Numbering of subsequent chapters

hi. I am learning FM12.  I learned how to create a chapter title with numbering for the first chapter by creating this new format C:Chapter <$chapnum>
This formatted the first chapter correctly as Chapter 1.  However, I am not sure how to apply incremental numbering for chapter 2, etc.  When I attempted to apply my newly created chapter format (which i named Chapter Title) to my second chapter, it numbered it as Chapter 1.  What am I missing here?  Thanks,

Each chapter should be a new FM file. Use the Book file to keep the chapter files together in the desired sequence. Set all of the numbering and pagination properties at the Book level.
Hint: Don't use file names like Chap1.fm, Chap2,fm etc. because inevitably, some of them will move around. Use semantic naming like Introduction.fm, Overview.fm, Maintenance.fm, etc.

  • How do I get footnotes to continue their numbering from previous chapters in epub?

I have INDD CS6 and have been trying to export an EPUB from a book file with about 4-5 chapters,
    The problem is this:
I have footnotes throughout the various chapters and I want the numbering to be one single string (in other words 1-2-3-4-5-6-etc. no matter what chapter it is in...thus, not a restart of the numbering for each chapter).
Now I have it working in the InDesign files, so that if I made a PDF, I would get what I described above. HOWEVER: when i go to make an EPUB, i get the footnote numbering starting over at 1 for each and every chapter.
I have tried to force the number to start manually (i.e. in chapter three i set it to start at #6 footnote) And it reflects that it in INDD (and in the PDF), but when i go to export EPUB— no dice. Starts at one ...
SO if someone has an answer as to how to fix this in INDD, I would really appreciate it, since we teach EPUB classes to people and I like to have the best information for them. If this is an export bug, so be it, I would just like to find out one way or the other.
    Thanks in advance

well now three times the Canadian case manager has called me to say he had to follow the rules and call me and to say there is nothing he could do.
I think the problem may be that as the US parts is run from offshore - maybe India, the system is set up so that they cannot enter a NON US address - so they cannot send it here.
so HP are not sending the part that should have been included just because of how the HP Parts computer is set up
can somebody in the US please help?

  • Thumbnail Page Numbering in Acrobat 6.0

    Hi All
I have Acrobat Professional 6.06 patched on a win XP Pro SP2, core 2duo, 3gb ram, Dell optiplex.
When i insert extra pdf pages to a chapter of a pdf document the pages are knocked on in thumbnail view, if i delete the pages i inserted then all the chaptering is removed totally ruining the document. If the document is printed it reads okay with the numbering but in thumbnail view it is ruined and we need these thumbnail page numbering to be there for a customer.
    This is our procedure:
Highlight all pages to be numbered
Right click and select Number pages
    Ie. Numbering begin new section
    Prefix Chap 1 Page
    Start 1
    OK
On the final page of the chapter repeat above but:
    Chap 1 Page 9/
    Start 10
    OK
All subsequent chapters are numbered accordingly.
I now want to add some pages to Chapter 1 because of an amendment. Page 9/10 will become 9 and pages 10 to 13/14 will be added.
I insert 5 blank pages at the end of the chapter, then drop the amended pages on to the blank pages and renumber the thumbnails.
Any subsequent chapters and their thumbnail page numbering should not be affected. -- this does not happen the pages are knocked on
If I delete any page or extract and delete then all thumbnail page numbering disappears. --- This does not happen all chaptering dissappears and normal page numbering is in place.
Any hekp or advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I've never heard of the problem. But what I'd do is to figure out which of the source PDFs is causing the problem. Try recreating the combined PDF file by removing one page/section at a time to try to isolate it. It could be that that source PDF needs to be recreated.

  • Numbering pages differently in only 2 files in a book

I want to number the appendix pages A-1, B-1, etc. when the rest of the book is numbered sequentially. Is that possible? I can make it work in the file, but the TOC won't pick it up. How would I do this?

    Hi,
In the book window, have you right-clicked each FM chapter and set the chapter number?
Setting up <$chapnum>-<$pagenum> on the reference pages of your TOC is half the battle.
Next, right-click each chapter in turn and set chapter, page, and paragraph numbering. The first chapter you might set to "1" "Numeric," the first page you might set to "1" "Numeric," and the first paragraph you might set to "Restart Paragraph Numbering." But for subsequent chapters, pages, and paragraphs, you might choose "Continue Numbering ...."
    Cheers,
    Sean

  • TOC showing all chapters as #1

    Please,
How can I fix this TOC on my document, since it's showing every chapter as #1, as seen on the image below:
Only the Preface (6) is correct. The last one is labeled as '8' and all the chapters as '1'.
    Can someone help me, please?

Like Jeff says – check you page numbering. Here's a little more detail.
Select a chapter in the page thumbnails panel on the left-hand side, then open your inspector, click on the document tab (2nd icon), and select 'Numbering'.
Under the "Page Numbers" option, it sounds like you have all your chapter set to 'Start at:' with the valu set to '1'.
Only your first chapter (or where your actual page 1 appears) needs to be set up like this, all subsequent chapters have to have this set up as 'Continue numbering'.

  • Numbering Chapter Headings

I'd like to use a Heading style to label chapters, and I'd like to number the chapters, preferably automatically, so that when a new chapter is inserted, the subsequent chapters will adjust automatically. Each chapter, by the way is in its own section, with its own headers and footers.
I tried selecting the paragraphs with the Heading, adding list numbers, and then changing the heading style to accept the changes. And it works, except that all of the headings have the number 1. Is there a way to make them sequential?
    Thanks,
    Jim

    Hi,
When you're defining a list, make sure that the option is set to "Continue from previous" rather than "Start at: x" in the *Text Inspector>List*. Subsequently, in the Style Drawer, select the down-pointing arrow to the right of Heading and choose Redefine Style from Selection. It works on my machine, let me know if it doesn't work on yours.

  • Page Numbering (CS5)

Hi, I am working on a large file (200+ pages) and I got it to number using the masters, but I want page number 1 to start on InDesign page number 7.  I tried assigning pages 1-6 to another Master, but that didn't change my page numbers on the others.  I would appreciate any help.  This is my first time working on this large of an InDesign project (a book) and I'm trying to get it out the door and under my feet

Because this is your first time working with InDesign, this may be more information than you need or want, but you should check out the Book function. It allows you to make a long document out of several shorter documents (chapters), and will add or change the section starts dynamically. For example, if you have four 16-page chapters, the section start of the second will be page 17. If you then add two pages to the first chapter, it will change the section start of the second chapter from 17 to 19. In addition, it will change the section starts of any subsequent chapters as needed. It also lets you synchronize styles, so as to keep your work consistent.
If you are almost done with this book, maybe do the next one with chapters, so as to not overload yourself this late in the game.

  • Pages 5.0 and chapter numbering

    Hello,
Does anyone know how I could add automatic numbering to my chapters in Pages 5.0.
In "format" table I can see a numbering fonction but I can't set it in my header style.
    Any bug somewhere ?
    Thanks !

This is what I fond on Thomson Reuters' support page:
    Pages 5
We currently do not recommend using the EndNote plugin with Pages 5.
In addition to Mac OS 10.9, Apple also released Pages 5 (which requires 10.9), along with a new EndNote plugin.
The plugin that Apple released has many issues, including the inability to cite in footnotes, and issues with in-text numbering. We are in close contact with Apple about these issues and are hopeful that they will rectify the problems sometime in the future.
The plugin for Pages 09 does still work, so you may wish to rollback to Pages 09 if you need EndNote functionality in your Pages software. Older iWork programs may be found in \Applications\iWork.
As the Pages plugin was designed by and released by Apple, we're quite limited in what we can do to fix the problems. We definitely understand the frustration that many of you are experiencing with the plugin, and encourage you to contact Apple with your comments.
In the meantime, we will continue to monitor the situation and will be working with them closely.
So Apple should fix the problem!!

  • Different format for page numbers on different pages

    Hi guys,
Currently I'm about to finish my thesis. Pages has been a great help with everything, until now. The problem is that I want to add page numbers, but some pages should have a different numbering then others. To clarify here is my table of contents with the desired page numbers:
    -Figures          i
    -Tables          ii
    -Acronyms     iii
    -Chapter 1     1
    -Chapter 2     15
    -Chapter 3     27
    -Appendix     iv
    -Summary     v
So the stuff that is not directly main content should be numbered in roman numbers. The chapters then can have normal numbers.
I've been trying for a while to make this happen now, but without luck. Anyone know how to accomplish this? I would be very thankful.

Divide into Sections by inserting section breaks between and make the Roman numerals the first part and restart the numbering at Chapter 1:
Inspector > Layout > Section > Start at: 1 / uncheck Use previous headers and footers
To change the numbering format in the header or footer, right click on the page number and choose what you want.

  • Numbers suitable for xls files?

Is it possible to import Excel files in Numbers and subsequently work on them?
If not, which app should I use?

Numbers can import Excel spreadsheets, though Numbers for iPad cannot handle all the formulas and formatting Excel can. There is an FAQ page here that you should look over before deciding:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4067
There are other apps that can import and edit Excel spreadsheets. Documents To Go from Dataviz is one that is commonly recommended, and you may find others if you search the iPad forums for "Excel".

  • Linking Excel Spreadsheet to Numbers

I know how to place an Excel Spreadsheet into Numbers and subsequently save it as a Numbers file. Once the Numbers file is established is there a way to export data changes made while working in the original Spreadsheet in Excel direct to the Numbers file created without resaving a new file in Numbers ?

    Hi Lawrie,
Numbers has a different philosophy from Excel. I find Numbers has a certain charm with its small, discrete tables on a canvas, instead of sheets that are "oceans" dotted with "islands" of data. Numbers allows data input tables, "engine room" tables where the serious number-crunching happens, and "presentation" tables for results.
Happy Numbers, and thanks for the two gold stars.
    Regards,

  • Chapters won't stop and return to main menu

I am creating a DVD with seven chapters created in Final Cut Pro. I created Chapter markers and durations in FCP. DVD Studio recognizes and links successfully with the chapters I set, but the chapters don't end, they just keep playing through the subsequent chapters until the piece is over. At the end of each chapter I need the DVD to go back to the main menu.
Any suggestions of what I can do in either FCP or DVD Studio Pro?

they just keep playing through the subsequent chapters until the piece is over.
This is normal for DVD. If you watch a film you would want this to happen.
As you have been told you can set Chapter End jumps but the user will still be able to skip to the next chapter unless you control things by settying UOPs.
You may want to make a Track for each of your Vids in future. Look into Stories if you want other options like play all etc.

  • RH8 More Numbering issues

    Hi Everyone,
With RH8 I have so far been able (with the help of the Forum and the Peter Grainge website) to create new stepped paragraphs which can number consecutively even when other paragraphs are placed in between. Fine so far. Now I would like to find out how to have the ability to re-start the numbering further down the page so if I have multiple procedures in the same topic.
    For example
    Heading - Procedure 1
    1. text text text
    2. text text
    3. etc
    Heading - Procedure 2
    1. text
    2. text
    3. text etc
    Heading - Procedure 3
    etc etc
When I used framemaker previously I used to create a stepfirst paragraph style which always numbered 1, subsequent step paras numbered following the step first. As well as that one was able to interupt the sequence of paragraphs withoput adverse effect. This is kind of what I have in mind but I don't know how to code the numbering in the relevant RH8 dialog.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated...

    Hi there
Not trying to tread on Peter's toes here, but I know I'd have a hard time locating the icon. Perhaps this image will help to provide context.

  • New to InDesign: things I need to know before starting my 200-page book?

Hi there (second time attempting to post this; sorry if both somehow end up on the discussion page—this version is my most recent)—
I'd practically completed a 180-page cookbook—lots of photos and recipes, instructions and comments—in Apple Pages ('cause I'm on a Mac and Pages seemed pretty straightforward) when I realized that not being able to see the book in a facing-pages view was completely ridiculous.  So I'm trying InDesign, and already I can see that this is THE app for what I'm doing.  I purchased a hard copy of the InDesign Classroom in a Book 2014 book, which I'm slowly going through... but I'm so incredibly eager and going page by page is so slow.  I will keep going through the book, but in the meantime, would people on this forum mind making sure I'm starting off on the right foot?  (I don’t want to get too far along and then discover that I should have been doing things completely differently).
Question One:  Many of my pages will be for recipes, of course—name of the dish at the top (white text on a black background), photo below, and below that the list of ingredients and the instructions.  So should I create a Master Page just for recipes?  That would seem to make sense, as all of the recipes will be organized on the page in the same way.  But what about all the other parts of the book (Preface, Table of Contents, various pages of commentary, pages of photos, etc.) that are different from one another?
Should I create other Master Pages for other parts of the book?
Question Two:  given that I’m planning to have all the pages printed at a printing house, and then bound into book form… should all my ‘left-hand’ Master Pages leave an extra wide margin on the right (to account for the part of the page that’s bound/glued) and, similarly, should all my right-hand Master Pages leave extra room on the left?  How much extra room do I need for this?
Question Three:  I really don't know enough about InDesign to even know what other question to ask, so maybe I'm safest to ask this:  are there settings I should 'build in' now, so I don't find myself trying to do it later, when it's much more difficult?  As I say, I'm going to keep struggling with the book (so many lessons seem to have nothing to do with my particular project, but I know I have to keep plugging away).  I do want to get my cookbook off on the right foot though.
Thanks so much for any advice,
    Malcolm

Presumable the book will be divided into sections (chapters) to make it more accessible. (1) front matter – title page, imprint/copyright, TOC etc. these tend not to have pages numbers (2) Individual chapters – e.g. Starters, Main courses, Puddings, Drinks  (3) back matter e.g Index.
The simplest approach is to have page numbers on your master page with running headers – that is the name of the book at the top of the left hand page and the name of each chapter on the right hand page, and guides for the repeating elements.
Produce and print out a couple of specimen pages of the recipe pages to see how your design looks and how easy it is read/use and how you will allow in the design for short and long menu headings and recipes etc. Use paragraph, character and object styles in your design. You wouldn't need extra space for perfect binding, look at similar books of the same trimmed pages size to see what kind of margins they have.
The cover artwork should be produced as a separate document as it will be printed separately on heavier stock.
Check you have an economical page size for printing (talk to your printer) discuss the paper you might choose and how many pages in a printed section. Also what kind of PDF s/he wants.
