NX7800GT 6 pin power plug proprietary?

I have an Antec case/power supply.
The power supply has a dedicated 6pin power connection for a PCI-express card.
The pins don't match up wit hthose on the video card.
I called support and they said it was a proprietary connector on the MSI card and to use the 6pin to 2 molex adapter.
can someone confirm this?  And WHY!????? not use a standard connector?
Does anyone know of a proprietary 6pin to standard 6 pin adapter?

Look at MSI:
Evga:
XFX:
etc.
They are all the same. The info you were given is just wrong.
Take Care,
Richard

Will my Platinum 975x run correctly using an older ATX 20-pin power supply? Please advise. Thank you, Rick

Also, does your power supply have a 4pin ATX connector or 8pin EPS connector (+12V)?  You may be able to supplement power to the 975X by using the 4/8pin JPW connector and the 4pin (molex) JPWR connector to make up for the lost 4 pins on the 20pin ATX.  But I'd really hesitate to go this route, even if you have a very minimal configuration with low power demands.
I'm more inclined to suggest that you just replace your PSU.  Whichever model you have, the 20pin ATX connector marks it fairly outdated.  There are many excellent PSUs available nowadays at very affordable prices.  There's a great thread in the Off-Topic Technical forum started by connlaoi with a list of PSU Recommendations.

  • How do I install a GPU that needs 6-pin power?

I am new to doing this, but I have a 2008 Mac Pro (3,1) that I am installing a GTX 650 Ti Boost (yeah I know cheesy name) into. So I need one of these booster cables for it because it has a 6-pin power input, and I'll buy one later. For now, I've seen guides where people take power from the optical drives for GPU instead of using the booster cable. Sorry, but I don't know the terminology here:
The card came with a wire that looks like a "Y" with 2 male 4-pin power cables, like the kinds that power IDE drives, going into one 6-pin cable that would go into the card. Do I have to plug in BOTH of the 4-pin cables from the optical drive bay into this "Y" cable for this to work properly? The guy in a YouTube video I watched did not, but I have doubts about that.
Here is what I have now. The "Y" cable I'm talking about is in it. I can't close the side of the computer. The computer is booting into Mountain Lion just fine and is not slow (unlike my Mac with the ATI HD 2600 card I used to have), but I tried a benchmark and did not get a very good score, so I don't know if I did this right.
Notice near the bottom-right the dangling 4-pin male cable. Only one of them is plugged in.
    Second part of the question:
Is it OK if I take the entire optical drive bay out for the time being, or will that mess with the airflow? The cable is BARELY long enough, and I can't plug in both of the 4-pin cables if I have the bay there.

The 6-pin Aux power cable has three 12Volt leads and three grounds. Your motherboard has two such connectors on it, but they do not look impressive as they do not have substantial plastic housings around the pins.
Reputable vendors SHOULD be throwing one in the box if one is needed, but these are not inherently Macintosh cards, so they may decide not to.
The 4-pin Molex for a DVD reader has One 12Volt lead and one ground. You may be able to get by with two, but getting the proper 6-pin to 6-pin would be much better.

  • Need DV6000 DC power plug specs

I need to replace a DC power plug that plugs into the 431446-001 or 431445-001 USB/Power Connector Board.
The 431446-001 provides the DC power jack on the dv6000 laptop.  I need the specs, a part number, or a source for the barrel plug that plugs into the DC power jack.
This connector is part of the external 432309-001 or –402018-001 power adaptors.  It is the plug on the DC out end of the adaptor.  I've tried looking up part numbers for the 432309-001, but cannot find a parts breakdown.
It is the smallest barrel connector I've ever seen.  If I had a micrometer that measured inside diameter and outside diameter, I could come up with the ID, OD and length, and possibly buy it from Digi-Key or another parts supplier.  Possibly I could estimate the dimensions, but I want a precise fit.
I've already replaced the 431446-001, and apparently that was only part of the connector problem.  Before replacement, I was getting no DC to the computer.  Now I get DC to the computer when the  barrel plug is held in just the right position.  A common solution is just to replace the external power supply, but I know that the connector is the only problem.
    Can anyone help?
    Tad Cook, K7RA

Well,  the dimensions  of that tip are 4.8 x 1.7 mm.  Can't find a dimension for the length.
The tip numbers for a targus adapter are L107 and 201.  The reason for the 2 different part numbers is because targus makes 2 different adapters that the plugs plug into different ways.
The price of a targus tip is around 14 bucks on ebay and the price of a new ac adapter for your machine is about 9 bucks on ebay.  If you do a search on ebay make sure you use dv6000, not dv6.  You'll get a monster tip for a dv6, won't fit.
You won't be able to adapt a targus tip coz the connector pins are recessed into the connector.  The tip numbers are just for your reference in case you still want to source a tip somewhere.  A company might be able to match a tip to those numbers.

  • 4 pin power supply

hello folks I am wondering what and why some mb's have the small 4 pin power supply for the cpu and others don't. I have two machines I have put together and one does and the other don't. Can't find the correct literature to satisfy my curiosity. please offer some insight.
    Thanks Paul

the msi nforce 2 powers the cpu of 12v and so has the 2x extra 12v feeds, and 2x earths
as the 20 pin plug has only 1x 12v feed
and 8a is the most load an atx lead should ever have
and as 8a is about a cpu load and the 12v does other jobs on the board they are needed
older boards ,and boards like the assus nforce 2 still use the 5v rail for the cpu
so dont need nor have it

  • Power plug

My late-2012 mini does not have the 3rd prong on the power plug.  What is the best way to safely plug into the wall?  I.E. grounding?  I'm in U.S. in a apt complex built @ 2004.  Is grounding something I need to be concerned about?  How is the mini 2 prong plug different from other electronics using the 3 prong plugs?  Thanks

The Mac mini uses an IEC C7 socket (female), and you plug in an IEC C7 cable (male) to whatever your wall socket uses.
As it only has two pins on the socket of the Mac mini it is impossible to use an earth connection. This is not a problem this model Mac is designed to work safely without a mains earth connection.

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
In the Late 2005 models, there is a 6 pin power connection for graphics card power. The connector is located along the top edge of the logic board, above the RAM slots, Shown Here.
The cable needed is like these:

  • K7T266 Pro power plug

Will someone please enlighten me on the use of the 4 pin power connection that is in the middle of the board. The manual says something about it being for a graphics adapter. However I have never known a card to have this type of power connection. My power supply has a 4 pin connector that fits the one on the board. Do I plug these two together?

    Hi,
Some boards have them, this board uses it to give the AGP bus some extra power.
And yes, it's the connector that comes from the powersupply with 2-black and 2-yellow wires.

  • Power plug input bent?

I have a brand new MacBook, and just now I couldn't insert the power plug.
There is a metal band U-shaped around the pins, kind of bent. It wasn't there before! Did it somehow come out of the innards of the computer?
The magnet attaches, but no power is being absorbed. Is this something for the repairs or can I fix it? Thanks for any advice!

Do not try and fix it yourself or you may void your warranty. Either take it in to a store or call Apple about it.

  • Magnetic power plug melting & failure

Both new "new improved" magnetic power plug (aluminum, cylindrical) and the older (white, plastic) plugs all seem to end up getting too hot and beginning to melt or fuse on the inside of the plug, which prevents the pins from moving freely. The outer two power-transmitting pins become stuck down and won't connect properly to the computer's power port. I've been able to fix them sometimes by carving out a little of the fused plastic around the pins with an exacto knife, but even after this, I usually have to bang the plug face down on a hard surface to get the pins out enough to make an often-sketchy connection to the computer.
This has happened to me on several computers, both Macbooks and Macbook Pros, albeit both of them are a little older, and on a variety of Apple plugs, some brand-new. The new metal barrel-style plug at times would get almost too hot to touch (until its plastic insides melted).
The problem develops over time and regular use; it's not been a problem when the power adapters are new, but it can start 3-6-9 months after I began using it.
Does anybody else have this sort of problem?
I've come to the conclusion that this is just a failed design, a victim of Apple's stupid fixation with seamlessness and perceived "elegance of use" (It was all elegant and lovely until I had to start banging the plug on tables in cafes, usually cursing the thing....).
It seems they are trying to run too much current through those tiny little gold pins and contacts, as well as whatever spring-loaded mechanism is behind the the pins in the plug (with no significant heat sink).

Normally this happens to no one.  The fact it has happened to both multiple machines and multiple adapters says either you are mishandling the wires unknowingly*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/frayguide.html
Or your power source is unreliable.    Some old house wiring can be really suspect, and I recommend using an APC surge protector in case you are uncertain.
Make sure the adapter in question is rated for the model in question.

  • Dropped Lacie 250 Gig -- Power plug broke off. Help!

It happens to the best of us. I accidently knocked my 250 gig Lacie Hardrive off my desk and it fell on the ground. The male power plug with 4 prongs broke off inside the female portion of the plug. In other words, the female part of the power plug in the Lacie drive where you insert the power plug is broken because the power plug prongs broke off the male power cord and are stuck inside.
I have no idea what to do. Can I fix this power plug? Can I pull out the metal prongs that are stuck inside the female part and buy a new power cord? Do I need to pull ou the hard drive and buy a new Lacie case? I appreciate your help in advance. I can't believe I did this and I am hoping for a good solution.

If I understand your situation correctly, you might be able to pull the broken pins out of the socket and buy a new power supply. I'm not sure which one you have, perhaps like this:
    http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=10735
Of course, something else may be broken inside from the fall, including the drive.
You can identify parallel ATA/IDE drives by a large ribbon connector on the end, plus the 4 pin power connector. Serial drives have the power connector and a small single wire serial connector. My guess, if you have the common LaCie silver drive, is that it's a parallel.

  • A/c power plug broke off inside machine--how to repair

my daughter's ibook g4 power supply plug broke off, it is inside the socket in the machine--what is the practical way to get this fixed, please?
    thanks--

Hi there and welcome to Apple Discussions!
Your question is not unique, as unfortunately some users have experienced
some mishaps with their DC line-in plug (and socket) and so if you can
get the broken piece out of the computer's DC-in socket, that would be a
good thing. Sometimes a visit to a full service Apple Store (official) where
a Genius bar exists, and you've called ahead for a specified time, a skilled
person there may be able to figure out how to remove the broken end.
Of course, a replacement power supply is generally needed, to restore
    the illuminated original plug with an identical part is almost impossible;
though I have read about people getting a generic plug and managing
to get the DC polarity correct (so as to not damage the computer.) But
the best fix would be to get a new replacement Apple power adapter.
Getting the broken "pin" section of the AC Adapter's DC plug out of
the computer is the larger concern; since the socket itself may be
damaged if this isn't done properly. Or it may have been damaged
by the action that caused the plug to be broken in the first place.
There are several posts in these Discussion forums, the iBook G4
    and G3 (white) and PowerBook G4 models use a similar power setup;
so finding replies already posted is not hard.
In fact, I replied to one such post and so searched back and found
the URL to a question and replies. Note mine is near the end of this:

And the quoted text in that post is from one of the links in the post.
(It is not mine; to clarify what appears to be an edited four letter word.)
The blue letters in the post are links to outside web sites; I am not
sure of the total validity of their content and they only serve to show
someone has tried some ideas and they may have had adequate
results from them; and that's about as far as I'd go. They're worth a look.
[Another set of posts (by user name) regarding this question
and out-of-warranty repair options, etc with the DC-in board

  • Buying power plug 40Y7662 (Japan) in Germany? (T520)

I am currently (and for the next 3 weeks still) located in Germany. However, I will be traveling to Japan for several months starting in October.
I do have an adapter for Schuko->NEMA-5. However, it appears that almost all power outlets in Japan are NEMA-1 outlets (i.e. 2-pin), while my German plug is 3-pin. Therefore, the adapter I bought is all but useless.
To remedy that situation, I tried to buy the Japanese power adapter for my T520. However, the shop only offers the German power plug (40Y7663), and I assume that ordering it from abroad would take longer than the time I have left in Germany.
Does anybody know a quick way to get my hands on the correct adapter?

The simplest solution for me would be to go to Media Markt or Saturn and buy an adapter from the German plug to the Japanese plug. I did this some years ago when being in the same situation as you with no problems.
If you don't want to bother carrying around the adapter, then buy a cable directly in Japan.
    My 2 cents
