OCT 2013 Adding desktopfolder shortcuts

Hi,
When I add shortcuts in the Office Customization Tool for the desktop for Word, Excel, Outlook etc, I get the follow error message, please note that if I look at the preconfigured shortcuts for the start menu, they do not have a Start In folder specified.
So I added the start in folder off: C:\Program files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15\
Fine, no problem right? Well by doing so and clicking OK, the OCT tool adds the same string to the Arguements field and if I try delete that and OK it, it comes back when I open it again:
Sure enough, after install when launching the programs with these shortcuts I get error messages starting with:
"Sorry, we couldnt find your file. Is it possible it was moved, renamed or deleted? (C:\Program.doc)"
I guess I could create a script to create my desktop shortcuts, but I rather keep the deployment simple with the built in functionality.
Am I doing something wrong or is this just a bug?

Unbelievable that this is still an issue in SP1.
I was thinking the same thing. The original issue was reported almost 2 years ago.
Microsoft, please stop ignoring the small things and fix the products we all pay a fortune for.

How can I restore my iCloud back-up following reduction of storage amount on 1 Oct 2013?

As a former Mobileme member, my free storage plan was reduced to 5Gb on 1 Oct 2013. Before that, I had around 5.2Gb of iCloud backup size. Today (less than 1 month after 1 Oct) it shows a new back up of just 100Mb. What happened to my earlier back-up (the one rolling over from iOS 6 etc.)? iCloud's notification email says back-up "will temporarily stop working" and that's all.
I have now increased my storage buying 10 extra Gb of iCloud Space and my back-up (which was circa 5.2Gb before reduction) has not restored. What happened to it and how can it be restored?

Does final cut express 4.0 work in new macbook bought in Oct 2013

I bought Final Cut Express 4.0 in 2008 and recently I bought a new MacBook Pro 15" around Oct 2013 and updated to Mavericks 10.9. I copied all the contents and apps from the old macbook to the new one and when using the Final Cut Express, it asked me for the serial number and when I tried to add it, it says serial not valid. What can I do to be able to use my Final Cut Express? Please any suggetions?

Three thoughts,
1. It is usually better to re-install pro apps (like FCE) from scratch instead of migrating them from an older Mac. If you migrated FCE from your old Mac, this could be the reason for the hiccup with the serial number.
2. The serial number is very long, and it's very easy to mistype a character. Try entering it again, being very careful typing and check the serial nubmer visually before you hit the enter key.
3. Keep in mind that FCE was discontinued in June 2011, even before Lion was released. It is no longer supported and there is no guarantee it will run, or run properly, on later versions of OS X including Mavericks. Users have had spotty success with it on Lion, Mt. Lion & Mavericks. YMMV.

Is it possible to upgrade Oct 2013 MBP-r SSD how much before it slows down?

Hi all,
I was just wondering if its possible for Apple to upgrade the SSD in my macbook pro retina oct 2013 model,
I sorely wish that I had gone for the 256GB model really, I purchased applecare, so I don't want to void my warranty - besides, googling around I found out that there are no aftermarket upgrades available for it anyways.
I have set time machine backup to backup manually (is this okay?, I Don't tend to make mistakes of emptying unwanted stuff in the trash, or is it likely ill need to use it for more than this?)
Also, coming from PC's ive always noticed a considerable drop in performance once a drive starts getting alot of data, how much roughly does it take to slow down an SSD, is it the same as a spinny drive? Im still pretty new to OS X, first mac and first SSD and im panicking ive made a serious mistake purchasing such a small drive.

Information for offloading data onto medium-speed and fast external disks:
Standard disks on Thunderbolt connectors are a waste of money (limited by the rotating disk speed at ~100 MB/s). Standard disks on USB 3.0 run just as fast as on Thunderbolt. Yoga 13 - latest synaptic drivers - 22nd Oct 2013 - Anyone tried them

Hi All,
I am trying to resolve the MS office issue which crashes the 2 finger scroll synaptics driver (really annoying me).
The latest drivers on the site are 17.0.8.4 - 22nd Oct 2013 (I have the older driver currently)

When I try and install these I get an extraction error when I run the executable. "the source file is corrupted".
Has anyone managed to install this? Is there a mirror for this driver anywhere?
My best guess is that the file lenovo have on their server is corrupt.

Blank oct 2013 macbook pro, cant install any OSX

i have an oct 2013 macbook pro that was refurbished, it is completely blank and i have an OSX 10.6.1 installation disk but whenever i try to install it, it just goes to a codes screen with a message telling me to restart the computer, any help?

Macbook Pro 2013 wont work with Snow Leopard 10.6
You can install Mavericks by holding down Cmd+R while start up...you´ll need internet connection to do that.

Battery Life on a Refurbished r/MBP (Oct 2013 model)

Last week, I just bought a refurbished MacBook Pro with Retina (Oct 2013 model) and notice the battery only lasts about 6 1/2 hours. This is supposed to be the newest iteration of the MacBook Pro line and I was told that the battery is supposed to last 8 hours or longer. Is 6 1/2 hours about what it should be lasting? Or does this suggest that it was used heavily and that they didn't put a new battery in it? I'm still within the 14 day time window to return/exchange it and I would really appreciate some feedback. I'm thinking of bringing it back to an Apple Store and exchanging it for a brand new one, but ONLY if the new ones really do get battery life of 8 hours or longer. Please tell me what you think.

Thank you for your informative response and your recommendation to download "coconutBattery". In addition to doing what Dominic23 recommended, I will look for Coconut Battery and see what else I can find out about my battery. I really need to make a decision about whether of not to exchange this computer quickly; ideally by tonight. I've got about six days left on my 14 day return/exchange window. However, because the nearest Apple store is more than an hour and a half drive (each way), going there after work one night after work will be a bit much. So if I'm going to do this, I will need to do it this weekend. But I still don't know if what I am seeing in terms of battery use is normal for light usage or symptomatic of a problem that would be best resolved by exchanging it.
I tried looking at Activity Monitor this morning before I left for work, but what I saw there made no sense to me. What does "Time on Battery" mean? Mine says 57:13. Does that mean it has been 57 hours and 13 minutes since I last charged it? Or does it mean that it has been used for 57 hours and 13 minutes? I only have this computer a week and have definitely not used it anywhere remotely near that much. If you (or anyone reading this) know what "Time on Battery" means, I'd appreciate your sharing that information with me.

Adding keyboard shortcuts for duplicate menu names

I wanted to make a shortcut for the "Use Default" menu item under Format/Fonts/Baseline in Pages. To do that i fired up system preferences and added a new shortcut for Pages and typed in "Use Default" as the name. Unfortunately there is a second menu item called "Use Default" under "Ligature", which gets teh shortcut since it comes first in the menu list.
Is there a way to add a shortcut to a specific submenu subitem, so i can force the shortcut to be for the Use Default under Baseline? This applies not only to Pages but to every application which has duplicate menu names in it.

I probably shouldn't reply and get your hopes up... but I noticed that the Shortcut setup didn't allow for specifying menu names (hah! even tho the text box is named "Menu Name" not "Menu Item") and wondered if there were apps that had duplicate menu names.
I'm no help at all, unless sympathy helps...

Project Server 2013 - Adding Enterprise Resouce additonal Assignemt attributes with AD sync programatically

I Have a project server 2013 environment (Sandbox right now but on its way to a production system.) and we have AD sync set up for our enterprise resource pool.
We have 2 situations:
1. AD only brings certain information over (Name, email etc) and leaves other information out: Which calendar to use, base cost rate, Resource departments, Time sheet approver (their manager)
2. IN AD we store the employee number and would like to map it to the External ID field. (And several other things need to happen - outlook out of office sync, resource can be leveled etc)
I have not seen a way "add" this information programmatically. Everything I see says open the resource in Project pro and update. when you have 10,000 resources manual updates and changes are not really practical. Ideally we would
be able to have some logic that looks at a table and as resources are added/updated the various fields are filled in as part of the "ad Sync job"
Question: Is this possible an has anyone done it? If so how?

Yes, you are right. Any extention will have to be custom code. PS operates the same in regards to what can be accessed via AD sync over the various versions. That part has not changed, how MS processes what it reads has changed over the
years.
However, another point for you, be very careful if you are really planning to add 10K users to your ERP via AD. This will be a very taxing endeavor for your systems.
I'm not aware of any technical limits, but you will run into practical limits with more than about 5K users in your ERP. You had better have a very large SQL server and lots of RAM in your SharePoint web and Project App servers. You had better
have more than 1 Project App server, etc... You will want to consider the impact to users when various parts of the system are loaded up with 10K resources. Design your Farm and PWA configuration accordingly or expect to wait a lot!
Don't expect to do this during business hours or you will kill all your users processing. AD sync jobs go in the project server Q and can take hours to process in large numbers like that, at least initially. Don't make any security changes of
any kind during business hours as these will trigger a "re-sync". Etc...

Clearly you will want to use the PSI - which will give you access to almost everything you need. You may need to hook into the Event handlers after the AD sync runs or just run a batch process of your own.
Specifically, Outlook out of office can be accomplished by sync'ing with Exchange Server 2013. See the TechNet on that topic (near the other articles).
Resource can be leveled sounds like your custom job along with the EMP ID mapping.

Sharepoint 2013 adding ECT fails with "Access Denied by Business Connectivity Service"

Using SharePoint Designer 2013 I am attempting to setup an External Content Type to a SQL DB. I have setup the SQL database with a valid login that was also used to setup an account with the Secure Store Service. I am running SharePoint 2013 designer and
have opened my site with administrative credentials. No matter what, I continue to get the "access denied" message when I try to add this SQL database to my ECT section in SPD. All users have access to invoke the BCS app.
I have deleted and recreated the BCS service application and it is running with farm credentials and temporarily I added the farm account to the local admin account....and again verified that all users have rights to run BCS...
In all other aspects my SharePoint sites are working, I can modify and add via SPD and publish...etc...but I cannot add a connection to an external SQL server. I have also verified through Excel that I can connect to my SQL DB with the same credentials that
I am trying in SharePoint and everything works.
Most of the posts I see in this area relate to permissions or access problems AFTER the ECT connection is created. My problem is I can't even get a connection created.

Here are the error logs that are generated when I try to connect....maybe this will help someone tell me where to correct the issue.....(I removed the actual domain names) but my account was listed which is an admin on the sharepoint system and domain.

Macbook Pro Retina Display (Oct 2013)

I have the new MBPr that came out in late october 2013. The battery is obviously not going to last me 9 hours because I'm using it.. but it sure does drain fast. Most I do is internet browsing and listen to music on youtube. Is there something I can reset with the battery to maximize the battery life? Also I'm a new macbook user and I don't know when I should charge my macbook. I've been charging it when the battery is almost dead but I've read on some forums that this is bad for the battery life. PLEASE HELP ME! The battery life is really upsetting..

The 'estimated' 9 hours of battery time is onlt for 'light' Internet browsing - with few Flash movies being viewed - and maybe a couple of low-consumption applications being open, all energy saver settings set just right, etc.
BUT...
You shouldn't let the battery run down to almost no power. If you're able, plug your computer in just as battery % reaches about 30. You can even leave the adapter plugged in whenever you're near a receptacle. If you're plugged in almost 100% of the time, let your battery run down to about 30-40% at least once every two weeks before plugging back into mains.
Be sure and set your Energy Saver prefs to lower the screen brightness and keyboard backlight brightness as low as possible.
You may not get a solid 9 hours on battery, but at least 8 hours can be reasonably expected.
