OCS on Gentoo Linux?

Hello All,
Did anybody try to install OCS on Gentoo Linux? What is your experience about it?
Yes, I know, RH AS is the right OS.
Some people likes make things not in right way. And those guys move World. ;)

I am thinking about trying the same thing. I have been pulling my hair out for the last month trying to get the Singlebox Install running on a RedHat 7.3 server. The documentation on this product is deplorable, not to mention that RedHat is the absolute worst linux distribution I have ever seen. I now know why I dropped it in favor of SuSE at version 5.0 and why I dropped RPM based SuSE for Gentoo at version 7.2.
Why does Oracle certify their software for the lousiest most proprietary linux distros out there? The support contracts from the companies are great, if you want to go that route, but if I wanted to go that route I would pay all of the money and sacrifice all of the performance and go with Windows.
Corporations are ruining linux by embracing it and not understanding the fundamental ideologies that went into creating it, with the exception of IBM. A community help system where people are willing to help you as long as you're willing to a) ask for help, and b) work to try and find the answer before you ask. I dont want to pay for support, I dont want it for free either, I'm willing to work for it.
I am currently working on reverse engineering the package versions and dependancies of SuSE Enterprise Server 8.0 and I am going to build a custom Gentoo box with those packages. If you are interested in my findings and results let me know and I'd be glad to share with you and the rest of the world, unlike Oracle, RedHat and SuSE.
I'm also thinking about talking to the Gentoo developers and forums to find out if they're interested in hosting a forked branch of the distro, because the package dependancies are pretty specific from what I can tell.
I think it's great that world class software companies such as Oracle are embracing linux and supporting it fully, but they need to move away from the linux distributions that are poisioning the open-source philosophy. Oracle should, in my opinion compile on a more vendor neutral distribution such as debian, gentoo or slackware. Then release the package requirements and let the end user decide which distribution they want to use, not the other way around.

Simply the problem can be solved setting a different Java Runtime Environent Path inside the configuration files located in the DISK1 folder.
    The files:
    /tmp/Disk1/install/oraparam.var
    /tmp/Disk1/install/linux/oraparam.ini
    must be edited!
The Variable: JRE_LOCATION must be set with the new path or the Java Runtime Environment (Can be also the J2sdk).

  • Gentoo Linux and Microsoft Failover Clusters / Hyper-V

    Hello,
Hoping there are a few people on the boards familiar with running Gentoo Linux guests under Microsoft FailOver Cluster / Hyper-V hosts.
I have four Gentoo Linux guest VMs (running kernel 3.12.21-r1) running under the Microsoft Failover Cluster system with Hyper-V as the host. All of the Hyper-V drivers are built into the kernel (including the utilities and balloon drivers) and generally they
    run without issue.
For several months now, however, I have been having strange issues with them. Essentially they stop responding to network requests after random intervals. However, these intervals aren't a few minutes or hours from each other; more like days or even weeks before
one of them will stop responding on the network side.
The funny thing is that the VMs themselves on the console side still responds. However, if I issue a reboot command on the externally non-responsive VM, the system will eventually get to a stage where all of the services are stopped and then hangs right after
the "mounting remaining system ro" line (or something like that).
The Failover Cluster Manager then reports that the system is "Stopping" but the system never reboots.
I have to completely restart the HOST system so that either (A) the VM in question transfers to another host and starts responding again or (B) when the HOST comes back up I can work with the VM again.
This *ONLY* happens on the Gentoo Linux guest VMs and not my Windows VMs.
Wondering if anyone has hints on this.
    Thank you for your time.
    Regards, Christopher K.

    Hi ckoeber,
Hyper-V has support most of Linux distribution but not all because it’s have so many distribution, until now the Gentoo Linux not in the support list, you can refer the following

  • Gentoo Linux RotateEffect.java wont work?

I'm trying to run the TestEffect and RotateEffect code from the JMF solutions but it will
not run under Gentoo Linux with this error:
    java TestEffect file:bluescreen2.mov
    Video format: JPEG, 160x120, FrameRate=12.0, Length=3574
The input format is not compatible with the given codec plugin: RotationEffect@17653ae

    Unable to add customed codecs:
    RotationEffect@17653ae
    Error: Unable to realize com.sun.media.ProcessEngine@1319c
    Failed to realize the processor.
Gentoo installs with the Cross-Platform pack (not the Linux Performance Pack), and the code runs fine
on Windows. Is there any way I can fix this as my own Effects and Codecs will not run with the same error.
    Any help appreciated.

You don't have native libraries in your path environment variable. keep your jmf/lib in your system's path. that should solve your problem.

  • OCS V2 on linux "CREATE CONTROLFILE failed"

    Hello,
i'd like some help regarding OCS instalation on linux.
at first i tried to install OCS V2 on redhat 9.
added redhat-9 to "certified OSes", installer started, fixed issue with "-z defs", then hung on relinkink webcache ins_calypso.mk. (ignored) later running DBCA get message "ORA-01503: CREATE CONTROLFILE failed" (abort) "ORA-01990: error opening password file ..." (abort) "ORA-27037: unable to obtain file status" (abort) same error (ok) other tasks continues...
even tried OCS V1 singlebox version. the same problem.
later downloaded and instaled UnitedLinux 1.0.
some more issues about fully qualified hostname.
needed to set /proc/sys/kernel/hostname not only to hostname, but to hostname.domainname.
and the get the same error.
i cant find answers to my problems in OTN and Metalink.
    please help.
    Thanks.

also followed suse recomendations for Oracle 9i R2 install on SLES8 (920_sles8_install.pdf).
    updated kernel, downgraded gcc .
    and got the same troubles.
at first with hostname, later with ins_sqlplus.mk, and then at dbca "CREATE CONTROLFILE failed".
can it be because of fqhostname "ocs.as.local" ?
or any naming of oracle home "/opt/oracle/product/iasdb" , instance name, or instance name "infra" / "ocs_infra" ?
    i think i'm lost %(
    thanks for any help.

  • Installing on Gentoo Linux

    Hi,
I'm trying to install JRocket 8.1 sp1 on Gentoo Linux (kernel v2.4.23) with problems:
    1) I have to use "-mode=console" to force it process in console mode, otherwise it just hang there after extracting itself.
    2) When choosing the BEA home directory. I have to accept the default one "/root/bea" otherwise it hangs again.
    Regards,

JRockit 8.1sp1 is supported on the platforms described in this link
    http://edocs.bea.com/wljrockit/docs81/certif.html. Other Linux versions
    could work if you try.
I haven't seen the problem you are describing, maybe someone else in this
    news group has any input.

Any ideas as to how to resolve the forbidden error.
    Vipul Garg

    Hello Richard,
Thank you for the reply. I have not replaced the text in error report. The hostname is ocsserver. I am not purposely using the fully qualified hostname as I tried installing with hostname as ocsserver.matpl (matpl is the domain name set on my local Windows NT server), I was unable to access the RTC url from a local network PC running Windows 2000/XP. To check the capability of RTC I have to run the RTC url on a Windows based system. Hence I did a reinstall of the OCS 10g without a domain name in the hostname. Though in the network setting I find mshome.net as the DNS domain search path set automatically in my Linux server. I tried removing it but it automatically sets in. Is this creating problem? But after installation I restarted the server I was able to run all the opmn services of infra. Only that I was getting a forbidden page and for that I changed the password of PORTAL and ORASSO schema. One more thing I find unsual is that whenever I start the machine I find that the schema PORTAL is LOCKED(TIMED) and I have to unlock it, but it gets locked automatically once databse is restarted. Why is it happening?
I checked the entries of processes and they are 250 as per the parameter. And 35 is the value as per the count of v$session.
Please provide your valuable ideas in resolving the issue.
    Regards,
    Vipul

Hi guys I have Gentoo distribution and I want to install LabVIEW 7 on it I have tried but could not do it successfully can anyone tell me what do I need to have Lab View installed like if I need rpm etc, which ofcourse I do not have ,
    any suggestion will be welcome
    thanx alot

Perhaps needless to say, you do need a LabVIEW version for linux. A windows
    cd won't install on linux...

in the hosts file I have given fully qualiifed name as "nufastserver.local.nu"
Can any bosy help me in this problem. I have tried reinstalling the OS also but the problem is still there at the same place

I had exactly the same poblem on a red hat 64bit OS on the infrastructure install.
But while trying to start opmn manually (that is definitely not to do to solve the problem). I had the error telling me that the shared library libdb.so.2 was not accessible.
I did add the compat-db-4xxxxx.i386.rpm and then retry the check. Then all passed threw.
To note that the .log file from the install says definitely nothing about this and that just trying to start the opmn did create another .log that gave me the file problem.
Hope it can help for 64bit linux OS installation.

  • Anyone gentoo linux ? I seek for a good use flags set

I install funtoo (gentoo with the stage file from here) stage 1 on my box
The system is my notebook - a thinkpad core duo
Im teenager in the sense of things I need from it - to be fast and lightweight (at very least as fast as arch default minimalistic install), compatible with everything, capable of p2ping wireless when I skateboard with it, have all needed stuff inside but not be bloated (boot / response time), and be as cool as linux can be
I prefer KDE 3.5 desktop. No gnome. Some *boxes but i dont need full functionality in them.
I dont accept any proprietary stuff on the computer. I may accept a binary firmware file to be uploaded to a device (with a )  but strict 'no' to blobs etc
Things that are patented but implemented entirely in open source (like linux mp3 support) are considered free (there are no sw patents where I live)
Plz paste them here from make.conf
CFLAGS etc will be accepted and thanked too

What's the point?  Some proprietary programs are pretty good, such as Skype, Opera, Cedega, and others.  Open source is a good model for software development, but it's not the end-all-be-all of computing.
Also, what about computer games?  Those are proprietary, usually for good reason
I use open source cause i like it. To me heaving a 'clean' computer is kinda proof of concept that I can live my way and not depend on stuff I dont like
Some closed software I simply dont trust. This includes skype and some wireless drivers
If a friend of mine wants to talk with me via skipe I tell him to install any SIP client from the list in wikipedia
I have an intel ipw3945 wireless card in the laptop. I just did not install it. Now when there is at last a driver without blobs (except an image that is blindly uploaded into the card) I accept this
I really dont play any computer games. I didnt play them (except some old dos games) when I used windows either

  • Oracle 9i installation problem on Gentoo Linux

    Hi!
After setting up the useraccount for the required installation step I face on the bash console a problem with this message:

head: `-1' option is obsolete; use `-n 1' since this will be removed in the future

for any help, I would thank.

Simply the problem can be solved setting a different Java Runtime Environent Path inside the configuration files located in the DISK1 folder.
    The files:
    /tmp/Disk1/install/oraparam.var
    /tmp/Disk1/install/linux/oraparam.ini
    must be edited!
The Variable: JRE_LOCATION must be set with the new path or the Java Runtime Environment (Can be also the J2sdk).

  • Installing Sun Studio 11 on Gentoo linux?

I have been having problems attempting to install Sun Studio 11 on Gentoo. I emerge'd "alien", with the hope that I could trick the installation program into using it, but that doesn't work. I get all kinds of java errors (I am using sun-jre-bin 1.5 update 3).
Is there a way to actually get these various and sundry .rpm packages on the system? There seem to be an awful lot of them.
    Thanks!

  • Fonts on gentoo linux & cursor size

    Hello,
When starting jdeveloper from the command line, I get the following output:
    Oracle JDeveloper 10g 10.1.2
Copyright 1997, 2004 Oracle Corporation.  All Rights Reserved
Warning: Cannot convert string "-b&h-lucida-medium-r-normal-sans-*-140-*-*-p-*-iso8859-1" to type FontStructLooking in <javadir>/jre/lib/font.properties, I find this string, but with a parameter %d that is obviously expanded to 140.
In addition to this problem, but I believe in relation to it, all editing components (textfields, textareas, ...) have a cursor size that is almost double the size of the font.
U understand that this is very annoying.
Are these two problems related ?
What do I do to solve them (both).
    Thanks in advance,
    Boro

The strange thing is, I only have this cursor problem in java applets and applications.
The install manual talks about carets that are opaque, and gives instructions on replacing the standard java carets with oracle's, but this doesn't solve the problem.
(As far as I can tell, cursors and carets are often used interchangeably.)

  • Is United Linux supported by OCS?

I decided to start a new thread on this.
My main concern is that I want to test OCS on a supported OS. We would use the same OS we tested on of course for the production computer. From my understanding, Oracle will provide support down to the OS level if you use a supported linux operating system, RedHat AS is supported according to the install docs. If we HAVE TO use RedHat AS or ES then we have to use it. I'm interested in using SuSE Linux which is part of United Linux, we use it a lot at my company. I've spoken with a technical contact at Oracle regarding OCS and they said that United Linux is NOT supported yet.
However, according to SuSE they have Oracle certification for OCS:
    http://www.suse.com/en/business/certifications/certified_software/oracle/certified.html
There is some informatio about this on the following Oracle sites:
    http://otn.oracle.com/tech/linux/htdocs/oracleonlinux_faq.html
    http://otn.oracle.com/tech/linux/htdocs/linux_techsupp_faq.html
According to the above sites there is support down to the Operating System level for OCS on United Linux. Has anyone heard differently? Perhaps the technical consultant was misinformed?

I can't get to Metalink since I am not a paying customer yet. I'm trying to find a way to best test this. Is there any way I can get the tips for installing OCS under United Linux? Anyone else have experience installing under UL and know whether or not it's fully supported? Thanks.
