Linking Excel Spreadsheet to Numbers

I know how to place an Excel Spreadsheet into Numbers and subsequently save it as a Numbers file. Once the Numbers file is established is there a way to export data changes made while working in the original Spreadsheet in Excel direct to the Numbers file created without resaving a new file in Numbers ?

Hi Lawrie,
Numbers has a different philosophy from Excel. I find Numbers has a certain charm with its small, discrete tables on a canvas, instead of sheets that are "oceans" dotted with "islands" of data. Numbers allows data input tables, "engine room" tables where the serious number-crunching happens, and "presentation" tables for results.
Happy Numbers, and thanks for the two gold stars.
Regards,
Ian

  • How to open Excel spreadsheet in Numbers.

    Hey Kids:
I have trouble opening imported Excel spreadsheets in Numbers on my iMac.  I have Mountain Lion 10.8.2.  Previously I tried a demo of Office Mac that has expired.  When I try to open an Excel spreadsheet I get a message to buy Office Mac.  I've tried to put the demo application in the trash but I still can't open the Excel spreaddsheet and get a message that Excel is in the trash and can't open the spreadsheet.
    HELP!

In addition to what Niel said...
In the Finder, click on an Excel file (.xls) to select it, press command-I to Get Info.
In the Info window, expand the Open with...section.
Click the pop-up menu bar in that section and choose Numbers '09.
Click the Change All button below the menu.
Repeat with a current version (.xlsx) file.
    Regards,
    Barry
PS: Unless you have something vital that you're storing in the Trash, you might also want to Empty the Trash to get rid of the Excel trial that's expired.

  • Can I open an excel spreadsheet in NUMBERS complete with formulas?

Can I open an excel spreadsheet in NUMBERS complete with formulas?

Problem solved.  I find that the excel file I was trying to convert was an .xlsx version and when I resaved it as an .xls file, I was then able to open it in NUMBERS complete with formulas.

  • Automatically open excel spreadsheets with numbers

can anyone tell me is it possible to set numbers as the default application to ALWAYS open excel spreadsheets? each time i try to open an excel spreadsheet the computer starts up the trial office software. I then have to cancel and choose "open with" and then set "always open with" numbers.
Having just converted from Windows, I was able to set certain programs to always handle specific file formats, e.g. .jpg, mpeg, avi so I did not have to choose the program every single time i wanted to open a file.
thx., same goes for pages ,in lieu of word?

Select an Excel file and option-select (Right Mouse Button) and select Get "Info". See attachment below to set "Open With."

  • TS1702 Using Numbers app, can't copy excel spreadsheet into Numbers via an attached email document on gmail.  Apple instructions state that an "open in" tab should be available. Can't locate this command. Only "open in Safari" appears.  Using app on iPad.

USing Numbers app but can't copy excel spreadsheet attached to a gmail email into Numbers. Apple instruction state that you click on opened document and choose option to open in Numbers. Don't have this option, only an option to open in Safari. I need very complete instructions, I'm pretty new to IPad apps. Thanks!

    THanks, but no go.
when I open spreadsheet attachment, only option is in lower right hand corner-- a box with arrow. When I touch this icon it gives me a choice to open in Safari or Cancel. No white dots.
PLs be really basic with your response to me. I thought I am pretty computer literate but this has be baffled.
THanks. I'm sure there is something "simple" that I'm missing.

  • PC excel spreadsheet to Numbers on iPhone...will it automatically update via iCloud?

If I upload an excel spreadsheet from my PC to Numbers on my iPhone....then make changes to the document using my iPhone....will iCloud automatically update the original file saved on my PC or do I have to download it from iCloud and replace the original file on my PC?

So, I do download it to my imac, make changes, save and then 'move to icloud'.  But I don't see the changes when I open the spreadsheet again in my numbers app.
Seems to not be working properly.

  • Excel spreadsheet in Numbers.

    Hi.
Having problems getting an Excel spreadsheet to show in Numbers for certain fields. Specifically the day of the week information. Is it possible to show this in Numbers as words ie. Monday, Tuesday... etc?
    Thanks.

Numbers does not know Week Day, Month names, etc., formatted by the raw date data like Excel. Make sure that you send Feedback to Apple for this formatting option. See example below:
Also, look at some of the Templates to see how Apple works around this issue.

  • Linking Excel spreadsheet to input query

    Hi,
I have created an input query in IP. Users have requested to link their spreadsheets into the query as apposed to manully inputting data. Is there any way of doing this. The only way I can see is wrting a macro to poulate the input query. Has anyone come across a better solution.
    Thanks
    Rex

    Hi Rex,
the 1200 should be the numeric value of your reference cell. That is what SAP shows. It does not show the SETformula because amanual entry would delete the formula. Are you sure the link is lossed? Did you try to change the value again in the reference cell.
also note the formula is only showed if you clic on the cell otherwise NV is showed.
I haven't use this myself but came across this functionality during my BI IP course. There it is also noted that:
    1) you have to make sure you never type in values in the planquery directly (because then you loose your formula). Instead you need to reference to another cell which can be changed manually.
    2) it can not be used with calculated key figures
    3) also restrictions on your query: maximum one structure is allowed in the rows one in the colums and if applicable all other dimensions in the free characteristics.

  • Exporting Excel Spreadsheet from Numbers

How do you export to the .xlsx format? The choice now appears to only be the older .xls version of Excel. The only way I've found is save is to open the .xls in my 2011 Excel and resave as the .xlsx format.

No specific reason at this time to have to save it as xlsx. I see .xls shows Excel Workbook 97-2004 on Numbers and also as on Office for the MAC Excel's on the "standard" format list. Just seems like there was some reason .xlsx camre about. 97-2004 is sorta "old".
I've had no problem opening Numbers .xls and .xlsx spreadsheets and viewing both those on my iTouch/Dropbox. Haven't been able to open or import a .numbers spreadsheet from Excel 2011 though.

  • Excell spreadsheet Telephone numbers not recognised in Adobe Acrobat DC [iOS]

Before my upgrade to Adobe Acrobat DC on my iPhone, telephone numbers in a excel spread sheet was recognized by Acrobat Reader as such i.e. You would touch and hold the number, then a 'pop up' would appear that gave the option to 'CALL' or 'SEND A MESSAGE'. This function no longer works in Adobe Acrobat DC, why not?

    Hi Alex,
Please your other thread for my answer.

  • Why cant i open my excel spreadsheet in numbers?

It keeps telling me it cant open spreadsheets created later than Excel 97, but my version IS 97-2004,

If you are speaking of the encryption of Windows 7, then you don't. (unless you are running Windows on your Mac)
If you want to use it on your Mac on the native OS X, remove the encryption with your Windows machine, first.
If it is formatted in NTFS, you will then be able to read the contents natively, but not write to it. You can add an NTFS driver to OS X, or you can reformat to either Mac OS, or ExFAT, losing your existing data on that drive. I used to be a fan of some of the third-party solutions, but have since ditched them, as it takes continual maintenance to retain functionality with OS X updates.
What you have right this very moment is a drive very much married to Windows, with the expense of not much compatibility to the Mac.

  • Numbers will not allow me to edit an excel spreadsheet I have

Can someone please help me before I scream.
I have set up a spreadsheet using excel on my boyfriends computer as numbers would not allow me to produce the graphs that I required.  Long story.
Since completing the spreadsheet, I have saved it on a memory stick and also emailed it to myself.  When I open up the excel spreadsheet in numbers, some of headings and labels have moved.  I want to tidy them up, however, every time I click on the text boxes, or any other part of the graphs, nothing will happen.
I am trying to finish a dissertation and am about to scream as numbers won't let me carry out such a simple task.
After looking at the help pages, it states that excel graphs are compatible with numbers, but this doesn't seem to be the case for me.
    Someone please help me.
    Keeley

    Thanks SG
Its such a pain as my Macbook Pro only has numbers and pages, and my partner has word and excel, but because I'm completing my dissertation on my laptop, anything do on excel, which I then have to cut and put into my dissertation (completed on pages) throws it all out.
If only Apple and Microsoft would comply with each other, it would make my life a whole lot easier!

Hi and welcome to the forums!
    Origami?
You can transfer the excel spreadsheet in to a .csv file and import to Outlook.
Or use desktop manager (see link below)
Do you have these numbers on another device?
What version of Windows, Outlook, desktop manager etc. are you using?

  • Want to open an Excel Spreadsheet from a link.

I am working with financial website and it has a link to a Excel Spreadsheet already design to performa complex calculation.  Spreadsheet is in Excel.  Clicking on the link does not open it and I cannot figure how to get it to open in Numbers - any ideas.

    Hi Laura,
This note, from a cell in the Excel spreadsheet, likely explains the difficulty:
If you are using on older version of Excel, you may need to install an “Add-In.” On the Tools menu at the top of your screen, click Add-Ins. Select the Analysis ToolPak box, and then click OK. If necessary, follow the instructions in the setup program.
The add-ons in Excel's Analysis Toolpak are, to the best of my knowledge, not supported in Numbers.

  • Linking to specific cells in an Excel spreadsheet no longer working

I use RoboHelp HTML version 7 and just upgraded to MS Office 2007.  I have project that contains hyperlinks to specific cells in an Excel spreadsheet using the following syntax: <a HREF="../file_name.xls#cell_name">  (a tip I found on Peter Grainge's website).  This worked fine with Office 2003.
With Office 2007, however, the hyperlink opens the Excel spreadsheet to the first cell on the first tab regardless of the the #cell_name suffix.  I've tried the following with no success:
delete the .xls baggage file, convert the .xls to the newer .xlsx format, add the .xlsx as a baggage file, rename the hyperlinks to .xlsx (in HTML view), generate new output
same as above but re-creating the hyperlinks (rather than just renaming)
When I preview the topic, the hyperlink is active but does not open the spreadsheet (topic cannot be found).  In the generated output, the hyperlink is not even a hyperlink (just plain old text).
Another unusual behavior (I have no idea if this is related) -- before I tried to fix this, when the original spreadsheet (.xls) opened in "compatibility mode," it was not maximized in Excel's window.  When I used to open this in Office 2003, it was always maximized.
Does anyone know if the #cell_name suffix works in Office 2007?  Is there another way to link to a specific cell?

    Hi all
As I understand it, the "X" on the 2007 stuff signifies a format similar to a zipped format. If what I understand is true, it would seem to make sense that this would also somewhat preclude linking in the manner you are speaking of. It would be akin to opening a specific document after first opening the zip archive.
    Cheers... Rick
