Object count is different via linked server

Hi,
we have created one linked server in ms sql server 2003 from oracle 9i database. when I am checking the count of object in oracle database is different from the count of same object using linked server. Kindly help me in getting some work around on this.
Regards
Phani

Firstly try running the select statement from sql server database using the below query and verify the number of records,
select * from openquery(link_name_here,'select * from schema_name.object_name')
Once the above query is returning the correct number of records then create a view for the above query and then select from the new view.

I used this statement to execute store procedure on Oracle database via linked server. It keeps running and never ends.
However, if I run this procedure Begin [procedurename]; End; in TOAD, it completes in 10s.
This procedure is just simply to merge data between two tables.
Is there any bug or limit on SQL Server Oracle linked server? I am using SQL SERVER 2012 and Oracle 11g client.

  • Query via linked server to DB2/NT gives different results

I have a DB2 9.7 database I need to query. I'm testing from four separate SQL Servers.
    ServerA - SQL 2012 SP2
    ServerB - SQL 2012 SP1
    ServerC - SQL 2012 SP1 CU1
    ServerD - SQL 2012 SP1
I set up a linked server from ServerA. I run QueryA, and am happy with the results.
I create a linked server from ServerB. I run QueryA and get the message, "Error converting data type DBTYPE_DBDATE to datetime."
I did the same test on ServerC. It works fine.
If, inside OPENQUERY, I convert the datetime to a varchar, call it QueryB, it mostly works, but will be missing a small percentage of datetime values from that converted column when run on ServerB. If I run QueryB on the on ServerA, those missing
values are there. Same for ServerC.
At this point, I can think only that the main difference is the service pack and CU level. I can't find any documentation on updates that are relevant, but doesn't mean much.
Then, I did the same test on ServerD. ServerD is at the same SP/CU level as ServerB. ServerD worked just fine. Apparently it's not the service pack or cumulative update level making the difference.
My setup: On each server I loaded MS OLE DB Provider for DB2 Version 4.0. I used the same sp_addlinkedserver script with the same connection string on each server. QueryA and QueryB both used OPENQUERY. They were identical except for the CAST to varchar
for a datetime field. This CAST became a call to a function VARCHAR on the DB2 server in later tests with the same result.
Of course, the only place I actually need this working is ServerB.

    Steve

Sure, with some obfuscation and shortening.
On each server, (except the first where I had to figure it out), I went through the same process.
Load MS OLE DB Provider for DB2 Version 4.0 version 9.0.1390.0
Run the Create Linked Server query
    Run QueryA.
Only on ServerB has this been a problem.

  • Importing Data from MS Access into SQL Serevr 2005 via Linked Server: User-Dependent failure

I am operating an Express version of SQL Server 2005 on a Windows XP machine.
I have successfully setup a linked server to a remote Access (.mdb) database. With my user account (Windows authentication) I can retrieve and store data without any problem.
I have another user (apparently with same settings as my own account) that is always failing to get the data.
The Error message he gets is:
OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "TSU_Tmp" returned message "The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file '\\DSITSO-NT0001\Exchange\Database5.mdb'.  It is already opened exclusively by another

PS: it is run using an 'EXEC(String)' format as at compile time of Store Procedure the Linked Server is not existing and otherwise compile would fail.
We tried it with different files, in different locations. It always wors for me, never for him...
The files were not used by anyone else. The folder(s) where they were stored are open to "Everyone".
So I concluded it should be something linked to the User... :) But I really do not know what, as said apparently we have exactely the same setup in our Login profiles.
Any idea or suggestion is welcome.
    Thanks
    Luca

    Hi Luca Lentati,
According to your description and T-SQL statement, we need to verify if the download and install the Microsoft.Jet.OleDB.4.0 as a provider.
If the 64bit SQL Server is running on the server,  The error, the Microsoft.Jet.OleDB.4.0 is not support, I reommend you download and install the Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0 as a provider.
The error 7303 message indicates that the linked server does not have correct login mapping. You can execute the sp_helplinkedsrvlogin stored procedure to set the login information correctly. Also, verify that you have specified the correct parameters
    for the linked server configuration.
In addition, if the issue still exists, I recommend you copy the access file to local Server, and create linked server between them , check if it can run well. If yes, it means that
the account which SQL server uses to run the service does not have read/write access to that file share.
There is an article about configuring a Linked Microsoft Access Server on SQL 2005 Server , you can review the following article.

  • Sharepoint 2013 Reporting services not fetching data via linked server

We have a functional SharePoint 2013 farm in production with WFE (Server 1 , windows server 2012) and WFE ( Server 2 , windows server 2012) and SharePoint databases including report server databases on  (Server 3, which SQL Server 2012 on windows
    server 2012)
Kerberos Authentication is enabled and Windows Authentication happens. Claims to Windows Service seems to work correctly too. No double hop issue. The SharePoint Reporting Services seem to be configured correctly and Reports get generated as expected
    in the following cases.
     1. If data is being pulled from Server A (SQL Server 2008 R2 Server on Windows Server 2008), Report gets generated no issues.
     2. If data is being pulled from Server B (SQL Server 2008 R2 Server on Windows Server 2008), Report gets generated no issues.
    The problem:-
We have a view on Server A, which is fetching data from Server B. This report does not get generated. Gives an NT/Authority logon failure. Server B is created as a linked Server on Server A. The setting to run under users security context is checked.
If I execute Query Builder from Report Builder 3.0, the query on the view gets the data and data is displayed in the report for next 10-15 min but after that the connections gets lost or if the user logs out and logs back in, the connection is lost
    again.
Has some one experienced a issue like this? Can a report not work on a view getting data from linked server? Or I have missed  some thing really important.
    Any help is highly appreciated?
    cheers!

    Hi,
From your description, my understanding is that you got an error when you clicked System settings after configuring Reporting Services service application.
What size did you use for the memory? Please make sure the server has enough memory to run SharePoint and all services.
    In addition, please open
http://localhost:xxxxx/SecurityTokenServiceApplication/securitytoken.svc to check if there is something about this issue.
Here is a similar post about this issue, please take a look at:

    Hi mkrener212,
Based on my knowledge, You can retrieve single-valued attributes like "sn" (surname = last name) or "givenName" and "mail" and so forth, but the SQL-based interface isn't capable of handling attributes like "memberOf" with several values assigned to them.
So I'm afraid you'll have to go another way for this problem - e.g. find and populate the group membership in managed code.
What's more, this is the forum for Directory Services, you can go to the following SQL forum to get more professional help:

  • Connecting to a cube via a linked server

    Hi
I want to connect to a SSAS cube via a linked server. When I ran a query against the SSAS cube from directly from the SQL server it runs fine.
If however I run the query in SSMS from my PC I get
OLE DB provider "MSOLAP" for linked server "SSASServer01" returned message "The following system error occurred: .".
    Msg 7373, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot set the initialization properties for OLE DB provider "MSOLAP" for linked server "SSASServer01".
In the properties on the linked server I've defined an account to use for the connection to get round the double hop issue
Any Ideas why I'm still getting the error?
    Alex

    Hi Mr P,
According to your description, you get the error 7373 with message "Cannot set the initialization properties for OLE DB provider "MSOLAP" for linked server "SSASServer01"." when connecting a SSAS cube via linked server.
    Right?
In this scenario, based on the error code 7373, it points to the issue of MSOLAP provider, please firstly check the properties setting for MSOLAP. Make sure the "Allow Inprocess" is selected. You may also have other options selected depends on
    your query.
Also check if ports for your server (1434 and 2383) are listening proper locally and externally. Please refer to a similar thread below:

  • Linked server "LK_SERVER_NAME" was unable to begin a distributed transactio

    Hi,
I have two DBs namely MS SQL 2008 and ORACLE 11g. I need to transfer data from MS SQL to ORACLE using the linked server. I did the following,
I have a stored procedure in ORACLE as call_linked_oracle_procedure which needs to be called from the MS SQL server to transfer the data.
So the steps I did to achieve this is provided as a sample as follows,
    /* Creating a sample table */
    create table source_tab3
    id numeric,
    name varchar(MAX)
    GO
/* Creating a insert trigger for the sample table which calls the oracle through the linked server*/
IF OBJECT_ID ('dbo.source_tab3Trigger','TR') IS NOT NULL
    DROP TRIGGER dbo.source_tab3Trigger;
    GO
    CREATE TRIGGER source_tab3Trigger ON source_tab3
    AFTER INSERT
    AS
    DECLARE @output varchar(600)
    EXEC [dbo].[call_linked_oracle_procedure] @parameter1 =N'value1', @parameter2 =N'value2'
    select @output
    GO
    /* Insert a sample data */
    insert into source_tab3 (id,name) (1,'vijai');
    GO
Now when I insert the data, It give the following error
OLE DB provider "OraOLEDB.Oracle" for linked server "LK_SERVER_NAME" returned message "New transaction cannot enlist in the specified transaction coordinator. ".
    Msg 7391, Level 16, State 2, Procedure source_tab3Trigger, Line 11
The operation could not be performed because OLE DB provider "OraOLEDB.Oracle" for linked server "LK_ORACLE" was unable to begin a distributed transaction.
The things I did to solve this were,
    1. Enabled the MSDTC services (Distributed Transaction Coordinator is started ).
    2. Enabled the Network DTC access from the control panel, component services to 'Allow InBound' etc.
    3. My 'OracleMTSRecoveryService' is running in my services list.
Also, I have done all these where my machine where MS SQL 2008 is installed. Dono what needs to be done in the ORACLE server.
Also to note, that I am able to query the tables/procedure via linked server individually, but not able to do that within the triggers.
    Any tip is much appreciated.
    regards,
    Vijai

    Hi,
I made few changes in the SQL trigger code, and it seems to work. But not sure if its the right code. Any way I will leave my findings here, so others might get a tip for their tries,
If anyone know who my code is working, please leave a comment,
IF OBJECT_ID ('dbo.source_tab3Trigger','TR') IS NOT NULL
    DROP TRIGGER dbo.source_tab3Trigger;
    GO
    CREATE TRIGGER source_tab3Trigger ON source_tab3
    AFTER INSERT, UPDATE
    AS
    commit transaction;
    set implicit_transactions on
    DECLARE @output varchar(600)
    DECLARE @p_1 varchar(600) = 'EASYLINK51_EBS_MECH'
    DECLARE @p_2 varchar(600) = 'standard'
    DECLARE @p_3 varchar(600) = 'EBS'
    EXEC [dbo].[call_linked_sys_param] @p_1 =N'EASYLINK51_EBS_MECH', @p_2 =N'standard', @p_3 =N'EBS', @output = @output OUTPUT
    select @output
    set implicit_transactions off
    begin transaction;
    GO

  • Best way to Restore Database to create a new Database having different dependent objects like linked server names in the procedures

    Hi All,
Am creating a new test server by cloning the production server. Creating Dbs by restoring the production backup but wondering is there any best way to update the linked server names in open query of few SPs other than manual checking and updating.

It will not update the stored procedure rather it generates the scripts. You can validate and execute the script later.

  • Query a stored procedure that exec's a dynamic query. Error Linked server indicates object has no columns

I have a stored procedure that dynamically creates a pivot query.  The procedure works and returns the correct data.  Now I have a requirement to show this data in reporting system that can only pull from a table or view.  Since you can not
create a dynamic query in a view I tried to do a select from using openquery.
    Example 'Select * from OpenQuery([MyServername], 'Exec Instance.Schema.StoredProcedure')
I get the error back "the linked server indicates the object has no columns".  I assume this is because of the first select statement that is stuffing the variable with column names.
    CODE FROM PROCEDURE
    Alter PROCEDURE [dbo].[Procedure1]
    AS
    BEGIN
    SET NOCOUNT ON
    Declare @cols nvarchar(2000),
      @Tcols nvarchar(2000),
      @Sql nvarchar (max)
    select @cols = stuff ((
          Select distinct '], ['+ModelName + '  ' + CombustorName
           from CombustorFuel cf
           join Model m on cf.modelid = m.modelid
           join Combustors cb on cf.CombustorID = cb.CombustorID
           where cf.CombustorID > 0
           for XML Path('')
          ),1,2,'')+']'
    Set @Tcols = replace(@Cols, ']', '] int')
    --Print @Tcols
    --Print @Cols
    Set @Sql = 'Select GasLiquid, FuelType, '+ @Cols +'
    from
     Select GasLiquid, FuelType, ModelName+ ''  '' +CombustorName ModelCombustor, CombFuelStatus+''- ''+CombFuelNote CombFuelStatusNote
      from Frames f
      join Family fa on f.Frameid = fa.frameid
      join Model m on fa.FamilyID = m.FamilyID
      join CombustorFuel cf on m.Modelid = cf.modelid
      Join Combustors c on cf.CombustorId = c.CombustorID
      join FuelTypes ft on cf.FuelTypeID = ft.FuelTypeID
      where cf.CombustorFuelID > 0
        and CombustorName <> ''''
     ) up
    Pivot
     (max(CombFuelStatusNote) for ModelCombustor in ('+ @Cols +')) as pvt
    order by FuelType'
    exec (@Sql)

Then again, a good reporting tool should be able to do dynamic pivot on its own, because dynamic pivoting is a presentation feature.
SSRS Supports dynamic columns: Displaying Dynamic Columns in SSRS Report
SQL Reporting Services with Dynamic Column Reports
Kalman Toth Database & OLAP Architect
    SQL Server 2014 Database Design
New Book / Kindle: Beginner Database Design & SQL Programming Using Microsoft SQL Server 2014
Displaying and reading are two very different things.
#1) SSRS Needs a fixed field list on the input side to know what what to make available in the designer.
#2) SSRS cant read "exec (@Sql)" out of a proc, even if there is a fixed number of columns (at
least it can't use it to auto build the field list from the proc)
I use dynamic SQL in my report procs on a fairly regular basis and I've found it easiest to simply dump
the results of my dynamic sql into a temp table at the end of the procs and then select from the temp table.
Basically, Erland is correct. Stop trying to pivot in the query and let SSRS (or whatever reporting software you're using) handle it with a Martix.

    Hi John!
You cannot update an existing payment and link it to invoices.
You can only do the link during the Add operation.
This is true for DI server, DI and to B1 Application.
Once a payment is created it cannot be changed.

This package contains 3 package variables but the error stating that a package variable can not be set, pops up for the VarObjectDataSet only.  This makes me wonder if it is uberhaupt possible to set the value of a package variable
    of type Object.
Can anybody help me on this please ?

    Hi Visakh,
    thank you for your reply.
So, judging by your reply, not all package variables used inside a package need to be set a value for when run in DTEXEC ?
I already tried that but my package ended up in error (something to do with "... invocation ...." and that error is anything but clearly documented. Judging by the error message itself, it looks like it could be just about anything. that is why I asked my
first question about the object type package variable.
Now, I will remove it from the 'set values' list and try another go cracking the unclear error-message " ... invocation ...". Does an error message about " ... invocation ..." ring any bells, now that we are talking about it here ?
    Thx in advance
    Jurgen
    Yes exactly
You need to set values only forthem which needs to be controlled from outside the package
Any variable which gets its value through expression set inside package or through a query inside execute sql task/script task can be ignored from DTExec
Ok I've seen the invocation error mostly inside script task. This may be because some error inside script written in script task. If it appeared after you removed the variable then it may because some reference of variable existing within script task.

  • SQL Server 2K "Linked Server" to Oracle 9i Release 2 via "Oracle Provider

    Hi,
I'm trying to set up a SQL Server 2000 "Linked Server" to Oracle 9i Release 2 via "Oracle Provider for OLE DB". I have downloaded and installed "Oracle Provider for OLE DB Release 9.2.0.2.0"
My SQL*Net alias/datasource in tnsnames.ora works (It passes the test in "Net 9i Configuration Assistant", I can connect from SQL*Plus, and I can get a Linked server going with the "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle").
When I set up my Linked Server with Oracle Provider for OLE DB, I need to supply the following three fields (with description from the read-only field at the bottom of the "Linked Server Properties)
Product name: (The product name is the OLE DB data source to add as a linked server.)
Data source: (The data source is usually the name of the server or filename.)
Provider string: (This is the entire provider string.)
Here is my tnsnames.ora entry that works as described above (names may have been changed to protect the innocent)...
    PROD9I.XYZ.LOCAL =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = nn.nn.nn.nn)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = PROD.ora2.xyz.mno.com)
With every combination of values I have tried for these fields, when I try to use the Linked Server I get this error message...
Could not create an instance of OLE DB provider 'OraOLEDB.Oracle'.
OLE DB error trace [Non-interface error:  CoCreate of DSO for OraOLEDB.Oracle returned 0x80040154].
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Thank you,
    Daniel Jameson

    Thanks Norman.
Well, I've made it a step closer. I uninstalled everything Oracle from my machine and reinstalled the 9i stuff, including the Oracle OLE DB Provider. Now, after I set up the linked server, and I try to view the Tables or Views under the Linked Servers, I get this error message...
Error 7399: OLE DB provider 'OraOLEDB.Oracle' reported an error.
    OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'OraOLEDB.Oracle' IDBINitialize::Initialize returned 0x80004005:   ].
Does anyone have any idea what this is about? My other Linked Server using the same Oracle SQL*Net alias, but using the Microsoft OLE DB Provider, works fine.

    Here,
I have created a Linked Server Called Excel_Test And its working fine ( For Retrieving data from excel to Sql Server Database Table ) ...
I have written a Stored Procedure for inserting data , When i Execute that stored procedure it is inserting data to Table Which i have
    given.
And the data which is in table should be shown in the application,
But, Am getting the following error.
    Cannot
initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" for linked server "Excel_Test".
     Please help me on this.
     Thanks in Advance....

Even am able to retrieve the data from Sql Server management studio.
The same retrieved data should be shown in the application (Dashbord).
    Query : Select * from OpenQuery(Excel_Test,'Select * from [Sheet1$]')
Am getting the output excatly the data in the excel sheet.
But when am opening that application where the above data should be shown am getting the below error.
    Cannot
initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" for linked server "Excel_Test".
Is this error is because of problem in Dot Net Coding or in the linked server.
    Thanks in Advance.....
