displayMessage()
8 {
9 System.out.println( "Welcome to the Grade Book!" );
10 } //end method displayMessage
11
12 } // end class GradeBook
The program starts out after I select the template of Java Class by asking for a name to which I type in GradeBook then I select finish.
What is created for me is a class on the left and the code on the right is:
1 /*
2 * GradeBook.java
3 *
4 * Created on March 29, 2005, 8:47 PM
5 */
6
7 package examples;
8
9 /**
10 *
11 * @author mouthyturtle
12 */
13 public class GradeBook {
14
15 /** Creates a new instance of GradeBook */
16 public GradeBook() {
17 }
18
19 }
1. Do I just fill in the comments from here?
2. Do I save this before proceding?
3. Should I have placed this in it's own folder rather than within the examples folder where it is now created?
Mouthyturtle, turtle on a half shell.

I recomend you not use netbeans just yet and use a plain editor.
2. Do I save this before proceding?Unless I'm missing something, It would seam advicable.
3. Should I have placed this in it's own folder rather than within
the examples folder where it is now created?I'd create a folder for your projects to go into. But thats just me.

  • Problems creating jar in netbeans - Failed to load main-class

    Hi,
    I was wondering if someone could help with a problem I'm having creating a jar. I have a project in netbeans 6.5 and used Netbeans' GUI Builder (matisse) to create some of the UI elements in the project. I've tried many times to do "Clean and Build" to build my project. It builds successfully, but the jar that gets created gives the following error:
    "Failed to load Main-Class manifest attribute from C:\... filepath here...."
    I checked the manifest file, and that contains:
    Manifest-Version: 1.0
    Ant-Version: Apache Ant 1.7.1
    Created-By: 11.0-b16 (Sun Microsystems Inc.)
    I tried adding Main-Class: gui.MainGUI (which would be the class that contains my main function) to this file and tried running it again, but it then said "Invalid or corrupt Jarfile" when I try running it. MainGUI does exist in the Jar. I also tried with just Main-Class: MainGUI, same error.
    Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? In NetBeans, if you go to the project properties, Main Class is specified as "gui.MainGUI" also, so that isn't the issue. Additionally, I have Swing Layout Extensions and Swing Application Framework included in the added libraries (required for the GUI builder, I think).
    Thanks for any help.

    Try creating a new Java project and be sure to choose project type Java Application.
    Copy source code to the newly created project and try again.

  • Trying to create Netbeans Swing/GUI component

    Hello,
    I'm trying to create a GUI component from the following code. The main idea is to create a component consisting of a checkbox and a panel. The panel can contain several other swing components. By checking or unchecking the checkbox I want all by components in the panel to be enabled or disabled.
    The important thing is that this component should work in the Netbeans GUI designer. I'm using Netbeans 5.5.
    My problem is the following:
    When adding my swing component to the Netbeans swing component palette and dragging onto a new form, I cannot assign other components to the main panel of my component. Even if I use the Inspector tree to drag components to be children of my component, the mouse icon shows a denying icon.
    If I add swing components programmatically, it works.
    Can somebody give me an advice what I should change in my code to make it work with the Netbeans GUI designer?
    Below you can find the current code of my standalone component. It includes a main() method so one can give it a try.
    Many thanks in advance!

    Only one Bookmarks Toolbar is allowed. You can create Folders on the bookmarks toolbar (named "Sports", "News", etc.) and add or move your bookmarks to those folders.

  • I am trying to create a class diagram with jdeveloper but class is grey out

    i am trying to create a class diagram with jdeveloper but class is greyed out even though I downloaded the J2EE version
    I went through the following steps :
    Click the project in which you want to create a new diagram, choose File New from JDeveloper's menu, then select General Diagrams in the left pane of the New dialog.
    I have downloaded J2EE Edition Version 10.1.3.1.0.3984

    When the class diagram is disabled - does the wizard for creating a new class in the new->General also disabled?
    If it is then you are not placing your cursor on the project before you choose file->new
    (you are probably on the workspace that contains the project).

  • Yet another ALERT: Cannot create class in system package

    I've searched on the forums and seen several postings and none that really explained a solution, just the initial poster replying they fixed the problem. I am new to J2ME and java in general, I'm going off a book and my first test worked fine but this one gives me the the ALERT: Cannot create class in system package, when I select the GO command. The error occurs in the commandAction method where command == go trying to create an alert message. I am using MIDP 2.0 and as I stated new to this whole thing so a detail response would be greatly appreciated and what I need to do to resolve this for now and the future.
    Source code for TextBoxTest.java :
    import javax.microedition.midlet.*;
    import javax.microedition.lcdui.*;
    public class TextBoxTest extends MIDlet implements CommandListener
       private TextBox textBox;
       private Alert alert;

          // Setup the UI
          textBox = new TextBox("Enter Name", "", 20, TextField.ANY);
          go = new Command("Go", Command.SCREEN, 1);
          quit = new Command("Quit", Command.EXIT, 2);

          textBox.addCommand(quit);

                destroyApp(true);
                notifyDestroyed();
             if (command == go)
                alert = new Alert("", "Greetings " + textBox.getString(), null,
    AlertType.CONFIRMATION);
                Display.getDisplay(this).setCurrent(alert);
          catch (MIDletStateChangeException me)
             System.out.println(me + " caught.");
    }

    Ok so my problem isn't with the code it's with the build order. I guess I needed to state that I was following a book and trying to compile and preverify through command line and not using the toolkit or an IDE. So if I use NetBeans 5.0 or the Wireless Toolkit 2.5 I can compile fine.
    So my new question is, can someone show me the steps to build through command line? This is MIDP 2.0.

  • Create Class objects from an Array of File Objects

    Hi There,
    I'm having extreme difficulty in trying to convert an array of file objects to Class objects. My problem is as follows: I'm using Jfilechooser to select a directory and get an array of files of which are all .class files. I want to create Class objects from these .class files. Therefore, i can extract all the constructor, method and field information. I eventually want this class information to display in a JTree. Very similar to the explorer used in Netbeans. I've already created some code below, but it seems to be throwing a NoSuchMethodError exception. Can anyone please help??

  • Trying to create a flash gallery

    trying to create a simple clickable slideshow.
    my problem i think is in the math. but i clickable picture buttons on right and left. the center clickable too.
    i wanna know how can i increment decrement a variable depending on direction.
    currently it seems to go in one direction which is to the right.
    also can i make an array of functions: ex- function animate[count](e:event):void
    or do functions handle arrays differently.
    sorry if i sound stupid but its been awhile doing flash.
    heres little code:
    var picture:Array = new Array();
    picture[1] = new pic1();
    addChild(picture[1]);
    picture[1].x =50;
    picture[1].y =384;
    picture[2] = new pic2();
    addChild(picture[2]);
    picture[2].x =512;
    picture[2].y =384;
    picture[2].scaleX =10;
    picture[2].scaleY =10;
    picture[3] = new pic3();
    addChild(picture[3]);
    picture[3].x =974;
    picture[3].y =384;
    var counter = 1;
        picture[1].addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, animate1)
        function animate1(e:MouseEvent):void
            trace(counter);
            picture[counter+1].x =50;
            picture[counter+1].y =384;
            picture[counter + 2].x =512;
            picture[counter + 2].y =384;
            picture[counter + 2].scaleX =10;
            picture[counter + 2].scaleY =10;
            picture[counter + 3].x =974;
            picture[counter + 3].y =384;
            counter++;
    5 more similar eventlisteners and function

    Sorry I think I misread your code before when I responded. Well I think I have a working version of what you are trying to do. You can view what I made at http://www.jeremyseverson.com/as3/flash_gallery/index.html . I created this all in straight AS3 but it should give you an idea of what I did and give you some direction to achieve what you want.

  • On a tabbed panel, I am trying to create a form, but...

    On a tabbed panel I am trying to create a form, but I am having a couple of issues.
    The coding on my form is yellow - I can't figure out what is wrong. Also, I can't see the tab on the browser, only in live view. I haven't loaded it to my site as I haven't finished it yet. I don't want to go any further, until I solve the issues I have now. Any ideas?
    thanks,

    For demonstration purposes I copied a small amount of the text and changed the colour of what is yellow in Dreamweaver to this pinkish colour (I tried yellow but you couldn't read it)

  • Trying to create a form

    Newbie here. I am trying to create a form and have the information emailed to me. When I hit the submit button, it opens my outlook email. I have searched online and looked @ videos and am sure I have everything correct. What am I not doing? Thanks in advance.
